Rotterdam (
/ˈrɒtərdæm/; Dutch [ˌrɔ.tər.ˈdɑm] (
listen)) is the second-largest city in the Netherlands and one of the largest ports in the world. Starting as a dam constructed in 1270 on the Rotte River, Rotterdam has grown into a major international commercial centre. Its strategic location at the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta on the North Sea and at the heart of a massive rail, road, air and inland waterway distribution system extending throughout Europe is the reason that Rotterdam is often called the "Gateway to Europe".
Located in the Province of South Holland, Rotterdam is found in the west of the Netherlands and at the south end of the Randstad. The population of the city proper was 616,250 on February 1st 2012. The population of the greater Rotterdam area, called "Rotterdam-Rijnmond" or just "Rijnmond", is around 1.3 million people. Rotterdam is one of Europe's most vibrant, multicultural cities. The city is known for its university (Erasmus), its cutting-edge architecture, its lively cultural life, its striking riverside setting, its maritime heritage and the Rotterdam Blitz.

Rotterdam may crown itself as the best European city of 2015. The award was given by the international Academy of Urbanism from London. As a Rotterdam resident I couldn’t be more proud! Rotterdam may crown itself as the best European city of 2015. The award was given by the international Academy of Urbanism from London. As a Rotterdam resident I couldn’t be more proud! I decided to shoot a dedicated aerial video and show you the best highlights Rotterdam has to offer.

Donderdagavond zijn omwonenden in de Beverwaard op de hoogte gesteld over het toekomstig asielzoekerscentrum wat moet gaan verrijzen. Begin 2016 zal er gebouwd gaan worden. Voor de duur van vijf jaar zullen 600 vluchtelingen uit Syrië en Eritrea onderdak krijgen. Buurtbewoners die vanavond aanwezig zijn tijdens de informatieavond lieten nogal van zich horen. Burgemeester Aboutaleb werd onderbroken in zijn toespraak door aanwezigen met leuzen als "AZC weg ermee". De burgervader liet de bijeenkomst kort opschorten.
De tent die onderdak moet bieden aan de belangstellenden bleek te klein voor het aantal mensen dat deze avond wilden bijwonen. Uit brandveiligheidsoverwegingen werd het hek voor de tent op slot gedraaid. Tientallen mensen konden hierdoor niet meer naar binnen en liepen de emoties zo nu en dan hoog op. Toen mevrouw Helder namens het COA het woord voerde liet ze de aanwezigen weten dat als de situatie weer veilig is in hun land, de mensen weer terug moeten keren. Ook zullen de asielzoekers worden gecontroleerd op tbc.
Aanwezigen in de tent spraken hun ongerustheid uit over de toenemende criminaliteit die men verwacht met de komst van het centrum, korpschef Paauw liet weten de omwonenden niet in de steek te laten. Kort na 21:00 uur was de bijeenkomst afgelopen op het voormalige sportterrein.
Inzet mobiele eenheid
De mobiele eenheid welke ondersteuning biedt, werd uitgescholden voor "homo's" door de mensen buiten de tent. Er moest een aantal keer opgetreden worden door de mobiele eenheid om de openbare orde te herstellen. Een groep mensen die het terrein verliet verplaatste zich naar de kruising van de Groeninx van Zoelenplein en werd daar opgevangen door de politie. De mobiele eenheid werd bekogeld met stenen en voerde hierop een charge uit. Ook een paardentrailer van de politie werd aangevallen en een ruit van een dienstvoertuig moest het ontgelden. De groep relschoppers vertrok de wijk in en ontstak daar zwaar vuurwerk.
Aanhoudingen en camerabeelden
Omstreeks 22:00 uur bleek de rust te zijn teruggekeerd in Beverwaard. De politie liet weten dat er voorlopig drie aanhoudingen verricht zijn, wellicht loopt dit nog op na het bekijken van camerabeelden welke zijn gemaakt door de politie.

The Market Hall is a residential- and office building with a market hall underneath, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars. The inside of the building is painted with a 11.000 m2 artwork of Arno Coenen, named 'Hoorn des Overvloeds'. The artwork shows strongly enlarged fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects.
The Erasmus Bridge is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. The southernmost span of the bridge has an 89-metre-long (292 ft) bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in Western Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.
Cube houses are a set of 40 innovative houses built in Rotterdam, designed by architect Piet Blom. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a "show cube", which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of it. The houses contain three floors. The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the apartment is around 100 square meters, but around a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings.

Die größte Modelleisenbahn in Holland gibt es seit dem 30. März 2007 in Rotterdam. Anfangs hieß die Schauanlage noch Railz Miniworld, wurde aber am 27. April 2012 in Miniworld Rotterdam umbenannt; der holländische Name lautet Miniatuurwereld van Nederland. Die gesamte Modellbahn in Spur H0 umfaßt derzeit eine Fläche von knapp 600 Quadratmetern und repräsentiert die Niederlande mit ihren Küsten und Polderlandschaften, Eisenbahnstrecken, Windmühlen, Hafenanlagen, etc. rund um die Stadt Rotterdam.
Beispielsweise werden die Städte Zeshuizen, Sluishoek, Leckenzijl und Marendam gezeigt. Kern der gesamten Modelleisenbahnausstellung ist der Hafen von Rotterdam mit Containerschiffen, Terminal, Trockendock und Industrieanlagen. Abgesehen davon werden die kleinen Vororte von Rotterdam gezeigt, wozu Hooghburgt, Schiedam, Vlaardingen, Capelle aan den IJssel, Hoogvliet und Spijkenisse gehören. Enorm viel Platz ist auch dem Nachbau der Innenstadt von Rotterdam gewidmet, denn nicht nur Hochhäuser, die Nieuwe Maas und die berühmte Erasmus-Brücke, sondern auch sämtliche öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel sowie selbstverständlich auch der große Hauptbahnhof Rotterdam Centraal Station sind im Detail nachgebaut worden. Ferner wurden Gebäude und Szenerien des Maasboulevard, von Kop van Zuid oder von Delfshaven nachgebaut.
Die Miniworld Rotterdam ist in Holland ein absoluter Publikumsmagnet, da es auf jedem neuen Quadratzentimeter etwas zu entdecken oder zu bewundern gibt. Mit derzeit 2,3 km Gleislänge bei 600 m² Ausstellungsfläche gerät der Eisenbahnverkehr manchmal in den Hintergrund, wird aber durch imposante Bauwerke wunderschön substituiert. Zu denken ist an das große Kreuzfahrtschiff, das mit knapp vier Metern Länge im Hafen vor Anker liegt, oder die Werft, die im Modell knapp drei Meter lang ist. Auch haben die holländischen Modellbauer eine Tag- und Nachtschaltung installiert, die ungefähr alle 25 Minuten aktiviert wird. Rotterdam, Holland - Day 2 of this fest starts with another call from Keith. We hit the local hash bar for a space cake breakfast. Hard to believe tonight is the last show of this tour, it's been great fun. Hung out with Nick Cave, a really nice gentleman who bought me a beer. Thurston introduced us, and mentioned "Desperate Teenage Lovedolls", and Mr. Cave said it sounded great. The festival is held in a big indoor multi-hall convention center-type place, with many bands playing simultaneously. Nirvana we're getting really tanked-up backstage, and Chris tells me Kurt is flying on mushrooms. I film Kim doing the band's make up. Courtney Love enters the room, with Billy Corgan {Smashing Pumpkins were playing too} and introduces him to everyone. I think everyone was vastly underwhelmed. After they leave, Kurt scrawls on the wall in magic marker; "Courtney + Gish" and smiled incessantly. Nirvana go on and just about drive me to tears. They were fucking up too, but fucking up gloriously. I film most of the set, loading the cartridges non-stop. I was even calling out songs from stage right. "Hey Kurt, play In Bloom!" {They haven't played that song on this tour 'til tonight.} At the end, Kurt goes into distructo mode, and won't stop, until he is accosted by bouncers. Alex soon puts a stop to it.

"I think the Nirvana set from this festival is a raw and nice performance, just before the mainstream and thus the beggining of the end..."
"At the festival Nirvana weren't allowed to play on the main stage. The Smashing Pumkins were. Nirvana got (childishsly) mad and destroyed the complete backline (which was not theirs but the PA Rental Service's ) When they tried to demolish the huge sound stacks on the front of house, they were taken off the stage. Needless to say they didn't get paid !
A journalist who spoke with Nirvana that day said:
"I mainly spoke with Cobain, the other two went to the Doelen to check it out. On their return they were moaning about the small hall they would have to play, while a band like the Smashing Pumpkins was on the main stage. This arose a wayward atmosphere."
It really did, Nirvana completely trashed the stage.
The show ends in chaos. In the book Come As You Are Michael Azzerad described the situation as following: For the last show of the tour, in Rotterdam, the group got drunk. Near the end of the show Krist climbed on the PA tower with his trouser on his ankles and a bottle in his hand. Security runs on stage and pulls him down, while Kurt was smashing up everything around him. One of the security guys lashes out to Krist, which started a dispute. Krist got removed from the hall, but came back and started fighting the promoter.
Willem Venema, that same promoter, tells another story. I was warned before the show by my stage manager that they would start throwing with their amps and drum kit. They did that every night, part of the show. I told their tour manager that I would intervene when they would take our stuff, PA and microphones, for the simple reason that there was another band after them. At the end of the show Krist gets up the PA and made a start throwing the speakers down the stage.I walked up to him and pulled him off the PA by his belt. On which Kurt started to interfere , telling me not to touch his buddy. They acted like they were very drunk.

Rotterdam, Holland - Day 2 of this fest starts with another call from Keith. We hit the local hash bar for a space cake breakfast. Hard to believe tonight is the last show of this tour, it's been great fun. Hung out with Nick Cave, a really nice gentleman who bought me a beer. Thurston introduced us, and mentioned "Desperate Teenage Lovedolls", and Mr. Cave said it sounded great. The festival is held in a big indoor multi-hall convention center-type place, with many bands playing simultaneously. Nirvana we're getting really tanked-up backstage, and Chris tells me Kurt is flying on mushrooms. I film Kim doing the band's make up. Courtney Love enters the room, with Billy Corgan {Smashing Pumpkins were playing too} and introduces him to everyone. I think everyone was vastly underwhelmed. After they leave, Kurt scrawls on the wall in magic marker; "Courtney + Gish" and smiled incessantly. Nirvana go on and just about drive me to tears. They were fucking up too, but fucking up gloriously. I film most of the set, loading the cartridges non-stop. I was even calling out songs from stage right. "Hey Kurt, play In Bloom!" {They haven't played that song on this tour 'til tonight.} At the end, Kurt goes into distructo mode, and won't stop, until he is accosted by bouncers. Alex soon puts a stop to it.

"At the festival Nirvana weren't allowed to play on the main stage. The Smashing Pumkins were. Nirvana got (childishsly) mad and destroyed the complete backline (which was not theirs but the PA Rental Service's ) When they tried to demolish the huge sound stacks on the front of house, they were taken off the stage. Needless to say they didn't get paid !
A journalist who spoke with Nirvana that day said:
"I mainly spoke with Cobain, the other two went to the Doelen to check it out. On their return they were moaning about the small hall they would have to play, while a band like the Smashing Pumpkins was on the main stage. This arose a wayward atmosphere."
It really did, Nirvana completely trashed the stage.
The show ends in chaos. In the book Come As You Are Michael Azzerad described the situation as following: For the last show of the tour, in Rotterdam, the group got drunk. Near the end of the show Krist climbed on the PA tower with his trouser on his ankles and a bottle in his hand. Security runs on stage and pulls him down, while Kurt was smashing up everything around him. One of the security guys lashes out to Krist, which started a dispute. Krist got removed from the hall, but came back and started fighting the promoter.
Willem Venema, that same promoter, tells another story. I was warned before the show by my stage manager that they would start throwing with their amps and drum kit. They did that every night, part of the show. I told their tour manager that I would intervene when they would take our stuff, PA and microphones, for the simple reason that there was another band after them. At the end of the show Krist gets up the PA and made a start throwing the speakers down the stage.I walked up to him and pulled him off the PA by his belt. On which Kurt started to interfere , telling me not to touch his buddy. They acted like they were very drunk.
