The Ten-Day War, sometimes called the Slovenian War, was a brief military conflict between Slovenia and Yugoslavia that took place in 1991 following Slovenia's declaration of independence.
Slovenia and Croatia passed the acts about their independence on 25 June 1991. This "advance" on the date of independence was a critical element of the Slovenian plan to gain an early advantage in the expected conflict. The Slovenian government fully expected the Yugoslav military to respond with force on the day of the declaration of independence or shortly afterwards. By secretly advancing the date by 24 hours, the Slovenians wrongfooted the Yugoslav government, which had set 26 June as the date for its move.
Although the Yugoslav army was adamantly opposed to Slovenian independence, it was divided about what to do. The YPA Chief of Staff, Colonel-General Blagoje Adžić, advocated a large-scale military operation to remove the Slovenian government and bring "healthy forces" to power in the republic. His political superior, the Yugoslav Defence Minister General of the Army Veljko Kadijević, insisted on a more cautious approach – essentially a show of force that would convince the Slovenian government to back down on its declaration of independence. After some debate, Kadijević got his way.
It is unclear how much the civilian members of the Yugoslav government were involved in the decision to resort to force in Slovenia. Ante Marković, the President of the Federal Executive Council (equivalent to Prime Minister) is reported to have said that the federal government had not been informed of the Army's actions.
Due to the short duration and low intensity of the war, casualties were not high. According to Slovenian estimates, the YPA suffered 44 fatalities and 146 wounded, while the Slovenians had 18 killed and 182 wounded. Twelve foreign nationals were killed in the conflict, principally journalists and Bulgarian truck drivers who had strayed into the line of fire. 4,692 YPA soldiers and 252 federal police officers were captured by the Slovenian side. According to post-war assessments made by the YPA, its material losses amounted to 31 tanks, 22 armoured personnel carriers, 6 helicopters, 6,787 infantry weapons, 87 artillery pieces and 124 air defence weapons damaged, destroyed or confiscated. Property damage was not heavy, due to the scattered and short-term nature of the fighting.

US soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade fire support team doing a conjoint fire support exercise with the Slovenian army’s in Slovenia. On this video you can see a Slovenian Air Force Pilatus PC-9 (the propeller plane that doing strafing runs). Aero L-39 Albatros (the little jet plane on the video) and 2 M-84 ( Yugoslav copy of the t-72 )
Strafing, or strafing ground, is the act of a fighter to attack a ground target at low altitude with their machine guns , and by extension, small pumps .
The guns have to be mounted in a different way for strafing. The strafing requires a convergence point and far lower than air combat. Because of the low altitude required for strafing, it is very risky for the pilot, which is exposed to portable missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, antiaircraft artillery and machine guns. Aircraft designed for strafing may include additional armor around and under the cockpit to protect the pilot.
The Pilatus PC-9 aircraft is a Swiss manufactured propelled plane , developed from the PC-7 , which maintains the layout, but has very little structural equality with him. Among other improvements, the PC-9 features a larger cockpit with stepped ejection seats and a concept aerofreno ventral.
The Aero L-39 Albatros is a training jet aircraft manufactured in Czechoslovakia according to the requirements of the "C-39" (C d cvičný - trainer) during the late 1960s to replace the L-29 Delfin . It was the first of the second generation of jet aircraft training, and also the first coach to use motors turbofan , and was the last to be updated with the L-59 Super Albatros and L-139 .
The M-84 (based on the T-72 chassi) is a second-generation main battle tank, manufactured in the former Federation of Socialist Republics of Yugoslavia . The M-84 is in service today in Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia , Slovenia , Kuwait , Libya and Serbia

Later master Mussolini took back the very north east of Italia where some Slovenians still lived and told them to assimilate or leave. This was called "Italianisation". But you Slovenians want all of what you stole 1100 years ago? Well, go and ask the Austrians and Croats for that land you barely settled 1100 years ago, I'm sure they'll cooperate. Oh wait never mind.
The only way Slovenia is getting those lands is getting a better military. But with half-a-milliard euros in their military budget - compared to Italia's 20.67 milliard euros in theirs', Slovenia isn't going anywhere.

Vacation travel video about destination Izola in Slovenia.
Izola is an historic city on the Slovenian Adria coast. The idyllic old town and atmospheric, narrow streets date back to Roman times. However, from 1280 to 1797, Venice ruled the old fishing city and characterised its appearance. Thus the famous Venetian-inspired Palazzo Besenghi Degli Ughi was created, a Baroque palace built at the end of the eighteenth century. The Big Square at the old harbour is framed by several picturesque buildings. It was there that the colourful life of a harbour city took place under the rule of Venice. After the fall of the Serenissima followed the Habsburgs. In the new town with its beautiful buildings and small parks, a Mediterranean lifestyle is the order of the day and the time of being part of Military Zone B and Yugoslavia is now a thing of the past. Izola has blossomed once again and its long history has been preserved for future generations.

Travel video about destination Slovenia.
Half of Slovenia's colorful area is covered by forests, but the country also has another part, a tiny, but very nice coastal area on the Adriatic Sea, with such venetian style cities as Izola, Piran and Portoroz, as well as 2,800 meters high mountains and ski resorts.
The picturesque lakes Bled and Bohinj both lie in a wonderful landscape. The gem of the karstic area is the Postojna cave.
The tiny country has plenty of wild rivers suitable for rafting and healing waters. Golf, mountineering, diving, mountain biking and rock climbing are also warmly welcomed in Slovenia.
The Lippizan is well known all around the globe. All of this is completed by such medieval towns as Maribor, Skofja Loka and Ljubljana, and such romantic castles as the Predjama.

Vacation travel video about destination Bohinj Museum Railway in Slovenia.
Each summer, in Jesenice in the north of today’s EU Member State of Slovenia,an historical steam train travels through the Triglav National Park and both the Bača and Soča Valleys, to Nova Gorica. The first stop is Bled Jezero. Several actors are on the train, dressed as conductors in the uniforms of the old empire, a special touch that adds to the wonderful atmosphere. The train station is sited above a hollowed-out glacier that later became Bled Lake, one of the warmest lakes in the Alps. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy required a second railway connection between Vienna and Trieste. Its planning took more than thirty years and it took five years to construct: tunnels were blasted out of the rock, narrow valleys used to their best advantage, and amazing bridges constructed. With the completion of this railroad, the railway network connected Vienna and Central Europe with the Adriatic regions of the K and K monarchy. On this journey we have travelled on the youngest of the ‘steam ladies’ of the Ljubljana Railway Museum. The 33-037 weighs a hundred and thirty six tons, is twenty three metres long and its tender can take nine tons of coal. The Bohinj Museum Train is a fabulous experience. Not one to be missed!

Vacation travel video about destination Soca in Slovenia.
The Julian Alps are rugged karst mountains located on the sunny side of the Alps not far from the Mediterranean, and are one of the wildest, untouched regions in Slovenia. The Trenta Valley is the source of one of the most beautiful rivers in the Alps, the Soča in Slovenia, becoming the Isonzo in Italy - that flows from a mountain cave. In Trnovo the river flows into a narrow white-water gorge and large chunks of rock, the result of various earthquakes, lie on the riverbed. Many tributaries feed the Soča, along with the Tolminka River whose sixty metre deep gorge can be seen from the Devil's Bridge. On a trail through the gorge are a variety of plants and insects which Dr. Julius Kugy, a mountaineer and writer, once recorded in meticulous detail. It is believed that famous Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, once visited the Tolimka Canyons while staying in Tolmin and that the locality inspired his vision of the Underworld in his, Divina Comedia. The largest stone railway bridge in the world crosses the pristine Soča which finally becomes, in Italy, the Isonzo River, situated within a delta in the Adriatic Sea.

Vacation travel video about destination Skocjanske Jame in Slovenia.
In the heart of the Slovenian karst landscape of Kras, below the village of Škocjan, is one of the most important cave systems in the world, the Škocjan Caves, a world of caves into which the Reka River has dug deep into the limestone. Here, Nature has created a mysterious underground world, a labyrinth of caves, corridors and halls decorated with stalactites of various shapes and sizes. In an entire human lifetime these sculptures grow only a few millimetres, a comforting timelessness of primeval silence and beauty. In 1815, exploration of the cave system began and now six kilometres of paths, steps and bridges have been painstakingly created. The river created the caves. Emerging from the underworld, it crosses two collapsed dolines and disappears underground once more. The underground cave world of Škocjan is a unique testimony of the Earth’s history and in 1986 was designated as a World Heritage Site.

Vacation travel video about destination Postojnska in Slovenia.
Open to the public and set within a karstic landscape where the foothills of the Alps merge with the Pannonian Plain, is the largest and longest cave system in Slovenia, Postojnska Jama, a wonderland of nature that also features the longest underground cave train in the world. In 1818, Luka Čeč discovered the first sections and, to date, more than twenty kilometres of cave passages have been explored. Of these, around five kilometres have been designated for general group visits. The temperature in the cave system maintains a constant eight degrees Celsius and its paths and bridges are easy to negotiate. In the nineteenth century Postojnska Jama was known throughout Europe and America and was visited by travellers, scientists and various monarchs. When in 1857 the railway line between Vienna and Trieste saw the opening of the Postojna Railway Station, cave tourism was born. Postojnska Jama, a truly timeless destination!

Slovenia (Slovenija) is a member of the European Union, Schengen Agreement and NATO. The country lies in Central Europe in the eastern Alps at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea, bordered by Austria to the north, Italy to the west, Hungary to the northeast, and Croatia to the southeast. Despite its small size, this eastern Alpine country controls some of Europe's major transit routes.
Previously one of Yugoslavia's six constituent republics, present-day Slovenia became independent in 1991. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted in Slovenia's transformation to a modern state.

The new building of the National Museum of Slovenia on the (Metelkova, Maistrova Street 1), exhibits collections of the applied art heritage of Slovenia. The permanent exhibition brings together objects of applied arts from the 14th century to the present day.

She later emigrated to Argentina. Where she lived for the rest of her life.

Jane Austen created the definitive picture of Georgian England -- a landscape of Palladian mansions and handsome parsonages, peopled by rigidly-divided classes. No writer matches Austen's sensitive ear for the hypocrisy and irony lurking beneath the genteel conversation. Never has a novelist written comic prose with such subtlety and restraint. If you want to understand the early 19th century -- the power of money and inheritance, the clothes, the interior décor -- Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice are worth a dozen history books, and any number of second-rate novels by Austen's contemporaries.
That's the argument of the Janeites, but to the aficionados of Emily Brontë they are the misguided worshippers of a circumscribed mind. In Wuthering Heights, Brontë dispensed with Austen's niceties and the upper-middle class drawing rooms of Bath and the home counties. Her backdrop is the savage Yorkshire moors, her subject the all-consuming passions of the heart. The story of Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw is a full-blooded tale of violent attraction, thwarted love, death and the supernatural that makes Jane Austen look mundane -- and clutches at the reader's heart with a vigour and directness unmatched in English literature.
To help you decide who should be crowned queen of English letters we lined up the best advocates to make the case for each writer. The Death of Yugoslavia is a BBC documentary series first broadcast in 1995, and is also the name of a book written by Allan Little and Laura Silber that accompanies the series. It covers the collapse of the former Yugoslavia. It is notable in its combination of never-before-seen archive footage interspersed with interviews of most of the main players in the conflict, including Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadžić, Franjo Tuđman and Alija Izetbegović.
The series was awarded with a BAFTA award in 1996 for Best Factual Series. Because of the series large amount of interviews with prominent leaders and commanders of the conflict, it has been frequently used by ICTY in war crimes prosecutions.
All the papers relating to the documentary series, including full transcripts of the many valuable interviews conducted with participants, are lodged at the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College, University of London. The Death of Yugoslavia is a BBC documentary series first broadcast in 1995, and is also the name of a book written by Allan Little and Laura Silber that ...

The Yugoslav Wars were ethnic conflicts fought from 1991 to 1999 on the territory of former Yugoslavia. The wars accompanied the breakup of the country, where its constituent republics declared independence, but the issues of ethnic minorities in the new countries (chiefly Serbs in central parts and Albanians in the southeast) were left unresolved after those republics were recognized internationally. The wars are generally considered to be a series of largely separate but related military conflicts occurring and affecting most of the former Yugoslav republics:
War in Slovenia (1991)
Croatian War of Independence (1991--1995)
Bosnian War (1992--1995)
Kosovo War (1998--1999), including the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia
The wars mostly resulted in peace accords, involving full international recognition of new states, but with massive economic damage in the region.
Initially the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) sought to preserve the unity of the whole of Yugoslavia by crushing the secessionist governments; however the JNA increasingly came under the influence of the Serbian government of Slobodan Milošević that evoked Serbian nationalist rhetoric and was willing to support the Yugoslav state insofar as using it to preserve the unity of Serbs in one state; as a result the JNA began to lose Slovenes, Croats, Kosovar Albanians, Bosniaks, and ethnic Macedonians, and effectively became a Serb army. According to the 1994 United Nations report, the Serb side did not aim to restore Yugoslavia, but to create a "Greater Serbia" from parts of Croatia and Bosnia.
Often described as Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II, the conflicts have become infamous for the war crimes involved, including ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity and rape. These were the first conflicts since World War II to be formally judged genocidal in character and many key individual participants were subsequently charged with war crimes. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established by the UN to prosecute these crimes.
According to the International Center for Transitional Justice, the Yugoslav Wars resulted in the deaths of 140,000 people. The Humanitarian Law Center writes that in the conflicts in former Yugoslav republics at least 130,000 people lost their lives.

Yugoslavia (Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian, Slovene: Jugoslavija, Југославија) was a country in Southeast Europe during most of the 20th century. It came into existence after World War I in 1918[ii] under the name of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes by the merger of the provisional State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs (itself formed from territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire) with the formerly independent Kingdom of Serbia and Kingdom of Montenegro. The Serbian royal House of Karađorđević became the Yugoslav royal dynasty. Yugoslavia gained international recognition on 13 July 1922 at the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris.[3] The country was named after the South Slavic peoples and constituted their first union, following centuries in which the territories had been part of the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary.
Renamed Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 3 October 1929, it was invaded by the Axis powers on 6 April 1941. In 1943, a Democratic Federal Yugoslavia was proclaimed by the Partisan resistance. In 1944, the king recognised it as the legitimate government, but in November 1945 the monarchy was abolished. Yugoslavia was renamed the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia in 1946, when a communist government was established. It acquired the territories of Istria, Rijeka, and Zadar from Italy. Leader of the Partisans Josip Broz Tito ruled the country as the president until his death in 1980. In 1963, the country was renamed again to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY).
The constituent six Socialist Republics and two Socialist Autonomous Provinces that made up the country were SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, SR Croatia, SR Macedonia, SR Montenegro, SR Slovenia, and SR Serbia (including the autonomous provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo, which after 1974 were largely equal to the other members of the federation).[4][5] After an economic and political crisis in the 1980s and the rise of nationalism, Yugoslavia broke up along its republics' borders, at first into five countries, leading to the Yugoslav Wars.
After the breakup, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro formed a reduced federation, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), which aspired to the status of sole legal successor to the SFRY, but those claims were opposed by the other former republics. Eventually, Serbia and Montenegro accepted the opinion of the Badinter Arbitration Committee about shared succession.[6] Serbia and Montenegro themselves broke up in 2006 and became independent states, while Kosovo proclaimed independence in 2008.
