Bavaria is the largest German territory. Its typical atmosphere is given by little towns and villages. Wooden shells, high red tiled roofs with many little skylights, old signboards, town walls, ancient churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, huge green areas and many flowers take us to a wonderfully calm and merry world. In 1868, Bavarian King Ludwig The Second had a dream come true in Allgäu, southern Germany: Castle Neuschwanstein, the realisation of his amazing world of fantasy situated close to Castle Hoch-Schwangau where as a child the king had immersed himself in German mythology. The fairytale castle was seventeen years in construction and in every way the idyll of ancient German knighthood, a union of both castle and its surroundings. The dining room is full of paintings that depict scenes from Wartburg at the time of the legendary Singer War. The centre of the room is dominated by a massive table top made of gilded bronze, Siegfried and his fight with the dragon, good against evil. The Throne Hall is a most magnificent and impressive room, two storeys high with lateral rows of columns and a gilded apse which is reminiscent of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The monumental Singer Hall is the castle’s largest and most important room. It was built for the operas of Richard Wagner. The tall, wooden coffered ceiling features numerous images as well as the signs of the zodiac. The ballroom of the Wartburg is full of motifs of Parzival, Lohengrin and King Arthur and his Round Table. The castle absorbed vast amounts of money and created massive royal debts that finally resulted in tragedy. During the night of June 12th, 1886, Ludwig The Second was arrested, declared deposed and taken to Castleberg. Barely forty eight hours later he died at the age of forty under mysterious circumstances in Lake Starnberg. A royal legacy, Castle Neuschwanstein is now one of the world’s most famous buildings.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds.
The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer. The palace has appeared prominently in several movies and was the inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle and later, similar structures.

If you get a sense that Neuschwanstein castle looks rather familiar, you aren't mistaken. The Neuschwanstein Castle, also referred to as Schloss Neuschwanstein, in Bavaria, Germany, has a more recent cultural reference than its history that is rooted in the 19th century. Neuschwanstein Castle was the main inspiration behind the design of the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park in California, and its visage has been made iconic by the Walt Disney Pictures logo. The construction of Neuschwanstein Castle, meaning ‘New Swan Stone’ in German, started in 1869 and was stopped unfinished in 1892.

Beside the well known Octoberfest holder Munich and the medieval older town look keeper Nuremberg, Regensburg and Augsburg there are castles like the romantic Neuschwanstein that are waiting for the traveller. There are glittering lakes in the green pinewood like the Königssee and the Chiemsee, and mountaintops like the snow-capped Zugspitze. Though Bavaria is only one territory within the German territories everyone can feel it is quite different from the others. It is richer, friendlier and its atmosphere is more delightful than the country’s other territories.

Neuschwanstein Castle (German: Schloss Neuschwanstein, pronounced [nɔʏˈʃvaːnʃtaɪn], English: "New Swanstone Castle") is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany.

Neuschwanstein Castle, near the town of Fussen Germany was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria. He grew up in nearby
Hohenschwangau Castle that had been built by his father King Maximilian II of Bavaria. (please see my complete detailed You Tube video upload I did for that castle also)
By now Ludwig was known as "Mad King" Ludwig due to his extravagant spending habits. He did mysteriously a few years later and the castle was never completed. It is now one of the main tourist attractions in Germany & has also been the inspiration for Walt Disney's fairy-tale castle in Disneyland.
When I was a small child, I used to see Neuschwanstein up on the hill but my parents never took me up there to see it. It took a return trip 55 years later for me to finally get the chance to see it up close.
Located on the Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse), it is one of the very last stops on that road. As always, Ed does most of the video filming (and narration that you'll hear), I did most of the still photography and then edited it all and created the final upload that you see here.

Munich and the Foothills of the Alps
In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of "Mad" King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle.

This was our first trip to the Reichsburg Castle in Cochem.
The tour was in German but we were given read-along sheets stating facts about each room. Our tour guide also spoke English so we were able to ask questions as they came up.
The views are amazing, and it really makes you understand a great history of a region.

Full Episode Guide: bit.ly/WceS0S
Germany only became a country in 1871, yet no nation has had a greater impact on the face of Europe. Megan McCormick and Justine Shapiro set out on a journey to look beyond the stereotypes and seek out the real Germany.
Megan begins her journey in Berlin. After World War II, Germany was divided into 2 countries: the Communist DDR in the East and the Federal Republic in the West. The most potent symbol of that division was the Berlin Wall which, until re-unification in 1989, ran right through the city. Megan sees one of the last remaining sections of Wall, checking out how the city's expansive new building program and modern architecture is transforming the city into a European capital fit for the 21st century. After joining comedian Fatih Cevikkollu to visit the neighborhood of Kreuzberg, known for its dense population of ethnic Turks, by far the city's biggest ethnic minority group, she takes a tour of the city's World War II sites, such as the location of Hitler's Bunker, where the fascist dictator, who planned the extermination of an entire ethnic group, the Jews, committed suicide at the end of the war.
Whilst Megan stays in an eclectic, hip hotel in the capital, Justine starts her journey in rural Lower Saxony, spending the night in a 'hay hotel' near the village of Langeloh - accommodation where you literally sleep on a bed of hay! Justine continues to the island of Sylt, a vast sandbar that juts out into the North Sea. Incredible beaches and spas have made it a popular retreat for Germany's rich and famous but its main claim to fame is as the German birthplace of modern nudism in the 1920s. Justine strips off and joins the naturists hanging out on the beach.
Megan then drives south in an open-top car along the 'Romantic Road', which takes her through some of the prettiest and most historic towns in Bavaria, including Dinkelsbuhl, where she witnesses the colorful 'Kinderzeche', or Children's Festival.
Justine, meanwhile, catches the Intercity express to in the Bavarian state capital of Munich, where she enjoys a very different kind of festival - Oktoberfest. She finds work as a barmaid at the festival, helping hand out the 6 million liters of beer which are poured down the throats of revelers at the world's most famous beer festival.
Megan visits the extraordinary, fairy-tale Neuschwanstein Castle, built by 'mad' King Ludwig of Bavaria, the grandson of the king who started Oktoberfest. Mad Ludwig was so called because of his bizarre behavior, decadent lifestyle, and a 20-year spending spree, which almost bankrupted Bavaria -- government officials conspired to have him declared legally insane and had him forcefully removed from the castle in the middle of the night.
Just a few miles from Neuschwanstein is Oberammergau, one of the most beautiful towns in the German Alps. When the plague struck in 1633, the inhabitants of Oberammergau vowed that if God spared their town, they would perform a Passion play about the death and resurrection of Christ every ten years. The inhabitants have remained true to their word, and more than half of the town's 5,000 population are involved in this once in a decade event. Justine meets with Jesus during his lunch break and learns what it's like to take part in the extraordinary event which is witnessed by half a million people.
Megan heads on to Friedrichshafen on the shores of Lake Constance, to fly in a Zeppelin, before heading on to Duisburg in the Ruhr Valley. The old industrial heartland of Germany is changing rapidly, and many former factories have now been closed down. Megan visits one old steel mill which has been inventively reborn as an adventure climbing center.
Justine travels on to Berchtesgaden, close to the border with Austria. This was Hitler's mountain retreat, and although many wartime buildings have been torn down in an effort to erase the memory of Nazism, Justine meets up with a historian who shows her around what's left of the site, including the Nazi museum which aims to educate people about the horrors of the regime.
Whilst Justine ends her trip with a mountain climbing expedition up the spectacular Mount Jenner, just outside Berchtesgarten, Megan ends her trip with a riotous and uninhibited party at the Love Parade, Germany's premier techno festival, as it makes its boisterous way through the streets of Dortmund in the Ruhr Valley.
