During our talk with the "Good Times" patriarch, we covered his dislike for the character portrayals on the 1970's television series, as well as the importance of "Roots" in Black culture.
After an unsuccessful football career, Amos found his "life's calling" as an actor. His claim to fame was the role as James Evans. Sr, the father-figure a lot of people (including Lord Jamar) looked up to while growing up in the hood. On the popular series, John played the father to three kids: Michael, Thelma and JJ Evans. "The writers chose to put the emphasis on JJ in the chicken hat and him saying 'Dy-no-mite' every two or three pages," recalls Amos. John felt that children growing up watching the show would have better benefited from it if the writers would have put as much focus on "militant midget" Michael and Thelma as they did JJ. Unfortunately, John Amos openly didn't agree with the fact that they chose to downplay Michael and Thelma's Supreme Court Justice and surgeon aspirations, respectively, which resulted in him being killed off from the show. "I didn't leave with any animosity or anything," he claims. "My own intent was to try to improve the quality of the show."
Luckily enough, John Amos' role in "Good Times" ended just in time for him to be cast as the adult Kunta Kinte in the Emmy Award-winning miniseries "Roots." The show had such an effect on Black culture even Kendrick Lamar payed homage to it on his album "To Pimp a Butterfly," with his powerful single entitled "King Kunta." "I'm honored that he would flatter me as such," says a gleeful Amos.

Father’s Day is truly a special day for me when I think about my dad. One word comes to mind when I think about him and his role in my life. Inspiration.
As a child, I recall spending moments watching television and seeing my dad enter the living room of his TV family and greet them for dinner. Then when he had days off and when we would be out having lunch off the set, people would come over and say he was their hero as a dad.
I saw that his role was more than a job; that he was actually helping people through his role as a strong father dedicated to mentoring his TV kids. There were life lessons learned in each weekly episode. It was amazing to watch the show become a hit series, changing the face of television sitcoms, particularly in terms of shows that depicted African-American families.
The actor is John Amos. The show is Good Times. My dad is known as James Evans to so many people. As for me, I call him Pops. The world knows him as the no-nonsense dad. I know him as the thoughtful father who is always looking at the practical way of doing things and even listening when you need someone to talk to.

http://www.vladtv.com - Director John Landis wanted to meet actor John Amos one day at Paramount Studios, and upon arrival Landis made it clear to Amos that he was the one he wanted for the role of Cleo McDowell in his comedic movie "Coming to America." "He had pretty much made up his mind that I was the right [one] for the McDonald's character," he recalls. Interestingly enough, John didn't need too much practice for the role, as he had previously worked for the first-ever McDonald's in Canada during his younger days. "Unbeknownst to me I was being prepared for that role even as I went about the business of trying to feed my family," John states in this exclusive clip.
During his sit down with us the "Good Times" star reminisced on Eddie Murphy's prankster ways while on the set of their film, detailing a time when he noticed a guy becoming "increasingly more confrontational" as he asked Amos about his celebrity status. Producer Easy Mo Bee even jumped into the conversation and mentioned that director Lee Daniels needs to cast John on his hit FOX series, "Empire." "Holla at both of us, we'll both do it. We'll do it as twin brothers, okay?" John adds with a laugh.

John Amos
John A. Amos, Jr. (born December 27, 1939) is an American actor who played James Evans, Sr. on the 1970s television series Good Times. His television work includes roles in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the miniseries Roots, for which he received an Emmy nomination, and a recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on The West Wing. He also played the father of Will Smith's character's girlfriend, Lisa Wilkes, in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
He has also appeared on Broadway and in numerous films in a career that spans four decades. He has received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and NAACP Image Award.

Amos, 75, touched on the importance of positive imagery for black men, which is why he passed up on so many roles he believes portray himself and African American men in a bad light. The actor didn't name the films in honor of the actors who actually took on the roles. During his early times in his career, diversity and social issues weren't at the forefront of television, so he was aware that he would be unemployed for quite some time because of his beliefs.
Amos explains his departure from "Good Times" would be the biggest reason why he's not interested in conforming into a caricature for fame and money. He also admits he would take on the father role for his cast-mates and often threatened or what he calls "promised" the writers to come up with substantial material.
The actor also touches on his play, "Haley's Comet," plans for a children's book and working with Colin Powell.

Father’s Day is truly a special day for me when I think about my dad. One word comes to mind when I think about him and his role in my life. Inspiration.
As a child, I recall spending moments watching television and seeing my dad enter the living room of his TV family and greet them for dinner. Then when he had days off and when we would be out having lunch off the set, people would come over and say he was their hero as a dad.
I saw that his role was more than a job; that he was actually helping people through his role as a strong father dedicated to mentoring his TV kids. A tough, often hot-headed guy with a somewhat tender side, John would succeed far better on stage than on film and TV...with one extremely noteworthy exceptions.
Born on December 27, 1939, John was first employed as an advertising copywriter, a social worker at New York's Vera Institute of Justice, and an American and Canadian semi-professional football player before receiving his calling as an actor. A stand-up comic on the Greenwich Village circuit, the work eventually took him West and, ultimately, led to his hiring as a staff writer on Leslie Uggams' musical variety show in 1969. Making his legit stage debut in a 1971 L.A. production of the comedy "Norman, Is That You?", John went on to earn a Los Angeles Drama Critics nomination for "Best Actor". As such, he formed his own theater company and produced "Norman, Is That You?" on tour.
In recent years, John has enjoyed recurring parts on "The West Wing" and "The District", and is more recently appearing in the offbeat series Men in Trees (2006) starring Anne Heche. John Amos has two children by his former wife Noel Amos and two children. Son K.C. Amos director, writer, producer, editor and daughter Shannon Amos a director, writer and producer. Amos has one grand child,a grand-daughter, Quiera Williams.

Early life and sports career
Amos was born John A. Amos, Jr. in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Annabelle P. and John A. Amos, Sr., who was an auto mechanic.[1] He graduated from East Orange (NJ) High School in 1958. He enrolled at Long Beach City College and graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in sociology.[2] Amos also played on the Colorado State Rams football team.[3] Amos was a Golden Gloves boxing champion.[2] In 1964, he signed a free agent contract with the American Football League's Denver Broncos. Unable to run the 40 yard dash because of a pulled hamstring, he was released on the second day of training camp. He then played with Joliet Explorers of the United Football League. In 1965, he played with the Norfolk Neptunes and Wheeling Ironmen of the Continental Football League. In 1966, he played with the Jersey City Jets and Waterbury Orbits of the Atlantic Coast Football League. In 1967, he had signed a free agent contract with the American Football League's Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Hank Stram told John "you're not a football player, you're a man who is trying to play football." John approached Coach Stram with a poem he wrote about the mythical creature that passed the door of all players who are cut from the team. He read it to the team and received a standing ovation from all the players and coaches. Amos said Coach Stram pushed him in the direction of writing after he was released from training camp. He returned to the Continental League where he played that year with the Victoria Steelers.
