MOSCOW, February 25. /TASS/. A wide range of threats and challenges to Russia's security is emerging lately in the country's Arctic zone, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told the ministry's board meeting on Wednesday.

The “great thaw” underway in the Arctic has the potential to permanently open up the Northern Sea Route and connect East Asia and North-Western Europe for the first time in history. By 2040 it will be the shortest trade route between Europe and Asia and potential disputes over trade routes, maritime zones and resources that were previously inaccessible may emerge. What response should relevant European states fashion towards the Arctic? How is one of the most momentous geographical changes in history likely to affect Europe?
Ambassador Professor Alyson Bailes is presently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Iceland, a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges) and an Honorary Fellow at Somerville College, University of Oxford. Professor Bailes is also an Associate Fellow at Chatham House. From 2002-2007 Professor Bailes served as the Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Before this time, Professor Bailes had a distinguished career in the UK Diplomatic Service including postings in Hungary, the UK Delegation to NATO, Bonn, Beijing, Oslo and as British Ambassador to Finland. Among many other topics, Professor Bailes has published widely on regional security cooperation, Nordic/Baltic and West Nordic security and the emerging Arctic agenda.
This was the fifth lecture of the IES Autumn Lecture Series 2014: "The Future of European Geostrategy" jointly organised by the Institute for European Studies-VUB and the Egmont – Royal Institute for International Relations. To tweet about this lecture use the following hashtag: #EFSP14.

The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs has the pleasure of inviting you to the public seminar:
The Russian Far East as a Regional Actor in Asia
Since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his ‘Pivot to Asia’ policies two years ago, there has been heightened international debate over what the role of Russia’s Far East (RFE) regions will be in greater East Asian political and economic developments. While there has been much discussion about a growing partnership between China and Russia in the RFE, especially in the area of energy, the strategic picture is considerably more complicated, involving many sectors as well as both China and Japan as key players in RFE diplomacy. Three short presentations, based on recently published policy papers at NUPI, will examine the RFE-East Asia relationship from different perspectives, and will also explore the question of how East Asian economies can participate in the future development of the RFE.
Tid: Mandag 20.04.15, kl.14:00 Sted: NUPI , C.J. Hambros plass 2 D Påmelding
Program 14:00–15:30:
One of Three Roads: The Role of the Northern Sea Route in Evolving Sino-Russian Strategic Relations, Marc Lanteigne, Senior Research Fellow, NUPI
Views from the Pivot Point: Chinese Perceptions of Russia’s ‘Go East’ Strategy, Bjørnar Sverdrup-Thygeson, Research Fellow, NUPI
Energizing Russia’s Pivot: Japan-Russia energy relations, post-Fukushima and post-Ukraine, Wrenn Yennie Lindgren, Junior Research Fellow, NUPI
Chair: Indra Øverland, Senior Research Fellow, NUPI

Hello All!
In this episode, I've installed the Public Beta 1.20 update which includes the new GPS map functionality which allows you to change your driving routes!! Also included is a new traffic update which is sure to make you want to punch your computer!!!
I began doing Let's Play videos on YouTube with the original Euro Truck Simulator 2. Now I'm returning to those roots with the brand new Scandinavia add-on DLC!! The Scandinavia DLC is an expansion pack that opens up new territory in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Also coinciding with the new DLC is the release of update 1.17 which updates the graphics engine a bit more, providing stunning visuals, a new day/night cycle, and more!! So please, follow along with me as I once again journey throughout Europe in search of profit and trucking mayhem!!!
From the Developers:

This map expansion features Sweden, Norway and Denmark, with mile upon mile of scenic roads and numerous landmarks to see across these three beautiful Nordic countries. New ferry terminals also allow you to board ferries directly and access the coastal cities plus use new sea routes to ports in northern Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom. Discover 27 Scandinavian cities including Stockholm, Malmö, Göteborg, Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, København, Aalborg and Esbjerg...
Features:
- Improved daylight cycle and weather visuals
- Revised approach to detailed map modelling and vegetation
- Introducing 27 new cities and ports, often larger and more detailed than the base map destinations, featuring recognizable roads and landmarks highlighting uniqueness of each of the territories
- Immense nature variety across Scandinavia land (forests, fields and lakes of the south are giving way to mountainous regions filled with rock formations, cliffs, mountain valleys, and long twisty tunnels - which sometimes have even crossroads inside)
- New industries to service with over 80 new cargo types which include new food, machinery, construction and bulk cargo
12 ferry terminals new to Scandinavia plus some more added to the rest of the map, 2 large container port simulating important logistic regions of Scandinavia

This has to be one of the best paddles we've ever done. The start of this trip was just amazing. The ferry journey over was spectacular, passing the Isle of Man, and the Mull of Galloway en-route. Docking at Belfast, in perfect weather, and driving across Northern Island to Derrry, then Strabane at dusk. We crossed the border, and as night fell, there was mist rolling in off the fields, and then we found a perfect spot to overnight, right beside the sea.
Rising next morning, it was clear that the weather was about as good as it gets, warm, sunny, still, blue sky, we stopped for breakfast at Killybegs, before taking the road to Glencolumbkille. Again, the drive was superb, with a huge bank of fog rolling in off the Atlantic, and filling the low lying bays right up to the hilltops. This actually hindered us, as we had no real plan to speak of, just driving around looking for somewhere to launch. This swallowed up time, precious time, time is always precious. The slip we used was stumbled upon by total chance, I just spied it through the mist.
So out we go, paddling into the wild, wild Atlantic Ocean in the fog!! But it was fine, flat calm, and when the fog dissolved it was amazing, and as you can see, we had one fantastic day, one of the very best, this, and the ferry journey etc, all added up to the most spectacular start to any Kayaking trip I've ever had, but it didn't last, the clouds rolled in at the end of this first, perfect day, and remained unsettled for the rest of the trip.

The Suez Canal (Arabic: قناة السويس Qanāt al-Suwais) is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Opened 17 November 1869, after 10 years of construction, it allows ships to travel between Europe and South Asia without navigating around Africa thereby reducing the sea voyage distance between Europe and India by about 7,000 kilometres (4,300 mi). The northern terminus is Port Said; the southern terminus is Port Tewfik at the city of Suez. Ismailia is on its west bank, 3 km (1.9 mi) from the half-way point. In 2012, 17,225 vessels traversed the canal (47 per day).
When built, the canal was 164 km (102 mi) long and 8 m (26 ft) deep. After several enlargements, it is 193.30 km (120.11 mi) long, 24 m (79 ft) deep and 205 metres (673 ft) wide. It consists of the northern access channel of 22 km (14 mi), the canal itself of 162.25 km (100.82 mi) and the southern access channel of 9 km (5.6 mi).
The canal is single-lane with passing places in the "Ballah By-Pass" and the Great Bitter Lake. It contains no locks; seawater flows freely through it. In general, the canal north of the Bitter Lakes flows north in winter and south in summer. The current south of the lakes changes with the tide at Suez.
The canal is owned and maintained by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) of Egypt. Under the Convention of Constantinople, it may be used "in time of war as in time of peace, by every vessel of commerce or of war, without distinction of flag."
In August 2014, construction was launched to construct a second canal, the New Suez Canal, for half of the route of the canal, costing $8.4 billion, to increase the canal's capacity. Funding was arranged by issuing interest-bearing investment certificates exclusively to Egyptian entities and individuals and the target amount was collected over only six working days. The expansion is expected to double the capacity of the Suez Canal from 49 to 97 ships a day. Construction of the project is expected to take a year.
Nile–Red Sea Canal(s)
Main article: Canal of the Pharaohs
Ancient west–east canals were built to facilitate travel from the Nile river to the Red Sea. One smaller canal is believed to have been constructed under the auspices of Senusret IIor Ramesses II. Another canal, probably incorporating a portion of the first, was constructed under the reign of Necho II, but the only fully functional canal was engineered and completed by Darius I
2nd millennium BC
The legendary Sesostris (likely either Pharaoh Senusret II or Senusret III of the Twelfth dynasty of Egypt is suggested to have perhaps started work on an ancient canal joining the Nile with the Red Sea (1897 BC – 1839 BC). (It is said that in ancient times the Red Sea reached northward to the Bitter Lakes and Lake Timsah.
In his Meteorology, Aristotle wrote:
One of their kings tried to make a canal to it (for it would have been of no little advantage to them for the whole region to have become navigable; Sesostris is said to have been the first of the ancient kings to try), but he found that the sea was higher than the land. So he first, and Darius afterwards, stopped making the canal, lest the sea should mix with the river water and spoil it.
Strabo wrote that Sesostris started to build a canal, and Pliny the Elder wrote:
165. Next comes the Tyro tribe and, on the Red Sea, the harbour of the Daneoi, from which Sesostris, king of Egypt, intended to carry a ship-canal to where the Nile flows into what is known as the Delta; this is a distance of over 60 miles. Later the Persian king Darius had the same idea, and yet again Ptolemy II, who made a trench 100 feet wide, 30 feet deep and about 35 miles long, as far as the Bitter Lakes.
In the second half of the 19th century, French cartographers discovered the remnants of an ancient north–south canal past the east side of Lake Timsah and ending near the north end of the Great Bitter Lake. This proved to be the celebrated canal made by the Persian king Darius I, as his stele commemorating its construction was found at the site. (This ancient, second canal may have followed a course along the shoreline of the Red Sea when it once extended north to Lake Timsah. In the 20th century the northward extension of this ancient canal was discovered, extending from Lake Timsah to the Ballah Lakes. This was dated to the Middle Kingdom of Egypt by extrapolating the dates of ancient sites along its course.
