Eating Salmiakki Taste Test | Finnish Cuisine & Finnish Food
When Audrey and I found out we'd be heading back to Finland, I instantly thought of Salmiakki. For nearly a year I've been craving this Finnish black salty liquorice, known as Salmiakki or Salmiak. Unlike sweet black licorice that I've had back home in Canada this is overwhelming salty or what some have described as 'tongue numbing.'

When Audrey and I found out we'd be heading back to Finland, I instantly thought of Salmiakki. For nearly a year I've been craving this Finnish black salty liquorice, known as Salmiakki or Salmiak. Unlike sweet black licorice that I've had back home in Canada this is overwhelming salty or what some have described as 'tongue numbing.'
http://nomadicsamuel.com/travel-stories/foreigner-who-loves-finnish-salmiakki
The first time I tried it I was instantly hooked; whereas most foreigners find it absolutely disgusting and end up spitting it out. Basically, it's a polarizing food that some find gross and others adore.
In my opinion, it is like taking licorice to a whole new level of flat our awesomeness. What gives this Finnish licorice its extremely salty and astringent taste is ammonium chloride.
This tongue numbing exotic Finnish delicacy is also popular in neighboring Nordic countries such as Sweden and Denmark.
Danish: Salmiaklakrids
Swedish: Salmiaklakrits
Although other Finnish licorice exists, Salmiakki is by far the most popular.
If any of you had the opportunity to watch the Salmiakki video we made last year, you'll recall that Audrey found it repulsive and spat it out on camera.
Thus, heading into our Salmiakki taste test this time around we already knew that I would love it and she would hate it.
Regardless of the predictable outcome I had unfinished business to do. The last time I was in Finland, I only had a chance to try the Salmiakki candy. This time around I wanted to make sure we taste tested Salmiakki chocolate, Salmiakki liquor, Salmiakki spirits and Salmiakki ice cream. Oh, I almost forgot Super Salmiakki!
http://nomadicsamuel.com/video-blog/eating-salmiakki-taste-test
When you watch this video you'll see a wide range of Salmiakki products which you can consider purchasing including the most popular brand of all - Fazer. Fazer Salmiakki is worth trying.
Will Audrey spit it out again or nearly vomit? You'll have to find out by watching ;)
If you have adventurous taste buds and you love salty foods, I highly recommend trying Salmiakki the next time you travel to Finland. Part of the joy of visiting a place is embracing the local culture. Thus, I recommend diving right in as part of experiencing Finnish culture when considering things to do in Finland.
Eating Salmiakki | Finnish Cuisine Taste Test
Osa ilon vierailevien paikka on omaksunut paikallista kulttuuria. Niinpä suosittelen sukellusta aivan osana kokee Suomen kulttuuria harkitessaan asioita Suomessa.

On our second day exploring Helsinki, Finland we give you a tour around the city with some suggested things to do in the downtown area along with a visit to Market Square to sample some Finnish food including Reindeer meatballs, grilled Salmon, potatoes, vegetables and garlic sauce.
http://nomadicsamuel.com/photo-essays/helsinki-travel-guide
Our second day started bright and early as we started exploring Helsinki on foot soon after waking up and eating breakfast. The cool breeze in the morning and lower temperatures made for ideal walking conditions; although, I'm sure Audrey would argue that point, as prefers warmer weather whereas I'm in my element when temperatures are hovering around twenty degrees of less ;)
We couldn't help but notice how quiet and empty the streets were this early in the morning. We could sometimes go an entire block or two with seeing a single other person. On our way to visit Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, we noticed a park dedicated for dogs and their owners; naturally, as pet lovers, we went to check it out but the dogs weren't as pleased by our presence. This distinct landmark cathedral offers a fantastic vantage point overlooking downtown Helsinki.
From the cathedral we continued to the main train station where we would be meeting one of Audrey's Canadian friends from back home who is studying nursing in Finland. Along the way we walked by several stores selling Finnish souvenirs; several groups of performers entertained pedestrians including a a group busking.
Soon after meeting Audrey's friend, our focus shifted towards Finnish cuisine. Specifically we wanted to try eating Finnish Reindeer meatballs. As we approached Market Square, we noticed a change in atmosphere much different from the quiet neighborhood nearby our hotel. Finnish vendors were selling everything from trinkets to local delicacies. Meanwhile, a sea of people made their way up and down the rows gobbling up delectable delights, shopping and sitting down for coffee. Although the pace was definitely lively it was nowhere near as chaotic as some of the markets we've visited in Asia, such as Jonker Street Night Market in Malacca or the Shilin Market in Taipei.
We finally found a specific stall specializing in Reindeer meatballs. After placing an order, we couldn't help but notice how enormous the meatballs actually were. These things were huge! Think gigantic! These were literally the biggest meatballs we had ever seen. To go along with the meatballs, a generous portion of round potatoes were included along with a side of greens smothered in a creamy garlic sauce.
How did the Reindeer meatballs taste? Well, they weren't nearly as distinct as they thought they would be. I have a lot of experience eating animal meat such as deer, elk and moose having grown up on Vancouver Island. I was expecting the Reindeer to have more of a pronounced and unique taste; however, it was rather nondescript, at least in the form of these meatballs, and I wouldn't have been surprised if somebody told me these were pork or chicken balls. I'm hoping to soon try Reindeer steak which I think may have more of a unique flavor.
Finally, we ended up coming back to Market Square for dinner where we ended up having the same thing; except this time we replaced the Reindeer meatballs with grilled salmon. If I had to choose between the two, the salmon would win hands down. I'm a huge salmon lover (it's probably one of my top 5 favorite foods) and this was grilled to perfection with each piece melting in my mouth.
Overall, our second day in Helsinki was very pleasant. Our plan is to do a bit of island hopping tomorrow along with a day trip to Tallinn, Estonia the following day. Although we don't actually have a lot of time left in Helsinki, I'm sure we'll make the most of it gormandizing on more salmon and hopefully some reindeer steak:

Finland is a country we've had the privilege of traveling to twice in the past year. To say it is one of new favorite countries to visit would be an understatement. From our time exploring Helsinki to our outdoor adventures, Finland is a country we'd gladly return to anytime of the year. In our Finland travel guide we present to you our entire collection of travel videos from Finland in this mammoth compilation. You can watch the entire video, coming in at nearly two hours long, or skip to a section of interest indicated by time links in the description box below. From sampling Finnish cuisine, including Salmiakki, reindeer, Karl Fazer chocolate and Karelian pie, we showcase Finnish food as much as our time spent traveling around the country kayaking, biking, horseback riding and hiking. We hope this video gives you a solid overview of the things you can do in Finland as well as all of the tasty Finnish cuisine worth sampling. This is Finland!

This is part of our Travel in Finland series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Finnish culture, Finnish arts, Finnish foods, Finnish religion and Finnish people.

3) Saapuminen Helsinkiin ja vierailevat Lonna Island | Suomen Vlog Day 1
4) Pyöräily ja melonta Helsinki | Suomi Vlog Päivä 2
5) vaellus Nuuksion ja melonta Kasnäsin | Suomen Vlog Päivä 3

Refugee in Oulu, Finland.
Same food is given to schools and day care. They don't complain.
“This no good food, yes, this no good. For dog, dog, I give for dog – no eat, dog. This for women. Problem, see!”

Licorice is one of those candy treats that some people love, some people hate. But in the great land of Finland, they try to tip the love-hate ratio by thoroughly salting their licorice with ammonium chloride, making a polarizing candy even more divisive! Good job, Finland! Subscribe: http://goo.gl/Z7lbS
Thanks to everyone who bought T-Shirts, we could make two new episodes - if more people buy, we can make more episodes! http://teespring.com/wwyet
Salmiakki probably started as a cough remedy, but thanks to steadfast national pride, Salmiakki is now a popular treat across Northern Europe. It comes in a huge variety of flavors, and is even the subject of national Salty Licorice Associations.
What crazy, disgusting, or smelly foods would you like to see us eat on the show? Have you tried Salmiakki yourself? What did you think? Would you like to keep it your mouth for 60 seconds? Do you think Georgia will benefit from the expectorant properties of Ammonium Chloride?

On Why Would You Eat That? we scour the globe for the most bizarre foods and explain why anyone would be crazy enough to eat them. Now two years to go until my daughter leaves home and I take an attempt to learn to like food. And to understand a bit more about my eating problem.

A beautiful trip to northern Europe: Helsinki - Turku - travel by snowmobile - Icehotel - Visiting Santa Claus - Rovaniemi
Our route takes us to Helsinki, Turku, the main cultural centre of the year 2011, and on to Oulu. We cross the Baltic Sea on an ice road to Hailuoto, from here we reach Kemi and further up to the far north with the destination Rovaniemi, the town close to the Arctic Circle.
We embark in Rostock, where we take a ferry to Finland. We already cross thick layers of ice.
01:30 Helsinki is the capital with a population of more than 580,000 residents. This beautiful northern city is Finland’s centre politics, economy, culture and faith.
Orthodox Christians have lived in Helsinki since the Russian rule. Their main church is the famous Uspenski Cathedral.
In Helsinki, we visit the senate square with the monument honouring Tsar Alexander the second for his Finland-friendly politics. The square is surrounded by wonderful classical buildings - the cathedral, the old senate house, the main building of the University and to the south the Sederholm House, the oldest building in the city.
03:26 Turku was named Cultural Centre in 2011 (slogan "Turku in flames"). From the 13th century when it was founded until the 19th century it was the most important city in Finland. The cathedral is the most significant example of church architecture in Finland. The best-known grave in the cathedral is the sarcophagus of Queen Karin Mänsdotter. Something really special is the Sunborn Princess Hotel, a converted luxury yacht.
6:15 Ride on a snowmobile through the wide and snow-covered landscape. We fish in ice holes and eat elk stew and reindeer steaks.
08:25 In the vicinity of Oulu we cross the Baltic sea on a layer of ice 70cm thick. On our route to Kemi we stop to look at the island of Hailuoto, connected to the main land by an ice road. On our tour with an icebreaker we stop for a very special attraction for tourists: a fun pool for "ice bathing"
11:45 Back on land we take a ride on a husky sled and let us pull through the deep white snow. In a spaciously designed nature reserve close Rovaniemi live animals like the wolf, the polecat, the lynx or the arctic fox. So we see them in an almost natural environment but still protected. Polar bears, however, are kept separately.
13:07 In our snowmobiles Snowmobiling we arrive at the end of the day at the exceptional ice-hotel. The construction of the hotel begins every year in mid-November and 5-6 weeks later, the hotel can be opened. It is undoubtable a great experience to sllep here. There is no heating and we have outside temperatures up to -40 degrees. In mid-April, we are closing the hotel, the ground starts warming up, then it doesn’t look very nice anymore. We just let it melt, by the end of June is has disappeared. The only thing left to clear up and store for next winter are a few km cables and hundreds of lights.
15:25 We attend a dancing lesson of the Finnish tango, and after this we visit knife maker. In his manufacture he produces the famous Finnish knife Puuko, a knife from elk antlers.
21:41 Certainly, at the end of our tour, there has to be the essential visit to Santa Claus, where we travel to in a sleigh, pulled by reindeer. Inside the building there is a special postal centre, staffed by elves and the legendary time clock. Santa Claus stops time there every year so he can visit all people in one night to deliver their presents.

Uudempi versio!
I was twelve when I stopped eating meat. As a teenager I dreamt of pills which would replace the meals. When I got my child it became almost too a big challenge, to feed her; shop food, cook and eat. Now two years to go until my daughter leaves home and I take an attempt to learn to like food. And to understand a bit more about my eating problem.
