STORYLINE
Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Husseini al-Sistani, left the southern city of Basra on Thursday and was headed to Najaf in a bid to end weeks of fighting between U.S. forces and Iraqi rebels there, witnesses said.
Travelling in an armoured car, al-Sistani left the city in a 30-vehicle convoy of sport utility vehicles.
The convoy had to slow down near Nasiriyah where crowds of Sistani followers were waiting to cheer their leader. Some supporters held banners promising "to achieve any order of Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani".
The convoy came to stand-still when Shia followers started to run between the cars looking for Sistani's armoured vehicle. The convoy later continued its journey to Najaf.
Al-Sistani, 75, returned to Iraq on Wednesday after spending several weeks in London for medical treatment.
The cleric wields enormous influence among Shiite Iraqis and his return could play a crucial role in stabilising the Najaf crisis, which has worsened in his absence.
Najaf Governor Adnan al-Zurufi declared a 24 hour cease-fire from the time al-Sistani arrives in Najaf to give the militants loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr a chance to decide whether to accept the peace plan.
"Immediately after that, the operation will start again if the militia disagree on what Ayatollah al-Sistani said," he said.
He also said that Iraqi and U.S. forces would temporarily pull back from positions near the revered Imam Ali Shrine to allow for peace efforts.
The 360 kilometre (220 miles) journey from Basra to Najaf could take five hours, as thousands of supporters are concentrating on the road, hoping to have a glimpse of their leader.
Al-Sistani had called for Iraqis to march to the holy city of Najaf on Thursday, but al-Khafaf said the demonstrators should stop on the edge of the holy city and wait for al-Sistani to arrive and give them instructions before entering.

STORYLINE:
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Saturday, making his first trip to meet with Italian troops based in the southern city of Nasiriyah.
The premier flew in early on Saturday, greeted surprised Italian troops, joined them for lunch, then left the country a few hours later.
Some 2-thousand 900 Italian armed forces are based in Nasiriyah. They are working on reconstruction projects in the southern Iraqi city, but as violence has engulfed the country, they have been involved in combat.
On Tuesday, Italian troops in Nasiriyah clashed with militiamen, leaving 15 Iraqis dead and 12 Italians wounded, but has largely calmed since.
An Italian soldier filmed Berlusconi''s surprise visit and the footage in this package are his pictures.
Berlusconi - wearing casual clothes and a baseball cap - chatted with soldiers.
The Italian soldiers hadn''t known about his visit on the eve of Easter Sunday.
The trip was kept secret for security reasons.
Berlusconi, a conservative ally of U.S. President George W. Bush, supported the US-led war and agreed to send troops after the conflict.
On November 12, a suicide truck bomb attack on Italian forces in Nasiriyah killed 19 Italians - the nation''s single worst military loss since World War II.

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Lieutenant Colonel Stefano Farrace, Military doctor:
"(Q: Did you see some tears in their faces, in their eyes?) Not today, yesterday yes, they were much better probably because they were coming home and so you know, their feeling was improving."

STORYLINE:
A military plane flew home a first group of wounded troops on Friday after a suicide bombing that tore apart an Italian base in Iraq this week and killed 18 Italians - a strike that horrified Italians whose military had previously been spared bloodshed there.
Senior military officials greeted some 20 wounded Italians on their arrival at Rome's Ciampino airport, which was broadcast on state television.
One survivor limped off the plane on crutches, while others appeared with bandages on their faces or were loaded into ambulances.
The bodies of the dead were being shipped home in brown wooden coffins on Saturday.
They will be laid out at the central Roman Vittoriano palace on Monday, with the public allowed to view the coffins over 11 hours.
The nation, in deep mourning since Wednesday's attack in the southern Iraqi town of Nasiriyah, is prepared for more distressing hours next week, when the state funerals occur on Tuesday at a Rome basilica.
That event will also be broadcast live on state television.
The Colosseum will turn off its lights on Tuesday, schools will observe a minute of silence, shops will close briefly, workers will pause for 10 minutes - even movie theatres will keep their marquees dark that day as a sign of respect.
The attack killed 12 paramilitary Carabinieri police, four army soldiers and two civilians.
Another Italian was wounded and has been declared brain dead.
Fourteen non-Italians were also killed, while more than 80 were wounded.
Italy's government has stressed that it will not retreat from its mission. And for the time being, Italians - who largely opposed the war in Iraq - seemed more determined to stay in the country.
During a speech on Friday, Premier Silvio Berlusconi defended the government's decision to send troops to Iraq, but said he had been opposed to the war and tried to persuade US President George W. Bush to change his mind.
This came as a surprise because Berlusconi has been a staunch ally of the US administration in the conflict.
Berlusconi said he also urged allies to "quickly build a system of self-government" in Iraq.
The Italian premier, while supporting Washington's military campaign against Saddam Hussein, did not send combat soldiers.
Instead, Italy contributed troops after Baghdad fell to help in the reconstruction, and now has a 2,300-strong contingent in Iraq.

"There were also a number of incidents last night in Nasiriyah. There was a report yesterday at 1600 that approximately 40 personnel carrying weapons had gathered near two of the bridges crossing the Euphrates. These forces attacked the CPA building and patrols in and around the city starting at 1930 last night. The CPA building was attacked by mortars, RPGs and small arms fire five times between 7.30 pm and 0230 in the morning. Coalition patrols were attacked three times by small arms fire as they manoeuvred to secure the building. Nonetheless by 0200, reinforcement coalition troops had entered and secured the CPA compound. By 0300 the coalition forces had reestablished control of the city. There were no coalition casualties as a result of these attacks."
6. Kimmitt and Senor walk out of briefing
STORYLINE:
Overnight fighting ebbed early on Saturday in the southern city of Nasiriyah, where gunmen believed to be loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr had attacked the local headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition.
Shooting lasted all night until 6 a.m. around the coalition building, where some international staffers and four Italian journalists were trapped, said US spokesman Andrea Angeli, who was among those in the building.
Italian forces and Filipino security guards in the compound fought militiamen who fired mortars, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades from the southeast and northeast parts of the city, Angeli said by telephone.
In Nasiriya, calm had returned but there was a strong Iraqi police presence on routes in and out of the city, and armed militia men were seen on the streets.
Speaking to reporters in Baghdad, chief military spokesman in Iraq Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt said reinforcement coalition troops eventually entered and secured the coalition compound and had had reestablished control of the city by dawn.
"There were no coalition casualties as a result of these attacks" he said.

STORYLINE
Mourners gathered in Baqouba on Thursday to continue burying the victims of Wednesday's deadly suicide bombing.
Hundreds marched behind coffins shooting in the air and wailing.
Scores of people died in the bombing which targeted the town's police station but also claimed the lives of passersby.
In Baiji, insurgents attacked a supply truck which was left in flames by the town's main highway on Thursday morning.
Convoys of trucks have been the regular target of insurgents over the past year.
Residents said that the convoy had had a US military escort.
In Baghdad, a Bradley Fighting Vehicle was overturned on the road to the airport in the west of the city.
Soldiers at the scene said the armoured vehicle had suffered mechanical problems, but that no one had been injured.
Military vehicles are often targeted by militants on the road.
Meanwhile, Muqtada al-Sadr's al-Mahdi Army took up positions in Nasiriyah on Thursday after disagreements.
Masked and armed members of the Shia militia group directed traffic and stood on street corners toting RPGs and rifles.
A spokesman for al-Sadr, Awis al-Kafaji, told APTN that the al-Sadr office was attacked on Wednesday and he accused Iraqi police and Italian Coalition of cooperating in the attack.
He said this was why al-Sadr's militia were on the streets on Thursday.
There were reports of gunfire between Italian troops and about 30 militants near Nasiriyah, but no injuries.
An Italian Defence Ministry spokesman in Rome, Captain Massimo Polacci, confirmed the reports but said he had no details.
Arab television stations reported clashes between Italians and members of the Al-Mahdi army, but Italian officials did not identify the militants.
