International Energy Agency sees much weaker oil demand growth in 2015

International Energy Agency report sees no quick end to oil glut
The demand for oil across the globe is growing at its fastest pace in five years. The steep rise is down to rebounding economic growth and consumers responding to low prices. But the oversupply is so great it's expected to last into 2016.
Those are the main findings in a monthly report from the International Energy Agency. The West's energy watchdog said it saw global oil demand rising by 1.6 bil

Oil price slips as International Energy Agency warns of possible sharp fall
The recovery of oil prices is built on shaky foundations. That's the view of the International Energy Agency which warns, in its monthly oil market report that another sharp fall is possible.
It added that global oil glut was building and US oil production showed no signs of slowing. Brent crude fell below 57 dollars a barrel on Friday following publication of the report.

The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host Antoine Halff, Head of the Oil Industry and Markets Division at the International Energy Agency, to present the IEA's 2015 Medium-Term Oil Market Report (MTOMR). Guy Caruso, Senior Adviser with the CSIS Energy and National Security Program, will moderate.
According to the MTOMR, the recent crash in oil prices will cause the oil market to re-balance in ways that challenge traditional thinking about the responsiveness of supply and demand. The report is an attempt to comprehensively chart how the market response to the lower prices is likely to unfold, including an analysis of impacts on demand, OPEC and non-OPEC supply, refining, crude trade and product supply. On the supply side, its forecast reflects not just lower price assumptions, but also the high price-responsiveness of US light tight oil compared with conventional crude, as well as OPEC’s embrace of market forces in late 2014 in a bid for market share. On the demand front, it shows how the response to lower prices will differ this time around from that of prior episodes of re-balancing.

The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host Dr. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist and incoming Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), to present the IEA's World Energy Outlook 2015 Special Report on Energy and Climate Change. The special report presents a detailed first assessment of the energy sector impact of known and signaled national climate pledges for the climate change meeting in Paris in December 2015 (COP21). Additionally, it proposes a bridging strategy to deliver a near-term peak in global energy-related greenhouse-gas emissions, based on five pragmatic measures that can advance climate goals through the energy sector without blunting economic growth. Lastly, it highlights the urgent need to accelerate the development of emerging technologies that are, ultimately, essential to transforming the global energy system into one that is consistent with the world’s climate goals, and recommends four key pillars on which COP21 can build success from an energy sector perspective.

Two-thirds of all greenhouse gas emissions come from energy use and production. The International Energy Agency is calling for pledges at the Paris climate talks to cut these emissions, “while yet sustaining the growth of the world economy, boosting energy security around the world, and bringing modern energy to the billions who lack it today.” In 2014, for the first time in 40 years, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions stayed steady while the world economy grew by around three percent.
But can we bring renewable energy to scale in the developing world? What are the obstacles preventing its rollout and the key building blocks for expansion? What are the potential benefits to economic development, poverty alleviation, energy security, and health from scaling up renewable energy use? What are the potential unintended consequences we must avoid?
Join us for a day-long exploration of the innovative tools being harnessed by the public and private sectors to scale up renewable energy in the developing world. Speakers will also explore how renewable energy will help countries meet the Global Goals for Sustainable Development and support their climate change commitments.

The International Energy Agency is a Paris-based autonomous intergovernmental organization established in the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in 1974 in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis. The IEA was initially dedicated to responding to physical disruptions in the supply of oil, as well as serving as an information source on statistics about the international oil market and other energy sectors.
The IEA acts as a policy adviser to its member states, but also works with non-member countries, especially China, India, and Russia. The Agency's mandate has broadened to focus on the "3Es" of effectual energy policy: energy security, economic development, and environmental protection. The latter has focused on mitigating climate change. The IEA has a broad role in promoting alternate energy sources, rational energy policies, and multinational energy technology co-operation.

The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) hosted a presentation and discussion on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) 2015 Energy Efficiency Market Report with Philippe Benoit, Head of the Energy Efficiency and Environment Division, IEA.
Energy efficiency has been referred to as a "hidden fuel" that extends energy supplies, increases energy security, lowers carbon emissions and supports sustainable economic growth. The IEA's 2015 Energy Efficiency Market Report provides a basis for understanding energy efficiency market activities, a review of the multiple benefits that these activities generate, and statistical analysis of energy efficiency and its impact on energy demand. The 2015 edition also features special chapters on buildings, utilities, and for the first time, cities.
Following Mr. Benoit's presentation, CGEP Fellow Keith Benes moderated a discussion with Mr. Benoit.

Committee Information
Title: International Atomic Energy Agency, 1957
Organ: General Assembly
Chairs: Yen-Yen Gao and Melissa Naschek
Under-Secretary-General: Michael Mintskovsky
Topic A: Nuclear Proliferation
Topic A Summary:
After witnessing the destruction of the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, virtually every country, including the United States and the Soviet Union, expressed support for international regulation of nuclear power. To that effect, the United States, presented the Baruch plan to the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission, but because it would have allowed the U.S. to maintain its nuclear monopoly, the USSR rejected it and international oversight was not established. This failure to agree only signaled the beginning of the arms race. Both superpowers not only continued to accumulate huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons unchecked, but they also further advanced nuclear weapons technology as they continued to compete with each other to try and gain the upper hand. By 1954, both the US and the USSR had conducted their first successful tests of the H-bomb, a more advanced and destructive version of the original nuclear bomb. Currently, tensions remain high between the US and the USSR as each condemns the actions of the other but continues to develop a powerful nuclear arsenal in an attempt to win the arms race. Fearing the ultimate outcome of this continuing escalation, President Eisenhower went to the General Assembly of the United Nations and asked for the established of the IAEA, which was unanimously approved. The primary goal of this organization is to ensure the proper use of nuclear power and prevent it from becoming a weapon used for global destruction.
Topic B: Inspection of Nuclear Facilities
Topic B Summary:
One of the primary goals of the newly formed International Atomic Energy Agency is to ensure that nuclear materials and resources are diverted towards peaceful rather than militaristic ends. The potential of nuclear energy was discovered in 1951, when the first experiment succeeded in harnessing the energy from a nuclear fission reaction. Since then countries around the world, especially the United States and Soviet Union, have devoted an extensive amount of resources, funding, and scientific personnel to the development of nuclear power plants. Nuclear power is not only far more efficient than traditional methods of power supply (for example coal, electric, etc.), but it is also far more environmentally friendly. The one major drawback is that nuclear power plants must be constantly monitored and operated at the highest safety standards, as a meltdown of one of these plants has the potential to be catastrophic. The goal of the IAEA is thus to ensure that the standards that govern the operation of these nuclear facilities are sufficient to keep the plants running safely and then to ensure that each plant continues to operate by them.

There is an impending need for renewable sources of energy in order to maintain the sustainability of the environment. One such advancement is the emergence of biorefinery application industry. According to International Energy Agency (IEA), Biorefining is the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable products and energy. The product segment includes chemicals, materials, food and feed, while the energy segment includes biofuels, electricity and heat. The society is facing energy crisis due to the rising demands and prices of the fossil resources. Moreover, there is an unmet market need for alternative materials and chemicals, to protect the environment from hazardous effects of pollution and emission of greenhouse gases. The anticipated depletion of fossil resources in near future, would witness a global shift from fossil based economies to bio-based sustainable economies. The key factors for the global biorefinery applications market are; growing world population, urbanisation, industrial revolution, and increased modes of transportation. Furthermore, public and private initiatives and environmental regulations across the globe would further drive the market. However, the high cost associated with the establishment of bio refineries, lack of awareness about biorefinery applications and reluctance to adopt newer technologies, are likely to restrain the market growth.
Report Details: http://www.bigmarketresearch.com/biorefinery-applications-market
The global biorefinery applications market is segmented on the basis of raw material, technology, end product and geography. On the basis of raw material, the market is segmented into, Agricultural Biomass such as; Oil Crops, Starch Crops, Sugar Crops, Grasses, Wood and Woody Biomass, Marine Biomass such as Algae, and Residuals & waste materials. The market, on the basis of technology, is segmented into Thermo chemicals such as Combustion, Gasification, Pyrolysis, Thermolysis, and Hydrothermal processes, Biotechnologicals such as Fermentation and Enzymatic conversion, Chemical and Mechanical. On the basis of end product, the market is segmented into Energy products such as Biofuels Electricity and Others, and Material products such as Chemicals, Fertilizer, Polymers, Foodstuff and Others. Geographically, the market is segmented across four regions namely North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and LAMEA.

STORYLINE:
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) sent a fact-finding mission to Japan on Sunday.
A team of around 20 international and IAEA experts from a dozen countries will spend about a week in the country - primarily to carry out fact-finding activities at Tokyo Electric Power Company's stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.
The mission will make a preliminary assessment of safety issues at the plant, which was badly damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami in March.
According to an IAEA news release, the team will also identify "areas that need further exploration or assessment based on the IAEA safety standards".
James Lyons, the director of the IAEA's division of nuclear installation safety, said from Vienna airport on Sunday he was "looking forward to learning a lot" and that the team would "see as much as we can."
Mike Weightman, the United Kingdom's Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations, who's leading the mission, will present their findings at the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety organised by the IAEA in Vienna in late June.

1. Sergei Kiriyenko, head of Russian Atomic Energy Organisation walking to address reporters
2. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Sergei Kiriyenko, Head of the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency:
"Tomorrow I'm planning to be with Mr Agazadeh (the Head of Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran) on the construction of the Bushehr nuclear station. We agreed that today, our experts are working at full speed to prepare for our trip, to work out all the technical aspects of the opening of the Bushehr nuclear station. I see no political obstacles for the finishing of the construction of the Bushehr nuclear station. And we're interested in the station opening at the earliest possible date, once it's been given the technical all clear. Our group consists of a variety of experts who'll be working very closely with their Iranian counterparts all day to prepare the agenda for tomorrow's political negotiations".
3. Reporter's question

10. SOUNDBITE: (Farsi) Muhammad Saeedi, International deputy of Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation:
"Negotiations on enrichment are still underway"
11. Wide of Russian delegation leaving Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation
STORYLINE:
Iran's negotiations with Russia on a plan to enrich Iranian uranium on Russian soil appeared to be making no progress on Saturday, when both sides issued statements saying little more than the topic had been discussed.
After their meeting in Tehran on Saturday, Sergei Kiriyenko, Head of the Russian Atomic Energy Organisation could only say that: "we are discussing the full spectrum of our relationship and we have a sufficient number of experts to follow up and move in all those directions".
His counterpart, Iran Vice president Gholamreza Aghazadeh, who is also the head of Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, also said the plan had been discussed.
But he said the main topic of discussion had been the status of Iran's first nuclear plant at Bushehr, a facility built with Russian assistance that is due to come on stream later this year.
After the talks, Muhammad Saeedi, the International deputy of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, said: "We conferred on the development of our relationship with Russia and on the construction of the Bushehr nuclear plant."
However, he refused to be drawn on the most controversial element. "Negotiations on enrichment are still underway", he said.
Talks in Moscow earlier this week produced no Iranian approval of the plan, which is backed by the United States and European Union and aims to ease concerns that Iran could use enrichment to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran denies any ambition to produce nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is confined to generating electricity.
However, the International Atomic Energy Agency, a UN body, says it cannot give Iran a clean bill of health and accuses it of concealing aspects of its nuclear development and failing to answer questions.

The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host Philippe Benoit, Head of the Energy Efficiency and Environment Division at the IEA, to discuss the IEA's recently released inaugural Energy Efficiency Market Report 2014. The report finds that the global energy efficiency market is worth at least $310 billion a year and is expected to grow. The annual report from the International Energy Agency, now in its second year, confirms the position of energy efficiency as the “first fuel” in the IEA’s largest economies.
Mr. Benoit will also present a related IEA study, Capturing the Multiple Benefits of Energy Efficiency, which shows that the benefits of energy efficiency go well beyond the simple scaling back of energy demand. The study reframes the discussion about energy efficiency and shows how it has the potential to support economic growth, enhance social development, advance environmental sustainability, ensure energy-system security and help build wealth. Guy Caruso, Senior Adviser with the CSIS Energy and National Security Program, will moderate.
