STORYLINE
About 150 French troops and dozens of military vehicles left Beirut on Tuesday for south Lebanon, launching a week long deployment to reinforce the UN peacekeeping mission.
About nine hundred French soldiers had gathered at a temporary camp in Beirut awaiting orders to move south to a base in Deir Kifa, east of the port of Tyre.
A French military spokesperson said the first military detachment left on Tuesday and added that more troops would arrive over the next week.
The convoy included 13 armoured personnel carriers, four Leclerc tanks and several dozen trucks and jeeps, all painted in the white UN colour.
France is contributing the second-largest contingent of 2,000 soldiers and will command the UN force until early next year, when Italy is to take over.
Under the cease-fire resolution that ended the 34-day conflict, a 15-thousand-strong UN force is to deploy in the south to maintain the cessation of hostilities and purportedly assist the Lebanese army in re-establishing control over Hezbollah''s southern stronghold.
A spokesperson for the UN in Lebanon, Alexandro Izanko said he had been told by the Israeli government that they would remove their forces from Lebanon.
"We are raising it on a daily basis. Regarding the withdrawal of IDF there are still areas under the control of Israeli Defence Forces just to the north of the blue line in some areas it's a couple of hundred metres wide in some areas its two or three kilometres."

STORYLINE
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited the headquarters of UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at Naqoura on Saturday, the second of his three-day visit to the country.
Ban inspected UNIFIL troops at the base in southern Lebanon and laid a floral wreath on a memorial to soldiers killed in action.
Speaking at the base Ban again called on Lebanon and neighbouring Israel to resolve their differences.
"Building confidence between the Lebanese armed forces and Israeli Defence Forces and that is creating space in which the parties can seek a long term solution to the conflict," he said.
During the visit Ban met General Force Commander of the UNIFIL, Major General Alberto Asarta Cuevas, and also presented medals to various soldiers.

"My feeling is that the figure that was put forward at the beginning of discussions, which was 15-thousand for a reinforced UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), was a figure that was quite excessive, because if I can be honest I can't imagine that in a territory which is half of the size of a French province we could have 15-thousand Lebanese troops deployed and 15-thousand UNIFIL soldiers deployed. There is a big chance they would be bumping into each other."

I think that it's very important for the UNIFIL mission to be successful so that we can have peace in the region, so that we can work to develop a sovereign, strong Lebanese state that is decisive. We want Iran to make it clear to us and accept our proposal and we will use all means and contacts and the UN Secretary General is going to visit Iran and will once again stress the importance of the (UN) resolution and the necessity that Iran has a chance, the chance to develop its economy which is vital for the Iranian people and accept the offer of the international community and not disregard our proposal."

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel met French President Jacques Chirac for talks in Paris on Friday, the 62nd anniversary of the liberation of Paris after World War Two.
Chirac commented on Lebanon's peacekeeping force saying he does not believe the strengthened UN force needs 15,000 troops, calling that figure excessive.
A UN resolution calls for the force in southern Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, to expand from 2-thousand troops to up to 15-thousand. Chirac said the territory in question was too small to require that many peacekeepers.
"My feeling is that the figure that was put forward at the beginning of discussions - 15-thousand for a reinforced UNIFIL - was a figure that was quite excessive," he told reporters during a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
On Thursday, Chirac announced that France would contribute a total of 2-thousand troops to the force.
He had initially offered just 200 more troops, in addition to the 200 French peacekeepers already part of the force - far short of the United Nations' expectations for a country with historical ties to Lebanon.
European Union foreign ministers were to meet Friday in Brussels to discuss troop contributions, and France's troop announcement was likely to spur other countries to send additional peacekeepers.
Chirac's comments suggested that France would press to keep the force smaller than originally expected.

STORYLINE:
More French trucks and armoured vehicles rolled ashore in Lebanon on Wednesday to add to the multi-national mission aimed at helping cement the UN-brokered truce which ended fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
French troops wearing the distinctive blue helmets and berets of the United Nations unloaded the cargo ship 'Fast Challenger' which docked at Beirut's port.
The port reopened to commercial traffic last Friday (8 September) after Israel imposed a blockade after fighting broke out on July 12.
The latest deployment consists of Leclerc tanks, AUF-1 artillery cannons, high-tech Cobra radar trucks, and dozens of armoured vehicles and transport trucks.
France has promised to send 2,000 soldiers as part of the international peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon. Some 500 troops have so far been deployed.
The French contingent is part of efforts to give new teeth to the so-called UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) peacekeeping mission, which has been largely ineffective since it was created in south Lebanon in 1978.
The force is set to grow from 2,000 troops to 15,000 under a new Security Council mandate.
France has long-standing ties to Lebanon, which was under French administration between the two world wars.
Russia has also said it will send troops to Lebanon.
A Russian military plane arrived in Beirut on Wednesday carrying 31 members of the Russian contingent with a second aircraft bringing equipment.
Russia's Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov has said that a battalion of between 350-400 engineers and explosives specialists will head to Lebanon in late September or early October, Interfax, ITAR-Tass and RIA-Novosti reported.
The contingent was not being deployed to Lebanon as part of the UN peacekeeping group, but on the basis of bilateral agreements between the Russian and Lebanese governments, according to RIA-Novosti.
Russian President Vladimir Putin gave final orders on Monday for a battalion to travel to Lebanon.
Ivanov has said that the battalion would include experts for disarming unexploded ordnance, as well as engineers to evaluate the damage inflicted on Lebanese roads and bridges.
"First of all we are going to look at the suggestions put forward by the Lebanese government. We will consider their request and our ability - you have to understand are abilities are not limitless. After agreeing on these matters we will make the decision about which bridges we will rebuild," said one Russian officer.

STORYLINE:
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan visited UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, a day after Italy and Turkey moved to join the international force there.
Annan and his entourage left Beirut on Tuesday morning in US helicopters, and landed in Naqoura, a town on the Mediterranean coast about four kilometres (2.5 miles) north of the Israeli border.
Naqoura is home to the headquarters of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) which has been based in southern Lebanon since 1978.
UNIFIL was originally tasked with monitoring Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon and helping the Lebanese government restore its authority along the border.
Their long time presence in Lebanon and their inability to secure peace along the border with Israel has led many Lebanese to place little hope in the latest peacekeeping mission.
"As long as the UN and namely the security council are hostage to the US, everything will still be the same. We hope it doesn't get worse at the UN," one man said.
After a briefing by UNIFIL commander French Major General Alain Pellegrini, Annan reviewed an honour guard of UN troops in blue berets standing at attention on the green lawn inside the UN's white-walled compound.
A military band played alongside them.
Annan then laid a wreath at a monument for peacekeepers killed in Lebanon since UNIFIL were deployed in 1978.
Muslim and Christian clergymen said prayers, and the UN chief stood in silence in front of a display of portraits of those killed, including four UNIFIL members killed in an Israeli airstrike on their base in Khiam on July 25.

Israel launched new attacks on Lebanon's southern area on Thursday.
The southern Lebanese town of Marjayoun was shelled, causing little visible damage. The Christian town is close to Khyam.
AP Television footage showed a seemingly deserted town with empty streets and closed up shops.
UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) vehicles were driving through the streets of the town.
Earlier on Thursday UNIFIL was evacuating family of UN staff and dozens of Europeans from Lebanon's southern port city of Tyre.
In the southern Lebanese Bekaa Valley, shelling hit several bridges on Wednesday night near Rayak port.
Power lines in the region were also hit, and repairs were already taking place on Thursday.
No injuries were immediately reported in either incident.
The south and eastern Bekaa Valley is considered as Hezbollah's heartland and the Israeli army has launched numerous attacks on the region.

"Let''s be very clear what we''re describing. We''re describing people who find themselves caught up in the situation and who in a sense need to come back to their communities and need to feel part of those communities again. We''re very clear on what we mean and we''re looking to the Afghan government to determine how that should go forward and I think that''s an important element of what we''re discussing, but one element of a much broader, consensual approach, a lot of agreement in the room, about what we should do."

STORYLINE
Major world powers opened talks on Thursday seeking an end to the grinding conflict in Afghanistan, drafting plans to hand over security responsibilities to local forces and quell the insurgency with an offer of jobs and housing to lure Taliban fighters to renounce violence.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai greeted delegates from about 70 nations and institutions in London, seeking to win new international support after more than eight years of combat which is threatening to exhaust public support in the West.
Karzai on Thursday also personally thanked injured British veterans of the Afghan campaign during a visit to Wellington Barracks in central London.
