National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo by Zaha Hadid Architects
Area: 290,000 m², Capacity: 80,000 people
Estimated cost: US $1 billion, Estimated completion: March 2019
The National Stadium used for the 1964 Summer Olympics, located in Kasumigaoka, in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, will essentially be torn down in 2015 to make way for the new venue in time for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Summer Olympics. It will also be the future home of the Japanese national football team.
The new Tokyo National Stadium is more than a large sports facility designed to the highest design specifications and functional requirements. It is a piece of the city's fabric, and urban connector which enhances and modulates people moving through the site from different directions and points of access. The elevated ground connections govern the flow of people through the site, effectively carving the geometric forms of the building.

Tokyo is one of three cities bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games, with the decision to be made on September 7.
The Japanese city is the only one of the candidates, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo, to have hosted an Olympic Games before, in 1964.
Tokyo bid organisers emphasise the compactness of their offer for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with 85 percent of the venues located within an 8 km (5 mile) radius of the Olympic Village.
Of 35 Olympic venues, 20 would be built anew, and of those eleven would be permanent additions to Tokyo's sports facilities.
Many of the venues would be clustered in the developing Tokyo bay area of the city, including a number of manmade islands such as Odaiba and Wakasu which would host sports events.
Plans to renovate the Olympic stadium used in the 1964 games have been shelved after Tokyo secured the 2019 Rugby World Cup competition. Now the old stadium will be demolished, if Tokyo wins the bid, and a futuristic new Olympic stadium will be constructed to seat 80,000 spectators. It is planned that this new stadium would host rugby and soccer matches during the games as well as the athletics events and opening and closing ceremonies.
The Tokyo 2020 bid president has assured the International Olympic Committee that the city has already made financial provision for the games with a large reserve fund set aside to pay for the event.
As Tokyo is already a densely-populated city, it has a good public transport system and good communication links.
The bid took a dent when Tokyo governor and 2020 bid committee chairman Naoki Inose made remarks detrimental to rival candidate Istanbul during a newspaper interview. He subsequently apologised for his remarks.
After presenting the Tokyo bid to IOC members, Inose said: "The presentation went well, we didn't make mistakes. The charm of Tokyo worked. This is the appropriate city for Olympics Games and Paralympics Games 2020."
The IOC will deliver its verdict after a September 7 meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Tokyo has been awarded the 2020 summer Olympic Games on Saturday, beating Istanbul in a head-to-head vote. Their cause was helped by a charismatic plea from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who promised that the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant was "under control."
Tokyo won by a landslide 60 votes to Istanbul's 36, after Madrid had been eliminated in the first round of voting.
One insider claimed that the Japanese capital had won a "least-ugly" contest, with Madrid burdened by the Spanish economy and Istanbul having been hit by anti-government protests. Report by Sarah Kerr.

wn.com/Tokyo Wins Bid To Host 2020 Olympic And Paralympic Games

IOC leaders dropped wrestling from the Olympic program on Tuesday, a surprise decision that removes one of the oldest Olympic sports from the 2020 Games.
The IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon -- the event considered most at risk -- and remove wrestling instead from its list of 25 "core sports."
The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.
Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.
"This is a process of renewing and renovating the program for the Olympics," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "In the view of the executive board, this was the best program for the Olympic Games in 2020. It's not a case of what's wrong with wrestling, it is what's right with the 25 core sports."
Adams said the decision was made by secret ballot over several rounds, with members voting each time on which sport should not be included in the core group. IOC President Jacques Rogge did not vote.
Wrestling was voted out from a final group that also included modern pentathlon, taekwondo and field hockey, officials familiar with the vote told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the voting details were not made public.
The board voted after reviewing a report by the IOC program commission report that analyzed 39 criteria, including television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation and popularity. With no official rankings or recommendations contained in the report, the final decision by the 15-member board was also subject to political, emotional and sentimental factors.
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White tweeted his displeasure with the IOC's plans: " IOC come on seriously wrestling is a sport that almost every country does and you drop it I'm pissed #saveolympicwrestling".
The governing body of wrestling, known by its French initials FILA, called the IOC's move an "aberration" and said it was "greatly astonished" by the decision.
FILA says it will take "all necessary measures" to convince IOC members to maintain wrestling's Olympic status when they meet in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in September.
Still, FILA President Raphael Martinetti faces criticism when his ruling board meets this weekend in Thailand.
Russian federation leader Mikhail Mamiashvili said FILA is the problem, and Martinetti's tasks include defending "wrestling's place before the IOC."
German official Jannis Zamanduridis said "a piece of the Olympic idea is dying with this decision."
Wrestling featured 344 athletes competing in 11 medal events in freestyle and seven in Greco-Roman at last year's London Olympics. Women's wrestling was added to the Olympics at the 2004 Athens Games.
Wrestling will now join seven other sports in applying for inclusion in 2020. The others are a combined bid from baseball and softball, plus karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. They will be vying for a single opening in 2020.
The IOC executive board will meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, to decide which sport or sports to propose for 2020 inclusion. The final vote will be made at the IOC session, or general assembly, in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
It is extremely unlikely that wrestling would be voted back in so soon after being removed by the executive board.
"Today's decision is not final," Adams said. "The session is sovereign, and the session will make the final decision."
The last sports removed from the Olympics were baseball and softball, voted out by the IOC in 2005 and off the program since the 2008 Beijing Games. Golf and rugby will be joining the program at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Previously considered under the closest scrutiny was modern pentathlon, which has been on the Olympic program since the 1912 Stockholm Games. It was created by French baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic movement, and combines fencing, horse riding, swimming, running and shooting.
Klaus Schormann, president of governing body UIPM, lobbied hard to protect his sport's Olympic status and it paid off in the end.
"We have promised things, and we have delivered," he said after Tuesday's decision. "That gives me a great feeling. It also gives me new energy to develop our sport further and never give up."

The BBC will broadcast the next five Olympics - Summer and Winter - on its television, radio and online platforms.
It had already secured the rights for the 2016, 2018 and 2020 Games.
Now an "innovative" partnership with Discovery Communications ensures the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing and the Summer Games two years later will also be broadcast by the corporation.
The announcement ensures the BBC will continue to be the free-to-air home of the Olympics until 2024.
"The Olympic Games is one of the nation's most treasured sporting events," said Barbara Slater, director of BBC Sport.
"This is an extensive package of rights that ensures we can offer the best of the Games, across TV, radio, online and digital, maximising the reach and impact of the BBC.
"This ground-breaking partnership also shows how the BBC can collaborate and work with others to continue to bring the very best in sport to licence fee payers."
The next four Olympics take place in Rio de Janeiro (2016), Pyeongchang (2018), Tokyo (2020) and Beijing (2022).
The venue for the 2024 Games is yet to be decided.
The 2012 Games in London were watched on the BBC by more than 50 million people in the United Kingdom.
Seven million people accessed the BBC website every day, with 111 million requests for video and more than two million people downloading the app.
UK Sport recently predicted Britain could win as many as 79 medals in Rio, where the Games begin on 5 August.
Mo Farah will be attempting to win another Olympic double after taking 10,000m and 5,000m gold in London, while Jessica Ennis-Hill will defend her heptathlon crown.
The BBC prides itself on bringing the biggest sporting moments to the public," said Tony Hall, director general of the BBC.
"I'm delighted that through our new partnership with Discovery, the BBC will continue to carry the torch for great sporting coverage right through to the 2024 Games.
"While the BBC has had to take some tough financial decisions, this partnership underlines our commitment to making world class sport available to all."
As part of the agreement, Discovery will sub-license from the BBC exclusive pay-TV rights to the 2018 and 2020 Olympic Games.
David Zaslav, president and chief executive officer of Discovery Communications, said the deal was "a win for UK sports fans".
He added: "For 30 years, our two organisations have charted new frontiers with co-production partnerships in factual and natural history programming.
"Now we join together once again to bring the most compelling stories of human ambition, sacrifice and achievement to people across the UK."

I build the Tokyo Olympic Stadium for the 2020 Olympic Games by Zaha Hadid in Minecraft. Well, I kind of did. I changed some things to the stadium. Especially the back of the stadium. The back doesn't even look close like the original one!
This stadium doesn't exist yet. It was a planned stadium in Tokyo, but the city cancelled it. I was very upset about this so I made this in my city, so it'll be at least somewhere, kind of.
*The stadium was under consturction for 6 months but I have not worked on it the full6 months, there were some pauses in between. Construction began on july 30th

Eyes 2024 Olympics, Tokyo struggles to plan 2020 games - [Part 1]

What happened to Hadid’s stadium plans?
Hadid’s design called to mind a Rebel Alliance spacecraft out of “Star Wars,” frozen in a holding pattern in the concrete jungle of Tokyo. With a seating capacity of about 80,000 and total floor space of more than 71 acres, plans were for the new structure to replace the main stadium for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the heart of the Japanese capital. The old structure was torn down in May, and the site has been ready for the new stadium construction.
The Japan Sport Council chose Hadid’s design in 2012 from 46 entries, and at the time the cost was estimated at $1 billion. But this year, Japan’s government estimated it would actually be more than $2 billion.
That prompted an outpouring of criticism; even Oscar-nominated actor Ken Watanabe voiced skepticism. “It’s strange news that Japan wants to surprise the world by trying to build a gymnasium that will continuously need a lot money when the country itself carries enormous debt and needs to balance its books,” he wrote in Japanese on Twitter. His note was retweeted 26,000 times and was marked a favorite by 12,000 users.
In mid-July, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered a do-over. “We are going to go back to a clean slate and start from scratch,” he said.
Hadid did not respond to requests for comment. In a statement, Hadid’s firm said the “selection of a limited number of construction contractors” may have been contributed to a less-than-ideal “commercially competitive process” and, as a result, there was an “overly high estimate of the cost of the construction.”

A proposal for 4th Virtual Design World Cup for architecture students. Received Judge's Special Prize for Sustainable Design in Tokyo, November 2014.
Team :
Fajar Rezandi, James Nicol, Sabin Maguregui
Software used : Sketch Up & UC Win/Road
Our proposal focuses on aiding the existing connections for streamlined operation and efficiency, through designing new infrastructure at key transportation nodes. This will allow for simple and safe pedestrian movement around dense and fast paced vehicular routes. Proposing an integrated tram service throughout the Olympic site to provide a quicker alternative to walking that reduces traffic and pollution in the immediate area. Lowering the Menji Dori road that cuts through the Olympic site allows smooth connections between the venues on the new hard landscaped pedestrian routes.
The key transportation node we propose integrates tram and train stations on the lower part, and tower shaped buildings above it to accommodate commercial facilities, office space for Olympic delegations and media coverage offices, and accommodation for athletes and visitors. After the games, the new accommodation space could economically be converted for housing and facilities for residents. The towers will use seawater and ground source heat to cool and heat the buildings which in addition to heat recovery and double cladding systems aim to minimise their environmental impact.
This new infrastructure proposed will aid to deliver the desire ‘compact games’ concept for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by efficiently using transport lines and nodes and providing new facilities for the local users, but also will encourage further redevelopment of the city’s waterfront in the future.

Comiket Concerns Confirmed as Tokyo Big Sight Announces 2020 Olympic Plans
Majority of the convention center will be unavailable from April of 2019 onward
Crunchyroll previously reported about how the plans to host portions of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center were causing some concern among the organizers of large events such as Comiket and the Tokyo Motor Show, which traditionally host their activities at Tokyo Big Sight.
Now it seems those concerns were well-founded, because on October 22, 2015, the organizers of Tokyo Big Sight announced that some 60% of the entire convention center will be dedicated to hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics. Preparations for the games begin in April of 2019, and the space will be largely unavailable from then until the conclusion of the games in August of 2020.
Tokyo Big Sight is the largest convention center in Japan, with a total floor area of over 230,000 square meters (about 2,485,000 square feet), and it hosts some 300 events each year. The sheer size and scale of the venue means thats events are often planned at least 3 years in advance.
Organizers for Tokyo Big Sight have noted that they want the 2020 Summer Olympics to be a success, but they don't want to make things "too painful" for small and medium sized events.
Any way you slice it, though, Comiket is going to be affected. No official word has come down yet as to how exactly the world's largest dojinshi fair will change its plans to accomodate these developments.

Five additional sports -- baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing -- have been recommended by the organisers of the Tokyo Olympics for inclusion at the 2020 Summer Games, it was announced on Monday (September 28).
Under the proposal, a total of 18 new medal events, nine each for men and women, would be contested by an extra 474 athletes at the Games.
Under new rules, Olympic host cities can hand-pick sports they want to see contested at the Games, although the final decision rests with the International Olympic Committee, which will vote on the 2020 recommendations next August.
Bowling, squash and wushu had also been short-listed for inclusion in Tokyo but were left off the final recommended list.
As part of reforms initiated by IOC president Thomas Bach last year, future Olympic hosts are now being offered the chance to bring in sports popular in their countries to boost ratings and attract greater sponsorship.
Organisers wanted sports already popular with Japanese youth so new venues would not need to be built and add to ballooning costs.
Baseball and softball, united under the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), were previously on the Olympic programme but were dropped after Asia last hosted the Summer Games, in Beijing in 2008.
Karate has never been contested at the Olympics. Judo, another martial art founded in Japan, first joined in 1964, when Tokyo last hosted the Summer Games, and has been included on every programme since 1972.
Organisers recommended a total of eight medal events, two in kata and six in kumite. They also proposed two medals each for shortboard surfing and climbing, combining bouldering, lead and speed.

Olympic minister wants qualifiers in Fukushima
Japan Sep. 29, 2015 - Updated 09:11 UTC-4
Japan's minister in charge of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games has asked that the qualifiers for newly added sports for the 2020 Games be held in Fukushima Prefecture.
Toshiaki Endo made the request on Tuesday during a meeting with Yoshiro Mori, the head of the Tokyo organizing committee.
The move comes after the committee decided to propose the addition of 5 sports to the Games. They are baseball and softball, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, and surfing.
Endo told Mori that Fukushima was the region hardest hit by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and the ensuing nuclear accident.
He said the Fukushima governor has requested that the prefecture host some of the extra events, such as baseball and softball.
Endo said he believes a number of qualifiers will be held, and that they could be based in Fukushima. He added that if qualifiers can be held in other regional areas as well, the Olympics and Paralympics will be an event for all of Japan.
Mori indicated his intention to consider the request in a positive light.
Death threat against student protester
Japan Sep. 30, 2015 - Updated 05:53 UTC-4
A vocal critic of Japan's new security legislation is the target of a death threat.
Meiji Gakuin University student Aki Okuda is a key member of a group opposed to the laws that were enacted this month.
The university and other sources say another university received a letter addressed to Okuda on September 24th. It contained a threat to kill Okuda and his family members.
Okuda and other students launched the protest group called Students Emergency Action for Liberal Democracy also known as SEALDs in May this year.
SEALDs organized protests against the Japanese government's security legislation outside the Diet building. Okuda also appeared at a Diet hearing to share his views.
Okuda said he has filed a complaint with police. He tweeted he did not understand why his family has been threatened in addition to himself.
He said he would exercise caution because he did not want to be killed simply for expressing his opinion.
Meiji Gakuin University said in a statement that it regards the threat as an unforgivable act against freedom of speech. The university is taking measures to ensure the safety of its students, teachers and officials.
NRA criticizes Monju operator
Nuclear & Energy Sep. 30, 2015 - Updated 07:06 UTC-4
Japan's nuclear regulatory authority will question the chief of the organization operating the country's fast-breeder reactor, following discoveries of a range of safety problems.
In 2013, the Nuclear Regulation Authority ordered the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the operator of the Monju prototype fast-breeder reactor, to enforce a virtual ban on test-runs. The order came because a large number of safety oversights had been found.
Even after that, many safety issues have been discovered. A number of errors were found in the safety classifications of the equipment and devices at the reactor last month.
NRA officials reported at a meeting on Wednesday that they were unable to grasp the exact nature of the problems, due to the operator's poor handling of the data.
At the meeting, some NRA commissioners said nobody would trust the operator because there have been so many problems.
NRA Chairman Shunichi Tanaka called the situation very serious. He said the matter would cast doubt on whether the operator is qualified to run the reactor.
The authority has decided to ask the operator to submit a report on the latest problems by October 21st. They will also question the president of the operator Toshio Kodama about the management of his organization.
NRA Chairman Tanaka later suggested at a news conference that the ban on test-runs for the Monju fast-breeder reactor would remain.
The operator pledged to take seriously the regulator's request for a report and to continue to improve its procedures, putting the top priority on safety.

"Building Tokyo" is a fast-paced simulation of the construction of Tokyo, Japan on SimCity (2013). Played on regular mode.
The purpose of this series is to recreate a near replication of Tokyo, Japan on SimCity, one district/special ward at a time; obtaining accuracy by the road and rail infrastructure. Also, to stretch the limits of the SimCity game to acquire this.
This series features tips on travelling to Japan, Japanese culture and music, and personal footage that I've shot in Tokyo.

Zaha Hadid Architects welcomes a new bidding process for the New National Stadium in order to reduce costs and ensure value for money in terms of quality, durability and long-term sustainability. This video presentation and report outlines in detail the unique design for the New National Stadium which has been thoughtfully developed over two years to be the most compact and efficient stadium for this very special location in Tokyo.
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and our Japanese partners, the New National Stadium contains all the knowledge and expertise gained from the team’s direct experience of other Olympic, World Cup and World Championship stadia. The substantial investment in time, effort and resources already made by the Government and people of Japan into the existing team over the past two years ensures the New National Stadium can be completed in time to welcome the world to Japan in 2019 ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and become a new home for sport for many future generations of Japan’s athletes, sportsmen and women.
