An inquest into the choking death of an 84-year-old nursing home resident has heard the man was not given CPR - partly because a nurse didn't want to give him mouth-to-mouth without a mask.

Brian Keith Wood was declared dead by paramedics who arrived 15 minutes after being called to the Sarah Hardey Nursing Home in Kelmscott, Perth, on New Year's Day, 2011.

The West Australian Coroner's Court heard on Tuesday that Mr Wood, who suffered dementia, choked on a piece of toast despite having no teeth and being deemed as requiring a soft diet.

Pixie Stott, the registered nurse on duty, told the court that the facility's policy was to call an ambulance for serious medical emergencies and not do CPR.
