The first Alenia Aermacchi C-27J Spartan for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) touched down at RAAF Base Townsville on 24 June 2015, before travelling onwards to its new home of RAAF Base Richmond on 25 June 2015.
An acceptance ceremony was then held at RAAF Base Richmond on 30 June 2015 for the first of ten C-27J Spartan battlefield airlifters to enter service with the Royal Australian Air Force. The aircraft, operated by No. 35 Squadron, will fulfill an airlift role between the Army rotary-wing fleet and Air Force's larger airlift transport aircraft. RAAF C-27J Spartans will provide airlift to Defence Operations in warlike environments, as well as support Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief missions, being able to deliver payloads and personnel to airfields that are unsuitable for larger aircraft. The C-27J Spartan is the world’s most successful new generation tactical airlifter, with 76 aircraft already sold to 10 countries in five continents.
The C-27J offers high operational effectiveness together with competitive costs, extreme flexibility, the best performance in its category in all conditions and unique interoperability with larger airlifters.
The Spartan is a twin-turboprop tactical airlifter with state of the art technologies in avionics, propulsion system and other on-board systems.
Thanks to its very versatile design, the C-27J is ideal for roles including troop and materials transport, medical evacuation, paratroop and materials airdrops, Search And Rescue (SAR), logistic supply, humanitarian support, firefighting and civil emergency operations support. Purpose-designed kits also allow VIP transport and other missions.
The C-27J has a large cargo box, capable of supporting almost 5 tons per square meter. The aircraft can carry pallets or platforms weighing up to 4,550-6,000 kilos, or 60 equipped soldiers, 46 fully equipped paratroops, 36 stretchers or other combinations up to 30,500 kilos maximum takeoff weight.
The aircraft can operate from airstrips under 500 meters.
The two AE2100-D2/D2A engines are rated at 4,650 SHP. To increase safety and reliability, the avionics architecture is fully redundant and guarantees excellent performance and low pilot workload in whatever environmental condition and all operational theaters. Optional systems include air-to-air refueling, self-protection and head-up displays.
The latest C-27J customer is Peru, which ordered four aircraft. Other customers are Australia, which in 2015 will receive the first of its 10 aircrafts, the United States (21, including 14 used by the Coast Guard and 7 for the Army Special Operations Command), Italy (12), Greece (8), Romania (7), Morocco (4), Mexico (4), Bulgaria (3), Lithuania (3) and a sub-Saharan African country. Italy, Romania, USA and Peru also purchased C-27J aircrew training flight simulators from Alenia Aermacchi.

A Spartan is a person from the Greek city Sparta or the ancient Greek city-state of the same name. In the latter context, the term "Spartan" in its most technical sense refers to a member of the Spartiate caste and under some usages also encompasses the class of mothakes, residents of Sparta who were free but did not enjoy full political rights.

Instructors from the RAAF School of Administration and Logistics Training (RAAFSALT) have taken students through the first C-27J Spartan Air Movements Course at RAAF Base Richmond. The course is intended to provide students with the necessary training to conduct ground loading related functions of the C-27J. In RAAF service, the C-27J will be loaded with cargo and personnel from larger airfields. The aircraft will then fly these loads to airfields which cannot physically support larger transport aircraft. Internally, the C-27J can accommodate up to three military pallets containing cargo. The C-27J has a large cargo box, capable of supporting almost 5 tons per square meter. The aircraft can carry pallets or platforms weighing up to 4,550-6,000 kilos, or 60 equipped soldiers, 46 fully equipped paratroops, 36 stretchers or other combinations up to 30,500 kilos maximum takeoff weight.
The aircraft can operate from airstrips under 500 meters.
The two AE2100-D2/D2A engines are rated at 4,650 SHP. To increase safety and reliability, the avionics architecture is fully redundant and guarantees excellent performance and low pilot workload in whatever environmental condition and all operational theaters. Optional systems include air-to-air refueling, self-protection and head-up displays.
The latest C-27J customer is Peru, which ordered four aircraft. Other customers are Australia, which in 2015 will receive the first of its 10 aircrafts, the United States (21, including 14 used by the Coast Guard and 7 for the Army Special Operations Command), Italy (12), Greece (8), Romania (7), Morocco (4), Mexico (4), Bulgaria (3), Lithuania (3) and a sub-Saharan African country. Instructors from the RAAF School of Administration and Logistics Training (RAAFSALT) have taken students through the first C-27J Spartan Air Movements Course at RAAF Base Richmond.

(Lima 03 Nov. 2015) Según ha revelado el Director Ejecutivo del grupo Finmeccanica, Mauro Moretti, en una reciente rueda de prensa, la empresa Alenia Aermacchi está en conversaciones con Perú para la venta de ocho aviones de transporte C-27J Spartan que se sumarían a los cuatro comprados por dicho país.
Inicialmente se firmó, en 2013, la entrega de dos de estos aviones por 121,9 millones de dólares para reemplazar a los veteranos Antonov An-32 de a Fuerza Aérea del Perú, cuya entrega se concluyó en junio de este año. En 2014 se anunció la ampliación de otros dos aviones por un importe de 119,4 millones cuyas entregas tendrán lugar entre 2016 y 2017.
El Alenia-Aermacchi C-27J Spartan es un avión tàctico de transporte medio que tiene una longitud de 22,7 m, envergadura de 28,7 m. y altura de 9,64 m. Está propulsado por dos motores Rolls-Royce AE2100-D2A de 4.460 hp. con los que alcanza una velocidad de crucero de 580 km/h. Su techo de servicio es de 9.100 m. y el alcance es de 5.920 km, siendo capaz de transportar 6 toneladas de carga a 4.000 km., siendo su potencia, maniobrabilidad y versatilidad factores determinantes para su elecciòn por parte de la Fuerza Aerea y el Gobierno de Perù considerando la dificil geografìa de esa naciòn sudamericana.

The C-27J is currently being introduced to Air Force service by No. 35 Squadron, who is currently operating two C-27J Spartans in a mix of test and evaluation tasks as well as training flights. Missions like the passenger task to RAAF Base Edinburgh will ultimately inform Air Force of the best means to utilise the Spartan on airlift missions in the future.
Air Force will eventually operate a fleet of ten C-27J spartans in the battlefield airlift role, bridging the gap between Army rotary-wing airlift and larger Air Force transports.

The maiden flight of the C-27J Spartan took place on the 24th of September 1999 and it went into service on October 2006 in Italy. Primary users are Italian Air Force, United States Coast Guard and the Hellenic Air Force. The C-27J Spartan is still active in service. Cost per unit is approx. 53.3 million USD in 2012.

The maiden flight of the C-27J Spartan took place on the 24th of September 1999 and it went into service on October 2006 in Italy. Primary users are Italian Air Force, United States Coast Guard and the Hellenic Air Force. The C-27J Spartan is still active in service. Cost per unit is approx. 53.3 million USD in 2012.
