A society, or a human society, is a group of people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification and/or dominance patterns in subgroups.
Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap.
A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology.

The starting point of these lectures will be a new book “Ethnic Stratification and Income Inequality around the World. The End of Exploitation and Exclusion?” (Ashgate 2015) by Max Haller. He argues and shows through aggregate data analysis comparing 123 countries and case studies of a dozen countries around the world, that economic inequality is higher in multi-ethnic societies, and particularly in societies which experienced a period of slavery. However, a democratic political system and a welfare state are able to provide for equality also in multi-ethnic societies. India is a particularly interesting case. The starting point of these lectures will be a new book “Ethnic Stratification and Income Inequality around the World. The End of Exploitation and Exclusion?” (Ashgate 2015) by Max Haller. He argues and shows through aggregate data analysis comparing 123 countries and case studies of a dozen countries around the world, that economic inequality is higher in multi-ethnic societies, and particularly in societies which experienced a period of slavery. Calling Home is a project on housing change in Italy and on the ways Italian society shapes its domestic spaces. Australia is one of the most racist countries on this earth and change is needed so the 'Keep Life Colourful' campaign aims to change this by teaching the next generation about this issue that is so prevalent in our society. In most cases we may have to guess their domestic daily life from the few blurred details they choose to let us see: a bookshelf, a fridge, a table, a display case.

According to a summary on the UN website of a meeting in the General Assembly's Third Committee that deals with social, humanitarian and cultural issues, Pakistani delegate Diyar Khan raised the issue of Kashmir by saying that he regretted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had been "deprived of their right to self-determination." Participating in the session on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and right to self-determination at the United Nations Monday (Nov. 3), Khan said the right to self-determination must be exercised in an environment free from coercion or duress, as electoral processes held in situations of foreign occupation or alien domination did not reflect people's true wishes. He said self-determination did not lapse with the passage of time and neither could it be "set aside" by charges of terrorism. Indian delegate Mayank Joshi stressed that Pakistan's "unsolicited comments" pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir were "factually incorrect", according to the meeting's summary. He said free, fair and open elections were regularly held in that territory at all levels. Joshi said India was a multi-religious, multi-ethnic andmulti-lingual society, fully committed to the goal of eliminating all forms of discrimination. Exercising the Right of Reply, the Pakistani representative said that the Indian delegation had "alleged" that Jammu and Kashmir was part of India. He refuted this assertion made by India saying that the UN Security Council had adopted several resolutions declaring Jammu and Kashmir as a "disputed territory". Sparring over Kashmir at the UN General Assembly, India and Pakistan have again exchanged verbal volleys over the issue with the Indian delegate dubbing the remarks of his Pakistani counterpart as "unsolicited comments" that were "factually incorrect". According to a summary on the UN website of a meeting in the General Assembly's Third Committee that deals with social, humanitarian and cultural issues, Pakistani delegate Diyar Khan raised the issue of Kashmir by saying that he regretted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had been "deprived of their right to self-determination." Participating in the session on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and right to self-determination at the United Nations Monday (Nov. 3), Khan said the right to self-determination must be exercised in an environment free from coercion or duress, as electoral processes held in situations of foreign occupation or alien domination did not reflect people's true wishes. He said self-determination did not lapse with the passage of time and neither could it be "set aside" by charges of terrorism. Indian delegate Mayank Joshi stressed that Pakistan's "unsolicited comments" pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir were "factually incorrect", according to the meeting's summary. He said free, fair and open elections were regularly held in that territory at all levels. Joshi said India was a multi-religious, multi-ethnic andmulti-lingual society, fully committed to the goal of eliminating all forms of discrimination. Exercising the Right of Reply, the Pakistani representative said that the Indian delegation had "alleged" that Jammu and Kashmir was part of India. He refuted this assertion made by India saying that the UN Security Council had adopted several resolutions declaring Jammu and Kashmir as a "disputed territory".
