The President of the French Republic (French: Président de la République française) colloquially referred to in English as the President of France, is France's elected Head of State.
Four of France's five republics have had presidents as their heads of state, making the French presidency the oldest presidency in Europe still to exist in some form. In each of the republics' constitutions, the president's powers, functions and duties, and their relation with French governments differed.
The current President of the Republic is François Hollande, who took office on 15 May 2012.
The French Fifth Republic is a semi-presidential system. Unlike many other European presidents, the office of the French President is quite powerful. Although it is the Prime Minister of France and parliament that oversee much of the nation's actual lawmaking, the French President wields significant influence. The president holds the nation's most senior office, and outranks all other politicians.

France's former president Nicolas Sarkozy asked members of his opposition party on Wednesday to vote for proposals to reduce immigrants' access to welfare payments and citizenship.
Sarkozy, tipped to run for president in 2017, said the French welfare system made the country too attractive to asylum-seekers and that automatic access to free healthcare and housing aid should be scrapped.

War refugees should be welcomed but only temporarily, the head of Les Republicains party said. He repeated calls for the suspension of Europe's Schengen rules on free circulation of people inside the European Union.
Sarkozy is trying to craft a clear alternative to the more open-armed response of Socialist President Francois Hollande. At the same time, he wants to prevent far-right leader Marine Le Pen cashing in on immigration fears at his expense.
British Prime Minister David Cameron wants to restrict welfare for immigrants from within the EU. The EU's top court ruled late last year, before the current influx of migrants, that Germany could deny benefits to economic immigrants.
Sarkozy said France and Europe should distinguish between war refugees and longer-term political refugees, with acceptance of the former granted on a temporary basis.
"The situation is far more grave than people imagine," he added, addressing his party before a debate on migration in France's lower house of parliament.
He called on members to vote by Friday on proposals that would become the party line.
Sarkozy warned that France risked "implosion" if inward flows of migrants rose. The Schengen pact, which removed internal border controls across much of the EU, should be suspended pending a renegotiation, he said.
Speaking during the debate, Prime Minister Manuel Valls hit back saying there was no substance behind Sarkozy's "slogans".
He said France, which has proposed to accept 30,000 migrants over two years as part of an EU-wide plan to take in 160,000, had already temporarily restored some border controls.
"We will not hesitate to do it again as the Schengen rules enable us to," he said.
An Elabe poll published on Wednesday for BFM TV showed 80 percent of French people wanted to restore border control.

Hollande says French air strikes will be needed in Syria
STORY: President Francois Hollande said on Monday (September 14) that French air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria would be necessary.
"We are part of the coalition in Iraq, we have started reconnaissance flights to enable us to consider air strikes if they were necessary and they will be necessary in Syria, and we have already shown our determination in our the actions we run in the western African region," Hollande said in a news conference with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
France have until now only taken part in air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq because it feared such action against the group in Syria could strengthen Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Paris has also been heavily engaged in the fight against al-Qaeda militants in West Africa and has been providing logistical support and intelligence to Nigeria and neighbouring states combating Boko Haram militants.
"Boko Haram is linked to Daesh as we know, and receives aids and support from this group. Fighting against Boko Haram is fighting against Daesh. It is no longer possible to distinguish terrorism from regions. It's the same terrorism inspired by the same death ideology and that's the reason why France has for a long time by intervening in Mali, by supporting countries of the Lake Chad region started the fight against terrorism and against Daesh," Hollande said, referring to the Arabic acronym for Islamic State's previous name of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant.
Hollande last week said Paris was beginning flights over Syria because of the expansion of Islamic State over the last year and the threat its militants could have on French interests at home and abroad.
Paris was ready to join air strikes on Assad's forces in Syria in 2013 before U.S. President Barack Obama backed off the plan.
Buhari thanked France for its support in fighting Boko Haram in the region.
He said he hoped that the group could be eliminated by next May when countries of the regions meeting as Lake Chad commission would gather again.
"It's important that those countries of Lake Chad commission can be in a position by the next meeting in May next year to ensure that Boko Haram has been routed," Buhari said.

France: Hosting migrants will receive "1,000 euros per square metre"
France's Cazeneuve announces support for "refugee" housing
French municipalities which create accommodations for hosting refugees will receive "1,000 euros per square metre" of space added by 2017, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Saturday.
Additional aid will be provided to public and private owners providing local housing, to the tune of "1,000 euros per dwelling in question," he said during a meeting of French mayors at the Maison de la Chimie conference centre in Paris.
A fund will also be established to support venture capital financing for building projects which are creating living quarters or housing, he said.
Cazeneuve said Prime Minister Manuel Valls will this week unveil additional measures to increase the space for accommodating asylum seekers in reception centres, so as to ensure that they “are welcomed with the best conditions," he said. Valls will present the measures to the National Assembly on Wednesday during the debate on asylum.
Representatives from some 700 towns were gathered at the conference on refugee support Saturday, according to the ministry.
French President Francois Hollande announced this week that the country would accept 24,000 "refugees" over the next two years, with the first groups arriving this week from Munich.

France has announced a response to Syria's widening crisis with plans to launch surveillance flights and possibly airstrikes against the Islamic State group on Syrian territory. Lisa Bryant takes a look.
President François Hollande said France will begin surveillance flights of Islamic State positions in Syria as of Tuesday. Those may lead to possible strikes against the terrorist group.
In a wide-ranging press conference, Hollande said the flights aimed to find out what actions the Islamic State group is preparing against France and its allies and against the Syrian population.
But he ruled out putting French boots on the ground as inconsequential and unrealistic.

It also criticized the quality of the prosecution's case from the beginning, noting that expert testimony indicated there was possible contamination of the evidence.
The court also said intense media attention hurt the investigation.

With most of the precincts reporting, only a few thousand votes separated businessman Manuel Baldizón and former first lady Sandra Torres, both with about 19 percent.

VOA news for Tuesday, September 8th, 2015
From Washington, this is VOA news. I'm David Forrest reporting. France and Britain agree to take thousands of refugees.
French President François Hollande said his country would accept 24,000 refugees over the next two years.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said Syrian refugees from camps in Turkey, Jordan and Syria could settle in Britain.
"Given the scale of the crisis and the suffering of the Syrian people it is right that we should do much more. So Mr. Speaker, we are proposing that Britain should resettle up to 20,000 Syrian refugees over the rest of this Parliament.”
Europe is struggling to cope with the continent's biggest migrant crisis since World War II.

Security officers carried former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre into court Monday after he refused to take part in his trial on war crimes charges.
Guards then had to physically restrain the 72-year-old Habre as he thrashed about in his seat and shouted as an indictment was read against him.
For more, check our website voanews.com. This is VOA news.
Turkish fighter jets launched airstrikes Monday against 13 targets of the banned Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK.
The strikes follow an attack Sunday by Kurdish fighters on a Turkish troop convoy near the country's border with Iraq and Iran.
President Barack Obama marked the Labor Day holiday in the United States Monday by ordering federal contractors to provide sick leave for 300,000 employees.
Obama told a rally in Boston for union workers that he signed the executive order because Republicans have waged what he called a "constant attack on working Americans.”
"This will give about 300,000 working Americans access to paid sick leave for the first time, and builds on the growing momentum of people who are answering the call on paid leave across the country." :President Obama.
Italy's high court has faulted prosecutors that compiled the case against American Amanda Knox and her Italian former boyfriend, saying the case had "major flaws." Both defendants were acquitted for the murder of Knox's British roommate.
In its 52-page document, the Court of Cassation said there was no "biological trace" linking the two to the murder of British student Meredith Kercher. It also criticized the quality of the prosecution's case from the beginning, noting that expert testimony indicated there was possible contamination of the evidence.
The court also said intense media attention hurt the investigation.
French President François Hollande has called for a meeting with his German, Russian and Ukrainian counterparts to ensure that the peace agreement for eastern Ukraine is carried out.
Hollande said Monday he would propose a meeting be held in Paris before the start of this year's United Nations General Assembly on September 15.
Hollande said that if local elections are held in Ukraine, and reforms granting more autonomy to separatist areas in the east are implemented, he will ask that the sanctions imposed on Russia for its actions in Ukraine be lifted.
Pakistan's military says a locally developed drone has carried out its first attack, killing at least three "high-profile" militants near the Afghan border.
The military spokesman says unmanned aircraft attacked what he called "a terrorist compound" Monday in the Shawal valley of North Waziristan.
No other details have been made available.

Great vintage footage and interviews of veteran French men who were drafted, of Harkis (Algerians fighting for the French) and European settlers who had to leave Algeria after it became independent again in 1962. Many Algerians in turn immigrated to France and all who were involved one way or another in the fight bear the scars of the conflict even to this day.
Until 1999 this war was unacknowledged by the French government. It was only after Jacques Chirac recognized it officially that the oppressive silence was lifted and people concerned started to talk about it.
What strikes me the most is to see old men weep? Men are supposed not to let their emotions out but how good is it for a society when mental agony remains a taboo subject? How good can such a man be to his wife and children? To society at large? What values will he transmit to the generation that is following him if essential issues of human rights expressed through war and foreign policy cannot be addressed?
This conflict bears striking similarities with the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. People, men, fight to free their country from foreign occupation. As simple as that. They are "irregulars" because they are not part of a state-ruled army but what if their leader is corrupt and a traitor, then who will fight to free their country? Are they supposed to accept the occupation? Of course not! But by joining the resistance they become "unlawful combatants" and are not protected by the Geneva Convention. The French used this reasoning, just like Busk Jr did after the invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
History repeats itself, .

A man in a crowd grabbed French President Nicolas Sarkozy by the shoulder and nearly knocked him to the ground before being tackled by security officers and detained. The unusually aggressive incident occurred as the president shook hands with a crowd in the town of Brax in southwest France. The assailant was not armed, according to the national police service.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls ruled out reaching a deal with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for a political transition, in the French Parliament on Tuesday. Valls stated that he agreed with French President Francois Hollande when he called for airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria, adding "airstrikes are needed, but it is out of the questions that these strikes will help Assad’s regime."

French President François Hollande followed Friday’s events from the situation room in the Élysée Palace and delivered a televised address to the French nation.
“The call for unity, which I expressed earlier is our greatest weapon. Those who carried out these attacks, the terrorists, the madmen, these fanatics have nothing to do with the Muslim religion. Finally we must mobilise and be able to respond to such events by force if and when we have to.”
On Sunday a major rally will take place in Paris attended by a number of European leaders including British Prime David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

French President Charles De Gaulle and the Six-Year War. covers the era from the November 1, 1954 (Toussaint Rouge) to the Algiers coup d'Etat of May 13, 1958 (putsch d'Alger de 1958). U.S. documentary, about the Algerian war, written by Maurice Schonfeld in 1960, hence the era of 1960 to 1962 which saw a rebel faction of the French army with French settlers (OAS) fighting the French Army is not included.Algerian War of Independence from the French - 1954-1962 24 minutes documentary about the Algerian war.
