Intifada (انتفاضةintifāḍah) is an Arabic word which literally means "shaking off", though it is popularly translated into English as "uprising" or "resistance" or "rebellion". Intifāḍat ("uprising of"), not to be confused with the Arabic plural intifāḍāt (انتفاضات). It is often used as a term for popular resistance to oppression. Intifada may also refer to these historical events:

Interestingly, the film, "The Wanted 18," shows how Israel has historically tried to undermine any form of Palestinian nonviolent resistance by branding such resistance as dangerous and threatening, and recreates an astonishing true story from the First Palestinian Intifada when the Israeli army pursued 18 cows, whose independent milk production on a Palestinian collective farm was declared "a threat to the national security of the state of Israel." We speak to Amer Shomali in Ramallah.

Abbas warns of intifada risk after Jerusalem clashes
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas warned Tuesday of the risk of a new intifada after clashes last week at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and with tensions rising as Jews and Muslims celebrate major religious holidays.

As Palestinians take over parts of the West Bank and Gaza, questions have been raised about the issue of compensation for victims of the Palestinian uprising or Intifada.
Several hundred Palestinians are seeking compensation from Israel for damages or losses caused by Israeli soldiers during the six-year Intifada.
But the legal question of compensation is complex - officials argue Israel doesn't have to pay compensation as it didn't start the uprising.
The Intifada lasted six years and turned into an ugly conflict in which many people were killed or injured.
14-hundred Palestinians were killed and thousands were

Abbas warns of intifada risk after Jerusalem clashes
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas warned Tuesday of the risk of a new intifada after clashes last week at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and with tensions rising as Jews and Muslims celebrate major religious holidays.
Abbas's comments after meeting French President Francois Hollande in Paris came with peace efforts at a standstill for more than a year and a recent poll showing a majority of Palestinians support a return to an armed uprising.
"What is happening is very dangerous," Abbas said, while warning against "an intifada (uprising) which we don't want".
The Palestinian leader, whose recent moves have stirred speculation over whether he intends to step down soon, plans to travel to Russia after Paris as he seeks to rally support before his upcoming speech at the UN General Assembly.
Jerusalem was calm on Tuesday but under tight security, with thousands of police officers deployed and authorities closing off the city to residents of the occupied West Bank.
Unrest however hit the flashpoint Hebron area in the southern West Bank, with Israeli forces shooting a Palestinian woman who allegedly tried to stab a soldier. The 18-year-old later died from her wounds, her father said.
Overnight in the village of Dura near Hebron, another Palestinian was killed by an explosive device he intended to toss at a military vehicle, an Israeli military spokeswoman said. Residents provided a similar account.
Palestinian security officials however said he was shot dead by Israeli troops and named him as Dia al-Talahmeh, 21.
- Tight security in Jerusalem -
Hundreds later gathered for his funeral in the village while declaring him a "martyr," with his body wrapped in a flag for militant group Islamic Jihad.
"I am very proud of my son. I hope out of every Palestinian house, a martyr will emerge," said his mother, who declined to provide her name.
The army spokeswoman said a patrol had been deployed to clear stones blocking a road outside Hebron when the incident occurred.
"The soldiers heard an explosion and during a search of the sector they found the body of a Palestinian killed by the explosive device he intended to throw at one of our vehicles," she said.
Tensions have been running high ahead of the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday which begins at sundown on Tuesday.
The Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday begins on Wednesday evening and continues until Sunday.
Israel has deployed thousands of police in Jerusalem and shut it off from the West Bank, with checkpoints closed for the holiday as in previous years.
There were also age restrictions on Muslims entering the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem's Old City, with men under 40 prohibited. Israeli authorities implement such age restrictions when tensions are high in a bid to avoid violence.
Last week's clashes occurred as Jews celebrated their New Year, or Rosh Hashanah.
Police said they raided the Al-Aqsa compound to stop youths who had barricaded themselves inside the mosque from disrupting visits by Jews and tourists.
Clashes broke out during the raids, with protesters throwing fireworks, stones and other objects at police, who fired stun grenades.
- Support rises for new intifada -
Al-Aqsa, the third holiest site in Islam, is also venerated by Jews as the Temple Mount and is considered the most sacred place in Judaism.
Muslims have been alarmed by an increase in visits by Jews to the site and fear rules governing the compound will be changed. Jews are allowed to visit but not to pray to avoid provoking tensions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said repeatedly he is committed to the status quo at the site.
Israel seized east Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the international community.
Hollande, after meeting Abbas on Tuesday, called for "peace, calm and the respect of principles" at the Al-Aqsa compound.
A poll out this week showed 57 percent of Palestinians support a return to an armed intifada in the absence of peace negotiations, up from 49 percent three months ago.
Poll organisers said the figure was similar to numbers seen ahead of the second Palestinian intifada in 2000.

STORYLINE
Bits of pizza, blood stains and body parts were part of an exhibition opened by Palestinian University students on Monday to commemorate the year-old uprising against Israel.
This part of the display was designed to depict the aftermath of a suicide bombing in a Jerusalem Pizza restaurant which claimed the life of the bomber and 15 others.
The controversial show at Al-Najah University in Nablus was put on by students who support the militant Islamic movement Hamas, which carried out the Jerusalem attack.
0001 The entrance to the exhibition was made to look like the Sbarro pizza restaurant.
0005 Visitors wipe their feet on American and Israeli flags.
0011 Inside, you can see half eaten pieces of pizza, body parts and blood smears on tables and walls.
0019 And a photo of the Jerusalem restaurant after a suicide bomb attack in August.
0025 The bomber and fifteen Israelis died in the attack.
0028 The Al-Najah University is a hotbed for Palestinian militants and has produced a number of suicide bombers.

0101 In the show, Israeli leaders and US president George Bush are depicted with pigs ears.

Palestinians in the West Bank village of Naalin on Wednesday marched to mark the 22nd anniversary of the first Palestinian Intifada (uprising).
The uprising, against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, lasted from 1987 to 1993.
Protesters marched towards the Israeli-built separation barrier and hurled rocks over the structure at Israeli soldiers guarding it.
The soldiers responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Confrontations over the barrier in Naalin are frequent and have become increasingly violent.
Israel says the barrier is essential to keep out Palestinian militants, while Palestinians say it is a land grab because it juts into Palestinian land in some areas.

ISRAEL: VICTIMS OF THE INTIFADA TO SEEK COMPENSATION
Arabic/Eng/Nat
As Palestinians take over parts of the West Bank and Gaza, questions have been raised about the issue of compensation for victims of the Palestinian uprising or Intifada.
Several hundred Palestinians are seeking compensation from Israel for damages or losses caused by Israeli soldiers during the six-year Intifada.
But the legal question of compensation is complex - officials argue Israel doesn't have to pay compensation as it didn't start the uprising.
The Intifada lasted six years and turned into an ugly conflict in which many people were killed or injured.
14-hundred Palestinians were killed and thousands were injured.
On the Israeli side, 280 people died and hundreds more were wounded.
On both sides, most of the victims were civilians.
For the Palestinian victims of the uprising, self-rule is little compensation for having been left blind, deaf or confined to wheelchairs.
And many of them have been turning to Israeli courts to seek compensation.
Most cases are brought by those who claim they were innocent bystanders.
However, many of the claims are difficult or impossible to prove.
Even so, lawyers for victims say their clients have a right to some sort of compensation.
SOUNDBITE:
"If you are a child and you walk out of your house in Gaza and the army was shooting and you lost an eye, you're going to be an invalid for the rest of your life. Of course you should be compensated."
SUPER CAPTION: Leah Tzemel, Israeli Human Rights Lawyer representing Intifada victims
But Israeli officials disagree, arguing that Israel did not initiate the conflict.
SOUNDBITE:
"The Intifada was not our initiative. The Intifada was forced on us by the Palestinians. It was their initiative and there is no point, on one hand, to do such a thing, and on the other hand, claim compensation."
SUPER CAPTION: Uri Dromi, Israeli spokesperson
Many of the Intifada victims are cared for in this centre in Bethlehem.
In 1989, Ali Fanoun was a 14-year-old boy.
He and his father had just finished praying and were leaving the mosque in the West Bank village of Nahaleen when a bullet slammed into his back.
Fanoun was a victim of a raid by Israeli border police, during which eight Palestinians were killed and dozens of others were injured.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"There were no clashes or anything. They shot us intentionally. I was just a little boy to be shot at. That's why I'm suing them."
SUPER CAPTION: Ali Fanoun, Intifada victim
Israeli courts have been involved in hearing individual cases and compensation has been granted in the past.
However, there is no systematic compensation programme.
But the Palestinian Authority has now taken up the issue on behalf of the victims.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"We are studying this issue carefully and this will be a subject of negotiations between us and the Israeli side".
SUPER CAPTION: Nabil Shaath, Palestinian Authority minister
Ali Fanoun will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair - a victim of the Palestinian uprising against Israeli control over what were the Occupied Territories.
But Israeli-Palestinian relations have changed dramatically - the Palestinian Authority now controls much of the territories.
And Fanoun hopes the changed political situation may result in compensation for him.

Hundreds of children, aged between six to 12 years, marched through the centre of Nablus on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the Al Aqsa Intifada.
The march was also an act of remembrance of all the children killed during the year long Intifada.
The children were separated into groups in the colours of the Palestinian flag - red, white and green - and carried banners with slogans in English and French saying "Under Occupation - we are deprived of our childhood" and "Laissez-nous en paix" (Leave us in Peace).
Some carried a drawing of Mohammed Al Durra, crouching behind his father.
Al Durra was the 12-year-old boy who was shot dead in Gaza during a fire fight at Netzarim Junction and whose death was captured on film and seen around the world.
Marchers bore a small coffin to represent Al Durra and all the other children killed in the year long Intifada.
Some of the children carried a model of the Al Aqsa mosque complex.
The mosque is the third holiest site in Islam, but is also sacred to Jews as the Temple Mount.
Palestinians claim the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to the site last year - while he was still opposition leader - sparked the current outbreak of violence.
However, Israel says the violence was always planned and Sharon's visit was just used by the Palestinians as an excuse.

Fifteen months after the latest Intifada began, some Palestinian politicians are openly questioning Yasser Arafat's leadership and his support for the violence. The criticisms come against a background of suicide bombings and fierce Israeli reprisals. They say what began as a popular uprising against Israeli occupation has been hijacked by armed militants who refuse to negotiate; their actions, in fact, encouraging the brutal response from Israel.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Palestinians on Friday held a vigil to mark the second anniversary of their uprising against Israel and its increasingly tight grip on the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
In Bethlehem hundreds of marchers gathered for a candle-lit parade. The Biblical city is one of only two major towns in the West Bank which is not currently under an Israeli-imposed curfew.
Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantissi addressed the crowd by mobile phone.
The uprising broke out on 28 September 2000 when Israel's then-opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited the most-disputed site in Jerusalem -- what Jews refer to as the Temple Mount and Palestinians as the Haram as-Sharif mosque complex.
Rioting spread through the West Bank and Gaza Strip, gunmen fired at Israeli army positions from the crowds, and dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire.
The incident and the subsequent wave of violence soon became known as the second "intifada" following an uprising from 1987 to 1993 that ended with interim peace accords between Palestinians and Israelis.
In Ramallah on Friday, Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said he believed conditions had deteriorated significantly in the last two years and that Israel had no intention of ending its assault on the Palestinian people.

The First Intifada or First Palestinian Intifada (also known as simply as "the intifada" or "intifadah"[note A]) was a Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories, which lasted from December 1987 until the Madrid Conference in 1991, though some date its conclusion to 1993, with the signing of the Oslo Accords. The uprising began on 9 December, in the Jabalia refugee camp after a series of escalating actions and deaths of Palestinian and Israeli citizens, and tensions reached a boiling point when an IDF truck struck a civilian car, killing four Palestinians. The life of Palestinian political prisoners and detainees inside Israeli jails:
By: PressTV:
Palestinian Ministry of Detainees and Ex-detainees said that Israeli forces have arrested 10,000 Palestinians since the outbreak of second Intifada in September 2000.
On the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the second Intifada, also known as the Al-Aqsa Intifada, the ministry said in a report that Israel is holding 250 children in prisons and detention camps.
The Al-Aqsa Intifada broke out in September 28, 2000, following a visit by former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The ministry said that 90 percent of the children were arrested from their homes during arrest campaigns that the Israeli army usually carries after midnight. The ministry added that the majority of them were forced to sign confessions written in Hebrew.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and prisoner advocacy groups, there are currently thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, many of whom have been rounded up without charge or trial.
On this week's INfocus, we learn about the story of Palestinian prisoners currently held in Israeli jails and those who are learning to cope with life outside the Israeli prisons where they were held for some 20-30 years.

On this week's INfocus, we learn about the story of Palestinian prisoners currently held in Israeli jails and those who are learning to cope with life outside the Israeli prisons where they were held for some 20-30 years.

Rumors that the crash was deliberate quickly spread throughout Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. In response to general strikes, boycotts of Israeli civil administration institutions in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, civil disobedience in the face of army orders, and an economic boycott consisting of refusal to work in Israeli settlements on Israeli products, refusal to pay taxes, refusal to drive Palestinian cars with Israeli licenses, graffiti, barricading, and widespread throwing of stones and Molotov cocktails at the IDF and its infrastructure within the Palestinian territories. Israel, deploying some 80,000 soldiers and initially firing live rounds, killed a large numbers of Palestinians. In the first 13 months, 332 Palestinians and 12 Israelis were killed. Given the high proportion of children, youths and civilians killed, it then adopted a policy of 'might, power, and beatings,' namely "breaking Palestinians' bones" and using live ammunition against civilians. The global diffusion of images of soldiers beating adolescents with clubs then led to the adoption of firing semi-lethal plastic bullets. In the intifada's first year, Israeli security forces killed 311 Palestinians, of which 53 were under the age of 17. Over the first two years, according to Save the Children, an estimated 7% of all Palestinians under 18 years of age suffered injuries from shootings, beatings, or tear gas. Over six years the Israeli Defense Forces killed an estimated 1,162-1,204 Palestinians while Palestinians killed 100 Israeli civilians and 60 IDF personnel and injured more than 1,400 Israeli civilians and 1,700 soldiers. Intra-Palestinian violence was also a prominent feature of the Intifada, with widespread executions of alleged Israeli collaborators, including an estimated 822 Palestinians killed as alleged collaborators (1988-April 1994), although fewer than half had any proven contact with the Israeli authorities.
The ensuing Second Intifada took place from September 2000 to 2005.

Abbas discussed the issue during his meeting with French President Francois Hollande in Paris. He said what is happening in the occupied West Bank is very dangerous and could lead to another Palestinian uprising. The comments came amid simmering tensions in Jerusalem al-Quds over the repeated attacks by Israeli forces and settlers on the al-Aqsa compound. Israeli forces first stormed the holy site last week, injuring dozens of Palestinians. Clashes and protests have taken place across the occupied West Bank since then. Tel Aviv has restricted entry of Palestinian worshippers to the mosque. Palestinians say Israel is trying to change the Islamic identity of the al-Aqsa Mosque.

This six-part documentary begins with the 1947 U.N. decision to partition Palestine and charts the ensuing half-century of enmity, warfare, mediation and negotiations. Includes interviews and news clips of heads of state and other military and intelligence leaders. Other episodes cover Israel's struggle for statehood, including the victories against Arab armies in 1948 and 1967, and the history of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The concluding program looks at the Yom Kippur War in 1973, the Camp David peace accord in 1978, the start of the Palestinian "Intifada" uprising in 1987, the Oslo agreement in 1993, and the current attempts to consolidate a shaky reconciliation.

STORYLINE:

But Israeli officials disagree, arguing that Israel did not initiate the conflict.

"The Intifada was not our initiative. The Intifada was forced on us by the Palestinians. It was their initiative and there is no point, on one hand, to do such a thing, and on the other hand, claim compensation."

The Second Intifada, also known as the Al-Aqsa Intifada (Arabic: انتفاضة الأقصى Intifāḍat al-ʾAqṣā; Hebrew: אינתיפאדת אל-אקצה Intifādat El-Aqtzah), was the second Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation – a period of intensified Israeli-Palestinian violence. It started in September 2000, when Ariel Sharon made a visit to the Temple Mount, seen by Palestinians as highly provocative; and Palestinian demonstrators, throwing stones at police, were dispersed by the Israeli army, using tear gas and rubber bullets.
