The Nanking Massacre or Nanjing Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking, was a mass murder, and war rape that occurred during the six-week period following the Japanese capture of the city of Nanjing (Nanking), the former capital of the Republic of China, on December 13, 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During this period hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers were murdered by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. Widespread rape and looting also occurred. Historians and witnesses have estimated that 250,000 to 300,000 people were killed. Several of the key perpetrators of the atrocities, at the time labelled as war crimes, were later tried and found guilty at the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal, and were subsequently executed. Another key perpetrator, Prince Asaka, a member of the Imperial Family, escaped prosecution by having earlier been granted immunity by the Allies.
The event remains a contentious political issue, as various aspects of it have been disputed by some historical revisionists and Japanese nationalists, who have claimed that the massacre has been either exaggerated or wholly fabricated for propaganda purposes. As a result of the nationalist efforts to deny or rationalize the war crimes, the controversy surrounding the massacre remains a stumbling block in Sino-Japanese relations, as well as Japanese relations with other Asia-Pacific nations such as South Korea and the Philippines.
Nanjing (Chinese: 南京; pinyin: Nánjīng; Wade–Giles: Nan-ching) is the capital of Jiangsu province in China and has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having been the capital of China on several occasions. Its present name means "Southern Capital" and was widely romanized as Nankin and Nanking until the Pinyin language reform, after which Nanjing was gradually adopted as the standard spelling of the city's name in most languages that use the Roman alphabet.
The real period of history, this is undeniable, it can not be distorted!

If you look at the Nanking massacre information on the internet you will be taken aback by the many entries from the Japan media side which do not recognise any undue killings over and above military operational casualties , In fact the whole period in Japan is only referred as the Nanking INCIDENT.

The Nanking Massacre: Facts, Pictures, WW2, Documentary Photos, Book, Women (1997)
The Nanking Massacre, also known as the Rape of Nanking, was an episode of mass murder and mass rape committed by Japanese troops against Nanking (current official spelling: Nanjing) during the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937. The massacre occurred during a six-week period starting December 13, 1937, the day that the Japanese captured Nanking, which was then the Chinese capital. (See Republic of China). During this period, hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed combatants were murdered by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. Widespread rape and looting also occurred. Historians and witnesses have estimated that 250,000 to 300,000 people were killed. Several of the key perpetrators of the atrocities, at the time labelled as war crimes, were later tried and found guilty at the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal, and were executed.
An accurate estimation of the death toll in the massacre has not been achieved because most of the Japanese military records on the killings were deliberately destroyed or kept secret shortly after the surrender of Japan in 1945. The International Military Tribunal of the Far East estimates more than 200,000 casualties in the incident; China's official estimate is about 300,000 casualties, based on the evaluation of the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal. Estimates from Japanese historians vary widely, in the vicinity of 40,000--200,000. Some historical revisionists even deny that a widespread, systematic massacre occurred at all, claiming that any deaths were either justified militarily, accidental or isolated incidents of unauthorized atrocities. These revisionists claim that the characterization of the incident as a large-scale, systematic massacre was fabricated for the purpose of political propaganda.
Although the Japanese government has admitted to the acts of killing of a large number of non-combatants, looting, and other violence committed by the Imperial Japanese Army after the fall of Nanking, a small but vocal minority within both the Japanese government and society have argued that the death toll was military in nature and that no such crimes ever occurred. Denial of the massacre (and a divergent array of revisionist accounts of the killings) has become a staple of Japanese nationalism. In Japan, public opinion of the massacres varies, and few deny the occurrence of the massacre outright. Nonetheless, recurring attempts by negationists to promote a revisionist history of the incident have created controversy that periodically reverberates in the international media, particularly in China, South Korea, and other East Asian nations.
During the 1970s, Katsuichi Honda wrote a series of articles for the Asahi Shimbun on war crimes committed by Japanese soldiers during World War II (such as the Nanking Massacre). The publication of these articles triggered a vehement response from Japanese right-wingers regarding the Japanese treatment of the war crimes. In response, Shichihei Yamamoto and Akira Suzuki wrote two controversial yet influential articles which sparked the negationist movement.
On August 15, 1995, the fiftieth anniversary of the Surrender of Japan, the Japanese prime minister Tomiichi Murayama gave the first clear and formal apology for Japanese actions during the war. He apologized for Japan's wrongful aggression and the great suffering that it inflicted in Asia. He offered his heartfelt apology to all survivors and to the relatives and friends of the victims. That day, the prime minister and the Japanese Emperor Akihito pronounced statements of mourning at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan. The emperor offered his condolences and expressed the hope that such atrocities would never be repeated. Iris Chang, author of The Rape of Nanking, criticized Murayama for not providing the written apology that had been expected. She said that the people of China "don't believe that an... unequivocal and sincere apology has ever been made by Japan to China" and that a written apology from Japan would send a better message to the international community.

Several of the key perpetrators of the atrocities, at the time labelled as war crimes, were later tried and found guilty at the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal, and were executed.

The Nanking Massacre, commonly known as the Rape of Nanking, was an infamous genocidal war crime committed by the Japanese military in Nanjing, then capital of the Republic of China, after it fell to the Imperial Japanese Army on December 13, 1937.
The duration of the massacre is not clearly defined, although the violence lasted well into the next six weeks, until early February 1938.
During the occupation of Nanjing, the Japanese army committed numerous atrocities, such as rape, looting, arson and the execution of prisoners of war and civilians.
Although the executions began under the pretext of eliminating Chinese soldiers disguised as civilians, it is claimed that a large number of innocent men were intentionally identified as enemy combatants and executed—or simply killed outright—as the massacre gathered momentum.
A large number of women and children were also killed, as rape and murder became more widespread.

UNESCO in deliberation on Nanjing Massacre, wartime sex slavery documents
유네스코
A UNESCO panel has begun its initial examination to include sets of documents related to the 1937 Nanjing Massacre and Japan′s wartime use of sex slaves on its Memory of the World program.
The decision is expected to be made this week.
Sohn Jung-in has more.
The Nanjing Massacre was one of the darkest events of the 20th century.
Over 300-thousand Chinese men, women and children were slaughtered by Japanese troops in the city of Nanjing in 1937.
In June of last year, the Chinese government submitted an application to enlist on UNESCO′s Memory of the World program eleven sets of documents related to the massacre and the issue of about 200-thousand sex slaves, mostly Koreans used by Japanese soldiers before and during World War Two.
On Sunday, the UNESCO International Advisory Committee opened a meeting in the United Arab Emirates to examine them and 90 other nominations for documentary heritage enlistment.
Due to the sensitivity of the issue, the advisory members were reluctant to give any details.
″I′ve been told to not to comment on anything. Ask her, UNESCO...″
″No, no. We cannot comment on anything. Sorry.
UNESCO′s director-general will make a final approval, based on the result of the panel discussion.
″I believe we all have some responsibilities to carry out.″
Japan has lodged a protest against the move and asked China to withdraw the nomination, questioning the authenticity of the materials.
Amid rising tension between the two countries, the international panel is expected to announce its decision later in the week.

ABOUT TED LEONSIS: We sent a VHS copy of this film and a marketing plan to the top executives at many internet companies including AOL and Ted Leonsis in the summer of 2005. We believe that Leonsis stole our idea for this film and then stole our marketing plan. People we later learned were working for Leonsis falsely pretended to represent us and our film and then stole over $25,000 in donated production funds then harassed and threatened our co-producer Haiyan Wu. The Chinese communist government which had been friendly and supportive turned hostile and refused to allow our film to be shown in China so that Leonsis would not have any competition. Those organizing showings of our film in China were even threatened by Chinese authorities, even though our film was being praised by all the major newspapers and media in China, including the Communist mouth piece, The People's Daily. Who benefited by stopping our film? Ted Leonsis.
Nevertheless, our film was shown in Nanking in December of 2007, the 70th anniversary of the Rape of Nanking. Unlike the Leonsis film which failed in Nanking, the showing of our film was a tremendous success and the theater was packed and people stood and lined the walls. A second showing in Wuhan China was even more successful. Whereas, in China, the Leonsis film was shown largely to empty seats, over 1,800 people showed up to watch our film in Wuhan and 300 had to be turned away.
Don't be fooled by Leonsis.
China Central TV called our film "the best... most influential film ever made on this tragedy."
Indeed, our film has been viewed an estimated 10 million times world wide, 100s of copies of this film are hosted on Chinese websites, and it has been viewed over 4 million times in the US.

The Nanking Massacre: Iris Chang on the Controversy, Causes, Casualties, Denial (1998)
The Nanking Massacre: Iris Chang on the Controversy, Causes, Casualties, Denial (1998) The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II is a bestselling 1997 non-fiction book written by Iris Chang about the 1937--1938 Nanking Massacre, the massacre and atrocities committed by the Imperial Japanese Army after it captured Nanjing, then capital of China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It describes the events leading up to the Nanking Massacre and the atrocities that were committed. The book presents the view that the Japanese government has not done enough to redress the atrocities. It is one of the first major English-language books to introduce the Nanking Massacre to Western and Eastern readers alike, and has been translated into several languages. The book was a source of fame for Chang but was also controversial; it was received with both acclaim and criticism by the public and by academics. It has been praised as a work that shows more clearly than any previous account the extent and brutality of the episode, while at the same time it was criticized as seriously flawed and full of misinformation and harebrained explanations. Chang's research on the book was credited with the finding of the diaries of John Rabe and Minnie Vautrin, both of whom played important roles in the Nanking Safety Zone, a designated area in Nanjing that protected Chinese civilians during the Nanking Massacre. The book prompted AOL executive Ted Leonsis to fund and produce Nanking, a 2007 documentary film about the Nanking Massacre. Chang spent two years on research for the book. She found that raw source materials were available in the US, contained in the diaries, films, and photographs of American missionaries, journalists, and military officers who were in Nanjing at the time of the Nanking Massacre. Additionally, she traveled to Nanjing to interview survivors of the Nanking Massacre and to read Chinese accounts and confessions by Japanese army veterans. Chang did not, however, conduct research in Japan, and this left her vulnerable to criticisms on how she portrayed modern Japan in the context of how it deals with its World War II past. Chang's research led her to make what one San Francisco Chronicle article called significant discoveries on the subject of the Nanking Massacre, in the forms of the diaries of two Westerners that were in Nanjing leading efforts to save lives during the Japanese invasion. One diary was that of John Rabe, a German Nazi Party member who was the leader of the Nanking Safety Zone, a demilitarized zone in Nanjing that Rabe and other Westerners set up to protect Chinese civilians. The other diary belonged to Minnie Vautrin, the American missionary who saved the lives of about 10,000 women and children when she provided them with shelter in Ginling College. The diaries documented the events of the Nanking Massacre from the perspectives of their writers, and provided detailed accounts of atrocities that they saw, as well as information surrounding the circumstances of the Nanking Safety Zone. Chang dubbed Rabe the Oskar Schindler of Nanking and Vautrin the Anne Frank of Nanking. Rabe's diary is over 800 pages, and contains one of the most detailed accounts of the Nanking Massacre. Translated into English, it was published in 1998 by Random House as The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe. Vautrin's diary recounts her personal experience and feelings on the Nanking Massacre; in it, an entry reads, There probably is no crime that has not been committed in this city today. It was used as source material by Hua-ling Hu for a biography of Vautrin and her role during the Nanking Massacre, entitled American Goddess at the Rape of Nanking: The Courage of Minnie Vautrin. The Rape of Nanking is structured into three main parts. The first uses a technique that Chang called the Rashomon perspective to narrate the events of the Nanking Massacre, from three different perspectives: that of the Japanese military, the Chinese victims, and the Westerners who tried to help Chinese civilians. The second part concerns the postwar reaction to the massacre, especially that of the American and European governments. The third part of the book examines the circumstances that, Chang believed, have kept knowledge of the massacre out of public consciousness decades after the war.

WWII through the eyes of a child. The harrowing story of one little girl, Xia Shuqin, who witnessed the murder of most of her family during one of history’s worst atrocities, the so-called “Rape of Nanjing”.
The Japanese Imperial Army over-ran the Chinese Nationalist capital of Nanjing in a matter of hours in 1937. Over the next 6 weeks, the city suffered unimaginable terror and horror. Statistics are disputed. But it’s thought that between 20,000 and 40,000 women were raped, and up to 300,000 Chinese were killed.

We have the triumphant Victory March of the victorious Imperial Army through the devastated streets of Nanking looked upon by the few living relatives of those killed by the thousands, todays equivalent would like the British Army doing a victory parade in the streets of Derry accompanied by the Orange order to celebrate the Derry massacre.
If you look at the Nanking massacre information on the internet you will be taken aback by the many entries from the Japan media side which do not recognise any undue killings over and above military operational casualties , In fact the whole period in Japan is only referred as the Nanking INCIDENT.

Japanese teacher seeks truth about Nanjing massacre
Tamaki Matsuoka, a history teacher in a primary school in Osaka, thought there were contradictory assertions over what actually happened in Nanjing in 1937 and wanted to know more about it. Over 27 years, Matsuoka traveled to China more than 80 times. In 2010, her documentary,"Torn Memories of Nanjing" was shown at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

One of the survivors of the Nanjing massacre witnessed the killing of seven members of her family by Japanese soldiers in 1937.
Tears of pride and sorrow, 86-year-old Xia Shuqin, awoke at 6 this morning and waited by the TV set. She wasn’t going to miss a second of the live broadcast of the military parade in Beijing.
"I’m so happy, so excited to witness this grand parade. I would have died 78 years ago when my family was ruined, if it were not for our beloved veterans....Thanks to our nation, I’m alive to witness this big day," Xia said.
In the morning of December the 13th, 1937, a team of Japanese soldiers broke into her house. They killed her parents, grandparents, and three sisters. She herself was stabbed in the back and arms. She and her one-year-old sister stayed in the house, with the bodies of their family, for two weeks, until they were found by neighbors.
"All nations should be against war. We must cherish peace. Only peace can provide us with a quiet and modest life. Those invaders must admit what they have done, and never do it again," Xia said.
78 years have passed, leaving not only scars on her body, but also emotional wounds. On the 70th anniversary of V Day, the strongest desire of this survivor of the Nanjing massacre, is that the Japanese government acknowledge what happened. She also hopes for peace and prosperity in the world.

A handful of protesters staged a demonstration outside the building housing the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong, on Thursday, to demand an apology and compensation from Japan over its invasion of Nanjing.
On Thursday, the 75th anniversary of the incident, protesters held a red banner and chanted "Never forget the Japan's war crimes, Japan must apologise and compensate (for the Nanjing Massacre)" as they marched.
Protesters paid a one minute silent tribute for those who died in the invasion and linked their protest to a more recent dispute over islands known as Diaoyu in China and the Senkakus in Japan.
The islands have been claimed by Japan, but the activists want them returned to China.
They burnt a petition letter intended for Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to show their discontent at the Japanese consulate who had refused to receive it.

In Nanjing, some 9,000 people including around 100 Japanese attended a ceremony to mark the anniversary.
According to the Kyodo agency Japan and China are divided on the number of victims.

About 500 people gathered in Nanjing on Monday to condemn claims by former Japanese soldiers that a wartime massacre in the central Chinese city never happened.
The Chinese government organised the rally after former Japanese soldiers and a historian denied the Japanese military killed hundreds of thousands of civilians during its 1937-38 occupation of Nanjing, then known as Nanking.
Protest speakers denounced those claims and vowed to honour the memory of those killed in the incident, known in China as the Nanjing Massacre and in the West as the Rape of Nanjing.
Old tensions between China and Japan over Japan's conduct during the Second World War flare up again.
Five hundred people took part in Monday protest in Nanjing, calling for the wartime massacre of hundreds of thousands of civilians by Japanese soldiers never to be forgotten.
Students, officials and a few survivors showed up for the hour long rally in unusually cold, snowy weather.
Protest speakers vowed to honour the memory of those killed.

Chinese and some Western historians say as many as 300-thousand people were killed.
A post-war tribunal in Tokyo put the number of dead at more than 140-thousand.

"I just want the Japanese to bow in apology and confess to us their crimes and promise that this will not happen again and that they will never invade any other country including China. Only in this condition can I start to be friendly to them."

The Nanjing memorial, built on the site of a former mass grave, displays photographs taken by Japanese soldiers of their fellow troops shooting and beheading Chinese captives.
But last Sunday, former Japanese soldiers and a historian meeting in Japan claimed the massacre never happened.
At the gathering in Osaka, they denied the Japanese military killed hundreds of thousands of civilians during its 1937-38 occupation of Nanjing, then known as Nanking.
The people of China on Monday angrily condemned the Osaka meeting.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
"I feel a deep sense of grief. Looking at this mass grave, I believe that every Chinese should feel grief, and, at this particular moment, beside grief, also hatred and indignation are the common feelings among all of us."
SUPER CAPTION: Wu Wenlei, student
State-run news media angrily condemned the Osaka meeting, which had been titled "The Verification of the Rape of Nanking: The Biggest Lie of the 20th Century."
The People's Daily, the newspaper of China's ruling Communist Party, said the conference showed that Japan had not come to terms with its wartime aggression.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
"We should, in every possible chance, we should try to remind all the Japanese we meet, no matter whether they are friendly or not, of the crimes they committed against our people of Nanjing sixty years ago."
SUPER CAPTION: Wang Guangwei, teacher
Critics of the meeting accused Japanese right-wingers of staging the conference to disrupt China-Japan ties.
Xinhua, China's official news agency, said relations would be undermined "if the adverse trend of denying hard historical facts of Japanese aggression runs rampant".
On Sunday, protests against the Osaka conference were held in universities in Nanjing, according to Chinese media.
Posters attacking the meeting also appeared last week at Beijing University and critical comments were posted on Chinese-language Internet sites.

STORYLINE:
Sirens sounded as over 10-thousand people gathered in Nanjing on Thursday to mark the 70th anniversary of Japan's notorious wartime massacre of civilians in the Chinese city of Nanjing.
The commemoration, which comes as China's government pushes to improve relations with Tokyo and avoid inflaming nationalist passions at home, brought the city to a standstill, state television showed.
The city reopened a vastly expanded memorial to the victims of the massacre long known in the West as the "Rape of Nanking."
Air raid sirens blared at 10 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) followed by a moment of silence, and new artifacts testifying to the savagery of Japan's Imperial Army went on display in the memorial's collection.
Soldiers laid wreaths for the victims of the massacre and some survivals and relatives of the victims stroke the "bell of peace" in the memorial.
Several thousand of doves were also released while people were striking the bell.
"The Nanjing Massacre should be considered as the history book for the young people, we should always remember the disaster the War has brought us," said Shen Zhonghai, one of the 30 a survivor of Nanjing Massacre who attended the event.
Around 3-thousand university students attended the memorial, as local universities took the event as part of their patriotic education.
A group of students redid the swearing ceremony to the flag of the Communist Party as party members just after the memorial.
"We are coming to the memorial here today to commemorate the 300-thousand compatriots died in the massacre and also review the vows we had when we joined the party so that we can regain the passion," said Zhang Sile, a student from a local university.
Nanjing also reopened its expanded Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum on Thursday, with hundreds of people lined up to visit the new memorial after the ceremony.
In line with the move to boost relations with Japan, reports on the anniversary and commemorations in the entirely state-controlled media have been understated, avoiding mention of long-standing demands for greater displays of contrition from Tokyo.
That comes amid plans for President Hu Jintao to visit Japan next year - the first visit by a Chinese head of state in a decade.
Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda is also expected to visit China soon.

This documentary, by Rhawn Joseph, Ph.d. is based on 20 years research and consists entirely of archival photos and film-clips. Part 2 is a continuation from Part 1. This film begins with an overview of Japan and China at the beginning of the 20th Century, explains the mind-set of the Japanese and their God, Hirohito, and then continues with the invasion of China, the crimes committed by the Japanese (during the Fall) on the road to Nanjing, the Nanjing Massacre, the rape of the Philipines, Unit 731, the Baatan death camps, Japanese denials, and the dropping of the A-bomb on Japan.
The purpose of this film is educational, and to explain the mind-set that led to a horrible crime: the torture and murder of 280,000 civilians by Japanese soldiers who took great pleasure in raping, bayonetting, beheading and burning people alive. We wish to emphasize: These crimes took place throughout Asia, and the Japanese planned the same for the White races as well, including America.
Those who do not learn from the past, are condemned to repeat it. The purpose of this film is, thus, educational. We have no hatred for the Japanese people.
This documentary is an independent production. We are not associated with and never received any financial help from the Chinese government or any group or organization. The film is completely independent. We have no political motives. We have no purpose and no other goal other than to create an interesting, provocative movie that speaks to the mind and intellect, and which can speak to the heart and one'e emotions.
Additional Credits: The musical soundtrack (all music is identified at the end of the film) was arranged and selected by R. Joseph, Ph.D., and was reproduced in this film courtesy of Arc Music Productions Int., LTD, United Kingdom; Nonsuch Records, Warner Music Group, Rhino Entertainment, New York; Sony Classical Music, New York.
Our film was shown in Nanking in December of 2007, the 70th anniversary of the Rape of Nanking.
China Central TV called our film "the best... most influential film ever made on this tragedy."
Indeed, our film has been viewed an estimated 16 million times world wide, 100s of copies of this film are hosted on Chinese websites, and it has been viewed over 6 million times in the US.

China released another Nanjing Massacre archive: A video by John G. Magee in 1937 for which he risked his life.
John G.Magee (1884-1956), was born in the US city of Pittsburgh, and served as a pastor in Nanjing between 1912 and 1940. From November of 1937, he acted as President of the Nanjing International Committee of the Red Cross, and President of the International Committee for the Nanjing Safety Zone. During the Nanjing Massacre, he risked his life to film a movie that truly recorded the scene of the massacre, and left extremely rare evidence to the world.

STORYLINE
"As a non-government organisation, we demand the Japanese government apologise and compensate for their war crimes such as "Comfort Women" and "Biological Weapons" during Nanjing Massacre. We demand a formal compensation," said David Ko, Member of Action Committee for Defending the Diaoyu islands.
"We are not expecting Japanese government to make any changes to their stance on Nanjing Massacre but we hope Japanese government would deal with the dispute in a civilised way, and realise the Diaoyu islands issue was the consequence of the war. They must return Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islands to China immediately," Ko said.
In Nanjing, some 9,000 people including around 100 Japanese attended a ceremony to mark the anniversary.
According to the Kyodo agency Japan and China are divided on the number of victims.
China puts the number of people killed during the rampage at more than 300-thousand, while estimates by Japanese academics range from 20-thousand to 200 thousand dead.

http://RapeofNanking.info Rape of Nanking: 2. Japanese soldiers rape, behead, stab, set people on fire, bury people alive, tear out the eyes of babies, rip open the stomachs of pregnant women, and then laugh while the victim suffers.
China Central TV called our film "the best... most influential film ever made on this tragedy."
Indeed, our film has been viewed an estimated 16 million times world wide, 100s of copies of this film are hosted on Chinese websites, and it has been viewed over 6 million times in the US.
