Collette Dinnigan stampede at Aldi

The demand for Collette Dinnigan designs pitted mum against mum at Aldi on Wednesday with the launch of the Australian fashion icon's girls' clothing range for the German discount supermarket chain.

They were working in teams and just grabbing everything.

Elbows, hips, handbags and even tag teams were deployed amid the mayhem as shoppers jostled to grab a piece of the Young Hearts collection, which was all but sold out by lunchtime in some Aldi stores.

However, don't despair, for a hefty premium parents can still ensure their little girls are ahead of the fashion pack this summer.

Dinnigan's designs are already for sale on eBay for almost twice the price. The special occasion party dresses, which were the most expensive items in the Young Hearts range with a $29.99 price tag, are for sale on the online site for $55.

Shopper Nicole Swift said her only regret was that she didn't get to her local Aldi store earlier to bag some of the more popular designs, like the swimwear and the towelling poncho.

It's understood some bargain hunters queued outside Aldi stores before opening time to ensure they got first dibs on their favourite designs.

Aldi has been advertising the girls-only range on its website for weeks, giving Dinnigan fans and bargain hunters alike the chance to draw up a wishlist before the big day.

Ms Swift said some of the buyers' tactics were "feral" as shoppers jostled to secure a little piece of Australian fashion history.

"They were working in teams and just grabbing everything in an age range and pulling it out of its bag," Ms Swift said.

"There were only about 20 items left by 1.30pm.

"It looked to me like the women who were in there today weren't the typical Aldi shoppers, but then again I'm not sure who the typical Aldi shopper is."

Dinnigan has scaled back her fashion business in recent years and swapped the Paris fashion shows for a range of creative projects, including collaborations with major retailers, such as her Wild Hearts lingerie line for Target.

It is the first time that Aldi has worked with an Australian designer and market watchers suggest it's a smart way to attract new shoppers, many of whom may never have crossed the store threshold before.

And the lux values of the Dinnigan brand won't do Aldi any harm either, retail analysts say, even if the designs are dumped in bargain bins at the back of Aldi stores and not swinging on expensive hangers in a boutique setting.

Aldi approached Dinnigan about the collection and the German retail giant took care of the manufacturing of the 74-piece range, which included swimwear, dresses, sleepwear and separates in prints and vibrant colours for babies through to children's size 14.

Young Hearts was marketed as one of Aldi's twice weekly special buys.

Dinnigan said it proved you didn't have to pay the earth for good design.

  • I love Colette..and its great her range for children is affordable...but it lowers the tone for all her previous customers who paid a lot of money to purchase her gear...they made an investment and now she says you dont have to pay a lot of money for quality..geez, i think I would be upset.

    • If that's all you're worried about, it's quite trivial in the scheme of things. Snob factor is worth something to some people, but this demonstrates how ephemeral it really is.

    • Yes, I would be upset if I thought that Aldi shoppers could afford to buy my clothing. Imagine wanting to buy affordable clothes for your children; outrageous! I'm sure poor Colette is crying all the way to the bank.

    • Really Gigi, 'lowers the tone' for people who 'made an investment'? An investment in what?...quality?...perception? Brand? Pretence, maybe--that their girls would be a 'tone' apart by buying a dress. Let's be honest, that $30 dress is probably worth $30, and those who previously paid more probably should be upset, but not for reasons you seem to indicate. You see, the one constant in before and after is the quality of the product.

    • Gigi you sound like a dreadful snob. "Lowers the tone"??? seriously? If you are only concerned about quality, and not about snob appeal, why would you care?

    • The clothes in this collection are just gorgeous, but do you know what, they are still all cheap and made in China, despite having the designer label. Hence why the price is so right and the queues are long.

Lowers the tone for previous customers? As if the designers/ manufacturers give two hoots about that! Anyone who bought Colette Dinnigans's clothes as an "investment" in the brand has more money than sense. Now people are upset because the bogans can afford it?? Haha! They are clothes people, clothes!!

    • You are quite right Gigi. My granddaughter looks very cute wearing clothes from Target, K Mart, discount racks outside small shops etc etc, and by the way, she's grown out of them in about six months.
Investment? In what? In the end they all get donated to Vinnies.

    • Wow, i can't believe people interpret the comment as snob factor? I interpret the comment that the commentor was just talking about what they like and dislike. Come on people, have a better day.

As for ALDI, Aldi is the best. I have not shopped at Woolworths or Coles for years now. Aldi food is always fresh, the goods they sell is always interesting. Aldi is a 21st century grocery.
