Slashing at ITE College West: Police Arrest 16-Year-Old Male, Victim Sent to NUH
(SINGAPORE, 10 Mar 2015) - Police have arrested a 16-year-old male in the wake of a slashing incident at ITE College West on Tuesday, while a 19-year-old man was sent to National University Hospital (NUH).
A police spokesman told The Straits Times: "Police received a call at about 12.35pm requesting for assistance at an educational institute along Choa Chu Kang Grove. Upon arrival, it was established that a case of voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous means had occurred.
"A 16-year-old male was arrested in relation to the case."
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted at 12.40pm, and brought the 19-year-old victim to hospital for lacerations to his left arm and back.
In a statement to the media, Dr Yek Tiew Ming, the Principal of ITE College West said: "There was a fight at ITE College West this afternoon. The victim was sent to hospital, and we will render whatever assistance is required.
"We take a serious view of the matter and do not condone such an act. The case was reported to the police and is now under police investigation."
A video of the slashing had surfaced online. In it, a man in a white shirt and a pair of dark pants faces off with another man in dark clothes.
The first man then slashed at the second man with what looked like a parang, before the latter ran away. Students and a security guard looked on.
A tweet linked to another video showing what looks like the same two men involved in a fight. No parang was seen. The tweet said: "Fight earlier on involving slashing during lunch at ITE West. One got injured and almost got his fingers chopped off".
Police had cordoned off the centre atrium of the school, and a trail of blood was seen from the student services office to the front porch area.
Police investigations are ongoing.

SINGAPORE (Straits Times, 11 Feb 2015) - The Law Society last night made clear that its move to suspend M Ravi has nothing to do with his announcement to stand for election, his political views or the clients he represents.
It came after a video showing the lawyer making a scene at the society’s headquarters surfaced on YouTube on Wednesday. The 43-year-old was told on Tuesday that he must stop practising and have his medical condition, bipolar disorder, examined by his psychiatrist. The society would then consider the medical report before any decision to allow him to resume practice.
Its president, Senior Counsel Thio Shen Yi, told The Straits Times: “The council’s decision to issue a direction to Mr Ravi to temporarily cease practice is based solely on the council’s concerns that the present state of Mr Ravi’s mental condition impairs his fitness to practise law.”
After he was notified, Mr Ravi went to the society’s premises with three others to hand over his letter of response to a staff member.
The scene was captured in a 12-minute YouTube video and showed the lawyer claiming that his suspension was triggered by his bid to stand for election. He also mentioned Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and was followed by a woman holding a placard that read “Stop persecution of M Ravi”. At one point, she prevented a staff member from leaving the South Bridge Road premises until Mr Ravi intervened.
It is understood the Law Society is aware of the video but is unable to comment due to ongoing investigations.
