Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005 and crossed southern Florida as a moderate Category 1 hurricane, causing some deaths and flooding there before strengthening rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm weakened before making its second landfall as a Category 3 storm on the morning of Monday, August 29 in southeast Louisiana. It caused severe destruction along the Gulf coast from central Florida to Texas, much of it due to the storm surge. The most significant number of deaths occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed, in many cases hours after the storm had moved inland. Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks. However, the worst property damage occurred in coastal areas, such as all Mississippi beachfront towns, which were flooded over 90% in hours, as boats and casino barges rammed buildings, pushing cars and houses inland, with waters reaching 6–12 miles (10–19 km) from the beach.

Hurricane Katrina DVD Documentary, from Miami to New Orleans and Biloxi.
The only independent video production that documents Hurricane Katrina from both sides of the eye as the storm devastated the United States Gulf Coast.
Filmed in Miami, FL at Katrina's first land fall and in the air with the NOAA Hurricane Hunters, we chart Katrina's path towards the record breaking landfall.
The footage continues in New Orleans, LA prior to Katrina to document the evacuation of the region. As the storm nears the Gulf Coast, it also continues in Biloxi, MS before the record breaking storm surge destroys the coast.
We bring you through the storm and after the storm for an in-depth look at what was really happening 24 hours after Katrina in New Orleans.
This production was filmed and produced by the videographers who were on the ground and in the middle of Katrina the storm and storm surge came on shore on the morning of 08/29/2005.
To license footage from our production, please contact us at http://www.StormChasingVideo.com No part of this production or any of our footage on our YouTube channel can be rebroadcast without prior written authorization.
Update Note: 9/11/2014 I did not pick up the guy in the middle of the storm because what he was looking for was right down the street. I had walking pneumonia and in a shady city with a lot of expensive gear. For those of you complaining about why I did not pick the guy up, I ask why did the Mayor not order the evacuation sooner? The same mayor, Nagin who this week began serving a 10-year prison sentence, following his conviction in February on 20 criminal counts! Why did I give the second guy a ride? Because he did not have far to go and he had a puppy with him and I don't care what race you are, if you are risking your life to save you're pet, that wins points for me. Also after the storm the next day when I knew I was going to Houston that night, I gave away the several empty fuel can's, weeks supply of food and 10 gallons of bottle water that were also in the truck and had room in the vehicle for the man and his dog. Don't call me a racist, I'm the only one that has told the truth to what really happened in NOLA without it being political.

If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise is a 2010 documentary film directed by Spike Lee, as a follow-up to his 2006 HBO documentary film, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. The film looks into the proceeding years since Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans and Gulf Coast region, and also focuses on the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and its effect on the men and women who work along the shores of the gulf. Many of the participants in Levees were also featured in this documentary.
It won a Peabody Award in 2010 "for ambitiously chronicling one of the hugest disasters in American history, interrogating the well-known narratives and investigating other stories that could have easily fallen through the cracks."[1]

The media portrayed New Orleans black refugees as LOOTERS, THUGS and ANIMALS - The mayor , for example, told Oprah Winfrey that "hundreds of gang members" were marauding through the Superdome.
...but now it's clear that those were mostly rumors, stupidly reported on by CNN, FOX, and other media outlets, and that some of the most serious crimes committed during that time were the work of gun-toting white males who had heard those same rumors on the news and took aim at blacks whom they thought looked suspicious. Police had heard the same rumors as everyone else, and believed them, just like everyone else had.

Ten years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is a thriving hub of music, regeneration and hope. This Guardian report meets some of the vibrant characters trying to renew the city's soul.
It was predicted that New Orleans would take a decade to recover from Hurricane Katrina. "Ten years for the city to come back, ten years for the infrastructure to come back, ten years for the music to come back", says jazz musician and resident Jessie McBride. On the 10th anniversary of the costliest natural disaster in US history, The Guardian speaks to four residents from very different neighbourhoods, who offer personal insights into the land, the music, and the recovery of New Orleans.

From Katrina to Sandy, U.S. Courts Learn to Weather Crises
Federal courts have greatly improved their response to natural disasters in the last decade, according to a new U.S. Courts video, which details lessons from four weather emergencies that shut down federal courthouses. According to the video, only a few courts in 2005 had plans to continue operations in the event of a large-scale emergency. Today, all federal courts have such plans. Similarly, court staffs are far more equipped to continue functions via teleworking in weather and other emergencies. Technology also has helped courts stay in contact with court staff and their families, and enabled the public to access electronic case files, dur

How Hurricane Rita anxiety led to the worst gridlock in Houston history. 22 Sep 18:40
The worst traffic jam in Houston history began 10 years ago today. For some, the gridlock wouldn't end until a full 24 hours later.

Technology also has helped courts stay in contact with court staff and their families, and enabled the public to access electronic case files, during emergencies. The video interviews federal judges and court staffs about lessons learned from four emergencies that shut down courts: Hurricane Katrina in 2005; a 2008 flood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a 2008 blizzard in the Northwest; and Super Storm Sandy in 2012. September is National Preparedness Month.

How Hurricane Rita anxiety led to the worst gridlock in Houston history. 22 Sep 18:40
The worst traffic jam in Houston history began 10 years ago today. For some, the gridlock wouldn't end until a full 24 hours later.
Hurricane Katrina had devastated the U.S. only a few weeks earlier. And with Hurricane Rita – documented as the strongest Gulf storm on record – on track to bash East Texas, Houstonians heeded the call to evacuate. That’s the moment residents remember best a decade later.
The promised peril from the Category 5 storm never materialized. Rita weakened to Category 3 before coming ashore in East Texas (much further east than predicted) on Sept. 24, 2005. The storm still did $12 billion in damage, but Katrina did more than $100 billion in damage. A little more than 100 deaths occurred during Rita compared to almost 2,000 during Katrina.
RELATED: 11 hoaxes and myths about Hurricane Katrina, debunked
In the Houston area, the muddled flight from the city killed almost as many people as Rita did. Some 2.5 million people hit the road ahead of the storm’s arrival, and more than 100 evacuees died in the exodus. Drivers waited in traffic for 20-plus hours, and heat stroke impaired or killed dozens. Fights broke out on the highway. A bus carrying nursing home evacuees caught fire, and 24 died.
The story later became about whether the haste was an over-reaction to Katrina. Houston Chronicle science writer Eric Berger argued today that the pre-storm anxiety made sense. Rita looked terrifying and was headed straight toward Houston with 175 mph winds and worst-case scenario potential.
BERGER: Ten years ago, Houston was a living hell
Nevertheless, Berger wrote, “state, county and city officials were unprepared.” The haphazard evacuation plan – no contraflow lanes; inadequate policies to keep gas flowing – created bedlam.

It won a Peabody Award in 2010 "for ambitiously chronicling one of the hugest disasters in American history, interrogating the well-known narratives and investigating other stories that could have easily fallen through the cracks."[1]

Exclusive (Emmy Award) video shot by Mike Theiss from ground zero of Hurricane Katrina's historic 28 foot storm surge that ripped through Gulfport, Mississippi on August 29th, 2005. This video has a time stamp to give a complete and accurate timeline from the Holiday Inn beachfront hotel located directly on the beach in Gulfport. Also, included are shots from the Theiss-Device which is a camera housing designed by Mike to be placed in a place that would be too dangerous from any human to survive. This 13 minute video will give you a sense of just how bad Katrina was on the Gulf Coast without actually putting you in harms way !!!
To see the entire version of this video about 2 hours in duration please purchase the DVD "Battle at the Beachfront". http://www.BattleAtTheBeachfront.com
We hope this documentation helps enforce a sense of storm awareness and a respect for the power of mother nature. When local officials ask you to evacuate just think of this video and ask yourself do you want to risk being put in a situation like this ?

August 29, 2015 marked the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The storm made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane , but it created a Category 5 storm surge. As WKRG's Executive Producer, I lead the WKRG team on this news special. I wrote several of the scripts, and I edited the final show product. My favorite is the opening sequence. It was surreal finding archive video of WKRG's coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

In New Orleans just before Hurricane Katrina hits, a pregnant woman gives birth prematurely. She dies and her baby is in critical condition. The baby has to be kept in a neonatal incubator. When the hurricane strikes, all the power goes out and everyone in the hospital leaves. But the baby's father stays because the baby can't be moved so he has to take care of his baby by making sure the ventilator stays on. And because there's no power, the only power source is generator that he has to crank every few minutes. So he has to stay awake while waiting for someone to come for them.
