Fonseca Bay was discovered in 1522 by Gil Gonzalez de Avila, and named by him after his patron, Archbishop Juan Fonseca, the implacable enemy of Columbus.[1]
In 1849, E. G. Squier negotiated a treaty for the United States to build a canal across Honduras from the Caribbean Sea to the Gulf. Frederick Chatfield, the British commander in Central America, was afraid the American presence in Honduras would destabilize the British Mosquito Coast, and sent his fleet to occupy El Tigre Island at the entrance to the Gulf. Shortly thereafter, however, Squier demanded the British leave, since he had anticipated the occupation and negotiated the island's temporary cession to the United States. Chatfield could only comply.
All three countries—Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua—with coastline along the Gulf have been involved in a lengthy dispute over the rights to the Gulf and the islands located within. In 1992, a chamber of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decided the Land, Island and Maritime Frontier Dispute, of which the Gulf dispute was a part. The ICJ determined that El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua were to share control of the Gulf of Fonseca. El Salvador was awarded the islands of Meanguera and Meanguerita, while Honduras was awarded El Tigre Island.

Spanish/Nat
In a joint effort by the Salvadoran and U-S military, the poverty-stricken islands and coastline of the Gulf of Fonseca received much needed medical aid last week.
The region, which belongs to El Salvador, is home to some six thousand people, but only one clinic services the population.
The aid operation also included extensive medical training to give local people the skills to improve their own health system.
The U-S Navy, in collaboration with El Salvador, has invested over 35 million (m) U-S dollars in providing aid to the impoverished area.
The medical brigade of the Salvadoran army and medical experts from the Seventh Battalion of the country's Special Forces arrived here last week.
They were joined by 13 medical staff from the U-S military group and personnel from the U-S Departments of Health, Agriculture and Husbandry.
The 6 day operation ended on Monday.
The region comprising the islands of Meanguera, Conghaguita and Perico and the coastal area, Barrancones, is governed by El Salvador.
Although electricity and telephone cables reached the island in 1992, sanitary levels are poor.
Many inhabitants lack clean water and a proper drainage and sewage system is yet to be installed.
Most depend on fishing and small scale agriculture to make a living.
Poverty levels are high, and the incidence of chronic disease- especially among young children- is on the increase.
But with only one clinic and limited medical staff to meet the populations needs, islanders are forced to travel to the mainland- a two hour boat journey- to receive medical care.
The expedition was greeted with relief by local residents.

The aim of the operation was also to provide local people with the skills needed to be able to treat diseases locally.
Medical aid groups held discussion forums and gave lectures on preventative health care including dietary and food hygiene issues.
The expedition ended on Monday, and provided a variety of medical services, targeting young children, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups.
But the population as a whole all received general health and dental check ups.
Veterinary checks up were also carried out, and farmers given anti- parasitic drugs and vitamins to treat their livestock.
At the end of the operation local residents expressed their gratitude in a small ceremony where military officers were awarded medals for their efforts.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
"There is no other activity that could give us more pleasure than to help people, because it gives us immediate satisfaction."

The region's geographical location also makes it susceptible to natural disasters due to extreme weather conditions.
Disasters such as flooding and hurricanes can greatly increase the spread of disease if water supplies are contaminated.
The aid operation has therefore also been a useful training exercise for the Salvadoran military, in the event of a disaster occurring in the region in the future.

El Salvador, officially the Republic of El Salvador (Spanish: República de El Salvador, literally "Republic of The Savior"; Pipil: Kūskatan), is the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central America. The country's capital city and largest city is San Salvador. Important cultural and commercial centers for Central America on the whole include Santa Ana and San Miguel. El Salvador borders the Pacific Ocean on the south, and the countries of Guatemala to the west and Honduras to the north and east. Its easternmost region lies on the coast of the Gulf of Fonseca, opposite Nicaragua. As of 2013, El Salvador had a population of approximately 6,290,420 people, composed predominantly of Mestizos.
The colón was the official currency of El Salvador from 1892 to 2001, when it adopted the U.S. Dollar.
In 2010 El Salvador ranked twelfth among Latin American countries in terms of the Human Development Index and fourth in Central America (behind Panama, Costa Rica, and Belize), due in part to ongoing rapid industrialization.
The indigo plant (called añil in Spanish), which yielded a rich blue dye, was El Salvador's most important crop during the colonial period; its place was taken by coffee in the second half of the 19th century. Between 1871 and 1927 coffee production so dominated the country's economy that it was known as the Coffee Republic, and by the early 20th century, coffee accounted for 90 percent of the country's export earnings. Its importance to the economy began to decline after the Great Depression; by 1987 it was responsible for half of export earnings, and by 2004 coffee production accounted for only 7 percent.
Civilization in El Salvador dates to its settlement by the Native American Pipil people, Nahua speaking groups who migrated from Mexico in the centuries before the European conquest and occupied the central and western regions. They called their territory Cuzcatlan, a Pipil word meaning The Place of Precious Jewels, hispanicized as Cuzcatlán. The people of El Salvador today are variably referred to as Salvadoran, while the term Cuzcatleco is commonly used to identify someone of Salvadoran heritage.
In pre-Columbian times the country was also inhabited by various other Native American peoples, including the Lenca, a Chilanga Lencan-speaking group who settled in the eastern highlands. Cuzcatlan was the larger domain until the Spanish conquest. Since El Salvador resided on the eastern edge of the Mayan Civilization, the origins of many of El Salvador's ruins are controversial. However, it is widely agreed that Mayans likely occupied the areas around Lago de Guija and Cihuatan. Other ruins such as Tazumal, Joya de Ceren and San Andres may have been created by the Pipil or the Mayan or possibly both.
In 1520 the indigenous population of the territory had been reduced by 80% due to the smallpox epidemic that affected the Mesoamerican area. The Spanish Admiral Andrés Niño led an expedition to Central America and disembarked on Meanguera island, which he named Petronila, in the Gulf of Fonseca, on May 31, 1522. Thereafter he discovered Jiquilisco Bay on the mouth of Lempa River. This was the first known visit by Spaniards to what is now Salvadoran territory.
In 1524, after participating in the conquest of Mexico, Spanish Conquistadors led by Pedro de Alvarado and his brother Gonzalo crossed the Rio Paz (Peace River) from the area comprising the present Republic of Guatemala into what is now the Republic of El Salvador. The Spaniards were disappointed to discover that the indigenous Pipil people had no gold or jewels like those they had found in Guatemala or Mexico, but recognized the richness of the verdant land's volcanic soil.

Hospedaje 'Los Cocos' is spotgoedkoop: 7,5 US $ voor 2 personen.
