Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.
True flies are insects of the order Diptera (from the Greek di = two, and ptera = wings). The most obvious distinction from other orders of insects is that a typical fly possesses a pair of flight wings on the mesothorax and a pair of halteres, derived from the hind wings, on the metathorax. (Some species of flies are exceptional in that they are secondarily flightless.) The only other order of insects bearing two true, functional wings plus any form of halteres are the Strepsiptera, and in contrast to the flies, the Strepsiptera bear their halteres on the mesothorax and their flight wings on the metathorax.
The presence of a single pair of wings distinguishes most true flies from other insects with "fly" in their names, such as mayflies, dragonflies, damselflies, stoneflies, whiteflies, fireflies, alderflies, dobsonflies, snakeflies, sawflies, caddisflies, butterflies, or scorpionflies. However, some true flies have become secondarily wingless, for example many members of the superfamily Hippoboscoidea and some species that are inquilines in social insect colonies.

In Washington, U-S President Bill Clinton criticised the action and said religion should not be used to avoid international obligations. But the American Government has ruled out use of force against the helicopters. It's thought that several Iraqi fighters recently entered the no-fly zone - without drawing fire from the allied planes. William Cohen issued a blunt warning to the Baghdad regime on Wednesday to halt all flights into the no-fly zone in southern Iraq. He said measures had been taken to make it harder for Iraq to flaunt the restricted zone. But the defence secretary refused to specify what form any action would take if transgressions continued. Try Not to stand out Rather than driving fast, surrounded by bodyguards try to blend in as much as possible. Women should dress in local fashion and men should grow out their facial hair. 2. Saddam reportedly praised the group for its work so far. The U-S and Britain launched air strikes against Iraq in December, after Saddam refused t...

Arabic/Nat Iraq has flown the last of its pilgrims home from Mecca in defiance of U-S enforced no- fly zones. Three military helicopters transported the Iraqi pilgrims on Sunday from a border crossing point in Saudi Arabia to Baghdad. The last Iraqi pilgrims, who were in Saudi Arabia to perform the sacred Muslim ritual of Hajj, made their way home on Sunday. Baghdad send helicopters to the border town of Arar to wait for the Iraqis returning from the pilgrimage to Mecca. The helicopter flights violated the no-fly zones, set up after the 1990 Gulf War. Iraq said the helicopters were send to pick up sick, old and tired pilgrims and ferry them back home - in defiance of U-S patrolled no-fly zones. The United States failed to convince the U-N Security Council that the ...
English/Nat Iraq has reacted angrily after a U-S warplane fired a missile at an Iraqi anti-aircraft site. Iraq said the incident was a clear act of aggression on the part of the U-S, and was unjustifiable. The attack was in response to Iraqi radar locking onto British planes flying a routine mission over Iraq's no-fly zone. Iraq's U-N Ambassador Nizar Hamdoon told reporters at U-N headquarters in New York the attack was both unjustified and aggressive. SOUNDBITE (English) "This was an unwarranted attack on an Iraqi radar, obviously it did not hit the radar, it hit like 20 miles, 25 miles from the radar site, 11 miles from the Om Kasir location and we consider this as a violation of both the Iraqi air space and the Iraqi territory. The whole no-fly zone concept is rejected...
English/Nat Iraq's Deputy Representative to the United Nations says that Iraq will resist the no-fly zone in the northern part of the country. Saeed Hasan refused to say if Iraq will withdraw from the safe areas. Meanwhile the United Nations has expressed concern about the effect of the deteriorating situation on its humanitarian programs in the country. Even in the face of the U.S. missile attack, Iraq remains defiant of "no-fly zones" in the northern part of the country. Iraq's deputy ambassador to the U.N. first brushed aside reporters questions as he entered Iraq's mission building. UPSOUND: (English) Reporter: Good morning, "Good morning", reporter: Can you tell us anything, "For the time being now, maybe later on." SUPER CAPTION: Saeed Hasan/Deputy Pe...
English/Nat U-S Defence Secretary William Cohen on Wednesday vowed to enforce the no-fly zone in southern Iraq, which is patrolled by U-S, British and French planes. But he gave no indication what would happen if Iraqi flights continued in the zone that was placed off-limits to protect Shi'ite Muslims from Baghdad attacks. Natural Sound XFA Iraqi president Saddam Hussein has made a rare public appearance. Accompanied by senior party and government members, Saddam attended a private showing of the Iraqi play "Write with the name of God" which took its name from the Islamic book the Koran. The play, asks an imaginary question. What if death does not exist, and what if a man has the power to write the names of those who, as it pleases him, should die or should not? The official agency said the play represented a call to Arab and world opinion to speak up to put a stop to killing in the name of the law. At the end of the show, Saddam praised the work by thanking and shaking hands with each one of the actors. The play was attended by Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan, Deputy Prime Minister ...

LONG Source List Below: Click Show MORE: After decades of the United States rationalizing war and regime change on lies, the American People no longer get a pass to blindly accept more of the same in Syria. JUST like it was ENTIRELY possible to know in real time that the justifications for war in Iraq were predicated on lies, so it is with Syria. We stand on the edge of escalating a conflict which could trigger a much wider war, and the corporate FAKE news media AGAIN acts as stenographers for lies. SHAMEFUL. They should be tried for war crimes for their role in creating mass support for crimes against humanity. Turkey has again stated it’s desire for a no-fly zone in Northern Syria, this while it is shelling YPG Kurds in that area. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel is renewing her proposal for a no-fly zone in Syria also. And again: the same doubts surface: Is Turkey’s demand for a no-fly zone to prevent Daesh terrorists from going into Syria, or actually facilitate them with weapons and support? That is one the questions we’ll ask in this edition of the debate. During 2002 the amount of ordnance used by British and American aircraft patrolling the no-fly zones of Iraq increased compared to the previous years and by August had "become a full air offensive". 17/07/2007 - Hadani Ditmars, Canadian journalist who has been writing from Iraq since 1997, will be speaking about women in Iraq and how their lives have changed, drawing on her experiences described in her acclaimed book Dancing in the No-Fly Zone. Of the plethora of books out there on Iraq (now four years since the US-led invasion) Dancing in the No-Fly Zone has a sense of reality and immediacy difficult to match. Dancing in the No-Fly Zone deftly places the reader beyond stereotypes, into the lives of the people who have lived decades under war, sanctions, oppression and terror. Often passing as an Iraqi, and often using her ability to skip between various European languages -- intermittently waving her Canadian passport in defence -- Ditmars compels with her audacity. Looking for another way to divide Iraq. Republicans in the United States are pushing to separate the country into three separate countries, one Sunni, one Shia and one Kurdish. This is not the first time that Washington has called for the sovereign country of Iraq to be divided. During the 1990’s the US and the UK enforced no fly areas over Iraq and effectively caused the country to be divided along sectarian lines. In 2006, Joe Biden, then a Senator, called for dividing Iraq into three areas: Shias in the south, Kurds in the north and Sunnis in central Iraq. Why does Washington want to see the dissolution of the sovereign country of Iraq? In Iraqi territory that was occupied by the coalition, a peace conference was held where a ceasefire agreement was negotiated and signed by both sides. At the conference, Iraq was approved to fly armed helicopters on their side of the temporary border, ostensibly for government transit due to the damage done to civilian infrastructure. Soon after, these helicopters and much of the Iraqi armed forces were used to fight a Shi'ite uprising in the south. The rebellions were encouraged by an airing of "The Voice of Free Iraq" on 2 February 1991, which was broadcast from a CIA run radio station out of Saudi Arabia. The Arabic service of the Voice of America supported the uprising by stating that the rebellion was large, and that they soon would be liberated from Saddam. In the North, Kurdish le...
