Sint Eustatius, also known affectionately to the locals as Statia/ˈsteɪʃə/ or Statius, is a Caribbean island and a special municipality (officially public body) of the Netherlands.
It lies in the northern Leeward Islands portion of the West Indies, southeast of the Virgin Islands and immediately to the northwest of Saint Kitts and Nevis and to the southeast of Saba, at 17°30′N 62°58′W / 17.5°N 62.967°W / 17.5; -62.967. The island is named after the legendary Christian martyr Saint Eustace. The regional capital is Oranjestad.
The island has an area of 21 km² (8.1 sq. miles). In the 2001 census, the population was recorded as 3,543 inhabitants, equating to a population density of 169 inhabitants per square kilometre. The official language is Dutch, however English is also recognised as an administrative language. A local English-based creole is also spoken informally. Travel to the island by air is through F.D. Roosevelt Airport.
Formerly part of the Netherlands Antilles, Sint Eustatius became a special municipality within the country of the Netherlands on 10 October 2010.

A Glimpse of St. EustatiusA Glimpse of St. Eustatius
I decided to make a video dedicated to the island of St. Eustatius and all his inhabitants after living on this beautiful piece of unspoiled paradise for two years. My experience is that the diverse culture (20 different nationalities) and history in this special municipality of Holland is incredibly friendly & social. Because of the size of the island (21 km2) all the individuals (3500) living on the "Golden Rock" play an important role in the island economy. I decided to make a video dedicated to the island of St. Eustatius and all his inhabitants after living on this beautiful piece of unspoiled paradise for two years.
My experience is that the diverse culture (20 different nationalities) and history in this special municipality of Holland is incredibly friendly & social.
Because of the size of the island (21 km2) all the individuals (3500) living on the "Golden Rock" play an important role in the island economy.
We all know the beautiful views, houses, monuments and forts on the island of St. Eustatius, but I've tried to capture the things visitors normally don't see..
I have chosen to keep this video as objectively as possible, keeping the focus on things visitors may overlook in their "haste". Things like; The interior of the volcano, young people who go fishing, local people going into the Quill hunting goats and crabs the traditional way, cars overgrown with Coralita, the inside of 200 year old houses that normally you just walk pass, friendly inhabitants always willing to have a friendly conversation etc.
But there are also special places such as "Hobbit land" a piece of Statia that could come directly from the film "The Hobbit". I found that this place was incredibly atmospheric with a touch of creepiness but at the same time it is unbelievably peaceful and there are a lot of movie decors on this island..
So if you want to go back in time and experience a Glimpse yourself, don't miss out on this little island in the Caribbean, because it is truly unique, unspoiled and hardly influenced by Western society.

The official language is Dutch but English is the "language of everyday life" on the island and education is solely in English. A local English-based creole is also spoken informally. Travellers to the island by air arrive through F.D. Roosevelt Airport.

In addition to regular mooring maintenance, patrols and research, the National Marine Park works closely with local dive centres to ensure that diving practices minimise impact on the reef.

This promotional clip for STENAPA (St Eustatius National Parks Foundation) shows the underwater world in the marine park of Statia/Caribbean Netherlands.
The St Eustatius National Marine Park was created in 1996 and extends around the entire island from the high water line to 30m depth contour. The park covers an area of 27.5km2 and protects a variety of habitats, including pristine coral reefs (drop off walls, volcanic ‘fingers’ and ‘bombs’, spur and groove systems), 18th century shipwrecks and modern-day artificial reefs to promote fishing and dive tourism (including a 100m cable-laying ship).
Within the Park are two actively-managed Reserves in which no fishing or anchoring is permitted to conserve marine biodiversity, protect fish stocks and promote sustainable tourism. In addition to regular mooring maintenance, patrols and research, the National Marine Park works closely with local dive centres to ensure that diving practices minimise impact on the reef.

Saba is a Caribbean island and the smallest special municipality (officially public body) of the Netherlands.[4] It consists largely of the potentially active volcano Mount Scenery. Saba has a land area of 13 square kilometers (5.0 sq mi). As of January 2013, the population was 1,991 inhabitants, with a population density of 150 inhabitants per square kilometre (390/sq mi).[1] Its towns and major settlements are The Bottom (the capital), Windwardside, Hell's Gate and St. Johns.
AIRPORT: In 1963, Saba residents built the Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport. This 400-metre (1,300 ft) landing strip is reputed to be the shortest commercial runway in the world, and is restricted. Only trained pilots flying small STOL airliners, such as the Twin Otter and the Britten-Norman Islander may land there, as well as helicopters. Consistent air service from Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius is available through Winair.
