8. SOUNDBITE: (German) Marianne Birthler, Federal Commissioner for the
Files of the State Security Service of the Former German Democratic Republic:
"
Looking at the interest in the files, that people are still coming and want to see their files, there is an unwaning interest. It is also receiving a broad interest, it doesn't just regard closely connected victims, who were imprisoned and disintegrated, but also others who were tapped, spied out and watched, maybe even over many years, want to know 'How did the "Stasi" try to interfere with my life'."

Berlin Hohenschoenhausen memorial site:
"It is important to describe the techniques of the "Staatssicherheit" (German for "
State Security"; "Stasi"), which tried here to criminalise people who were no criminals, giving them long prison sentences for the only reason that they were opponents of the state. This has to be told to the next generation."

20. SOUNDBITE (German) Dr.
Hubertus Knabe, director of Berlin Hohenschoenhausen memorial site:
"Particularly the former inmates are very dissatisfied about what happened after the fall of the (
Berlin) Wall. The perpetrators have, as a rule, not been punished, the former director of the prison is living a few blocks away, his staff live here in the area. The victims were very insufficiently compensated, and the party responsible for the whole thing today sits in parliament under a different name. This is not a good outcome."
