All hydropower plants in Tanzania are being switched off because a lack of rain
All hydropower plants in Tanzania are being switched off because a lack of rain has led to low water levels in the country's dams.
Hydro-electricity generation in Tanzania has fallen to 20% of capacity, making it difficult for the dams to operate.
It is the first time the East African Nation has closed all Hydro Plants, which generate 35% of its electricity.

Bicaz-Stejaru Hydro Power Plant is a hydropower development on the Bistriţa River river, near Bicaz, Romania.
The project was started and finished in the 1950s. It consists of a dam, a reservoir and a hydro power plant.
The dam is a reinforced concrete structure with a height of 127 m; it formed and holds Bicaz Lake reservoir, also known as Mountain Spring Lake ("Lacul Izvorul Muntelui").
The reservoir is the largest artificial lake in Romania; it manages river levels downstream, provides fishing, attracts tourism, fuels the power plant, and controls flooding.
The Oak Hydropower plant ("Hidrocentrala Stejaru") is equipped with six turbines (four-27.5 MW and two-50 MW turbines) for a total installed capacity of 210 MW. The plant generates an average of 500 GWh of electricity per year, at a capacity factor of 30%; it has produced over 20 billion MWh of electricity in the first 50 years since commissioning.

In September, Reclamation’s maintenance crew at Flaming Gorge Dam had the rare task of disassembling one of three power generators at the facility, for a scheduled ‘rewedge.’ For many on the crew, this was a first experience—the last rewedge occurring more than 20-years ago. “This is a unique experience for us to see a unit all torn apart like this … to see the internal workings of everything.” said apprentice plant mechanic, Eric Johnson. “It’s a big process for us here at the plant. All trades are involved in the effort.”
The Flaming Gorge Powerplant produces approximately 500,000,000 kilowatt hours of energy annually which is enough to serve about 50,000 households. Take a sneak peek inside the facility and follow the path of water from reservoir to turbine in this brief overview.

When faced with the need for an efficient bearing solution for the 242-MW Osage hydropower plant, Ameren sought an option that would extend bearing life and found bearings made of lignum vitae wood fit the bill.
By Alan Sullivan and Phil Thompson
In 1939, the world was thrust into its second great war of the new century with the German invasion of Poland. World War II would eventually involve more than 30 countries and 100 million people. To equip the massive war machine, the world’s resources were tapped. Petroleum was used for fuel, steel for ships and guns, and lignum vitae for bearings on the ships’ propeller drive shafts.
While the natural lignum vitae material was replaced long ago by a new breed of synthetic bearing materials, those of us in the hydropower industry are familiar with the name and its history. So this story is sort of like the dash you see on a grave stone between the date of birth and date of death. It is during the dash that a life was lived and the story of someone’s life unfolded. Except this story is different. The dash does not represent the time from birth to death, it represents a little-known story from birth to rebirth, a new life for an old friend with a renewed purpose.

Report: China Completes Tibet's Biggest Hydropower Plant

China has completed the construction of the Zangmu hydropower facility in Tibet, the largest so far to be built in the region, the company in charge of building the project said on Tuesday.
The project on the Yarlung Zangbo river, the upstream section of the transboundary Brahmaputra, is located around 140 kilometres from the regional capital of Lhasa and cost 9.6 billion yuan ($1.52 billion) to build, said Gezhouba Group, one of China's biggest state dam builders, on its website.
The investment was provided by the China Huaneng Group, China's biggest power firm, which will also operate the plant that comprises six units. The project's first unit began generating power in 2011.
All six units have now been completed and connected to the grid. With a combined capacity of 510 megawatts, the Zangmu facility will supply 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours of power to the grid annually, or enough to meet the needs of more than 600,000 residents based on Chinese per capita power use in 2014.
The 2,900-km Brahmaputra flows southeast from Tibet through the Himalayas into northeast India's Arunachal Pradesh before entering Bangladesh and merging with the lower section of the Ganges, when it empties into the Bay of Bengal.
India has expressed concern that upstream dams could disrupt downstream water supplies.
Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Tuesday that the two sides continue to communicate on the issue.
"China pays great attention to the issue of source water protection for downstream regions. Experts from both sides have also been in close contact," she said. "We are also willing to fully consider India's relevant concerns and continue to stay in close contact with India about this."
The Brahmaputra in Tibet was identified in China's 2011-2015 energy "five-year plan" as one of the key sites for hydropower development, along with two other transboundary rivers in southwest Yunnan province, the Salween and the Mekong.
China's hydropower capacity reached 300 gigawatts last year, exceeding its 2015 target a year in advance, but the pace of construction is expected to slow over the next five years with the power market in surplus and the grid already struggling to take on new plants.

Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant (Icelandic Kárahnjúkavirkjun) is a hydroelectric power plant in Fljótsdalshérað municipality in eastern Iceland designed to produce 4,600 gigawatt-hours (17,000 TJ) annually for Alcoa's Fjardaál aluminum smelter 75 kilometres (47 mi) to the east in Reyðarfjörður. With the installed capacity of 690 megawatts (930,000 hp), the plant is the largest hydroelectric power plant in Iceland. The project, named after nearby Mount Kárahnjúkur, involves damming the Jökulsá á Dal river and the Jökulsá í Fljótsdal river with five dams, creating three reservoirs. Water from the reservoirs is then diverted through 73 kilometres (45 mi) of underground water tunnels and down a 420-metre (1,380 ft) vertical penstock towards a single underground power station. The smelter became fully operational in 2008 and the hydro-power project was completed in 2009.

The Sutlej River (alternatively spelled as Satluj River) (Punjabi: ਸਤਲੁਜ, Hindi: सतलुज, Sanskrit : शतद्रु (shatadru) Urdu: درياۓ ستلُج ) is the longest of the five rivers that flow through the historic crossroads region of Punjab in northern India and Pakistan. It is located north of the Vindhya Range, south of the Hindu Kush segment of the Himalayas, and east of the Central Sulaiman Range in Pakistan.
The Sutlej is sometimes known as the Red River. It is the easternmost tributary of the Indus River. Its source is Lake Rakshastal in Tibet. From there, under the Tibetan name Langqên Zangbo (Elephant River), it flows at first west-northwest for about 260 kilometres (160 mi) to the Shipki La pass, entering India in Himachal Pradesh state. It then turns slightly, heading west-southwest for about 360 kilometres (220 mi) to meet the Beas River near Makhu, Firozpur district, Punjab state.
Continuing west-southwest, the Sutlej enters Pakistan about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) east of Bhedian Kalan, Kasur District, Punjab province, continuing southwest to water the ancient and historical former Bahawalpur princely state.
About 17 kilometres (11 mi) north of Uch Sharif, the Sutlej unites with the Chenab River, forming the Panjnad River, which finally flows into the Indus river about 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of the city of Bahawalpur. The area to the southeast on the Pakistani side of the Indian border is called the Cholistan Desert and, on the Indian side, the Thar Desert.
The Indus then flows through a gorge near Sukkur and the fertile plains region of Sindh, forming a large delta region between the border of Gujarat, India and Pakistan, finally terminating in the Arabian Sea near the port city of Karachi, Pakistan.
Contrary to the claims of Punjab state in India, a small part of Panchkula district in Haryana state is part of the Sutlej river basin area.
The waters of the Sutlej are allocated to India under the Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan, and are mostly diverted to irrigation canals in India. There are several major hydroelectric projects on the Sutlej, including the 1,000 MW Bhakra Dam, the 1,000 MW Karcham Wangtoo Hydroelectric Plant, and the 1,530 MW Nathpa Jhakri Dam. There has been a proposal to build a 214-kilometre (133 mi) long heavy freight canal, to be known as the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL), in India to connect the Sutlej and Yamuna rivers. The project is intended to connect the Ganges, which flows to the east coast of the subcontinent, with points west, via Pakistan. When completed, the SYL would enable inland shipping from India's east coast to its west coast (on the Arabian sea) without having to round the southern tip of India by sea, vastly shortening shipping distances, alleviating pressures on seaports, avoiding sea hazards, creating business opportunities along the route, raising real estate values, raising tax revenue, and establishing important commercial links and providing jobs for north-central India's large population. However, the proposal has met with obstacles and has been referred to the Supreme Court of India.
The Karcham Wangtoo Hydroelectric Plant is a 1000MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric power station on the Sutlej River in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The dam and power station are located between the villages of Karcham and Wangtoo where the plant also gains its name. Jaypee Karcham Hydro Corporation Limited of Jaypee Group signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the dam in 1993 and after years of delays, construction on the power station began on 18 November 2005. The first generator was commissioned in May 2011, the second in June and the final two in September. The 98 m (322 ft) tall dam at Karcham (31°30′00.26″N 78°10′39.54″E) diverts a substantial portion of the Sutlej into a 10.48 m (34.4 ft) diameter and 17.2 km (10.7 mi) long headrace tunnel to the underground power station downstream at Wangtoo. At the station, the water powers four 250 MW Francis turbine-generators before it is sent back into the Sutlej via a 1.2 km (0.75 mi) long tailrace tunnel. The difference in elevation between the dam and the power station affords a gross hydraulic head of 298 m (978 ft). Water not diverted by the dam is sent over the spillway and down the normal course of the river. The main spillway is along the crest of the dam and is controlled by six radial gates. Just upstream of the dam is the 300 MW Baspa II Hydroelectric Plant and downstream of the Karcham Wangtoo is the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Dam.
The Nathpa Jhakri Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Satluj River in Himachal Pradesh, India. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power production and it supplies a 1,500 MW underground power station with water. Before reaching the power station, water is diverted through a 27.4 km (17 mi) headrace tunnel. Construction on the project began in 1993 and it was complete in 2004.

The Iron Gate Hydropower and Navigation System (HPNS) is one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken in Europe, built to provide cost-effective and permanent utilization of available hydropower and to create adequate conditions for navigation along the Iron Gate stretch of the Danube. This system is built on part of the Danube River shared by Serbia and Romania , and since 1963 jointly managed by two countries, through the Joint Commission and its bodies.
The idea of utilizing the hydropower potential and improving navigation along the stretch of the Danube shared by Serbia and Romania dates back many years. Its implementation began after World War II, when a declaration was signed by Yugoslavia and Romania in which the two countries agreed to jointly explore the possibility of constructing hydro-power plants within the Iron Gate stretch of the Danube (Bucharest, 1956), and another to form a Joint Project Management and Coordination Committee.
Construction of the Iron Gate 1 dam began in September of 1964. In July of 1969, a navigation lock on the left (Romanian) bank was commissioned and in August of 1970, the first hydropower generators were placed on-line. The entire facility started operations on 16 May 1972.
An agreement between the Federal Executive Assembly of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Romania, addressing conditions for expansion of cooperation in the utilization of the hydropower potential of the Danube River (1977), approved the Iron Gate 2 construction project. Construction of this system began in December of 1977 and the hydro-power plants achieved their design capacities in 1986. Additional hydro-power plants, on the main stream and on the Gogos branch, were built in 1994 and 2000, respectively.

Budhi Gandaki Hydro power Project is a storage type project located in Central/ western development region on the Budhi Gandaki river of Nepal. This project was identified during the Gandaki Basin Study in late 70's. In 1984, a prefeasibility study of the project was prepared. The ongoing feasibility study of the project has recommended 1200 MW capacity plant with FSL 540 masl.
Location and Access:
The project lies in Gorkha and Dhading districts in Western/ Central Development region of Nepal. The project site is accessible through Benighat (At about a distance of 80 km from Kathmandu) on Prithvi Highway (Kathmandu - Pokhara). From Benighat, a motorable composite bridge can be used to cross the Trishuli River and access the Dam and Powerhouse site both of which are at a distance of about 1.5 km from the road head. - Video direction by : Sandesh Ghimire

Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant (Icelandic Kárahnjúkavirkjun) is a hydroelectric power plant in eastern Iceland designed to produce 4,600 gigawatt-hours (17,000 TJ) annually for Alcoa's Fjardaál aluminum smelter 75 kilometres (47 mi) to the east in Reyðarfjörður. The smelter became fully operational in 2008 and the hydro-power project was completed in 2009.[1]
The Kárahnjúkastífla Dam is the centerpiece of the five dams and the largest of its type in Europe, standing 193 metres (633 ft) tall with a length of 730 metres (2,400 ft) and comprising 8.5 million cubic metres (300×106 cu ft) of material.

The project has been criticised for its environmental impact and its use of foreign workers.
