Antarctica is a land of extremes: it is the coldest and driest continent on Earth and has the highest average elevation. As the fifth largest continent in the world, Antartica is also the most Southern, overlying the "South Pole". Scarcely touched by humans, the frozen land boasts breathtaking scenery, broken by only a handful of scientific bases and a "permanent" population of scientists numbering only a few thousand. Visitors to Antarctica generally must brave rough sea crossings aboard ice-strengthened vessels, but those who do are rewarded with amazing scenery and tremendous and unique wildlife.
Destinations
=============
The primary destinations for those visiting Antarctica will either be a research base (for those working on the frozen continent) or the Antarctic Peninsula or Ross Sea area (for those visiting by ship). Other destinations are reachable only by those blessed with extreme motivation and (most importantly) funding.
South Pole — needs no introduction
Southern pole of inaccessibility — the furthest place in Antarctica from the Southern Sea (in other words the hardest place to get to in the world), home to an abandoned Soviet station, which although covered by snow, still bears a visible gold Lenin bust sprouting from the snow and facing Moscow (if you can find a way inside the building, then there's a golden visitor book to sign)
Mount Erebus — world's southernmost active volcano, on Ross Island right next to ~Mount Terror!~
Anver Island / Anvord Bay — if any part of Antarctica is "touristy," this is it, home to Palmer Station (U.S.), the museum at Port Lockroy, Cuverville Island, and the only two cruise ship stops on the continent: Paradise Bay and Neko Harbor
South Shetland Islands — another set of major attractions on the Antarctic Peninsula cruise ship circuit, including: penguins and hot springs at Deception Island, Hannah Point, Half Moon Island, Aitcho Islands, Artigas Base (Uruguay), and the ever friendly Polish researchers at Arctowski Station
McMurdo Sound — McMurdo Station (USA) and Scott Base (New Zealand) on the mainland near Ross Island
Mawson's Huts — the small encampment of Sir Douglas Mawson's ill-fated Australian Antarctic Expedition, of which he was the sole survivor, at Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay

A tour of Galway City is a walk down the streets of a settlement that has seen much. Once a major trading post in the Middle Ages, Galway City also endured a nearly year-long siege during the Cromwellian Conquest of Ireland. Though its fortunes have ebbed and flowed over the years, Galway City is now a vibrant entertainment hub and a beloved destination for visitors from all over the world.
We recommend that your Galway City sightseeing include a look into some of the city’s famed local history. Galway City grew from a settlement around the Dun Bhun na Gaillime, a fort that once overlooked the River Corrib. Once you’ve learned a bit about The City of the Tribes—one of Galway City’s many nicknames—it’s time to find out why Galway City is also referred to as “The Cultural Heart of Ireland.” The residents of this city love music and the arts, and it seems every other day there’s some sort of festival or event going on. Whether you want to attend a concert or celebrate a gallery opening, Galway City probably has something up your alley.
While you can lose count of all the local performances you take in at pubs and cafes, don’t lose sight of Galway City’s natural beauty. As the sun goes down, you can take a stroll along Galway Bay, exchange stories of adventure with the residents, and take a breath of fresh sea air.

For a peek into history, pay a visit to Dunluce Castle, located on the coast of Northern Ireland. This crumbling medieval stronghold was first constructed in the 13th century, though historians believe it was built over the bones of an even older Irish fort. The castle changed hands and was often modified until the 1600s, after which it was largely abandoned.
Dunluce Castle perches atop a basalt cliff, and is accessible only via a narrow bridge. A Dunluce Castle tour is a great opportunity to explore the ruins, which include two drum towers—the distinctive round protrusions seen on so many castles. Wander across the old cobblestone courtyard and look out over the sea, or make your way down the steps to the wishing well. Whatever you do, don’t forget to stop by the mermaid’s cave during your Dunluce Castle sightseeing. The cave is a remarkable natural cathedral located beneath the fortress; stand still and listen—can you hear the ghosts of the sailors reportedly stranded in here?
If you’d really like a taste of the castle’s lore, book a guided tour in advance to learn about some of the local myths and legends. You may even get to hear about the recently rediscovered Dunluce Town that is currently being excavated.

PangeaSeed, the international marine conservation organization, in collaboration with 1xRUN, Tony Delfino, and World Art Destinations, hosted the second annual summer series of its groundbreaking mural festival, Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans. The festival took place from July 17 - 26, 2015, creatively beautifying the Caribbean island of Cozumel, Mexico, while bringing education, connection, and inspiration to the community. This special video give the viewer an insider point of view of daily events and interactions between the artists, staff and local community.
Within the span of 5 days, 35 large-scale public murals were realized throughout Cozumel's town center, addressing pressing marine environmental issues such as shark finning, over fishing, coastal development, climate change, and coral reef conservation. This series of Sea Walls murals helps educate and raise greatly needed awareness within the local and tourist communities for the plight of our ocean and the life that calls it home. In addition to the realization of the murals, the artists had the opportunity to immerse themselves into and experience the various marine ecosystems of Cozumel Island, and learn from local experts about environmental challenges they are facing. The team also had the chance to both witness endangered sea turtles lay their eggs, as well as help release sea turtle hatchlings into the ocean.
Throughout the week, PangeaSeed team members facilitated youth educational activities where the island's local kids were able to learn about the importance of marine animals such as sharks, turtles, and dolphins whilst making arts and crafts from reclaimed materials. Furthermore, a public screening of award-winning documentary film México Pelágico attracted over 100 residents to the main square of Cozumel. The film highlights the vast diversity of marine biodiversity in Mexico, the challenges, and pioneering efforts to help sustain the health of the ocean ecosystem in Mexico.
PangeaSeed's Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans is the first movement of its kind helping to save our seas via public art and activism (ARTivism). The festival featured over 50 contemporary artists from across the globe, collaborating to bring vital ocean environmental issues into the spotlight. Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans aims to educate and inspire individuals and communities to protect the planet's most important ecosystem: the ocean.
"The power of public art and activism has the ability to educate and inspire the global community to help save our seas. No matter where you are in the world, the ocean supplies us with every second breath we take and life on Earth cannot exist without healthy oceans. With dwindling global fish stocks, rising sea levels, and widespread pollution, whether you live on the coast, in the city or in the mountains, we should all feel responsible for the health of the oceans and life that lives within it," says PangeaSeed Executive Director Tre' Packard.
The renowned artists involved in the project included 15 local islanders, 11 from Mexico and 24 from eleven countries around the world, all using paint donated by Montana Cans and Osel:

The station is the largest community in Antarctica, capable of supporting up to 1,258 residents, and serves as the United States Antarctic science facility. All personnel and cargo going to or coming from Amundsen--Scott South Pole Station first pass through McMurdo.
12. Cape Denison
Cape Denison is a rocky point at the head of Commonwealth Bay in Antarctica. It was discovered in 1912 by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Douglas Mawson, who named it for Sir Hugh Denison of Sydney, a patron of the expedition. The cape was the site of the expedition's main base. Called by Mawson "the windiest place on Earth", the site experiences fierce katabatic winds.
11. Whale Encounters
One of the major pay-offs of the long passage across the Southern Ocean is the chance to spot migrating whales circulating through krill-rich waters. Once nearer to land, if you're in a Zodiac, calling it whale-watching doesn't do it justice: you could be close enough to get a 'whale bath'.
10. Charlotte Bay & Cuverville Island
Charlotte Bay is a bay on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula indenting the west coast of Graham Land in a southeast direction for 12 nautical miles, between Reclus Peninsula and Cape Murray. Its head is fed by Renard Glacier, Krebs Glacier and Bozhinov Glacier.
9. Antarctic Museum at Port Lockroy
Port Lockroy is a natural harbour on the north-western shore of Wiencke Island in Palmer Archipelago of the British Antarctic Territory. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations for cruise-ship passengers in Antarctica. Proceeds from the small souvenir shop fund the upkeep of the site and other historic sites and monuments in Antarctica.
8. Deception Island
Deception Island has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which caused serious damage to the local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station; it is now a tourist destination and scientific outpost.
7. Grytviken, South Georgia
Grytviken is a settlement in the British territory of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. It is the best harbour on the island, consisting of a bay within a bay. The site is quite sheltered, provides a substantial area of flat land suitable for building, and has a good supply of fresh water.
6. Paradise Harbor
Paradise Harbor is a wide embayment behind Lemaire and Bryde Islands in Antarctica, indenting the west coast of Graham Land between Duthiers and Leniz Points. The name was first applied by whalers operating in the vicinity and was in use by 1920. It is one of only two harbors used for cruise ships to stop on the continent.
5. Shackleton's Hut
When Shackleton went into McMurdo Sound in 1908, having failed to land on King Edward VII Land, he decided to build a hut at Cape Royds, a small promontory twenty-three miles north of Hut Point where Scott had stayed during the Discovery Expedition. The whole shore party lived in this hut through the winter of 1908.
4. Cape Evans
Cape Evans is a rocky cape on the west side of Ross Island, forming the north side of the entrance to Erebus Bay. Scott's Hut hut has been designated a Historic Site or Monument, following a proposal by New Zealand and the United Kingdom to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.
3. Cruising the Lemaire Channel
Lemaire Channel is a strait off Antarctica, between Kiev Peninsula in the mainland's Graham Land and Booth Island. Nicknamed "Kodak Gap" by some, it is one of the top tourist destinations in Antarctica; steep cliffs hem in the iceberg-filled passage, which is 11 km long and just 1,600 metres wide at its narrowest point.
2. Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station
The Amundsen--Scott South Pole Station is a US scientific research station at the Geographic South Pole, the southernmost place on the Earth. The station is located on the high plateau of Antarctica at an elevation of 2,835 metres above sea level.
1. Meeting the Penguins
When you first lay eyes on these ever-anthropomorphized birds, you'll know you've arrived in the Antarctic. From the tiny tuxedo-clad Adélie and the bushy-browed macaroni, to the world's largest penguin, the fabulously debonair emperor, the Antarctic offers a chance to see these unique creatures on their own turf: sea, ice and shore.

The Secret Land is a 1948 American documentary film about an American expedition code-named "Operation High Jump" to explore Antarctica. It won the Academy Award for Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
This documentary, filmed entirely by military photographers, recounts the U.S. Navy's 1946-47 expedition to Antarctica, known as Operation High Jump. The expedition was under the overall command of Admiral Richard E. Byrd, no stranger to the Antarctic. This was a large undertaking involving 13 ships and over 4000 thousand men. The fleet departed from Norfolk, Virginia traveling through the Panama canal and then southward to their final destination. The trip through the ice pack was fraught with danger and forced the submarine that was part of the fleet to withdraw. The trip was a success meeting all of its scientific goals. The film is narrated by three Hollywood stars, all of whom served in the US Navy: Robert Taylor, Robert Montgomery and Van Heflin.
In 1946, the U.S. Navy launches "Operation Highjump" to explore and map the Antarctic region and, in the process, test men, ships and equipment against the harsh climate. Chester W. Nimitz, Chief of Naval Operations, directs the expedition. Three groups make up the expedition: The central land-plane group, headed by Rear-Admiral Richard E. Byrd, will explore and map the interior from a base in Little America, while two other groups will explore and map the eastern and western coasts. The teams must finish their work before the end of the brief Antarctic summer. In addition to scientific equipment and other supplies, the ships carry sled dogs to provide land transportation. At the equator, men and dogs who have never crossed the equator are initiated in humorous King Neptune ceremonies.
When strong storms hit the ships in the southern hemisphere, many sailors are injured and several seaplanes are lost. The rough seas prevent the central group from landing at Scott Island, but despite this setback, the men onboard celebrate Christmas with a traditional dinner and gifts. The central group now depends on an icebreaker to cut a path through the ice pack in the Ross Sea to the Bay of Whales and the base at Little America on the Ross Ice Shelf. Meanwhile, the western group has reached Peter Island. From there, seaplanes scout the coast, where they find explorer Robert Scott's former camp. The progress of the central group is hampered by ice, and the submarine accompanying the ships is caught between two ice flows. The icebreaker returns to free the submarine, which is sent home.
While the western group waits for the icebreaker's return, they observe and capture for further study penguins, seals and other Antarctic wildlife. When the central group reaches Little America, the explorers unload their equipment and, making use of the twenty-four-hour summer daylight, quickly build a tent city and airstrips. Admiral Byrd flies in on the first airplane, which lands perfectly, but the remaining planes must take off at night in order to beat an approaching storm. After the blizzard clears, ice is cleaned off the planes, and a man crawls down a shaft to an earlier base buried under the snow. The cold, dry air of Antarctica has perfectly preserved the supplies that were left behind. While mapping expeditions fly over the land, divers test cold-water survival suits in the frigid ocean. On flights from their base in the Bellany Islands, the eastern group spots Mt. Aramis, the only active volcano near the South pole, and near the Shakleton Ice Shelf, the explorers discover 500 miles of snowless land heated by warm water lakes, which they name Bunger's Oasis.
The short summer is ending, and the fleet near Little America is becoming frozen in the ice. After the fleet is freed by an icebreaker, it departs, leaving behind Byrd and some volunteers to continue explorations by air. During the eastern group's mapping of the Phantom Coast, mountains made of coal are discovered. A crew is lost during one flight, and after a search of two weeks, the survivors are found. Three men die in the crash and one, badly burned, loses his legs to frostbite. The icebreaker returns to pick up Byrd and his men, and the successful expedition returns home, having learned much about this largely unknown territory.

Alina Z shows how to prepare an easy recipe - EASY TIRAMISU BANANA TRIFLE
Recipe By CHRISTINA ROSS - LoveFed Dessert Book - www.Love-Fed.com
Yield: 2 mini trifles
Prep time: 30 minutes
This is my raw-vegan mash-up of two favorite European desserts: English trifle and Italian tiramisu. The result is a sophisticated dessert worthy of any fancy tabletop.
CREAM
1 c. cashews, soaked and drained
1⁄8 tsp. sea salt
1⁄4 c. almond milk
1⁄4 c. cold-brewed coffee or 1 tsp. coffee extract
1⁄4 c. maple syrup
1 tbsp. melted coconut oil
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. lemon juice
CHOCOLATE SAUCE DRIZZLE
1 tbsp. cacao powder
1 tbsp. maple syrup
1⁄4 tsp. vanilla extract
3 bananas
11/2 tsp. cacao powder, for garnish
To make the cream: Place the cashews, sea salt, almond milk, cold-brewed coffee, maple syrup, coconut oil, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a blender and blend until very creamy.
To make the chocolate sauce drizzle: Whisk the cacao powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl until smooth. Transfer to a squirt bottle, if you have one, or leave in the bowl until ready to use.
To assemble the trifle: Cut each of the bananas into 3 even sections. Slice each section in half lengthwise (you will have 18 total pieces of banana). Place 2 of the banana sections in the bottom of a 33⁄4x41⁄4" trifle glass or ramekin. Repeat in a second glass or ramekin. Squirt chocolate sauce (or drizzle with a spoon) along the rims of the glasses all the way around, reserving some for garnish. Next, add enough cream to cover the bananas. Layer another 2 bananas sections on top, then the cream.
Stand up the remaining 10 banana sections vertically around the sides of each glass (5 per glass), then pour in the cream to the top. Gently sift cacao powder on top and garnish with a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Serve immediately or let chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until ready to serve. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

"We humans spend a lot of time waiting in lines: People queue up for days in order to get their hands on the latest iPhone, or what feels like eons for a table at that hip new brunch place."
Contrary to expectations, life experiences better use of money than material items

"Despite knowing that buying life experiences will make them happier than buying material items, shoppers might continue to spend money on the latter because they mistakenly believe items are a better value, according to a San Francisco State University study published today. That belief, however, isn't accurate."
