Universal Health Care in the UK Explained - Educational Video. Charley has the workings of the National Health Service explained to him. NHS. National Health Service Act. National Health Service Scheme. This item is part of the collection: British Government Public Information Films. Director: Halas & Batchelor. Production Company: Halas & Batchelor. Keywords: National Health Service; NHS. Introduction to the British National Health Service. This is an excellent visual aid for anyone teaching modules on the early NHS in Britain. It's an entertaining cartoon that provides a thorough introduction to the orignal aims of the NHS. Universal health care is health care coverage which is extended to all citizens, and sometimes permanent residents, of a governmental region. Universal health care programs vary widely in their structure and funding mechanisms, particularly the degree to which they are publicly funded. Typically, most health care costs are met by the population via compulsory health insurance or taxation, or a combination of both. Universal health care systems require government involvement, typically in the forms of enacting legislation, mandates and regulation. In some cases, government involvement also includes directly managing the health care system, but many countries use mixed public-private systems to deliver universal health care. In the 1880s, most citizens in Germany became covered under the mandatory health care system championed by Otto von Bismarck. The National Health Service (NHS), established in the United Kingdom in 1948, was the world's first universal health care system provided by government. Universal health care is provided in most developed countries and in many developing countries. According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the United States is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not provide universal health care. Universal health care is a broad concept that has been implemented in several ways. The common denominator for all such programs is some form of government action aimed at extending access to health care as widely as possible. Most countries implement universal health care through legislation, regulation and taxation. Legislation and regulation direct what care must be provided, to whom, and on what basis. Usually some costs are borne by the patient but are subsidized by taxation and compensated to the patient by the government. Many programs utilize some form of compulsory insurance to accomplish this goal. Other programs are paid for entirely out of tax revenues and provide automatic coverage for every citizen or resident. Virtually all of Europe has publicly sponsored and regulated health care. Countries include Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Universal health care in most countries has been achieved by a mixed model of funding. General taxation revenue is the primary source of funding, but in many countries it is supplemented by specific levies (which may be charged to the individual and/or an employer) or with the option of private payments (either direct or via optional insurance) for services beyond that covered by the public system. Most all European systems are financed through a mix of public and private contributions. The majority of universal health care systems are funded primarily by tax revenue (e.g. Portugal). Some nations, such as Germany, France and Japan employ a multi-payer system in which health care is funded by private and public contributions. A distinction is also made between municipal and national healthcare funding. For example, one model is that the bulk of the healthcare is funded by the municipality, speciality healthcare is provided and possibly funded by a larger entity, such as a municipal co-operation board or the state, and the medications are paid by a state agency. Universal health care systems are modestly redistributive. Progressivity of health care financing has limited implications for overall income inequality.

By 2050, 37 percent of the European population will be over 60 years old, presenting major new healthcare demands – and serious economic challenges as well.
The European Steering Group on Sustainable Healthcare, chaired by former Irish health minister Mary Harney, brings together politicians, health care practitioners and academics to address the issue.
“The status quo in healthcare is no longer an option. If we want to continue with health service in Europe that’s of high quality – universally acceptable to everybody on the same basis without care to be rationed – then we have to transform in a radical way the way (that) we provide services, how we intervene with patients at an earlier stage and how we empower citizens to take more control and manage their own health.”
The steering group has also already developed around 30 pilot projects in 21 countries.
After more than a year gathering data, the steering group presented a White Paper outlining its recommendations at a conference, entitled ‘Acting Together – a Roadmap for Sustainable Healthcare’, held on 19 March in Brussels.
Professor Walter Ricciardi, who worked on the White Paper, explained that Europe has a particularly old population, “especially in Italy and Germany.”
“For people with chronic diseases – that last many years and cannot be cured – we must reorganise services – not only hospital services, but also assistance on the territory and at home,” Ricciardi said.
Chronic disease is responsible for 86 percent of all deaths and affects more than 80 percent of people over 65. It costs an estimated 700 billion euro in healthcare spending each year.
Pascale Richetta, Vice President (Western Europe and Canada) at AbbVie, told euronews: “If I take the example of oncology, obviously oncology has moved from a very acute condition with very serious prognosis to – now for several of them – a chronic condition, but we can achieve this stage by early intervention.
“So really early intervention, early treatment, can minimise the seriousness of chronic condition and help people live longer,” Richetta continued.
Early intervention is at the core of a Madrid-based research project on muscoloskeletal diseases – the main cause of disabilities across all ages.
The initiative has seen impressive results, explained Professor Juan Jover, Head of Rheumatology at Clinico hospital.
“We were able to cut by 40 percent the numbers of days off work of people with recent onset work disability, and the economical results were very good, because for each euro that you invest in the program, you get a return of 11 euros in a couple of years,” Jover said.
Promoting responsible lifestyles can have a big economic impact. Especially in countries like UK, where 67 percent of men and 57 percent of women are considered overweight or obese, according to British government data.
Professor Vincenzo Atella, Professor of Economics at the University of Rome, explained: “Healthier lifestyles can enable people to be less overweight when they reach the age of 50, allowing Europe to save up to 100 billion euros between now and 2050. And this is only through lifestyle changes – not taking into account medicine or other measures.”
Reorganising healthcare systems may be a necessity, but the EU Commissioner for Health, Vytenis Andriukaitis, warned of the danger of cost-cutting in the wrong areas.
“If we speak about structural reforms, we must speak about impact assessment on public health. You can’t destroy access to healthcare in your so-called structural reforms. What does it mean healthcare? It’s (a) precondition for growth and jobs,” Vytenis said.

This patient named Mr Michael Bromberg came to us from Germany. He had a missing second premolar on the left side of the upper jaw. He wanted it to be replaced with dental implant. He was to go back to Germany. Hence, he wanted a one stage immediate load procedure. We took his x-rays and scan. The bone was a litttle compromised in width.
We did a bone expansion and ridge split procedure and placed a NOBEL ACTIVE Implant and gave him a zirconia crown on the top from ZENOSTAR. We finished this complete work in 5 days and the patient went back happy with his work completed.
We finished the case and sent the patient back home happy and smiling. Many such national international patients come to us from all parts of the world. They either get referred to us OR they check directly on the internet. They get motivated by our client testimonials and recommendations. Dental and medical tourism is very popular nowadays and we are the pioneers and leaders in dental tourism in India. India is getting a lot of these patients. Dental treatment especially is very expensive overseas and majority of the insurance plans do not cover dental treatment. People get motivated to come here as lot of Indian doctors are working overseas and they carry good reputation. The quality of care provided to the patients is the same as available overseas and exactly same materials and techniques are being used.
We use the same sterilization techniques, same branded international dental products to treat out patients. We specialize in doing dental implants, laser dentistry, cosmetic dentistry , comprehensive full mouth rehabilitation, single visit root canal treatment, bone grafting, periodontal procedures, computer guided implant surgeries using NOBELGUIDE , visible and invisible braces, clear aligners, lingual braces, preventive, interceptive and curative orthodontic treatment, preventive dentistry for children including sealant applications, orthographic surgeries, cleft lip and palate cases partial and complete dentures, crowns and bridges both routine and CAD/CAM metal free, gum grafts, porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays, laser gum de-pigmentation, laser gum re-contouring, laser periodontal therapy, post and core procedures, telescopic dentures, over-dentures, bar dentures, BPS dentures, implant hybrid dentures, all comprehensive oral surgical procedures including open and closed fracture reductions, removal of cysts and tumors from oral cavity, apicaectomies, frenectomies and so on. The Gelenk-Klinik, located in beautiful Freiburg, Germany alongside the historic Black Forest offers patients from around the world the latest specialized treatments in orthopaedic medicine in a modern setting featuring state of the art equipment. In existence since 1991, the Clinik has performed over 900 cartilage transplants, administering 2400 surgical procedures per year, 400 of which are endoprosthesis.
"The Gelenk-Klinik is characterized by their unique approach which focuses on offering various treament strategies so that the most appropriate solution can be chosen on a patient by patient basis.
Certified as a Centre for Endoprosthetic Surgery according to strict guidelines and regulations pertaining to excellence in surgical quality, diagnostics excellence, documentation, patient counseling and patient support, the Orthopaedic Gelenk-Klinik treats patients with a long-term strategy of minimal invasiveness and the goal of preservation of joints, natural tissues, bone and cartilage.
The preservation of the natural body helps prevent osteoarthritis and premature loss of joints, at the same time avoiding unnecessary scars and infections while facilitating faster recovery. The nine world-class doctors at the Gelenk-Klinik each have a specific area of specialization including foot and ankle, knee, hip, shoulder as well as cervical and lumbar issues of the spine.
Consultant for Arthroscopic knee surgery and founder of the Gelenk Klinik Orthopaedic Hospital, Dr. Peter Baum. Another aspect of The Gelenk-Klinik which makes it quite unique is the personalized and individual care patients receive from doctors and staff alike. Friendly customer care managers quickly learn what each patient needs to feel comfortable and are able to communicate in several languages. Susanna Agbevor speaks French, Claudia Ponert speaks Spanish, and Rashida Badaoui speaks Arabic.
All the staff at the Gelenk-Klinik speak English and naturally German. Any individual requirements a patient may have, for instance special dietary needs are happily addressed. Patients know that they are recognized and have a personal connection to Klinik staff as well as the doctors who treat them. The doctors at the Gelenk-Klinik are completely fluent in English and are absolutely comfortable answering any questions a patient may have in this language.
Good communication - in English as well as in other languages - is a must as over 250 international patients are treated each year at the Gelenk-Klinik, which goes out of its way to simplify the decision and process for patients from other countries to come to Germany for treatment at the Klinik.
In addition to speaking several languages, the staff at the Gelenk-Klinik will help patients facilitate the visa application process for Non-EU citizens, help arrange travel arrangements including transport to and from one of the nearby airports, support the planning of post-surgical rehabilitation and provide support and consulting to organise every aspect of the patient's visit.
Additionally, should the patient be accompanied by family or friends during their stay, the staff can recommend places to stay and things to do in Freiburg, which lies in the heart of Europe a short ride from both Strasbourg, France and Basel and Zurich in Switzerland. It's important to also highlight one last aspect of the Gelnk-Klinik, that being complete transparency. Patient's rights and legal security are ensured by German law.
The Klinik is ISO 9001 certified, which ensures that they continually meet the needs of patients while satisfying statutory and regulatory requirements related to health care. Unlike most hospitals and Kliniks, prices are clearly listed on the Gelenk-Klinik website so patients can have a very good idea of the financial aspect of their treatment in advance of their stay.
At the Gelenk-Klinik, the focus is on helping patients with minimally invasive procedures that preserve as much of the natural tissue as possible. Should you, a family member, friend or colleague have an issue and think the Klinik might be able to help, don't hestitate to use the "Make your Inquiry" form on the website www.joint-surgeon.com. The highly trained staff at the Gelenk-Klinik will be happy to evaluate your enquiry and respond - either by calling you or email - within the next working day.

In which John discusses the complicated reasons why the United States spends so much more on health care than any other country in the world, and along the way reveals some surprising information, including that Americans spend more of their tax dollars on public health care than people in Canada, the UK, or Australia. Who's at fault? Insurance companies? Drug companies? Malpractice lawyers? Hospitals? Or is it more complicated than a simple blame game? (Hint: It's that one.)

Recently we had the opportunity to visit Europa-Park, the largest theme park in Germany and second most popular theme resort in all of Europe.
This was the perfect opportunity for us to rekindle our childhood passion for rides. With over eleven different roller coasters alone we quickly realized we had never been to such a big theme park.
What we found cool was that the theme park was divided into different European countries. If you can't visit all of Europe going to Europa Park is like getting little slivers of it all.
Accommodating up to 50,000 guests per day, we were fortunate we didn't come during peak season; however, it was still crowded.
Overall, the weather was perfect, the rides were fun and it is an experience we won't forget anytime soon.
This is a bit of a surprise. We have an eight hour wait for a flight in Frankfurt, so instead of just hanging around in the airport, which was our original plan, we decided to drop our bags off and come into the city.
That pretty much wraps up our little visit to Frankfurt. We spent maybe three or four hours just walking around and it was really nice to just see the city without much of an agenda.
I came here with quite low expectations to be perfectly honest. I had heard more or less this is just a financial hub but it ended up being quite charming here in Frankfurt and I'm definitely going to miss Germany. I've had a wonderful time traveling around the country.
We aren't having much luck with the weather today. It is really rainy here in Freiburg. It is Easter weekend but we are out an exploring and we want to show you the city. Let's go have a tour.
One of my first impressions of Freiburg is that it is such a great city to walk around in. That's all we've been doing so far. It's very picturesque. There are cobbled streets and it is also very historic.
Thankfully, the weather has shifted dramatically for the better. Earlier we had been rained out, so we had to head back into the hotel because it was cold and windy. Now we're seeing a few patches of blue skies, so we're going to keep exploring around Freiburg.

Things to do in Germany | Top Attractions Travel Guide
Germany was a country we fell in love with. Having spent a lot of time in SE Asia, we felt the need for a change of pace and Germany was just that. From urban hubs like Berlin to hidden gems like Freiburg, Germany offers a lot for those willing to explore and dig a little deeper.
We start off our top attractions travel guide to Germany by focusing on Berlin. Below are the top 25 things to consider doing in the city:
1) Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery
2) Brandenburg Gate
3) Tiergarten
4) MauerPark Flohmarkt (MauerPark Flea Market)
5) Friedrichshain
6) Currywurst
7) Reichstag building
8) Tempelhof
9) Museum Island
10) Holocaust Memorial
11) Charlottenburg Palace
12) Checkpoint Charlie
13) Alexanderplatz - Berlin TV Tower
14) Ritter Sport
15) Berlin Cathedral
16) Currywurst Museum
17) Ride a Bike
18) Spree river boat tour
19) Wurst sausage
20) Friedrichshain Flohmarkt (flea market)
21) German Breakfast
22) Cat Cafe
23) Schnitzel and Spaetzle
24) U-bahn and S-bahn
25) Turkish Food
This is part of our Travel in Germany series. We're making a series of videos showcasing German culture, German arts, German foods, German religion and German people.

Welcome to Berlin, the capital city of Germany.
The first documentation of Berlin appears in the 13th century, and it has a long history of importance—it’s been the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia, among others. The lengthy history encompassing the city often manifests in its eclectic collection of architecture, which you should certainly include on your Berlin tour.
From the towering classical lines of Charlottenburg Palace, built for the Hohenzollern family in the 17th century, to the sleek mirrored sides of the Bahn Tower, you’re bound to find plenty to look at in the city’s downtown area. Fancy a real German lager? Stop by Prater Garten for a brew—built in 1837, it’s one of the handful of buildings that has survived both World Wars. You can sit outside and responsibly enjoy your drink, or, if the weather turns on you, head inside to enjoy a hearty German meal.
Ready to check out the rest of the city? You’re in luck. Berlin sightseeing is easy: Though the sprawling city has excellent public transit, Berlin is geared toward pedestrians, and you can access much of the city center on food or by bicycle. For a truly extraordinary experience, visit Museum Island, located in the Spree River. It features five museums, among them the Altes, completed in 1830 and devoted to antiquities. The newest structure on the premises, built in 1930, is the Pergamon Museum. Here you can explore the art of numerous cultures, or wander through a replica of the Ishtar Gate.
Are you one of those people who only starts to wake up after the sun goes down? If you’re looking for a thriving nightlife, Berlin is the place to go. When the sun sets on the city, the party really begins, and you can find any number of clubs where you can dance until long after the sun comes up.
Where will you go in Berlin?

Bavaria is the largest German territory. Its typical atmosphere is given by little towns and villages. Wooden shells, high red tiled roofs with many little skylights, old signboards, town walls, ancient churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, huge green areas and many flowers take us to a wonderfully calm and merry world. Beside the well known Octoberfest holder Munich and the medieval older town look keeper Nuremberg, Regensburg and Augsburg there are castles like the romantic Neuschwanstein that are waiting for the traveller. There are glittering lakes in the green pinewood like the Königssee and the Chiemsee, and mountaintops like the snow-capped Zugspitze. Though Bavaria is only one territory within the German territories everyone can feel it is quite different from the others. It is richer, friendlier and its atmosphere is more delightful than the country’s other territories.

Travel video about destination Berlin in Germany.
Berlin is Germany's modern capital city, a fascinating European metropolis with a dramatic history in which contemporary architecture merges with the imposing character of a centuries-old city.
The Nokolai Quarter was built by the DDR government as a sort of old town, a European Disneyland for the city's 750th anniversary, a popular area with 'new' medieval buildings that display various guilds and stone statues that surround the city's oldest church.
We travel to nearby Potsdam, a city of castles and gardens and with an old town that features a lively market atmosphere. When the monarchy settled there, so did their armies and with them came craftsmen, merchants and artists from many countries. The castle-like Nauener Tor leads to the Russian colony of Alexandrowka and then to Belvedere on the Pfingstberg.
Returning to Berlin we embark on a trip at the Eastern Train Station on the Panorama S-Bahn whose carriages are equipped with large panoramic windows and marvelous views turn the journey into a wonderful adventure.
The Olympia Stadium is still a gigantic and remarkable sight and for the 11th Olympic Games in 1936, the Third Reich spared no expense.
A new city has emerged from its historic past, Berlin, a young metropolis of the third millennium that is increasingly becoming the centre of Europe. This metropolis with a heart is always worth a visit!

Here I present you highly recommended places to eat and see in Munich City. If you are doing a sightseeing trip to Munich, be sure to check out these locations as they are all conveniently located in the city center.

Places featured in the video:
Rathaus (city hall) at Marienplatz
City gate at Karlsplatz, one entrance to the main shopping district of Munich
Englischer Garten: A big park with small rivers and ponds. An ideal place to take a walk with your dog or do sports. During summer, you can also enjoy a hearty meal of grilled chicken or pork knuckle outdoors at the Chinesischer Turm. Many will also come here to lie under the sun.
The street where you find all the branded and expensive fashion goods is called Maximilianstraße. Louis Vuitton, Versace, Dior are all located here.
If you feel like having a classic European brunch, go to the Vorstadt Café. As it is located very close the the university, you will find many young and fashionable people eating here. The price is very fair. It is open every day from 8 AM to 1AM into the night.
Alter Peter is the premiere destination in Munich to see the city from the top. There is a small entrance at a corner of the church from where you can start your journey higher. Entrance fee is 1.50 EUR. Make sure that you have enough stamina to climb the 306 stairs up (and back down again).
Viktualienmarkt is the best place to get fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, or wines directly from the farmers and immediate retailers.
Lou Lan Cha is a new bubble tea boutique specially tailored for the Taiwanese. Besides drinks, you will find lots of original and self-made snacks that you would otherwise only find in Taiwan. They have a variety of new things coming each time, so stay updated on their Facebook page.
Once you feel like enjoying a traditionally Bavarian dish, come to the very crowded Hofbräuhaus for a Sauerbraten or Schweinshaxe. Located nearby the Marienplatz, it is easy to find. Here you can find the menu which Germany's cuisine is famous for.
The Glockenspiel Café has various cakes and drinks. Grab a seat near the window to enjoy the unique view on the Rathaus while sipping your warm cappuccino on a cold and snowy evening.

Bavaria Travel Guide http://bit.ly/122uYVH
Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is a mountain resort town in Bavaria, Germany.
Garmisch was a small alpine dwelling inhabited by shepherds but the neighboring, Partenkirchen already existed in Roman times and was called Parthenon. The residents of the two villages probably didn't like each other much. They even built their churches with their backs to each other lest they should meet by chance. All this changed in 1935 when the two villages were united in order to have better chances at the tender to organize the winter Olympics. This is when they built their ice skating stadium that was once the biggest in Europe. The three run ski jump stadium at the foot of the -- and the bobsled track surrounded by mountain lakes. The city is still developing and it's become one of the most well known vacation and ski resorts of Germany.
However, it's not only a paradise for winter sports. One of Europe's biggest swimming complexes and the first wellness center Auschwitz was built in the 1970s. It has a water surface of 2000 square meters, a wave pool and an open beach. In summer, people can also swim in Riessersee, -- and Eibsee. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a real holiday resort with a well kept holiday park, theater, confectioneries and restaurants. Richard Strauss bought a villa here from the royalties who received for his opera Salome and lived here until his death. We can find villas similar to Strauss' in both parts of the city mixing with farm houses built in alpine style.
There are some Franconia and Swabian, wooden beam structured houses called Fachberg houses but there are more Bavarian ones. The latter are shorter, stubbier. Earlier these frescoes also called luftmalerei used to portray religious scenes but today, they'd rather tell the story of the house itself or the family who owns the house. On the walls of hotels and shops, they're a form of advertisement. The wall of Garmisch's oldest in inn, the Huszar is decorated with the picture of a dragon looking out the window.
The well kept gardens are full of flowers of an incredibly wide variety and naturally geraniums adorn all windowsills and railings. The new joint city hall was built in 1935 before the winter Olympics. The most remarkable event in the city surroundings is the passion play in Oberammergau. The inhabitants of the small mountain village have been performing the story of the passion of Christ every 10 years for 380 years now. Their ancestors took a vow to do this at the time of the great plague. The passion is performed for six month from morning until evening and is now a widely known event that draws hundreds of thousands of spectators.
A real technical relic, one of the old locomotives of the Zugspitzbahn is exhibited in front of the --house. New motor engines have taken its place in transportation which may not be prettier but are certainly more modern. Every winter, skiers, snow boarders and extreme sports lovers invade the mountains around Garmisch. The lower station of the Zugspitzbahn is near the stadium. There're several ways to go up the mountain including the cograils, cable cars, funiculars and ski lifts. But we can only get near the 2966m high summit with the Zugspitzbahn. Experienced hikers and mountain climbers can also reach the summit on foot in nine hours. The first person to reach the Zugspitz in this way was a Bavarian soldier in 1920.
The tracks wind between the houses on the western part of Garmisch then make their way up the steep hillside. Through the pine forests, we can see spectacular mountain lakes sparkling. The last stretch of the journey takes us through a long tunnel. Emerging from the tunnel, we are greeted by a beautiful small lake and after a couple of minutes, we reach the top station. On the summing, we'll find a ski lift and a resthouse with two coats of arms on its railings to show where Bavaria ends and where the Austrian province Tyrol begins. From the huge terrace, we can see the surrounding mountains of Vank, --. There's a small chapel on the snow speckled summit where victims of the mountains are commemorated.
The restaurant of the rest house offers tourists, mountaineers and skiers real Bavarian specialties and hot drinks. For our way down, we can also choose the cable car, the Seilbahn that takes us to the small lake of Eibsee instead of Garmisch. Eibsee is a crystal clear emerald colored mountain lake. Campgrounds and hotels have been built here and many people come here in summer to swim and row boats.

Frankfurt travel guide, Frankfurt , Germany, Tourism, Vacation, Tourism in Frankfurt, Tourism in Germany
Germany's fifth largest city, Frankfurt am Main is the nation's economic powerhouse, as well as being a highly regarded cultural centre.
Located in the middle of the highly productive Rhine-Main region, right at the centre of Europe, the city is the financial heart not only of Germany, but also of the European Union.
The modern skyscrapers of banks and big business in the central business district are potent symbols of Frankfurt's economic strength and create a skyline that is more North American than European in aspect -- indeed, the city is often dubbed 'Mainhattan'.
Most of Frankfurt's visitors come for one of the numerous trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses. But Frankfurt has another side. As the birthplace of Germany's most revered writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), the city is at pains to impress with its cultural pedigree. Excellent museums, high-calibre performance groups and local festivals tempt too.
-------------------
Frankfurt History
A settlement since at least 3000BC, and settled by the Romans, as the name of the Römer district implies, Frankfurt am Main, to give it its full name and differentiate it from Frankfurt and der Oder in the east of the country, has been Germany's financial centre for centuries.
Frankfurt's long history of commerce stems from its central geographical location on the Main River and the Frankfurt Messe (fair). The Messe has been going since the 12th century and the city received its official Imperial privilege to hold an annual trade fair 100 years later.
The Frankfurt Börse (stock exchange) began trading in the late 16th. If Frankfurt's political aspirations were dashed by the choice of Bonn as capital of the Federal Republic in 1949, the city has directed its post-war energies all the more wholeheartedly into its uncontested financial role.
Frankfurt has been subject to the deprivations of war on numerous occasions, notably during the Napoleonic Wars, when it was seized and occupied by the French on several occasions. And it was severely bombed during WWII, action that resulted in the almost complete destruction of the city's medieval centre -- hence its present mainly modern architecture.
However, a number of old buildings in the Römerberg area were reconstructed in their original style, as was the cathedral.
In latter years, Frankfurt has become a remarkably cosmopolitan city -- it's estimated that people of 180 different nationalities live and work there. It has large Turkish, Korean and Sri Lankan communities among these.
-------------
Weather in Frankfurt
Best time to visit:
Frankfurt's climate is generally mild and well balanced with warm, occasionally wet days in summer, with temperatures sometimes reaching 30°C (90°F) and more, and chilly winter days, when temperatures range between -10°C (14°F) and 10°C (40°F).

Travel guide video to Regensburg Germany.
If you are planing a trip to Germany - maybe you want to visit the Oktoberfest ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZzJ1hG3voc ) - you must see one of the oldest medieval cities, Regensburg.
As there is a very large amount of sights in the city and it's impossible to visit all of them within a day, I will only suggest the most important ones here. The advantage of the small size of Regensburg is that many of the sights are located in the central area and you will be able to cover quite a bit just by walking around. :) Regensburg is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, there is quite a huge amount of old buildings and monuments that you must not miss. The Dome St. Peter and the Stone bridge are the landmarks of Regensburg. My favorite views during our Walk through Regensburg, Germany:
Must-see Nr.1: St. Peter's Church (Dom St. Peter)
The landmark of Regensburg, the Dome St. Peter with impressive colourful stained glass windows from the 13th and 14th century, is the main and the greatest Gothic cathedral in Bavaria. Although the building works started as early as 1260, it was only finished in the 19th century.
Must-see Nr.2: Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke)
the Stone Bridge still is one of the most important bridges of the Middle Ages. Built between 1135 and 1146, it was the only fortified crossing of the Danube for a long period that was used by rich trading merchants. From here, you have quite a great view of the city.
In case you want to see more details about the city... here are my favourite Germany travel guide vieos:

Arriving at Frankfurt International Airport we faced a bit of dilemma. With close to eight hours to kill before our flight from Frankfurt to Brisbane via Abu Dhabi and Singapore, we had to decide between hanging out at the airport and getting online work done or going into the city to for some quick one day whirlwind tour of the city.
It wasn't long before we made the decision to head into town. Frankfurt, known locally as Frankfurt am Main, is the business and financial centre of Germany; however, I hadn't heard of many people visiting this city as opposed to using it as a mere transportation hub to get to more popular tourists destinations such as Berlin, Heidelberg or Hamburg.
With very few preconceived exceptions we immediately started to be won over by the charm of the city center as we ventured past the futuristic avant-garde skyscrapers to Römer square.
We couldn't help but notice the contrast of wealthy businessmen scurrying about in relation to relaxed hipster hangouts along the River Main.
Getting outside of the financial hub of the city allowed us to experience a quieter pace of life where many well maintained older buildings displaced futuristic modern ones.
One of our favorite experiences was visiting many of the green escapes where the hustle and bustle gave way to ponds, nature trails and geese.
Some of the top highlights of our afternoon stroll included visiting Römer square, various museums, the River Main, Römerberg, Alte Nikolaikirche, Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral, Römerplatz and Hauptwache.
Overall, it was the perfect way to spend the afternoon as opposed to being cooped up in the airport waiting hours on end for our flight.
This is part of our Travel in Germany series. We're making a series of videos showcasing German culture, German arts, German foods, German religion and German people.

The East Side Gallery is the longest remaining strip of the of the former dividing wall between East and West Berlin. Today the 1.3 kilometer long wall stands as a memorial to freedom and it is covered in art and graffiti. Right now we're visiting Brandenburg Gate. This gate dates back to the 18th Century. We're here at Tiergarten, one of the biggest parks in the city. MauerPark is a hipster hangout. Every Sunday people flock to this park and spend the day barbecuing, listening to music, enjoying a few beers, and simply having a good time. There's a popular flea market where you can pick up old vinyls and clothes, and if you head over to the Bear Pit you can catch some karaoke and musical performances. If you want to spot some cool street art, then head over to Friedrichshain. You can't come to Berlin and not eat a Currywurst! This is the city's most popular fast food snack. The sausage is served with a ketchup and curry powder concoction. Up next we're at the Reichstag building which has a pretty cool glass dome on top. This dome is actually open to visitors and it offers 360 degree views of the city. Today we're visiting Tempelhof, a re-purposed airport here in Berlin for leisure activities and sports. If you enjoy museums and art galleries you'll want to visit Berlin's Museum Island. They actually have five different museums here and if you get a daily pass for 18 Euros you get access to all five. We are now visiting the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. It is also known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Charlottenburg Palace is the largest palace in Berlin and the only surviving royal residence in the city. Checkpoint Charlie was one of the crossing points between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. Located near Alexanderplatz, The Berlin TV Tower offers a great lookout over the city. Chocolate! Ritter Sport is a chocolate brand that is sold all over Germany, and while in Berlin we couldn't resist sampling a few of the different varieties. Berlin Cathedral is located on Museum Island and it's one of the most beautiful churches in the city. If Currywurst is to your liking, you'll want to check out this quirky museum devoted to Berlin's favorite sausage. Renting a bike is a great way to get around the city. Most places will rent out bikes at 10 Euros per day. For a leisurely afternoon, hop on a boat and enjoy a tour down the River Spree. Of course, you cannot come to Berlin and not eat a Wurst or a sausage. The Friedrichshain flea market takes place every Sunday and it's a great place for people watching and a little browsing. The Germans sure know how to enjoy a hearty breakfast, and we recommend you try it too. Breakfast usually offers a wide sampling of loafs and bread rolls, accompanied with various deli cuts and cheese.
We couldn't resist visiting yet another cat cafe while we were in Berlin.
While in Berlin we enjoyed a hearty meal of Schnitzel. This thin strip of meat is coated in flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs, before being deep-fried. You can order it with a side of mashed potatoes or German noodles known as Spaetzle. It's quite easy to get around Berlin using the U-bahn and S-bahn system. In Berlin, there is a big Turkish population and that means there is awesome Turkish street food. And that's Berlin for you! A city that has risen from the ashes of the war, which is now bursting with art, music, and life.

Philips IFA 2015 Press Conference
Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) today announced the first in a series of personal health programs that empower consumers to take greater control of their health....
Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) today announced the first in a series of personal health programs that empower consumers to take greater control of their health. Each health program comprises connected health measurement devices, an app-based personalized program and secure, cloud-based data analysis. The first health program will debut at this year’s Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA), which takes place in Berlin, Germany, from September 4-9. It will be followed by health programs that focus on heart health, back pain and other health areas. The first personal health programs will go on sale in Germany in October 2015 and in other markets in 2016¹.
Philips personal health programs represent a new era in connected care for consumers, patients and health providers, as healthcare continues to move outside the hospital, and into our homes and everyday lives. They are built on the Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform, an open and secure, cloud-based platform that collects and analyzes health and other data from multiple devices and sources. These health programs leverage Philips’ deep healthcare and consumer expertise and will be brought to the market via professional and consumer channels. Every year over 275 million hospital patients are monitored by Philips equipment and Philips sells the same number of consumer appliances into homes across the world.
Philips personal health programs will empower individuals: to measure vital signs to understand how lifestyle choices affect their body; to set goals and monitor their progress; and to stay motivated with intelligent programs, developed with leading doctors and psychologists, responding to individual progress and making personalized recommendations. The programs meet the highest privacy and security standards, observing local laws such as the EU Privacy Directive and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
The health measurement devices that gather information for the Philips personal health programs are all Bluetooth enabled, connecting wirelessly to the Philips HealthSuite Health app so users can conveniently track their measurements over time. The health measurement devices automatically transfer data to the Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform.
Other products at this year’s IFA that also leverage the Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform are the Philips Lumify mobile ultrasound and the Philips Smart Air Purifier 8000i Series. Philips Lumify is the world’s first app-based ultrasound product of its kind, designed for emergency departments and other clinical settings. It comprises a compatible smart device, Philips ultrasound transducer and leverages the Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform to provide point-of-care diagnostics. Philips Smart Air Purifier 8000i Series, with new Aerasense technology, is especially designed to support people who suffer from allergies. It leverages the Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform to provide real-time data on pollens and allergens inside and outside the home.
Also on show is the latest addition to the Hue family, the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus, which can be controlled from your smart device and provides more light, shades of white and vibrant colored light. In male grooming, the Philips Smart Shaver series 7000, the world’s first connected shaver that learns and adapts to give maximum comfort even on sensitive skin. The Philips Connected multicooker, technology to cook healthy and tasty meals easily, with monitoring and control via your smartphone. And the full Philips Sonicare range of advanced oral healthcare devices, including the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean, Philips Sonicare AirFloss Ultra and the Philips Sonicare for Kids Connected.
Philips at IFA
The Philips press conference takes place on September 3 at 12.00 in Hall 22. It will be streamed live at www.ifa.philips.com. Philips Executive Vice President and CEO Personal Health, Pieter Nota, will be joined on stage by Wiebo Vaartjes from Gibson Innovations, and Nico Vernieuwe from TP Vision.

3D Printing High-Quality Low-Cost Free Medical Hardware
Making medical devices accessible and hackable for all
Despite the dramatic falls in costs of production, medical devices have remained prohibitively expensive for all but the richest countries and physicians. Using 3D printing, rapid prototyping and Free hardware licenses, we have been developing and releasing off-patent medical devices that perform as well as the gold standard for a fraction of the cost. In this lecture, we discuss the history and scope of the problem, our progress to date and how attendees can participate and make their own medical devices.
Most commonly used medical devices and supplies are simple to manufacture and have been around for decades or centuries. Despite this, they remain expensive and therefore out of reach for health care providers and hospitals in the developing world and even poorer health centres in the developed world.
Advances in rapid prototyping such as 3D printing and Free hardware licenses have recently allowed the local production of high quality medical hardware and devices for a fraction of the cost of proprietary alternatives. Through an organization we have named Glia, we are focusing on three key aspects:
In this lecture, specific examples will be highlighted of countries where medical needs can be met using this approach. Also, the devices and some details of their development will be discussed to enhance understanding of the process for others who wish to use it. Lastly, attendees will be given information on how to participate and collaborate in making their own devices or new devices.

The United States lags behind all other Western countries when it comes to healthcare for its people.
Universal healthcare, a norm in many countries, has not yet been made available in the United States. Consequently, the latest Census Bureau reports that over 45 million people in America lack health insurance.
The Kaiser Family Foundation argues that uninsured and underinsured people put an enormous financial strain on the healthcare system as a whole.
Those who step in to cover the costs of care to uninsured are struggling as the price of medical services has increased in last few years.
Is health insurance and access to healthcare a privilege or a right? Who are least likely to have health insurance?
Why is healthcare and insurance more expensive in the United States?

http://www.brightsightgroup.com || Reid goes to ten countries to find out why all the other industrialized democracies manage to provide high-quality universal health care but still spend half as much as we do. Reid explains how they do it, and why they do it. One key lesson is that most foreign countries do not use socialized medicine. Japan has 99 percent private hospitals and 5,000 health insurance companies -- but provides universal coverage and excellent care for less than half what we spend per capita.
