The Persian Gulf was the focus of the 1980–1988 Iran-Iraq War, in which each side attacked the other's oil tankers. In 1991, the Persian Gulf again was the background for what was called the "Persian Gulf War" or the "Gulf War" when Iraq invaded Kuwait and was subsequently pushed back, despite the fact that this conflict was primarily a land conflict.
The Persian Gulf has many good fishing grounds, extensive coral reefs, and abundant pearl oysters, but its ecology has come under pressure from industrialization, and in particular, oil and petroleum spillages during wars in the region.
Historically and internationally known as the Persian Gulf, this body of water is sometimes controversially referred to as the Arabian Gulf or simply The Gulf by most Arab states, although neither of the latter two terms are recognized internationally. The name Gulf of Iran (Persian Gulf) is used by the International Hydrographic Organization.

U.S Navy Fires First Successful Laser Cannon in the Persian Gulf
The United States Navy has deployed and fired its first fully functional laser. The laser weapon system—or LaWS,—was fired from the USS Ponce in the first ever successful test of a military laser. During a series of live-fire tests, the weapon locked on to and destroyed multiple moving targets, including drones and other targets affixed to small boats. Also, the whole system is controlled via what looks suspiciously like an Xbox Controller. Rear Admiral Matthew Klunder, chief of naval research, told reporters at the Pentagon,
"This is the first time in recorded history that a directed energy weapons system has ever deployed on anything. A lot of people talk about it—we decided to go do it.”
The development of the project, cost the Navy at around $40 million, took seven years, and the weapon has an effective combat range of up to about a mile. It even comes with three different settings: distract, disable, and destroy. The laser weapons of the future are here and we want one.

Obama promises further military support for Persian Gulf allies
The US president has pledged further military support for the six Persian Gulf Arab states taking part in the US-Arab summit in Camp David.
Barack Obama says the U-S will work with its Arab allies to deter and confront threats to GCC territorial integrity. Obama noted that potential use of military force will be considered at the time of such threats to GCC member states. He also promised to work jointly with Arab allies to strengthen what he calls the moderate opposition in Syria who are fighting President Bashar Assad. The US president, however, once again stepped up anti-Iran rhetoric accusing Tehran of destabilizing the Middle-East region.

Kerry visits Persian Gulf to sell allies on Iran deal
After campaigning on Capitol Hill, Secretary of State John Kerry traveled to the Middle East to promote the Iran nuclear agreement. In Qatar, he suggested that a nuclear deal might change Iran's aggressive actions in neighboring states. But Kerry did not stop in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the pact. Judy Woodruff reports.

Yemen's fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi has called on the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council, involving six Arab states, to take military action against Ansarullah movement.
Hadi's foreign minister says the president also asked the UN to impose a no-fly zone over the country’s airspace to prevent the Ansarullah fighters known as Houthis from using the airports. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal warned of taking measures if Houthis do not end peacefully what he called their coup. On Sunday, Ansarullah leader, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi stressed that his forces will keep advancing south and called Hadi a puppet of foreign countries. Hadi resigned from his post as president in January. But after fleeing Sana’a to Aden, withdrew his resignation.

The Arab states of the Persian Gulf are the seven Arab states which border the Persian Gulf, namely Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Most of these nations are part of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.
Geographically, the Arabic-speaking Gulf is solely Eastern Arabia. The borders of the Gulf do not extend beyond Eastern Arabia. Hejaz, Najd and South Arabia are not part of the Gulf. The Arabs of Eastern Arabia speak a dialect known as Gulf Arabic. Most Saudis do not speak Gulf Arabic because most Saudis do not live in Eastern Arabia. There are only 200,000 Gulf Arabic speakers in Saudi Arabia, mostly in the coastal eastern region.

Dubai is located on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf and is one of the seven emirates that make up the country. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the only two emirates to have veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country's legislature.[5] The city of Dubai is located on the emirate's northern coastline and heads up the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. Dubai is to host World Expo 2020.[6]
Dubai has emerged as a global city and business hub of the Persian Gulf region.[7] It is also a major transport hub for passengers and cargo. By the 1960s Dubai's economy was based on revenues from trade and, to a smaller extent, oil exploration concessions, but oil was not discovered until 1966. Oil revenue first started to flow in 1969.[8] Dubai's oil revenue helped accelerate the early development of the city, but its reserves are limited and production levels are low: today, less than 5% of the emirate's revenue comes from oil.[9] The emirate's Western-style model of business drives its economy with the main revenues now coming from tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services.[10][11][12] Dubai has recently attracted world attention through many innovative large construction projects and sports events. The city has become symbolic for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings, in particular the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Dubai has been criticised for human rights violations concerning the city's largely South Asian workforce.[13] Dubai's property market experienced a major deterioration in 2008–2009 following the financial crisis of 2007–2008,[14] but is making a gradual recovery with help from neighbouring emirates.

Kerry says US to speed arms sales to Persian Gulf states after Iran deal
The US Secretary of State says Washington is ready to speed up arms sales to the members of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council as part of fresh security cooperation.
Kerry said the new security cooperation, which includes intelligence sharing, is part of steps planned after the nuclear conclusion with Iran. Kerry said the cooperation will be against terrorist groups such as the ISIL and what he called other destabilizing elements in the region. Kerry also accused Tehran of destabilizing the region, expressing hope that the nuclear conclusion will turn a new page in relations with Iran. He added Washington is now focused on the implementation of the nuclear conclusion with Iran. Meanwhile, Kerry called for a political solution in Yemen. He also urged all parties involved in the crisis to allow humanitarian organizations quick access to all conflict-hit regions.

Yemen's Amsarullah accuses some Persian Gulf Arab states of backing al-Qaeda
The leader of Yemen's Ansarullah movement has accused some Persian Gulf Arab states and local parties of supporting al-Qaeda militants in the country to prepare the ground for foreign occupation.
In a televised address, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said, however, Yemen has achieved victory over the foreign occupation project. Houthi stressed that Yemen is at the forefront of countries targeted by Takfiri forces. He said Takfiri activity is meant to justify QUOTE extending Western hegemony over the country. Yemen has been sinking in political turmoil since Abdu Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and his cabinet stepped down in January over rifts with Ansarullah movement. The fugitive former president is now in the southern port city of Aden. He is now seeking help from some regional countries including Saudi Arabia, to get some of his lost powers back.

Fugitive Hadi urges Persian Gulf Arab countries to intervene militarily in Yemen

Arab states of the Persian Gulf
Arab states of the Persian Gulf
