Tokyo Electric Power Company says it will support Fukushima Prefecture's plan to promote renewable energy as a pillar of reconstruction from the 2011 disaster and nuclear accident.
TEPCO President Naomi Hirose met economy minister Yoichi Miyazawa on Friday. Hirose said his utility will make efforts to fulfill its responsibility as the company that caused the accident.
Hirose said the utility will renovate a seldom-used transformer substation near the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant so it can buy electricity generated from renewable energy sources in the prefecture.
The president of Tohoku Electric Power Company, Makoto Kaiwa, was also at the meeting.
Kaiwa said his company will preferentially buy electricity generated in former evacuation zones in the prefecture.
The utility's service area covers mainly northeastern Japan, including Fukushima and two other prefectures worst-hit by the disaster.
Economy minister Miyazawa said the government will allocate funds to buy battery cells and transmission lines in the draft extra budget for this fiscal year to help introduce green energy sources.

[Provisional Translation]
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Fukushima Prefecture.
First, the Prime Minister observed the Ogawara Reconstruction Hub area in Okuma Town in Futaba County. Following this, he exchanged views with residents who have returned to their homes, at the Cycling Terminal in Tenjin-misaki Sports Park in Naraha Town.
In the afternoon, the Prime Minister attended an opening ceremony and unveiling ceremony for the Naraha Remote Technology Development Center. Afterwards, Prime Minister Abe observed a robot demonstration. Following this, the Prime Minister visited the Kokonara Shopping Area, where he and the Joint Public and Private Sector Team exchanged views with business operators.
After his visit, the Prime Minister said,
“I will work to ensure that as many of the people who wish to return to their hometowns as possible are able to do so, at the earliest possible date.
The lifting of evacuation orders is not the end of reconstruction; it is the beginning. We will continue to address this issue while being sympathetic to the concerns that people have.
We are thoroughly monitoring the water. At the same time, we understand that we must address everyone’s concerns.
Furthermore, employment is extremely important. As the Joint Public and Private Sector Team conducts individual visits, we hope to carefully listen to your views and learn about what we can do to address your concerns, so that we can take action accordingly.
I also wish to state once again that I think that the driving force for reconstruction is the feelings of all of the residents of this region toward their hometowns. We must exert every effort so that your hopes can be fulfilled.
Today I was shown a model of the reconstruction hub for the Ogawara area in Okuma Town, an area that I also visited last year. It was clear to me that the project plan is steadily taking shape. There is no doubt that our reconstruction efforts are making progress, step by step, and that we are beginning to see a path toward the future.
Based on the basic policy of the Abe Cabinet that ‘there can be no revitalization of Tohoku without the reconstruction of Fukushima, and there can be no revitalization of Japan without the reconstruction of Tohoku,’ I intend to push forward with reconstruction, while remaining sympathetic to the feelings of the residents of this region.”
Additionally, Prime Minister Abe also said the following about the potential holding of a summit meeting between Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).
“There are plans for a Japan-China-ROK summit meeting to be held soon and we are currently coordinating the schedule for that. At that time I very much hope to hold a Japan-ROK summit meeting.
Difficult issues exist between our countries precisely because Japan and the ROK are neighbors, and it is especially because such issues do exist that I think the leaders of our respective countries must meet and hold frank discussions.
If a summit meeting is held, I would like to discuss a wide-variety of issues, including not only politics and diplomacy, but also the economy, personal exchanges, and culture.”

STORYLINE:
A group of Japanese students have been given a welcome break from their earthquake and tsunami ravaged homes in the Fukushima prefecture, thanks to an Austrian community group.
23 students, many of whom live in the immediate vicinity of the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, are currently on a three week tour of Austria, as part of a Rotary Club project that aims to heal the hearts and souls of earthquake victims.
"I think that you can achieve a better long term effect if if you bring a few out of the area, offer them a time of recreation and distraction, so they can return with a beautiful experience in their hearts and perform better at their tasks and have new ideas," said Rotary spokesman Christoph Feichtenschlager
It''s certainly not uncommon to see a Japanese tour group on the streets of Vienna but these children have more than earned their chance to soak up the city''s sights.
Most come from the Soma city where the tsunami killed 459 people, among them 19 children.
"It was really bad for me. I lost many friends from school. I''m just trying to make the best of it," said student Shiori Itoi.
Others have been affected by the widespread and still-unfolding impact of the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant.
"After the earthquake there was the problem with the nuclear power plant. A 20 kilometre (12 miles) death zone was established. I live exactly 21 kilometres (13 miles) from the power plant, exactly at the border," said student Hiroyoshi Ara.
The students were met on Wednesday by their country''s ambassador to Austria, Shigeo Iwatani, who was part of a special welcoming ceremony.
The students will remain in Vienna for the next few days before being split into two groups.
One group will travel to western Austria, the other one will explore the east of the country.

TOURISTS FLOCKING TO JAPAN - Record Number of Tourists Visiting Japan Due to Weak Yen Currency
The number of foreign visitors surged 29.4 percent in 2014 from the previous year to an estimated 13.41 million, a record high for the second straight year, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Tuesday.
Factors behind the increase included the cheaper yen and easier visa conditions for citizens of some Southeast Asian nations. Shoppers also benefited from an expanded list of items that could be purchased duty-free.
According to a report by the Japan Tourism Agency on Tuesday, the amount of money spent by foreign visitors in 2014, including for shopping and accommodations, soared 43.3 percent to a record ¥2.03 trillion.
The number of visitors topped the 10-million threshold for the first time in 2013, when 10,363,904 people visited Japan.
Tourism minister Akihito Ota said the number of visitors in 2015 is expected to top 15 million, partly on the back of the weaker yen.
Ota stressed that the government will beef up measures to increase the number even further, such as improving Internet access around the country, in a bid to attain its goal of attracting 20 million visitors in 2020, the year of the Tokyo Summer Olympics. japan tourist tourism "japanese yen" yen currency forex "currency exchange" jpop foreign tourists tokyo culture japanese "forex trading" holiday vacation economy takarada "duty free" shopping china chinese travel season "high season" "tojyo hotel" tour "tour guide" quality "made in japan" cosmetics spending savings study canmake brand 2015 2020 olympics tax "elite nwo agenda" money cash trendy anime cosplay alex jones infowars davos 2015 bilderberg 2015 george soros jim rogers singapore
A weaker yen made shopping in Japan more affordable for overseas visitors, though for more records to be broken, several issues still need to be addressed. The government has set a goal of increasing the number of foreign tourists to 20 million by the time the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are held in 2020.
Products in the store would be not only except from consumption taxes, but also import duties and alcohol and tobacco taxes. The Kyushu District Transport Bureau is promoting “wedding photo tours” in the region, which are popular among newlyweds from Hong Kong. East Japan Railway Co. President Tetsuro Tomita wants to encourage tourists from overseas to visit the Tohoku region.
Fukushima radiation risks in Japan are still alarmingly high almost four years after the disaster. In fact, the situation has only gotten worse as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency RadNet has detected heightened radiation levels at monitoring sites all across North America. It has now been announced that radioactive water that’s collected at the plant has to be decontaminated and dumped into the ocean. We take a look at the radioactive groundwater and the safety threat it poses, in this Lip News clip with Gabriel Mizrahi.
Japan’s new defense white paper has done little to mend fences with Beijing, with the Chinese government complaining that its Asian neighbor is using the “China threat” to justify a bigger defense budget. When about a month ago it was revealed that Japan’s shadow economic advisor is none other than Paul Krugman, we said it was only a matter of time before the Japanese economy implodes.

The name Angkor Wat is synonymous with travel, adventure, and Cambodia. However, a common misconception is that it's just one site. In reality, Angkor Wat serves the most iconic part of a larger, 400 square kilometer (154.4 sqmi) archeological park. The hallowed grounds are considered one of the most important in Southeast Asia and chronicle the Hindu and Buddhist beliefs of the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries.
In this first installment of Out and About, I take you on a four-day journey through Angkor Wat Archeological Park. The episode begins at sundown on our arrival day and trip to the park to obtain admission tickets and a breathtaking sunset inside one of the temples. We then return to Angkor Wat the following morning to explore the famous UNSECO site World Heritage site and Little Circuit. Day two focuses on completing the previous day's task as well as seeing other temples on the Big Circuit, culminating with a return visit to Angkor Wat as the sun fades into oblivion.
Our final day inside the park began well before sunrise. Staking out ground beside one of two reflecting pools in front of Angkor Wat, we waited patiently for the sun to rise. Getting there early was key, as hundreds of people try to out do one another for that perfect shot. From there, we traveled to the extreme reaches of the park for some of the lessor known sights, that were in many ways just as beautiful, if not more so than Angkor Wat.

B Adventures, Travel Series: Philippines 2013, Season 1, Episode 4 of 26. Video re-released 2015 from music issues. Guide, tips, and advice. More info and links below. Corregidor Island is located at the entrance of Manila Bay. During World War II, Corregidor played an important role during the invasion and liberation of the Philippines from Japanese forces. Heavily bombarded during the war, the ruins on the island serve as a military memorial to American, Filipino and Japanese soldiers who served or lost their lives on the island. Corregidor is one of the important historic and tourist sites in the country.
There is a special war veterans tour to cater for special needs and the staff are interested in learning historical accounts from any veterans who served there. There is also a separate tour in Japanese for those that want or need a translator / interpreter.
This Corregidor Island tour was with Sun Cruises, best to book at least 1 day ahead.

Corregidor Island, Part 1:
Filipino Heroes Memorial.
Japanese Garden of Peace, Japanese memorial and grave site.
Malinta Tunnel and history show.
The Grand Hotel, for buffet lunch.
Various old barracks ruins.
Travel Tips:
Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly.
Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price.
"Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip.
The average basic worker earns PHP 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine.

True Paradise- Gulf Islands, British Columbia, Canada
British Columbia’s beautiful Gulf Islands are one of Canada and the world’s biggest tourist destinations. With excellent sports and recreation including boating, hiking, cycling and diving, this year round paradise offers the outdoor adventurer numerous options. Good restaurants and a vast array of arts and crafts add to the mix. Year round festivals and farmer’s markets are found throughout the region.
Made up of over a dozen large islands, the Southern Gulf Islands are interspersed with a multitude of islets too numerous to count. Every island has its’ own unique flavour with Salt Spring Island, the most heavily populated having a rural landscape with a bustling arts and local food community while others like Saturna Island and Thetis Island being less densely populated retreats away from the bustle of civilization. This special west coast Gulf Islands paradise of Canada is a small taste of the Mediterranean, blended with a uniquely Canadian flavour.
The BC Gulf Islands enjoy less than 30 inches of rain per year, highlighted by long dry summers and mild winters. Lying southwest of the Strait of Georgia and north of the US San Juan Islands and along the coast of Vancouver Island between Campbell River to the north and Victoria to the south, this necklace of islands is surrounded by sheltered waters, strong tides, and dramatic coastlines.
The Gulf Islands Guide brings alive the diversity and culture of British Columbia’s beautiful Gulf Island paradise.

After a day out in Lake Towada yesterday, I headed to Urabandai in Fukushima Prefecture for another day of autumn colors. Due to the large change in elevation around the mountain, autumn colors around Urabandai tend to be good for about a month as they make their way down the slopes.
The weather forecast for today was for rain and generally cooler temperatures and I was worried about how it would affect the views. However, my worries were unfounded as the views from about 800 to 1300 meters were at their peak: beautiful and filled with yellow, orangey-red leaves. From Fukushima Station, I picked up a rental car and drove on the very scenic Bandai-Azuma Skyline towards my first stop, Jododaira. Near the lower levels, the trees were still green, but once we climbed higher towards 600 meters, the colors exploded into view and remained that way until about 1300 meters where the autumn color season was over.
At around 1600 meters, the autumn color season was over at Jododaira. The volcanic terrain reminded me of Mars and had me imagining the Mars scene from Total Recall. I joined the other tourists and climbed to the top of Azuma-Kofuji at 1707 meters to look down the crater; the path is wide enough to walk around the crater, however there are no ropes or fences that prevent people from falling over.
The Bandai-Azuma Lake Line was lined with trees at their peak of the season, looking like they were on fire with orangey-red and yellow leaves. I had to tell myself to concentrate on driving as the scenery and view at each turn was fantastic and all I could think of were "That's a great view!" and "I want to stop and take some pictures here".
The autumn colors at Nakatsugawa Gorge were at their peak and will remain so for a while more. There were many tourists there by the time I arrived and I joined some of them walking down to the gorge. The path was a little slippery walking down to the gorge as it had been drizzling and the area by the gorge was slick from the drizzle, sprays from the river and wet leaves. All this did not stop the tripod-wielding photographers from getting their pictures and the seasoned photographers even had their rain boots on. Best views of the autumn colors, however are from the bridge over the gorge as you can see the wall of red, yellow trees with the gorge at the bottom.
Finally, I drove to Goshikinuma and went on a short walk along the lakes. There were more tourists here compared to Nakatsugawa Gorge and Jododaira. I walked along the largest lake which had beautiful blue waters and incredibly large koi fishes. The autumn colors here were not as impressive with more green than yellow and red leaves.
On my way back, I took the Bandaisan Gold Line to complete my tour of the skylines in the Bandai area. The Gold Line is a toll road that normally costs 730 yen, but is currently free to promote tourism. Due to its elevation (between 800 to 1200 meters) the autumn colors here were also at their peak and made the return journey very enjoyable. I also managed to get to see a sea of clouds (unkai) over the lake and town below as it had been raining and the cooler temperatures made it possible. However, it also meant that the final part of my drive was not as enjoyable as I had to drive through a thick fog back to the station.
