Caught Between the Islamic State and the Kurds: Exiled From Tal Abyad
In June 2015, Kurdish forces — supported by the Free Syrian Army and US-led coalition airstrikes — drove out the Islamic State (IS) from the northern Syrian town of Tal Abyad — a strategically important gain in the battle against the jihadists. For over a year Kurdish forces have united in defence against bloody IS attacks. So how have Islamic State still managed to recruit hundreds of young Kurds to fight for the Caliphate against their own families?
"There are Kurdish families in Halabja whose sons are in IS and their hearts are broken, but I'll never go to their funerals", says the grieving mother of Kaihan Borhan, a Kurd who died fighting with the Peshmarga against IS. Her family is distraught that the people responsible for his death could well be Kurdish nationals. "I have a friend whose brother died fighting for ISIS", says Kaihan's brother. "I never grieved for him and my friend cannot bear to look me in the eye." In this report we see the path to extremism that many Kurds have taken. Dissatisfaction at the Kurdish Intelligence service, Asayish's persecution of Muslims and domestic grievances are being skilfully exploited by IS propaganda, led by Khattab Al-Kurdi and his Saladin Brigade. "With God's permission we will sow the seeds of the Caliphate throughout our land", says the Kurdish Khattab, who has been one of the most persuasive forces in luring Kurds towards the Caliphate. Even with Khattab's reported death in April 2015, the threat of more Kurds joining IS seems unlikely to diminish, with a new Kurdish Imam carrying the rhetoric forward.

Al-Hasakah has been ripped apart by President Assad and IS-terrorist troops. But Kurdish militia now control the area. This report follows the Kurds as they struggle to maintain their fragile grip on the war-torn city.
"Victory or death!" chants a member of Assad's anti-terrorist unit. He's one of the fighters fiercely loyal to Syria's original regime, but who now works hand in hand with the Kurdish militia. A tenuous peace has been reached between the two, enabling a semblance of normal life in the south of the city. But evidence of the recent fighting remains a constant presence. At a roundabout on the city limits a portrait of Syria's president, Hafez al-Assad, still stands, his eyes riddled with bullets. A mother grieves over her son, lost to the conflict. "You should be proud that your son has died", a Kurdish commander tells her. He has become one of the countless martyrs to the cause. "God willing", she responds, "his blood will be avenged".

The northeastern city of Hasakah is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse in Syria. Its population of Kurds, Sunni Arabs, and Christians was until recently politically divided between equal zones of Kurdish and Assad regime control. Immediately following the fall of the strategic border town of Tal Abyad from Islamic State (IS) fighters to Kurdish YPG forces in June, however, IS hit back with a sudden shock offensive on the regime-held half of Hasakah, causing regime forces to crumble in a matter of days.
As the Syrian army and loyalist militias relinquished control to IS, the YPG entered the battle, first encircling IS positions and then launching a ground offensive supported by pounding coalition airstrikes. Despite IS using their elite forces in the offensive, the combination of airstrikes and YPG ground troops proved too much and IS fled its recent gains in the city, leaving behind only ruined buildings and mangled bodies.
With IS pushed back from Hasakah's southern outskirts, VICE News follows the YPG as they become masters of areas of the city that until a few weeks ago had always been held by the Syrian regime. With government forces and the YPG facing off across this disputed territory, the future status of Hasakah is now unclear.

Phil Campion, a former SAS soldier and a veteran of just about every major conflict zone in the world, travels to the front line in Syria and Iraq to meet the men and women taking the fight to Islamic State.
Known as 'Big Phil', he filmed for Sky with both the YPG and Kurdish Peshmerga, observing their war against a well-equipped and motivated enemy.
He experienced some of the worst battles of his life while embedded with the Kurds and met the all-female fighting units of the YPJ, described as a secret weapon of the war.
Are those fighting Islamic State properly equipped for battle? And is this a fight they can win? Find out in our special report.

In June 2015, Kurdish forces — supported by the Free Syrian Army and US-led coalition airstrikes — drove out the Islamic State (IS) from the northern Syrian town of Tal Abyad — a strategically important gain in the battle against the jihadists. Yet the fighting also forced waves of refugees to cross the border into the Turkish town of Akcakale.
The advance on Tal Abyad, containing a diverse population of Arabs, Turkmen, and Kurds, provoked the Turkish government and a coalition of rebel groups to accuse Kurdish forces of “ethnic cleansing” and displacing Arabs and Turkmen — an accusation strongly denied by the Kurdish forces.
Yet allegations of forcible displacement persist among refugees, with some telling VICE News that their hometown is now under another hostile occupation, and others stating that life under IS rule was better.
Many refugees in Akcakale have had to set up camp in parks, or rent overcrowded housing. There is a lack of food and a number of children require immediate medical attention.
VICE News meets the refugees and activists of Tal Abyad, where they describe their new life in Turkey, as well as their fears for the future.

Out of the chaos of Syria's civil war, Kurdish leftists have forged a radical, multi-ethnic mini-state. But with ISIS attacking them at every opportunity, how long can this idealistic social experiment last?
"It's not about religion here. We protect all sects" says a Kurdish soldier. Made up of enclaves across Northern Syria, Rojava is built on the principles of equality, providing sanctuary to a spectrum of minorities as well as refugees on the run from ISIS. Described by Aldar Xalil, member of the Rojava Government Council, as a “consensus based, democratic way of life”, the state enjoys a political liberty unfamiliar to other areas of the Middle East. Here, no religious restrictions are imposed on public behaviour and women are encouraged to engage in running municipalities and combat. But a close association with the PKK, a Turkish militant group with a similar ideology yet brutal past, has earned Rojava inhabitants the scornful label of “terrorists” and a cautionary approach from international players. As YPG spokesmen Redur Khalil explains, however, the national army of Syrian Kurdistan could be key in the fight against ISIS: “for the American and European plans to succeed, they will need allies on the ground”.

In the face of increasing government violence, Kurdish areas throughout Turkey are declaring autonomy. This report explores the origins of the conflict as Kurds take up arms against their government.
"This is the reality of our lives", explains Metin, a university student, as he stands in the derelict roads of Silopi. The town is largely deserted except for the young militants that roam the streets. "Before, everyone lived here happily... now the streets are empty." In June, the governing AK party missed an absolute majority in the Turkish general election. Coalition talks failed and a new vote will be cast in November. Following the election, violence broke out in the country's South-east between Turkish forces and Kurdish militants, and over 300 have died. "We do not want independence, we want to implement our own system within Turkey", explains one Kurd. As clashes with the government continue, Kurdish forces and youth militias are growing in numbers. This report explores the developing conflict that is threatening to destabilize Turkey.

The Kurds are one of the world's largest peoples without a state, making up sizable minorities in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Their history is marked by marginalization and persecution. Yet some Kurds may be on the verge of achieving their century-old quest for independence in a Middle East undergoing the convulsions of Syria's civil war, Iraq's destabilization, and conflict with the self-proclaimed Islamic State.

Kurds are a group related to Europeans in Linguistics and DNA. During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Treaty of Sevres outlined the creation of a Kurdish Nation in present day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. ( Due to Kemal Ataturk's military revival and formation of modern Turkey, Treaty of Lausanne supersedes Sevres and failed to mention Kurdistan. While today's Kurdish parties formed post-WWII, the Kurdish struggle for Independence began long before. Kurdistan Region has historically hosted wars between the Iranian Empires and Roman Empires, and the Ottoman Empire. During Ottoman Empire and Safavid Empire, The Kizilbash (occupying borders between Iran and Turkey) and of probably Kurdish origin, identified with the Safavid Empire and rebelled against the Ottomans.
This video covers the identity and origin of the Kurdish people, and their struggle for independence in Iraq dating back to Mustafa Barzani and the Pahlavi Dynasty. Including during the Iran-Iraq war, and Chemical Weapons attack on Halabja.

Iraq After the Muslim Conquest p.265: '...Kurdish presence in Iraq was merely an extension of their presence in Western Iran'
Iraq After the Muslim Conquest p.265: 'Iranian groups in foothills/mountains of Zagros were called Kurds at that time'
E. J. van Donzel: "Kurds are Iranian people who live mainly at the junction of Turkey, Iran Iraq, Syria & Transcaucasia".
John Limbert: "..The historic road from Baghdad to Hamadan and beyond divides the Kurds from their Iranian cousins, the Lurs"
Case of the Bronze Age by Carl C. Lamberg-Karlovsky:
Iranian people belong to the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) community which is ancestral to the Celtic, Italic (including Romance), Germanic, Baltic, Slavic, Indo-Iranian, Albanian, Armenian, Greek, and Tocharian languages.
There is an agreement that the PIE community split into 2 major groups. One headed west for Europe and became speakers of Indo-European (all the languages of modern Europe save for Basque, Hungarian, and Finnish) while others headed east for Eurasia to become Indo-Iranians.
The Indo-Iranians were a community that spoke a common language prior to their branching off into the Iranian and Indo-Aryan languages.
Iranian refers to various Iranian people such as Persian, Laki, Luri, Baluchi, and Dari speakers.
Indo-Aryan: Sanskrit, Hindi and its many related languages.

In the disputed area on the edges of IS-controlled territory are the last outposts of Kurdish resistance to IS. With incredible access this report meets the hardened fighters and embittered refugees among them.
Since the start of the Syrian war, nearly 13.6 million people have been displaced, crossing bridges and passing through checkpoints at great peril to escape the violence. Mosul is one of the towns to recently fall under IS control. "IS controls everyone's daily routine. Everything you hear about them is true", says a man who fled the town. He has made it to Erbil, recently recaptured by Kurd forces, who are waging a bloody war with Islamic State to protect their land. Gunfights, car bombs and aerial attacks are a daily reality for the soldiers and the displaced who occupy this zone, mere kilometres from the waving flags of the Islamic State.

Kurds are the most effective group standing up to ISIL.
Kurdish fighters are again trying to fend off an attack by ISIL fighters on the border town of Kobane.
And they recently captured Tal Abyad, a strategic border town which ISIL used to bring foreign fighters and supplies to areas they control inside Syria.
The Kurds' fight is driven by their dream of a homeland of their own. They are scattered across the region and the world. Their quest for their own nation is boosted by the continuing wars in Iraq and Syria.

"The president of the Kurdish region of northern Iraq has asked his parliament to prepare for a referendum on independence, potentially paving the way for the break-up of the country.
Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, called on parliament on Thursday to form an independent electoral commission that would start organising a referendum on independence for the semi-autonomous region.
"It will strengthen our position and will be a powerful weapon in our hands," he said."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Newroz TV, 1 hour; analyzing the ways of struggle with Iranian government; self-determination, self-defense of Kurds. I discussed and analyzed the opinions of leader of KDPI, Xalid Azizi in one of his interviews with a website (source) and asking him to answer my critiques. (this program held in Persian language)
In this interview I analyzed right to self-defence of Kurdish people against Iranian government in defending their basic human rights in accordance with international law. Also I analyzed the policy of various political parties regarding Iran. In this program I analyzed the consequences of locating some Kurdish political parties in Kurdistan Regional Government in their policy towards Iranian government. I said because some Kurdish political parties reside in KRG they were weakened and their policy towards Iran softened. Also the KRG severely restrict their activities.
Also, and the important thing is that in this interview, I spoke in support of armed struggle of PJAK against brutality of Iran government and positive consequences of this armed struggle for asserting our rights. Also, in this interview, I analyzed the propaganda by Iranian government against PJAK to discredit this party among Kurdish people. it is important to mention that during my interview the tension and armed conflict between PJAK and Iranian government was in its highest degree.

Christian U.S. Veteran Fighting Alongside Kurds to Defeat ISIS
Meet Jordan Matson, an American veteran and Christian who is fighting with the Kurds to defeat ISIS.
Matson has been fighting ISIS since September. His vest is inscribed with the words, “Christ is Lord.”
Matson spoke to Sean Hannity today from an undisclosed location in Syria. He explained that the tipping point for him was when Mosul fell to ISIS, and Christians were forced to flee or be killed.
“I decided if our government wasn’t going to do anything, I would,” he said of his decision to fight ISIS overseas.
Matson alleged that people are dying because of politics. He said that the Kurdish people stood by the U.S. for 10 years, and that people in the region just want to live in peace.
The U.S. veteran added that pro-America Syrian Kurds are getting absolutely no financial or military support.

Kurdish singer Helly Luv ready to 'Risk it All' for independence
Kurdish pop singer Helly Luv says she will not be put off by death threats from Iraqi Islamist militants since release of her first music video but, drawing on its title, insists she will "Risk It All" to help a push for an independent Kurdistan.
Iraqi-born Luv, 25, has seen her video rack up more than 2.5 million views on YouTube since its release in February; but she has faced criticism for what some see as provocative imagery in the clip accompanying the modern mix of dance, hip-hop and traditional Middle Eastern music.
Luv said the video, which includes exploding petrol bombs, backing dancers with AK-47 rifles, and the singer dancing in a mid-thigh silver dress atop a citadel, represents the Kurdish spirit and struggle for an independent state.
"There were death threats from many Islamic groups... it was a really hard time for me," Luv said in an interview in Arbil, the autonomous Kurdistan region's capital. "(But) my whole message is that, Kurdish people, we need to risk everything for our dreams and fight for our country."
Iraqi Kurdistan's population of roughly 5 million people has enjoyed a degree of independence from Baghdad since the end of the first Gulf War in the early 1990s.
But the Kurds are now closer than ever to leaving Iraq altogether, with Massoud Barzani, leader of their autonomous region, calling on his parliament to ready a referendum on independence after the latest violence in the country.
Critics argue that Kurdish leaders' actions could lead to broader chaos in Iraq and beyond its borders, promoting rebellions in Kurdish areas of neighbouring states.Luv's mother was a Kurdish 'peshmerga' fighter before the family emigrated during the Iran-Iraq War.
"You can see in Kurdistan right now that people don’t want war, we have been through so much already," Luv said. "We have fought so much to get this freedom, so we're not going to let nobody take it away."
Her management team declined to say whether any of the death threats she had received came from the Islamic State, the group previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), saying they did not want to give any of the groups or individuals publicity.
The Islamic State's lightning takeover of the northern city of Mosul and advance towards Baghdad stirred the latest crisis in Iraq, and saw the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government expand its borders and take over oil areas as Iraqi military forces retreated.
Luv recently visited Kurdish peshmerga forces that have been involved in skirmishes with the Islamic State.
Photos on her Facebook page show her wearing an old-style peshmerga uniform, red and black scarf and aviator sunglasses, standing before ranks of black-uniformed Kurdish troops.

ADNAN OKTAR: “Salamun Alaikum Sir” Alaikum Assalam. ”Do you support a religious Kurdish state that will be established in Turkey?” In Turkey we want the Islamic Union. That means the unification of Muslims. Turkey is a typical example of the unification of the Muslims. Laz people, Kurdish people, Circassion people, everyone is united; an Islamic Union has been formed in Turkey. We want to spread this unity all over the world. If you ever try to establish a separate Kurdish state, you would eliminate the Islamic Union. Then they will eliminate you by law. No way. This is illogical but if you establish a Kurdish state in Iraq and Syria under the leadership of Barzani, he is a rational man. We can support you. Borders are also not a problem, it can be wider. Then you federalize by joining to Turkey. You will no longer have trouble such as defending yourself. Iraq or Syria cannot threaten you anymore nor any other country. Our Kurdish brothers will live a life in which there is great trade, great wealth and great blessings. But in Turkey obviously we will not allow such a thing, of course, because we are the only hope for Islamic Union. If you do such a thing, you will break this hope. If you ever try to break this hope, you will harm the people.
AYLİN KOCAMAN: The Kurds in Turkey do not have such a request .
ADNAN OKTAR: Will you establish a communist state, will you recruit everyone into the army, will you establish a Stalinist and Communist proletarian dictatorship? In such cases, there will be no religion, no faith; everything will disappear, terror and violence will dominate the region, our sisters and our mothers will be ruined. We will not allow this, it is not possible.

In a two-week offensive, Syrian Kurdish fighters of the YPG (People's Protection Units) recaptured dozens of villages and towns from Islamic State militants. It's one of the few successful anti-IS operations, as the militant group continues to take ground elsewhere in Syria and in neighboring Iraq. VOA Kurdish Service reporter Zana Omer is on the frontlines in Tal Shamiran, where the YPG are getting help from America, both in the air, and on the ground. Robert Raffaele narrates.

Journalist Khazar Fatemi talks to female fighters in Iraq who are battling the Islamic State under the auspices of the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers' Party. At the time of the interview, the women Fatemi spoke with were fighting to protect Kurdish positions and Yazidi refugees. Thanks to the PKK's leftist ideology, its female fighters have high levels of freedom and autonomy compared to what women experience across the rest of the Middle East, including in nations the U.S. considers strategic partners, like Saudi Arabia. One-third of the fighters who have been defending the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani on behalf of the PYD, a Syrian Kurdish group linked with the PKK, are women. On social media and elsewhere, stories have circulated about Kobani that focus on the role of female Kurds who have gone to extreme lengths, like the fighter who has reportedly killed 100 Islamic State militants and her comrade who blew herself up to set the Islamic State back.
In her report, Fatemi, a Kurd herself, hears from these women about their motivations, their view of the fight against the Islamic State and their hopes for the presently stateless Kurdish people.
