И. Nino Rota (December 3, 1911 - April 10, 1979) was an Italian composer. He is particularly remembered for his work on film scores, especially The Godfather series and a number of films by Federico Fellini.
Rota was born into a musical family in Milan, and studied at the conservatory there under Ildebrando Pizzetti. Later, the conductor Arturo Toscanini encouraged him to go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to study. This he did, where he worked under Fritz Reiner, amongst others. He later returned to Milan, where he wrote a thesis on the renaissance composer Gioseffo Zarlino.

Alexey Rybnikov - Music for Films
One of the greatest Soviet film composers, Alexey Rybnikov could perhaps be viewed as the Russian François de Roubaix - an artist best known for scoring mainstream theatrical and television films, as well as countless children’s movies and shows. Although classically trained, Rybnikov fell in love with rock n’ roll, and eventually electronic music, leading him to briefly suspend classical ambitions in order to work primarily in the world of cinema and television throughout the 1970s and 80s.
Shortly before the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Rybnikov returned to composing classical music, a prolific output that includes six symphonies a

Philippe Sarde - Music for Films
One of the most versatile and talented French film composers, with over 200 scores on his resumé, Philippe Sarde is unfortunately little known outside of his home country. Encouraged by his mother, an opera singer, he became interested in music from the early age of three. He conducted a brief section of Carmen at the Paris Opera when he was four. At the age of five he began experimenting with sound recording and made his first short films during his adolescence. A passionate cinephile, Sarde could not decide between being a filmmaker or a musician until he showed one of his short films to his friends and received compliments mostly about his

Georges Auric - Music for Films
Georges Auric was a French composer best known for his film scores and ballets. In these and other works, he was among those who reacted against the chromatic harmonic language and Symbolist structures of Claude Debussy. Auric studied under Vincent d’Indy and Albert Roussel in Paris, and in 1920 the critic Henri Collet included him in the group he called Les Six, young French composers under the informal patronage of Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau. Auric wrote music criticism for the periodicals Marianne, Paris-Soir, and Nouvelles Littéraires and was artistic director of the Paris Opéra and Opéra-Comique (1962–68).

One of the leading composers of electronic music in Russia since the late '60s, Eduard Artemiev is mostly known for his soundtracks for Andrei Tarkovsky's experimental science fiction films Solaris, The Mirror, and Stalker. He has also worked on films by Nikita Mikhalkov (Unfinished Piece for a Player Piano, Oblomov), Andrei Konchalovsky (Sibiriada, The Odyssey), and Hollywood productions. He has also written orchestral works and pieces fusing electronic and rock idioms. His music was hard to find during the Communist era. Since the early '90s, reissues and collections have multiplied, fostered by Artemiev's successes on the screen.

The Music of Vladimir Cosma
One of France and Europe's most distinguished film composers, Vladimir Cosma scored more than 150 films and TV productions. Although he enjoyed almost immediate success in comedies, he continued to experiment with different styles and genres, and this versatility brought him wide international acclaim.
Born on April 13, 1940, in Bucharest, Romania, to the family of a renowned conductor and concert pianist, Cosma studied music from his early years onward, eventually attending the National Conservatory in Bucharest (from which he graduated with two first prizes, for violin and composition). In 1963, he went to Paris to advance his studies at t

In 1961 Delerue began another important association with director Philippe De Broca, lasting some 16 films.
In the early 60s Delerue’s career developed further with his involvement in British films. In 1963 he scored French Dressing, controversial director Ken Russell’s feature debut, and also Russell’s Women In Love (1969), with its famous nude wrestling sequence. By the early 70s, after completing one of his best scores for The Conformist, an Italian-French-West German production, Delerue broke into Hollywood, and subsequently lived in Los Angeles for several years. Even so, for the majority of the time he continued to work in France. His initial US scores included Frankenheimer’s The Horsemen; The Day Of The Dolphin; Fred Zinnemann’s Julia; and A Little Romance (1979), for which Delerue received an Academy Award.
In 1985, he composed a new score for Alexander Volkov’s 1927 silent film Casanova. His last few scores, in the early 90s, included Black Robe; Curly Sue; Count A Lonely Cadence; Mister Johnson; American Friends; and the French production Dien Bien Phu (1992). Delerue died shortly after the latter film had been previewed at the Berlin Festival. The London Sessions volumes 1-3. Delerue was a Commander of Arts and Letters, one of France’s highest honours.

Nino Rota - Music for the films of Federico Fellini
Rota wrote his first film score in 1944 for Zaza, a film directed by Renato Castellani. He later met the director Federico Fellini while the latter was working on his first film, Lo Sceicco Bianco. The two collaborated on many occasions, with Rota’s score for 8 1/2 often cited as one of the main factors which makes the film more cohesive.
His score for Fellini’s Juliet of the Spirits (1965) included a collaboration with Eugene Walter on the song, “Go Milk the Moon” (cut from the final version of the film), and they teamed again for the song “What Is Youth,” part of Rota’s score for Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet.

Shortly before the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Rybnikov returned to composing classical music, a prolific output that includes six symphonies and two rock operas.
Nevertheless most Russians know Rybnikov for his film music, which has become iconic and representative of a nostalgia for a lost time. As Soviet mainstream cinema of the 1970s and early 80s was steeped in fabulism and fantasy, Rybnikov’s music embodies many of the predominant narratives so popular at the time: folk and fairy tales, adventure stories, classical adaptations, sci-fi genres, and animation. His style could be classified as baroque rock, with a propensity for highly intricate melodic beauty.
Among the most popular of Rybnikov’s scores are for children’s films like Treasure Island (1971), The Big Space Adventure (1974), The Adventures of Buratino (1975), The Little Red Riding Hood (1977), The Star Boy (1983), as well as lyrical fantasies including That Very Same Munchausen (1979) and To the Stars By Hard Ways (1980).

A passionate cinephile, Sarde could not decide between being a filmmaker or a musician until he showed one of his short films to his friends and received compliments mostly about his music. He entered the Paris Conservatory where he studied under Noël Gallon. After writing songs for Régine, Sarde was offered to score Claude Sautet's 1969 film Les Choses de la Vie. There began a partnership that spanned 25 years and 11 films. Sarde also established close association with directors Bertrand Tavernier, Pierre Granier-Deferre, Georges Lautner, André Téchiné, and Jacques Doillon. The composer's other important collaborations included The Tenant and the Oscar-nominated score for Tess (both for director Roman Polanski), Bertrand Blier's Beau-Père, Alain Corneau's Fort Saganne, and Marshall Brickman's Lovesick, The Manhattan Project, and Sister Mary Explains It All. Director Georges Lautner said that he was constantly amazed by the composer's ability to find a unique approach to each film that he scored. Masterfully and unconventionally arranged, Sarde's soundtracks were often graced by the presence of such world-class musicians as Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Stéphane Grappelli, and Maurice Vander. ~ Yuri German, Rovi

Auric’s works are characterized by a type of musical irony, mingling popular tunes with sophisticated harmony. His most notable compositions are the ballet Les Matelots (1925; “The Sailors”) and his film scores for René Clair’s À nous la liberté! (1931) and for the film biography of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Moulin Rouge (1952), which included the popular hit “Where Is Your Heart?” (“The Song from Moulin Rouge”). Auric’s other works include an “overture” for orchestra (1938), songs, chamber music, and music for ballets produced by Serge Diaghilev, Jean-Louis Barrault, and Cocteau.

wn.com/Georges Auric Music For Films

Eduard Artemiev - Music for the Films of Nikita Mikhalkov
Artemiev is a classically trained composer and was a graduate from the Moscow Conservatory when he studied in Yuri Shaporin's class of composition. His career completely changed the day he met Eugene Murzin in 1960. The engineer had created a unique photo-electronic synthesizer (a machine that translated drawings on glass plates into sounds) back in 1955 and only a handful of composers had tried to explore its potential. Soon Artemiev became one of the select few. His interest in electronic music supplanted orchestral cares. His first major works were "Mosaic" (1967) and "Twelve Glimpses in the World of Sound" (1969).
In the 1970s, Artemiev worked at the Moscow Electronic Studio where avant-garde artists from many fields met to listen and discuss music. That led to his work with Tarkovsky, a collaboration that yielded some of his most-celebrated music. One of the first albums to document his music on another support than film was the soundtrack to Sibiriada (Sibériade), released in 1979 by the French ethnomusicological label Le Chant du Monde. By the end of the decade, the composer was moving a few steps away from the avant-garde. Strongly influenced by the electronic developments in rock music (progressive rock, Tangerine Dream), he invented his own personal form of "new simplicity" while trying to appeal to a new audience. The Olympic committee for the 1980 Moscow games commissioned him a piece for the opening ceremony and Artemiev wrote the cantata "Ode to the Herald of Good," which fuses orchestra, choir, rock group, and synthesizers. The piece, along with excerpts from various soundtracks, was released in 1984 on the LP Mood-Pictures by the U.S.S.R. state label Melodia -- Artemiev's only domestic release before the perestroika.
The '80s saw him come back to orchestral music: quasi-symphonies ("The Seven Gates into the World of Satori"), cantatas ("The Warmth of the Earth"), and more film music. When the Communist regime crumbled and the works of the aforementioned filmmakers were reissued on home video cassettes, Artemiev's reputation grew considerably. He stopped composing electro-acoustic music after "I'd Like to Return" (1993) to focus on his opera "Raskolnikov" (from the name of Dostoyevsky's hero in Crime and Punishment), completed almost a decade later, and more film soundtracks (more than 125 by 2001). Since 1997, his son, Artemiy Artemiev, has released many of his works on his label Electroshock. - François Couture

In 1963, he went to Paris to advance his studies at the French Conservatory, where, in addition to his classical background, he developed an interest in jazz, folk music, and film music.
Between 1964 and 1967, he toured the world as a concert violinist, visiting the U.S., Latin America, and Southeast Asia. A meeting with popular film composer Michel Legrand became the first step toward his future career. Cosma always credits Legrand's importance, though he also admits the influence of such composers as Burt Bacharach and Henry Mancini.
In 1967, he began his long-running partnership with film director Yves Robert, for whom he scored the international hits Alexandre (1967), The Tall Blond With One Black Shoe (1972), and The Return of the Tall Blond (1974), as well as the critically acclaimed dramas My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle (both in 1990). He also wrote the music for several comedies directed by Francis Veber and Gerard Oury, starring such hit French comedians as Pierre Richard and Louis de Funes.
One of his biggest international hits was the Erik Satie-inspired soundtrack for Diva (1981), for which he was awarded his first Cesar (the French equivalent of the Oscar). He received another Cesar for Le Bal (1983), and the main instrumental theme from it became a substantial hit worldwide. Among the other awards given to Vladimir Cosma are the Sept d'Or, the French TV award for L'été '36 (1986), and a Cannes Film Festival award for the entire body of his work.

Jorge Arriagada - Music for Films 1
Jorge Arriagada (born 1943) is a Chilean film composer, perhaps best known for his long-term collaboration with director Raúl Ruiz.
Arriagada studied composition and orchestral conduction at the National Conservatory of Music in Santiago. He then obtained a scholarship from the French government that enabled him to study expressionism with Max Deutsch, who was Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg's friend and student. He also studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and orchestral conduction with Pierre Boulez. In 1972, the Guggenheim Foundation in New York awarded him a fellowship for his contribution in the field of electronic music.
Over the years he has explored many different genres, including classical, contemporary and folk music as well as jazz and tango. Arriagada has been living in France since 1966, working with experienced as well as promising directors while composing the scores of 44 of Raúl Ruiz's films.
A few of these pieces of music were posted by me a few years ago, but in regrettable quality. So I am reuploading them now in this much more presentable two-part anthology.
