While there are a number of religious communities operating in Poland, the majority of its population adheres to Christianity. Within this, the largest grouping is the Roman Catholic Church - with 87.5% of Poles in 2011 identifying as Roman Catholic,). Nevertheless, only 65% of Polish believers attend church services on a regular basis.
Catholicism continues to play an important role in the lives of many Poles and the Roman Catholic Church in Poland enjoys social prestige and political influence, despite repression experienced under Communist rule. It is particularly regarded by its members as a repository of Polish heritage and culture. Poland lays claim to having the highest proportion of Catholic citizens than any country in Europe except for Malta.

A pasta worshiping religion is en route. The official name of the religion is the 'Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster'.
Apparently it gained a following outside of the U.S., as last year, the spaghetti worshippers, known as 'Pastafarians' appealed to the European Court of Human Rights after their church was rejected as an official faith by Poland's Ministry of Administration.
Well, all the efforts to authenticate the religion proved to be successful. A Warsaw court recently decided that the former court ruling, which denied having the religion apply for registration, be overturned.
Many of the Pastafarians attended the hearing and once the ruling was read, they began shouting 'pasta' outside. It seems as though the court's decision backed up what diehard worshipers already knew.
A statement by the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster notes 'With millions, if not thousands, of devout worshippers, the Church of the FSM is widely considered a legitimate religion, even by its opponents... The Church of FSM is real, totally legit, and backed by hard science. Anything that comes across as humor or satire is purely coincidental.'

The studies on post-socialist transformations in Central and Eastern Europe mostly focus on the shifts occurring in the political, economic and social spheres in the context of ongoing democratisation. The lecture aims to enrich those interpretations by looking at these changes through the "lens of gender". The first part discusses briefly the emancipatory project of the socialist regime and its ambiguous outcomes. The second part describes and offers some explanations of the shifts observed in gender norms and identities in post-1989 Poland.

Most residents of Poland adhere to the Christian faith, with 89.8% belonging to the Roman Catholic Church. Catholicism plays an important role in the lives of many Poles and the Roman Catholic Church in Poland enjoys social prestige and political influence. The Church is widely respected by its members, who see it as a symbol of Polish heritage and culture. The rest of the population consists mainly of Eastern Orthodox (about 806,000 believers, Polish and Belarussians), Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland (about 85,000) and various Protestant (about 250,000, with about 130,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in the largest religious minorities.

A pasta worshiping religion is en route. The official name of the religion is the 'Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster'.
Apparently it gained a following outside of the U.S., as last year, the spaghetti worshippers, known as 'Pastafarians' appealed to the European Court of Human Rights after their church was rejected as an official faith by Poland's Ministry of Administration.
Well, all the efforts to authenticate the religion proved to be successful. A Warsaw court recently decided that the former court ruling, which denied having the religion apply for registration, be overturned.
Many of the Pastafarians attended the hearing and once the ruling was read, they began shouting 'pasta' outside. It seems as though the court's decision backed up what diehard worshipers already knew.
A statement by the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster notes 'With millions, if not thousands, of devout worshippers, the Church of the FSM is widely considered a legitimate religion, even by its opponents... The Church of FSM is real, totally legit, and backed by hard science. Anything that comes across as humor or satire is purely coincidental.'

The second part describes and offers some explanations of the shifts observed in gender norms and identities in post-1989 Poland.
