the Adiyaman Province of Turkey in the south east of the country is not wealthy – it is still classified as a developing rural region. Yet 25 miles from the small town of Kâhta the visitor discovers the remnants of once fabulous wealth. High on the summit of Mount Nemrut is a huge but little visited necropolis, home to the beheaded gods of the past.
Forty kilometers north of Kahta, Turkey, lies Mount Nemrut, a mountain adorned with the fragments of vast statues built over 2000 years ago. The stone sculptures once stood nearly 10 meters high and depicted lions, eagles, various ancient gods, and King Antiochus I Theos, who ruled Commagene from 86 BC to 38 BC. Ruins of the bodies of several sitting figures are visible on the hill above, illuminated by moonlight. Zeus' head can be found near the above image's center, while the king's head is seen next closest to the horizon. Visible far in the distance in this image, taken three months ago, is the familiar constellation of Orion. The red patch just below Orion's belt is the Orion Nebula, while the bright star to the left of Orion is Sirius. On the far left, a red and brightening horizon announces that the Sun is beginning to rise.

The former head of the main opposition Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) Adıyaman provincial branch, Bilal Doğan, has joined the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) along with some 200 relatives on May 18.
Doğan, who had resigned from his previous position to run for the CHP in the June 7 elections, has joined the HDP after he was not listed as a CHP candidate.
Doğan and his relatives marched to the HDP’s election bureau in the Karapınar neighborhood of Adıyaman late May 18.
Doğan was welcomed by Mülkiye Birtane, the HDP Kars deputy, at the election bureau. Doğan said he was feeling happy and hopeful joining the HDP.
He said while in the party, he will work to stop “the wrongdoings [and] exclusivist policies disregarding human rights carried out by the ruling Justice and Development Party [AKP].”
Birtane said people from different religions, identities and ethnic backgrounds, along with all dissenters, would unite under the umbrella of the HDP. She also said that they expected more party support and participation from all across the country.
The incident came a week after a number of local clans in southeastern Turkey, who had been known to vote for the AKP, announced their support for the HDP in the upcoming elections. They have held a demonstration in support of the HDP on the streets of Şanlıurfa, a southeastern province.

An independent parliamentary deputy candidate, who had gone missing in a district in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa late on May 30, was found handcuffed and beaten up on June 3 in the neighboring province of Gaziantep.
Halil İbrahim Gögüş, 41, was reported missing by his relatives as they had not received any news from him since May 30, when he went to the Karaköprü district to campaign ahead of the June 7 parliamentary elections.
Security forces found Göğüş beaten up and handcuffed with plastic handcuffs on the Gaziantep-Nizip road, following a tip off by a passerby. He was taken to hospital but was reported to be in a stable condition. He has reportedly said he cannot remember what happened.
The police have launched an investigation, and six people had been detained and released on probation after questioning.
Şanlıurfa Governor İzettin Küçük had said Göğüş was not from Şanlıurfa and did not have many connections in the province as he was registered in the neighboring Adıyaman province’s Besni district and previously lived in Japan, while his family currently resides in the Aegean province of İzmir.

A newly-released report by Turkey’s main opposition Republican People's Party has accused Ankara of turning a blind eye to the ISIL activities in the south. The CHP report says ambulances are routinely used to transfer wounded terrorists into Turkish soil.
A CHP delegation, which visited the province of Adiyaman, has found that the ISIL terrorist group not only treats its injured militants in local hospitals, but has a recruitment network across the region. The ISIL finds most of its recruits from local coffeehouses and mosques. Many of those recruits have crossed the border several times to fight in Syria. Based on the CHP report, families have tipped off the Turkish intelligence service and security forces about the ISIL activities, but their calls have only fallen on deaf ears. Meanwhile, Jemil Bayik a leading commander of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party has also accused Turkey of attacking PKK fighters in order to protect the ISIL.

Excavation activities at the archaeological site in the ancient city of Perge, which was one of the centers of the Kommagene civilization, will soon commence with the aim of opening up the site for tourism. Excavations will begin soon in the ancient city, located in the southeastern province of Adıyaman, five kilometers away from the city center. It is home to some 200 stone tombs as well as a still-functional fountain.
The ancient city, located between the capital of the Kommagene Kingdom, Samosata (today Samsat), and Melitene (today Malatya), is mentioned in Roman resources for its beautiful water.
The city served as a resting place for travelers, caravans and armies. The archaeological site directly beside the ancient city is waiting to be discovered.
The Adıyaman Governor’s Office has initiated a project to open the nearly 15,000-hectare site to tourism. Following the expropriation works, excavation activities will begin in the region.
Governor Mahmut Demirtaş said the ancient city of Perge held significance for the country’s tourism. He said the Provincial Special Administration carried out excavations in the region 13 years ago, and the outcome was the discovery of 363 historical and cultural artifacts as well as the stone tombs. Demirtaş said the excavation work had to be suspended because of natural hazards.
Project designed
However, he said they have now designed a project to bring the Kommagene civilization to light.
“Environmental arrangement work will end within a month and then excavations will start. This place has much to offer Turkey. It has an area of 15,000 hectares and the real history lies here. Therefore, we will search for traces of the Kommagene civilization during the excavation work. Currently, our priority is expropriation because there are 134 houses close to the archaeological site. Then infrastructure and excavation work will begin,” he said.
The governor said an area of 60,000 hectares was taken under control within the scope of the environmental arrangements.
He also noted the management of the ancient city of Perge was handed over to the Turkish Travel Agencies Union (TÜRSAB) by the Culture and Tourism Ministry and entrances and exits would be more organized in this way.
“TÜRSAB is working professionally,” he said, adding, “The city of Adıyaman will be revived if this place is included as a tourism destination.”

A Turkish actor, who was claimed to be suffering from a psychological disorder, has killed his father in the Kahta district of the southeastern province of Adıyaman.
Actor Orhan Şimşek, 30, who most recently acted on the Turkish television show “Küçük Gelin” (Little Bride), has turned himself in to security forces after killing his father. His father’s body was found on a piece of land a few kilometers outside the small town.
Şimşek had first made headlines when he disappeared in the Marmara province of Yalova along with his father in January.
Şimşek’s mother, Müyesser Şimşek, had said her son was suffering from bipolar affective disorder, a psychological disorder characterized by erratic and significant mood swings, adding he had a seizure and left home.
His press advisor later announced he had returned home and was in good health.
Şimşek began his career on a local public education center stage in Istanbul between 2000 and 2002. He graduated from the drama department of Haliç University in 2005. He has acted in five television shows since 2007, including his latest Küçük Gelin, broadcasted on Samanyolu Television.

Turkey is targeting Islamic State in investigations of a double suicide bombing in Ankara that killed up to 128 people, officials said on Sunday, while opponents of President Tayyip Erdogan blamed him for the worst such attack in Turkish history.
Government officials made clear that despite alarm over the attack on a rally of pro-Kurdish activists and civic groups, there would be no postponement of November polls Erdogan hopes can restore an overall majority for the AK Party he founded.
Thousands of people gathered near the scene of the attack at Ankara's main railway station, many accusing Erdogan of stirring nationalist sentiment by his pursuit of a military campaign against Kurdish militants, a charge Ankara vehemently rejects.
"Murderer Erdogan", "murderer police", the crowd chanted in Sihhiye square, as riot police backed by water cannon vehicles blocked a main highway leading to the district where parliament and government buildings are located.
The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), a major presence at Saturday's march and holding seats in parliament, said police attacked its leaders and members as they tried to leave carnations at the scene. Some were hurt in the melee, it said in a statement.
The attacks have shocked a nation beset by resurgent conflict with the militant Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in its southeast and increasingly threatened by spillover from the war in neighboring Syria.
Islamic State fighters are encamped close to its borders, which mark also the frontier of the NATO alliance, and last week Russia launched air strikes in Syria, its planes violating Turkish air space on several occasions.
SURUC BOMBING SIMILARITIES
Two senior security sources said initial signs suggested Islamic State was behind the Ankara attack, and that it bore striking similarity to a July suicide bombing in Suruc near the Syrian border, also blamed on the radical Islamists.
"All signs indicate that the attack may have been carried out by ISIL (Islamic State). We are completely focused on ISIL," one of the sources told Reuters.
CHP opposition leader Ahmet Kilicdaroglu, speaking after a meeting with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, said he had been told both suicide bombers were men.

State-run Anadolu Agency said police detained 43 suspects in operations targeting the Islamic State across Turkey from Sanliurfa in the southeast to Izmir in the west and Antalya on the south coast. It was not clear when they were held.
The Haberturk newspaper reported police sources as saying the type of explosive and the choice of target pointed to a group within Islamic State known as the 'Adiyaman ones', referring to Adiyaman province in southeast Turkey.
Turkey is vulnerable to infiltration by Islamic State, which holds swathes of Syrian land abutting Turkey where some two million refugees live. But the group, not normally reticent about its attacks, made no claim to the Suruc bombing and has made no reference to the Ankara attack in internet postings
The HDP, which expanded beyond its Kurdish voter base and drew in mainly left-wing opponents of Erdogan at June elections, said the death toll had risen to 128 and that it had identified all but eight of the bodies.
The prime minister's office said late on Saturday that 95 people had been killed.
The scale of the casualties eclipsed attacks blamed on al Qaeda in 2003 when two synagogues, the Istanbul HSBC Bank headquarters and the British consulate were hit, killing 62 people. Questions have been raised over whether a parliamentary election due on Nov. 1 can be safely held.

Turkey's military and Islamic State fighters have exchanged fire over the Syrian-Turkish border, killing one soldier, officials say.
The governor of Kilis province said another two soldiers were injured when a border post was attacked from Syria.
Turkey responded with heavy weapons, killing one IS militant, the army said.
It is the latest violence to hit Kurdish-dominated south-east Turkey, three days after 32 people were killed by a bomber linked to IS in Suruc.
Turkish officials have blamed the Suruc attack on IS.
"Unfortunately, one of our non-commissioned officers has been martyred and two sergeants injured," Kilis Governor Suleyman Tapsiz told Turkey's Anadolu news agency.
He added that the two wounded soldiers were in a stable condition.
In response, Turkish tanks opened fire on IS-controlled targets inside Syria, the Turkish army said.
It added that one IS militant was killed.
The latest attacks have added to the bloodshed in the area of Turkey nearest to IS-held territory.
On Monday, a suicide blast killed 32 people and injured another 100 in the mainly Kurdish town of Suruc, near the Syrian border. It was one of the deadliest attacks in Turkey in recent years.
A 20-year-old Turkish student has been identified as the suicide bomber.
The attacker, named by local media as Seyh Abdurrahman Alagoz, was an ethnic Kurd from Turkey's south-eastern province of Adiyaman and reportedly had links to IS militants.
Alagoz's mother told the newspaper Radikal (in Turkish) that her son was a former student at Adiyaman university who had gone "abroad" six months ago with his brother.
"I don't know what they were doing abroad, they never said. They were just telling me they were fine," Semure Alagoz said.

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Co-chairman Selahattin Demirtaş has corrected claims in an article published by the Cumhuriyet daily on Wednesday which suggested that his party would give outside support to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government if it comes to power again following the June 7 general elections.
In its headline story on Wednesday, Cumhuriyet wrote: “HDP warm to outside support,” of the AK Party government if it comes to power alone on condition that the settlement process with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) continues.
Cumhuriyet based its story on statements by Demirtaş, who spoke to a group of journalists from the daily following an election rally he held in the eastern province of Adıyaman.
The story said the party is not willing to set up a coalition government with the AK Party if the HDP passes the 10 percent election threshold because they believe such a move would damage the reputation of their party, but the paper said the HDP is warm to the idea of giving the AK Party government outside support.
Demirtaş, who spoke at an election rally in Malatya on Wednesday, denied the claims in Cumhuriyet. “The Cumhuriyet newspaper said, ‘The HDP will give outside support to the AKP [another name for the AK Party] in Parliament.' I don't want to call it ill-intentioned, but it is a misunderstanding. The job of the HDP is not to support [the AK Party] but to make it account for its actions. I did not say anything like [what appeared in Cumhuriyet]. We don't have any intention of giving either inside or outside support. I hope Cumhuriyet will correct this mistake.”
The paper's Can Dündar responded to these statements in his column on Thursday. He said what Cumhuriyet wrote regarding the HDP giving outside support to the AK Party was based on his impressions as one of the journalists speaking with Demirtaş in Adıyaman, rather than the co-chair's exact words.
Yet, Dündar also said that Demirtaş is responsible for his impressions and he stands by what he wrote.
Unlike what most pro-Kurdish political parties have done in the past, the HDP is running as a party in the general elections rather than fielding independent candidates to circumvent Turkey's 10 percent election threshold.
