The exact origins of the name, "Kurd", are unclear. Reynolds believes that the term Kurd is most likely related to the ancient term Qardu. The common root of Kurd and Qardu is first mentioned in a Sumerian tablet from the third millennium B.C. as the "land of Kar-da." Qardu is etymologically related to the Assyrian term Urartu corresponding to Ararat. According to Asatrian, the most reasonable explanation of this ethnonym is its possible connections with the Cyrtii (Cyrtaei)

"It will strengthen our position and will be a powerful weapon in our hands," he said."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Hundreds of thousands of Kurds were murdered under the tyrannical regime of Saddam Hussein. Some four thousand Kurdish villages were destroyed. Betrayed again and again by the nations of the world, the Kurds were as decimated as any people in history. Then came the Kurdish Miracle, that combination of ancient wisdom and modern economic genius that is now making the Kurdish homeland one of the most prosperous places on earth. Kurds Assert Control of Hasakah: The Battle for Rojava (Dispatch 3)
The northeastern city of Hasakah is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse in Syria. Its population of Kurds, Sunni Arabs, and Christians was until recently politically divided between equal zones of Kurdish and Assad regime control. Immediately following the fall of the strategic border town of Tal Abyad from Islamic State (IS) fighters to Kurdish YPG forces in June, however, IS hit back with a sudden shock offensive on the regime-held half of Hasakah, causing regime forces to crumble in a matter of days.
As the Syrian army and loyalist militias relinquished control to IS, the YPG entered the battle, first encircling IS positions and then launching a ground offensive supported by pounding coalition airstrikes. Despite IS using their elite forces in the offensive, the combination of airstrikes and YPG ground troops proved too much and IS fled its recent gains in the city, leaving behind only ruined buildings and mangled bodies.
With IS pushed back from Hasakah's southern outskirts, VICE News follows the YPG as they become masters of areas of the city that until a few weeks ago had always been held by the Syrian regime. With government forces and the YPG facing off across this disputed territory, the future status of Hasakah is now unclear.

In the disputed area on the edges of IS-controlled territory are the last outposts of Kurdish resistance to IS. With incredible access this report meets the hardened fighters and embittered refugees among them.
Since the start of the Syrian war, nearly 13.6 million people have been displaced, crossing bridges and passing through checkpoints at great peril to escape the violence. Mosul is one of the towns to recently fall under IS control. "IS controls everyone's daily routine. Everything you hear about them is true", says a man who fled the town. He has made it to Erbil, recently recaptured by Kurd forces, who are waging a bloody war with Islamic State to protect their land. Gunfights, car bombs and aerial attacks are a daily reality for the soldiers and the displaced who occupy this zone, mere kilometres from the waving flags of the Islamic State.

Out of the chaos of Syria's civil war, Kurdish leftists have forged a radical, multi-ethnic mini-state. But with ISIS attacking them at every opportunity, how long can this idealistic social experiment last?
"It's not about religion here. We protect all sects" says a Kurdish soldier. Made up of enclaves across Northern Syria, Rojava is built on the principles of equality, providing sanctuary to a spectrum of minorities as well as refugees on the run from ISIS. Described by Aldar Xalil, member of the Rojava Government Council, as a “consensus based, democratic way of life”, the state enjoys a political liberty unfamiliar to other areas of the Middle East. Here, no religious restrictions are imposed on public behaviour and women are encouraged to engage in running municipalities and combat. But a close association with the PKK, a Turkish militant group with a similar ideology yet brutal past, has earned Rojava inhabitants the scornful label of “terrorists” and a cautionary approach from international players. As YPG spokesmen Redur Khalil explains, however, the national army of Syrian Kurdistan could be key in the fight against ISIS: “for the American and European plans to succeed, they will need allies on the ground”.

The Kurds are one of the world's largest peoples without a state, making up sizable minorities in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. Their history is marked by marginalization and persecution. Yet some Kurds may be on the verge of achieving their century-old quest for independence in a Middle East undergoing the convulsions of Syria's civil war, Iraq's destabilization, and conflict with the self-proclaimed Islamic State.

Rand Paul: I will arm the Kurds and give them Kurdish State
Kurdish aspirations for statehood are being boosted by recent territorial gains.
Kurds are the most effective group standing up to ISIL.
Kurdish fighters are again trying to fend off an attack by ISIL fighters on the border town of Kobane.
And they recently captured Tal Abyad, a strategic border town which ISIL used to bring foreign fighters and supplies to areas they control inside Syria.
The Kurds' fight is driven by their dream of a homeland of their own. They are scattered across the region and the world. Their quest for their own nation is boosted by the continuing wars in Iraq and Syria.
What challenges are they facing? And what risks?

Origin of Kurds & History of Struggle in Iraq (Documentary & Archive Clips)
Kurds are a group related to Europeans in Linguistics and DNA. During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Treaty of Sevres outlined the creation of a Kurdish Nation in present day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. ( Due to Kemal Ataturk's military revival and formation of modern Turkey, Treaty of Lausanne supersedes Sevres and failed to mention Kurdistan. While today's Kurdish parties formed post-WWII, the Kurdish struggle for Independence began long before. Kurdistan Region has historically hosted wars between the Iranian Empires and Roman Empires, and the Ottoman Empire. During Ottoman Empire and Safavid Empire, The Kizilbash (occupying borders between Iran and Turkey) and of probably Kurdish origin, identified with the Safavid Empire and rebelled against the Ottomans.
This video covers the identity and origin of the Kurdish people, and their struggle for independence in Iraq dating back to Mustafa Barzani and the Pahlavi Dynasty. Including during the Iran-Iraq war, and Chemical Weapons attack on Halabja.
Ethnically:
"Discoveries from Kurdish Looms" by Robert D. Biggs, Mary & Leigh Block Gallery: "Ethnically the Kurds are an Iranian people
Iraq After the Muslim Conquest p.265: '...Kurdish presence in Iraq was merely an extension of their presence in Western Iran'
Iraq After the Muslim Conquest p.265: 'Iranian groups in foothills/mountains of Zagros were called Kurds at that time'
E. J. van Donzel: "Kurds are Iranian people who live mainly at the junction of Turkey, Iran Iraq, Syria & Transcaucasia".
John Limbert: "..The historic road from Baghdad to Hamadan and beyond divides the Kurds from their Iranian cousins, the Lurs"
Case of the Bronze Age by Carl C. Lamberg-Karlovsky:
Iranian people belong to the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) community which is ancestral to the Celtic, Italic (including Romance), Germanic, Baltic, Slavic, Indo-Iranian, Albanian, Armenian, Greek, and Tocharian languages.
There is an agreement that the PIE community split into 2 major groups. One headed west for Europe and became speakers of Indo-European (all the languages of modern Europe save for Basque, Hungarian, and Finnish) while others headed east for Eurasia to become Indo-Iranians.
The Indo-Iranians were a community that spoke a common language prior to their branching off into the Iranian and Indo-Aryan languages.
Iranian refers to various Iranian people such as Persian, Laki, Luri, Baluchi, and Dari speakers.
Indo-Aryan: Sanskrit, Hindi and its many related languages.

"The president of the Kurdish region of northern Iraq has asked his parliament to prepare for a referendum on independence, potentially paving the way for the break-up of the country.
Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, called on parliament on Thursday to form an independent electoral commission that would start organising a referendum on independence for the semi-autonomous region.
"It will strengthen our position and will be a powerful weapon in our hands," he said."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Syrian Kurds reclaim Tal Abiyad in country's north
Syrian Kurds have added the town of Tal Abiyad to an expanding area of territory they control in northern Syria.
The town, along the Syria/Turkey border had been under ISIL control for 14 months - until U.S airstrikes helped the Kurds force ISIL out.
Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from the Turkey-Syria border.

The Kurds of Kurdistan, yesterday and today - Conversation with Stephen Mansfield
Bestselling author, Stephen Mansfield, The Miracle of the Kurds: A Remarkable Story of Hope Reborn in Northern Iraq gives a primer on Kurdish history and what's happening there now.
"When America went to war what they wanted Iraq to be was democratic, pro-Western, oriented towards human rights, non-militarist ... you have all of that in Iraqi Kurdistan."

Kurds killed ISIS rats in villages in Rojava in June 2015
Tal Abyad has been captured by a Kurdish-FSA coalition, and ISIS has been driven out. So what does it mean for the players involved?

ISIS has lost Tal Abyad, Syria. Now what? (Video via People's Protection Units)
A joint force — of both Kurdish People's Protection Units and Arabic Free Syrian Army fighters — called Euphrates Volcano has successfully driven ISIS militants out of a key Syrian-Turkish border town.
YPG's media account declared the Tal Abyad liberated within 24 hours after the siege began. Footage of FSA and Kurdish battalions celebrating at Turkey's border and erecting the FSA flag was posted online not long after.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the deaths of 40 ISIS militants and said the rest fled into southern and western villages. The YPG is now attempting to clear the area of landmines.
The city's fall concluded weeks of gradual progress by Kurds and FSA forces from two regions, or cantons, in northern Syria — Kobane to the west and Jazira to east.
Up until now, the two regions were isolated from one another. Taking Tal Abyad means Kurds have now created what is essentially a bridge between the two cantons. This brings two advantages for the Kurds: Fighters can now travel freely between both cantons without having to go into Turkey, and second, Kurdish Peshmerga forces from Iraq can now theoretically reach farther into Syria if the need ever arises.
The YPG-FSA forces owed their advancement in part to U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, which helped pave the way for fighters to push ISIS out of one village after another. (Video via Euphrates Volcano)
The city's capture marks ISIS' most significant defeat since it lost the Iraqi city of Tikrit in April. But this loss may be a much bigger strategic blow to the self-declared caliphate.
That's because Tal Abyad served as one of ISIS' vital links to the outside world. Being less than 60 miles from the de-facto ISIS capital of Raqqa, Syria, it was the most direct route for both foreign fighters and supplies to reach the organization.
The group still has another border crossing to the west, but only a river separates the city from the Kurdish-dominated Kobane canton, and the crossing is much farther away from Raqqa than the prior crossing near Tal Abyad.
The activist group called Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, which reports covertly from within Raqqa, said earlier ISIS was digging trenches around the city as well as urging its people to stockpile supplies for a potential siege. (Video via Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently)
But while the liberation of ISIS-held territory up until now has included a mix of Arab and Kurdish populations, villages south toward Raqqa are primarily Arab. That may pose a problem. (Video via Euphrates Volcano)
Although the two share a common enemy, Kurdish progression into Arab land has the potential to cause friction between the groups if Arabs perceive Kurds are pushing them out of their homeland. (video via Euphrates Volcano)

President of Iraqi Kurdistan: 'We don't need boots on the ground'
In interview with i24news, Massoud Barzani says Kurds require arms to continue battling IS
Iraq's Kurdish forces need international help to reinforce their military equipment and weaponry as part of their ongoing battle against the Islamic State, but do not require a ground operation from the US-led coalition, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan said.
In an interview slated to be aired on i24news Monday, Massoud Barzani thanked the international coalition for its help so far in the battle against Islamist groups in the region.
The peshmerga have emerged as a key partner for the coalition in its campaign to “degrade and destroy” the extremist group, which they have driven back in northern Iraq with the help of airstrikes.
"We want to thank them and express our gratitude," Barzani said. "Everything that has been done until today is exceptional, but what we need and what we expect has not yet come to pass."
"I am referring especially to the issue of equipping the peshmerga forces on the ground with the kinds of weapon systems that we need in order to carry out a ground operation," he added, noting that the Kurds did not however require the support of foreign troops.

Commander Sirwan Barzani said. The Iraqi government considers the peshmerga merely a regional force and controls their funding, he says. In recent months, Baghdad hasn’t given them much money or weaponry, and it’s even imposed strict salary caps for the peshmerga. The New York Times reported last month (http://goo.gl/LOMaz3) that Commander Sirwan Barzani had dipped into his own personal funds to provide cars, food, and weapons for his troops.

Kurdish Singer ready to risk it all for Kurdistan independence
Kurdish singer Helly Luv ready to 'Risk it All' for independence
Kurdish pop singer Helly Luv says she will not be put off by death threats from Iraqi Islamist militants since release of her first music video but, drawing on its title, insists she will "Risk It All" to help a push for an independent Kurdistan.
Iraqi-born Luv, 25, has seen her video rack up more than 2.5 million views on YouTube since its release in February; but she has faced criticism for what some see as provocative imagery in the clip accompanying the modern mix of dance, hip-hop and traditional Middle Eastern music.
Luv said the video, which includes exploding petrol bombs, backing dancers with AK-47 rifles, and the singer dancing in a mid-thigh silver dress atop a citadel, represents the Kurdish spirit and struggle for an independent state.
"There were death threats from many Islamic groups... it was a really hard time for me," Luv said in an interview in Arbil, the autonomous Kurdistan region's capital. "(But) my whole message is that, Kurdish people, we need to risk everything for our dreams and fight for our country."
Iraqi Kurdistan's population of roughly 5 million people has enjoyed a degree of independence from Baghdad since the end of the first Gulf War in the early 1990s.
But the Kurds are now closer than ever to leaving Iraq altogether, with Massoud Barzani, leader of their autonomous region, calling on his parliament to ready a referendum on independence after the latest violence in the country.
Critics argue that Kurdish leaders' actions could lead to broader chaos in Iraq and beyond its borders, promoting rebellions in Kurdish areas of neighbouring states.Luv's mother was a Kurdish 'peshmerga' fighter before the family emigrated during the Iran-Iraq War.
"You can see in Kurdistan right now that people don’t want war, we have been through so much already," Luv said. "We have fought so much to get this freedom, so we're not going to let nobody take it away."
Her management team declined to say whether any of the death threats she had received came from the Islamic State, the group previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), saying they did not want to give any of the groups or individuals publicity.
The Islamic State's lightning takeover of the northern city of Mosul and advance towards Baghdad stirred the latest crisis in Iraq, and saw the autonomous Kurdish Regional Government expand its borders and take over oil areas as Iraqi military forces retreated.
Luv recently visited Kurdish peshmerga forces that have been involved in skirmishes with the Islamic State.
Photos on her Facebook page show her wearing an old-style peshmerga uniform, red and black scarf and aviator sunglasses, standing before ranks of black-uniformed Kurdish troops.

A Syrian Kurdish female combatant, who appeared on a BBC report in September, shot herself with a last bullet during fighting with militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) last week, according to media reports.
Ceylan Ozalp, 19, was reportedly surrounded by ISIS fighters near the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobane also known as Ain al-Arab. After she run out of ammunition Ozalp said “goodbye” over the radio and spent her last bullet on killing herself.
The reports of her suicide, which follows the beheading of seven men and three women by ISIS in Kobane earlier this week, took social media by storm and appeared in several Turkish news websites such as the daily Radikal.
But other reports suggested Ozalp, also known as Diren –which means “resist” in Turkish, never left the northern Syrian town of Jezaa, which is still under the Kurdish control, according to International Business Times.
Al Arabiya News Channel could not independently verify the authenticity of the report on her suicide.
During her interview with the BBC last month, Ozalp said: “We’re not scared of anything…We’ll fight to the last. We’d rather blow ourselves up than be captured by IS (ISIS).”
“When they see a woman with a gun, they’re so afraid they begin to shake. They portray themselves as tough guys to the world. But when they see us with our guns they run away. They see a woman as just a small thing. But one of our women is worth a hundred of their men,” Ozalp told the BBC.
Like Ozalp, many Syrian Kurdish women have joined the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), an offshoot of the guerrilla group, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Pictures of these Syrian Kurdish female combatants carrying their Kalashnikovs, or those of their Kurdish Iraqi counterparts - the Peshmergettes - stand out as a striking anomaly in the region’s often male-dominated conflicts.
Several reports accuse ISIS of using female hostages as sex-slaves, often citing stories of Yazidi women – or other minorities – being married off to ISIS fighters.
The United Nations last week said ISIS has committed mass killings, kidnapped women and girls and used them as sex slaves and employed children as fighters, in systematic violations that may amount to war crimes.

In a two-week offensive, Syrian Kurdish fighters of the YPG (People's Protection Units) recaptured dozens of villages and towns from Islamic State militants. It's one of the few successful anti-IS operations, as the militant group continues to take ground elsewhere in Syria and in neighboring Iraq. VOA Kurdish Service reporter Zana Omer is on the frontlines in Tal Shamiran, where the YPG are getting help from America, both in the air, and on the ground. Robert Raffaele narrates.

With ISIS all over the news, it's easy to forget that there are many more groups in Iraq fighting for control. One of these groups of people are the Kurds and they're starting to become a force to be reckoned with. Who are they and what do they want in Iraq?

Ethnically:

We had the opportunity to sit down with Jordan Matson as he travels back to the U.S. to petition congress for more support for the Kurdish people in Syria and Iraq. We're going to be conducting more videos like this moving forward, to allow the public to hear the truth about what is really going on overseas without a mainstream media twist. Thank you for helping us kick this series off Jordan.
