President Barack Obama authorised airstrikes Thursday when the Islamic state militant group advanced on Irbil, in northeaster Iraq, where US military trainers are stationed.
In contrast to Washington's decision to invade Iraq more than a decade ago, the authorisation of military action against the Islamic State group were widely welcomed by Iraqi and Kurdish officials.

Final preparations before the race begins.
Runners register with officials for the Irbil six kilometre race.
The event has been set up by the Irbil Marathon organisation, together with several local NGOs, to mark the UN's International Day of Peace.
"We do celebrate and remember this event every year. Either by organising a race or by organising music concerts," says Sartip Fareeq, race organiser.
"This day is very important to us and we would like the whole world to remember it and to implement it every day so we can all live in peace," he adds.
Around 500 runners gather at the starting line in Sami Abdulrahman Park.
But the race doesn't begin as planned with many setting off before the starting signal is given.
The route takes them out onto the streets of Irbil.
Peace is a poignant reason for the people of this region to enter the race.
The Kurdish Peshmerga forces have been defending the borders of the Northern Kurdish region of Iraq against the Islamic State group for over a year now.
Rawand Ahmed is the first to pass the finish line in a time of 24 minutes and 50 seconds.
The 29-year-old has ambitions to enter the Iraqi championships.
"I feel very happy that in Kurdistan's capital Irbil, a marathon like this is organised for the sake of peace. I hope that peace will be established in Kurdistan," Ahmed says.
Mohammed Yawer - who is a Peshmerga - finishes in third place.
"I'm very happy and proud that I, as a member of the Peshmerga sports club, participated in a marathon for International Peace Day. I hope they will repeat the event and that it will be organised in all the towns of Kurdistan," he says.
Yawer's finishing time is 26:49.

A suicide truck bomber crashed into the offices of a Kurdish political party in northern Iraq on Sunday, killing at least 50 people and wounding scores, including a mayor, officials said.
It was the second suicide attack in Kurdish areas of the north in four days.
A parked car bomb also exploded near a market in central Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 17 Iraqis, police said.
The 10:30 a.m. (06:30GMT) suicide truck bomb attack in Makhmur, 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Irbil, badly damaged the office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) of Massoud Barzani, leader of the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq.
Makhmur is just south of the autonomous Kurdish-controlled areas, but it has a substantial Kurdish population.
The blast also killed the police chief and damaged the mayor's office, officials said.
Ziryan Othman, the health minister of the Kurdish regional government, said at least 50 people were killed and 115 were wounded, including the city's mayor, Abdul Rahman Delaf, who also is a prominent Kurdish writer, and the director of the KDP office.
Cars were charred and crushed by the blast, with some flipped over.
Most of the small KDP building appeared to have been destroyed, reduced to a pile of bricks.
Other buildings had walls blown out.
A group of people hurriedly pulled what appeared to be a dead body out of a demolished car.
Many of the 115 injured were brought to a hospital in Irbil.
Wounded men with bandages on their heads and arms wandered the halls, while doctors worked on a patient.
Outside, security guards closed the hospital to visitors and read a list containing the names of the wounded who had been admitted.
In Baghdad, a parked car exploded near a popular market in the centre of the city on Sunday, killing at least 17 people and wounding 46, police said.
The blast occurred at 2:45 p.m. (10:45GMT) on the Wathba Square near the Sadriyah market, one of the main commercial areas in the capital.
AP Television footage showed a crater in the ground filled with debris, splintered wood, metal and a tire.
A white truck appeared to be crumpled by the blast.

Convoy of Peshmerga fighters leaves Irbil en route for Kobani

Dozens of Iraq's Kurdish peshmerga fighters will fly to Turkey on Tuesday and from there cross into the Syrian border town of Kobani to help fellow Kurds fight Muslim militants, a spokesman for the Kurdish force said.
A large peshmerga convoy with heavy weapons was seen driving through Irbil on Tuesday afternoon, heading towards the Iraqi Kurdish area of Dohuk.
The convoy was moving by land and it was not immediately clear if the fighters had left or would leave on a plane, and the convoy would drive to Turkey.
Turkey, which has riled Kurdish leaders and frustrated Washington by refusing to allow fighters or weapons into Kobani, said last week it would help Iraqi Kurdish fighters cross into Syria.
The unprecedented deployment will provide much-needed boots on the ground in Kobani, although it is not clear whether the fighters will be allowed to carry enough weapons to make an impact.
A Kurdish official from Kobani told The Associated Press that they have no confirmation that peshmerga fighters were to arrive on Tuesday.
He added that the peshmerga command might have direct contact with the Syrian Kurdish force known as the Peoples' Protection Units, or YPG, and for that reason Kurdish politicians in Syria are not aware of the movement.

The first pictures of Saddam Hussein's surprise attack on the Kurdish town of Irbil in Northern Iraq show Iraqi soldiers fighting alongside troops from the Kurdish faction, the K-D-P. (Kurdish Democratic Party)
Iraq said it launched the offensive to help the K-D-P overcome their rivals, the P-U-K (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) which Baghdad claims were being aided by Iran.
Iraq says it has now started withdrawing its troops from Irbil.
There was an air of jubilation as Iraqi soldiers and Kurdish troops from the K-D-P launched their attack on the Kurdish stronghold of Irbil in Northern Iraq.
In a convoy cobbled together with military vehicles, cars and trucks - the troops poured into the outskirts of Irbil.
Their ground attack was supported by a massive artillery barrage which pounded the city.
Reports from the city said that shells thudded into its main power station, cutting off electricity supplies within hours of the start of the offensive.
Water supplies were apparently cut as well as telephone connections.
One building that took a hammering in the assault was the P-U-K government building.
The P-U-K and the K-D-P are fierce rivals and the attack has now given the K-D-P the upper hand.
Reports say there have been hundreds of casualties.
The Kurdish safe haven was established by the U.S.-led allied forces after the 1991 Gulf War to protect the ethnic Kurds from Saddam Hussein after their failed uprising against him.

A series of bombings has rocked Irbil, the capital of Iraq's autonomous province of Kurdistan, killing six members of the security services.
Irbil is in a stable part of Iraq and the region has not witnessed such attacks in the past six years.
A central government spokesman said the violence could be linked to fighting between jihadists and Kurd in Syria.
Meanwhile, at least 25 people were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a Shia Muslim mosque south of Baghdad.
The blast is reported to have brought down the roof of the mosque in Mussayab, and bodies are feared to be trapped in the debris.
The attack took place as a funeral was under way for a man killed by militants a day earlier, said Reuters news agency.
Sectarian violence has surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.
Both Sunni and Shia places of worship have been targeted in recent months.
'Bombers killed'
At least 36 people were reported wounded in Sunday's bombings in Irbil, which targeted the security forces HQ and the interior ministry.
Reports described a car bomber who rammed a checkpoint leading to a complex housing the interior ministry and a number of security agencies.
A short while later - as emergency services arrived - another bomber struck driving an explosive-rigged ambulance, and gunmen on foot also attacked.
TV images showed black smoke rising high above the city and emergency vehicles racing to the scene, which was sealed off by security services.
"We were inside the building when there was a huge explosion outside, and when we tried to go out to see what happened it was crowded, and there was shouting everywhere," said Farhan Samed Kamil, an asayesh member who lost two fingers in the attack.
"After a while there was a second explosion. That's all I remember," he told AFP news agency from hospital.
A statement reportedly published on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) website cited witnesses as saying five would-be suicide bombers had been killed before they were able to blow themselves up. Other official reports suggested four militants had been killed.
Nozad Hadi, the governor of Irbil province, told AFP news agency that the victims were members of the Kurdish "asayesh" security services.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague arrived in the Iraqi city of Irbil on Friday for talks with Kurdish Regional President, Massoud Barzani.
Speaking during a joint news conference at the Salahuddin resort, Hague urged Iraq's political leaders to form a new inclusive government that represents all the components of the Iraqi people.
He said it was the only way to bring peace and unity to Iraq, and to deal with Sunni militants who have seized large swathes of territory.
"We hope everyone, Shia, Sunni and Kurds will join in making that happen," he said.
The British Foreign Secretary has already met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who is fighting to keep his job, with his former Shiite allies and even key patron Iran exploring alternatives in the face of Iraq's worst crisis since US troops withdrew at the end of 2011.
Hague's visit follows US Secretary of State John Kerry, who promised "intense and sustained" US support for Iraq, but said the divided country would only survive if its leaders took urgent steps to bring it together.
With Iraq's bitterly divided sects focused on self-interests, Barzani has vowed to maintain control of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, seized by Kurdish forces, ostensibly to defend it from the Islamic State fighters.

Erbil International Airport (IATA: EBL, ICAO: ORER), is the main airport of Erbil city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Erbil International Airport is centrally located on the Silk Road of the Airways. Following the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to transform Erbil's former military base into a modern civil aviation airport to serve as a major gateway to the world. Erbil International Airport (EIA) officially opened on July 7, 2005, and it welcomed its first IATA carrier on 11th December 2006. The KRG has enacted favorable rules to attract foreign investors and to help citizens of the Kurdistan Region in exile return home. Domestic traffic, as well as regional traffic throughout the expansive Middle East, is growing. Kurdistan's great natural resources of oil, natural gas and other minerals are creating a flourishing and rapidly growing business environment. Kurdistan is previously in exile are returning, bringing with them connections to other lands. There is an ever stronger need for efficient air transport, for passengers as well as cargo. The Erbil area has a stable water supply, and is surrounded by scenic and accessible wilderness lands, with greenery, clean streams, waterfalls and caves. This stands in stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations, and visitors will fuel an important tourism industry in Kurdistan. These are some of the reasons that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and EIA have constructed and equipped an airport for the future, with capacity for three million passengers, and one of the world's longest runways, designed to accommodate the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft of that class. The airport is the culmination of the vision and strategy put in place in 2003.
