The Iraq War was a protracted armed conflict that began with the 2003 invasion of Iraq led by the United States. The invasion toppled the government of Saddam Hussein. The conflict, however, continued for much of the next decade as an insurgency emerged to oppose the occupying forces and the post-invasion Iraqi government. The United States officially withdrew from the country in 2011, but the insurgency and various dimensions of the civil armed conflict continue.

Years of investing in Iraq with time, money and lives of American soldiers are the reasons the U.S. is considering new military action to quell a fast-moving insurgency that has taken key areas of northern Iraq and vows to march on Baghdad while still resisting direct involvement in neighboring Syria's civil war, Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday.

U.S. Sends Special Forces Troops to Iraq as ISIS Insurgency Worsens
The Obama adminstration has ordered the urgent deployment of several hundred armed troops in and around Iraq, after the rampant insurgency in the country forced the first talks between the US and Iran over a common security interest in more than a decade.
Barack Obama discussed the crisis with national security team on Monday night after earlier notifying Congress that up to 275 troops could be sent to Iraq to provide support and security for personnel and the US embassy in Baghdad.
While Obama has vowed to keep US troops out of combat in Iraq, he said in his notification to Congress that the personnel moving into the region were equipped f

(2006 Iraq War Documentary)
The War Tapes is the first documentary film of the 2003 invasion of Iraq to be produced by the soldiers themselves. The film (released commercially in 2006) follows three New Hampshire National Guard soldiers before, during, and after their deployment to Iraq about a year after the invasion. Their unit was Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment (Mountain), which deployed from March 2004 to February 2005.
The three soldiers with cameras featured in the film are SPC Michael Moriarty who signed up in a burst of patriotism after 9/11 and asked to be shipped to Iraq. His colleagues are SGT Stephen Pink, who joined the National Guard to help pay for college, and SGT Zack Bazzi. Two other soldiers, SGT Duncan Domey and SPC Brandon Wilkins, also filmed their entire deployments for the film. In all, 17 soldiers were given cameras and recorded 800 hours of tape in Iraq. Stateside interviews with the soldiers and their families made up an additional 200 hours of tape. The "cast" was narrowed to three soldiers for the final feature length film. They were chosen in part because they were seen by the director and producers as the "main characters".
The film won the prize for Best International Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in May 2006 and also Best International Documentary at BRITDOC in July 2006. The documentary was released for sale on DVD May 15, 2007. Moreover, it is possibly the most innovative result of the embedded reporter program. In this case the reporter did not go to Iraq, but provided cameras to the soldiers, and provided direction on filming to them via instant messaging and email.

Battlefield Iraq: Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar Province
Battlefield Iraq Heavy Clashes And Fighting Between Insurgents And Iraqi Army In The Anbar Province. Heavy Fighting Firefights And Clashes In Iraqs Anbar Province. Since 2014 the Anbar Province is place of fierce fighting between Sunni Iraqi Militias and the Iraqi Army. The main area of the clashes are the citys Ramadi and Falluja where a strong sunni population is located.
According to Officials and witnesses, the Iraq government mainly has lost control over the strategic citys, west of Baghdad.
The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi.
Al-Qaeda black flags have been seen on government and police vehicles captured by the fighters.
The army has besieged Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, and has launched air strikes on the city.
Security forces backed by tanks on battled militants in Iraq's Anbar province, where fighting has displaced thousands and sparked warnings of rights abuses and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Some of the most significant fighting appeared to be in Falluja, where the U.S. military fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Iraq war, with militants planting al Qaeda flags on buildings.
Gunmen calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, took to a stage before thousands of Sunnis following Friday prayers in Falluja.
The takeover of Fallujah and parts of Ramadi is the first time that tribal fighters have exercised such open control in major Iraqi cities since the height of the bloody insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003.
The fighting has left more than a hundred people dead and forced thousands of Falluja's residents to flee the city, to Baghdad, northern Iraq and the southern city of Karbala, where Shiite leaders are hosting the displaced families in housing built for religious pilgrims.
The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants.
Iraq's prime minister has urged residents and tribes in Anbar province to "expel" al-Qaeda-linked fighters to avoid an all-out battle - remarks that may signal an imminent military move to retake the former insurgent stronghold.
The Insurgents mainly ambushing Iraqi Army convoys in urban areas and attacking small check points and police stations with small arms, rpgs and ieds. The Iraqi Army repels with Air Strikes and armored infantry units.
The ISIL rebels were trying to bring the battle to the cities of Anbar and Fallujah because there's no security there and they know they will be thoroughly defeated in the desert.
The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008.
Officials have blamed the upsurge in violence to a resurgent Al-Qaeda
emboldened by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, but the government has itself faced criticism for not doing enough to address the concerns of Iraq's disaffected Sunni Arab minority ahead of April elections.

The invasion began on 20 March 2003. The U.S., joined by the United Kingdom and several coalition allies, launched a "shock and awe" surprise attack without declaring war. Iraqi forces were quickly overwhelmed as U.S. forces swept through the country. The invasion led to the collapse of the Ba'athist government; Saddam was captured in December 2003 and executed by a military court three years later. However, the power vacuum following Saddam's demise and the mismanagement of the occupation led to widespread sectarian violence between Shias and Sunnis as well as a lengthy insurgency against U.S. and coalition forces. The United States responded with a troop surge in 2007, identified as the COIN strategy; the heavy American security presence and deals made between the occupying forces and Sunni militias reduced the level of violence. The U.S. began withdrawing its troops in the winter of 2007–2008. The winding down of U.S. involvement in Iraq accelerated under President Barack Obama. The U.S. formally withdrew all combat troops from Iraq by December 2011.

US: Iraqi Insurgency Threatens American Interests
Years of investing in Iraq with time, money and lives of American soldiers are the reasons the U.S. is considering new military action to quell a fast-moving insurgency that has taken key areas of northern Iraq and vows to march on Baghdad while still resisting direct involvement in neighboring Syria's civil war, Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday.

STORYLINE:
Iraqis in the capital, Baghdad, welcomed the reported US negotiations with Iraqi armed groups, on Monday, saying they considered the talks would lead to stability and security in Iraq.
Meanwhile, unknown gunmen killed a barber and two of his clients, a man and his son, in the capital's New Baghdad neighbourhood on Sunday night.
Afterwards, the assailants planted a bomb inside the barber's shop and blew it up, setting fire to the shop and damaging ones nearby.
Also in Baghdad, a roadside bomb exploded early on Monday near an Iraqi police patrol in northern Baghdad's Azamiyah neighbourhood.
The patrol was stationed close to Baghdad's City Council building.
Two civilians were killed in the blast, with one more wounded, police 1st Lt. Mohammed al-Hayali said.
A damaged civilian car and a bulldozer clearing debris could be seen at the site of the incident.
On Monday Iraqis also responded to the acknowledgement by US defence secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld over the weekend that US officials have met with insurgents in Iraq.
One Iraqi citizen said he was fully in support of holding negotiations with Iraqi armed groups, as "the continuation of attacks will harm only Iraqis," said Ahmad Hazim.
Another man said the dialogue with Iraqi armed groups would certainly lead to stability in Iraq.
"If the armed groups lay down weapons and adopt the political process this will lead to stability of the security situation,'' said Ali Mohammed.
A British newspaper first reported that two meetings had recently taken place and at a villa north of Baghdad.

While Obama has vowed to keep US troops out of combat in Iraq, he said in his notification to Congress that the personnel moving into the region were equipped for direct fighting. In addition, officials told Reuters that the White House was considering sending a contingent of special forces to train and advise beleaguered Iraqi troops, many of whom have fled their posts in the face of the insurgency.
About 170 US personnel have already arrived in Baghdad -- almost as many as those already there -- with another 100 nearby outside Iraq to assist, rear admiral John Kirby said in a statement from the Pentagon late Monday. Obama sent a letter to Congress Monday informing them of the decision -- a signal that the administration does not want to risk another disaster at an under-guarded embassy akin to the assault on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya that remains a major controversy on the right.
The moves were made in advance of any decision Obama may yet make on attacking the Isis fighters currently threatening Iraq.
US and Iranian officials held talks over the crisis in Iraq on Monday. The discussions in Vienna took place on the sidelines of separate negotiations about Iran's nuclear programme, amid conflicting signals in Washington over the extent of any coordination with Tehran over the crisis in Iraq.
John Kerry, the US secretary of state, pointedly declined to rule out military cooperation in an interview on Monday, but US and Iranian officials later stressed that there was no prospect of military coordination, and none was discussed in Vienna, where talks were described as short and inconclusive.
"We are open to engaging the Iranians," said a senior State Department official, who characterised the discussions as brief. "These engagements will not include military coordination or strategic determinations about Iraq's future over the heads of the Iraqi people," the US official said, on condition of anonymity.
The Iranians confirmed that military cooperation was not on the cards. "The disastrous situation in Iraq was discussed today. No specific outcome was achieved," a senior Iranian official told Reuters.
Fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) have rapidly advanced through mostly Sunni areas of Iraq in recent days, capturing several cities. It was reported on Monday that they had taken Tal Afar, a northern Iraqi city. On Sunday, the insurgent fighters posted images purporting to show the execution of hundreds of Shia fighters.
Obama said in his notification to Congress that the military personnel being sent to Iraq would provide support and security for the American embassy in Baghdad, but was "equipped for combat".
"This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed," he said.
In Iraq on Monday, the capital, Baghdad, remained outside the grasp of Isis. But the mayor of Tal Afar, a city of 200,000 people located 260 miles north-west of Baghdad, told the Associated Press that the insurgent group was in control there. A resident said militants in pickup trucks with machine guns and jihadi banners were roaming the streets as gunfire rang out.
Fighting in Tal Afar began on Sunday, with Iraqi government officials saying Isis fighters were firing rockets seized from military arms depots in the Mosul area. They said the local garrison suffered heavy casualties and the main hospital was unable to cope with the wounded.
There were fears that militants would carry out further atrocities in Tal Afar, which is ethnically mixed and made up of Shias and Sunni Turkomen.
Claims at the weekend that the insurgents had killed 1,700 Iraqi soldiers could not be verified. But pictures, on a militant website, appear to show masked Isis fighters loading captives on to flatbed trucks before forcing them to lie facedown in a shallow ditch with their arms tied behind their backs. The final images show the bodies of the captives soaked in blood after being shot at several locations.

The Debate – ISIL Insurgency in Iraq (August 13th)
Baghdad is shaken with yet another bomb blast, this time the strongest since Prime Minister Haidar al Abadi took office. The ISIL terrorist group took responsibility of the attack, which claimed the lives of at 59 people in the capital’s Sadr city. As the country’s army, backed by popular mobilization units, continues to battle ISIL militants, the question, still remains whether peace will ever return to Iraq. Amid all the violence, the U-S army chief General Raymond Odierno has said that Iraq might be partitioned. In this edition of The Debate, we ask what is the future of the ISIL Takfiri insurgency in Iraq; and how effective has the US rol

President Barack Obama said Friday he is weighing a range of options for halting a violent Islamic insurgency in Iraq, but he warned that American military action alone cannot stabilize the country.
The president did not specify what options he was considering but said he would not send American troops back into combat in Iraq. The last U.S. troops withdrew in 2011 after more than eight years of war.
Obama says the Islamic insurgency has not caused any major disruptions in oil supplies, but that it could be a 'source of concern' if the ISIL is able to obtain control of significant refinerie

Hundreds of Iranians held a rally in central Tehran on Tuesday to protest against the ongoing Sunni insurgency in neighbouring Iraq led by the militant Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Demonstrators sang along with an anti-American protest song and chanted anti-American slogans.
Some protesters wore shrouds expressing their readiness to sacrifice their lives to protect holy Shiite sites in Iraq from Sunni militants.

In this edition of The Debate, we ask what is the future of the ISIL Takfiri insurgency in Iraq; and how effective has the US role in Iraq been in combating ISIL.

FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus012108
President Barack Obama said Friday he is weighing a range of options for halting a violent Islamic insurgency in Iraq, but he warned that American military action alone cannot stabilize the country.
The president did not specify what options he was considering but said he would not send American troops back into combat in Iraq. The last U.S. troops withdrew in 2011 after more than eight years of war.
Obama says the Islamic insurgency has not caused any major disruptions in oil supplies, but that it could be a 'source of concern' if the ISIL is able to obtain control of significant refineries.
He spoke from the South Lawn of the White House before boarding his Marine helicopter, beginning a four-day trip to North Dakota and California.

Protest against ongoing insurgency campaign in neighbouring Iraq
Hundreds of Iranians held a rally in central Tehran on Tuesday to protest against the ongoing Sunni insurgency in neighbouring Iraq led by the militant Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Saeed Jalili, a senior diplomat and former chief nuclear negotiator, addressed the crowd and said the crisis in Iraqi was the result of a proxy war waged by the US and Israel.
Demonstrators sang along with an anti-American protest song and chanted anti-American slogans.
Some protesters wore shrouds expressing their readiness to sacrifice their lives to protect holy Shiite sites in Iraq from Sunni militants.
Last week Iran said it would will "spare no effort" in protecting the sacred sites.
"We are defenders of the shrines (of holy Shiite saints in Iraq). Under any conditions and at any time we are ready to protect them even if our blood is spilled and we are killed in this path," one protester said.
Iran and Iraq, two Shiite-majority countries, have enjoyed close relations since the ousting of the late Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein following the 2003 US-led invasion.
Iran also is a major supporter of Syrian President Bashar Assad in the country's civil war.
Shiite Iran has opposed ISIL extremists in Iraq but it said it would not send forces to fight them, while opposing any form of US intervention in the neighbouring country.

STORYLINE:
Iraqi interim President Ghazi al-Yawer threatened on Monday to use a "very sharp sword" to fight insurgents and anyone else threatening the security of the country.
Al-Yawer spoke to reporters during a meeting with Defence Minister Hazem Shaalan and National Guard Brigadier General Muther al-Rashidi.
The country has been wracked by violence since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime nearly 15 months ago.
Foreign and local fighters have launched numerous attacks on Iraqi civilian targets and against US forces in attempts to thwart the country's postwar reconstruction, killing US troops and hundreds of Iraqi civilians.
Al-Yawer said the roughly 160 thousand coalition forces led by the United States were required to stay in the country because of the danger posed by the rebels.
"Those who claim they are resisting the occupation, the occupation is over now," he said.
Security officials also sought to reassure Iraqis they were trying to restore order.
Al-Rashardi said the national guard has divided the capital, Baghdad, into eight sections to make it easier to control and ensure security there.
"We have very big plans to follow this up," Shaalan said. "We are ready to sacrifice ourselves for our people."
When the amnesty expired, however, he would work for the death penalty to be reintroduced in Iraq.

Syrian officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Identified as Lieutenant Anas Ahmed al-Essa of the Syrian intelligence service, the 30-year-old said his group had been recruited to "cause chaos in Iraq... to bar America from reaching Syria."

"Every time you have a spike in violence and we have a spike here in early May in violence, I think what you have to do is step back a minute and think about what we're doing. We're involved in an insurgency, a very violent insurgency, if there was a magic bullet then General Casey or General Abizaid or I or somebody on the staff more likely would have found it. This requires patience, this is not something we're going to go out and knee jerk to (have a quick reaction) every time. We've always stood up here and said this is a thinking and adapting adversary, they are thinking and adapting. The vehicle born improvised explosive device is a very tough device to thwart, and so sure we work on it everyday, but I wouldn't look for results tomorrow. One thing we know about insurgency is that they last from three or four years to nine years. These are tough fights. And in the end it's going to have to be the Iraqis that win this. So it's not US forces."

6. SOUNDBITE (English): General Richard B. Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
"Sealing borders is an issue that we've talked about a lot in this room I think and anybody who wants to come to a map to help you understand borders can't be sealed. Now there is good work going on on the borders, there actually is. Let me just talk to you about borders for a second. We've got some folks from Homeland Security Department, George Casey visited them today out on the Western border, and he said from a year ago when he went out there, he went to a border post and it was just chaos. They didn't have facilities they didn't have any information technology to help them. These folks from Homeland Security have been over there helping the Iraqis in the same border post he went to today and he said it is remarkable, it is ordered, they have the information technology to properly screen folks who are trying to come into the country. You know most of the people who come into Iraq come in on false papers. They come in across the border station and they have appropriate paperwork as far as the border station is concerned. They don't have to sneak across and this will fix some of that. The other part of that is we need cooperation from Iraq's neighbours and that's being worked as well and very vigorously I might add."

The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff says dealing with the insurgency in Iraq requires patience and will likely go on for several years.
General Richard B. Myers said the insurgency is "thinking and adapting" and that "I wouldn't look for results tomorrow".
Myers also said sealing the Iraqi-Syrian border is impossible.
However, he said the information technology to screen people who cross the border has greatly improved.
Myers said most of the people who try to come into Iraq use false paperwork -- a problem that is being fixed with the new technology at the border stations.

7. Myers and Rumsfeld leaving
STORYLINE:
The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff says dealing with the insurgency in Iraq requires patience and will likely go on for several years.
General Richard B. Myers said the insurgency is "thinking and adapting" and that "I wouldn't look for results tomorrow".
Myers also said sealing the Iraqi-Syrian border is impossible.
However, he said the information technology to screen people who cross the border has greatly improved.
Myers said most of the people who try to come into Iraq use false paperwork -- a problem that is being fixed with the new technology at the border stations.

STORYLINE:
The streets of the Iraqi city of Hit, west of Baghdad, were deserted on Wednesday, a day after more than a thousand US troops and Iraqi forces launched Operation Sword in a bid to crush militants and foreign fighters in western Iraq.
It was the third major offensive in the area in recent weeks.
The new campaign is focusing on communities living along the Euphrates River between the towns of Hit and Haditha in the volatile Anbar province,
said a US Army spokesman.
The US troops include Marines, soldiers and sailors from Regimental Combat Team 2, comprised of the 2nd Marine Regiment and 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Marine Division, the spokesman said.
The region, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) northwest of Baghdad, is a hotbed of militant activity.
Operation Sword, or Saif in Arabic, comes on the heels of two other offensives dubbed Operations Spear and Dagger.
Operation Spear was aimed, according to US and Iraqi officials, at stemming the flow of foreign fighters over the porous Syrian border in Karabilah, which is near the Iraqi frontier town
of Qaim.
The US military said nearly 50 militants were killed during the five-day operation.
A senior al-Qaida leader, who was wanted in Saudi Arabia, was killed during the offensive, according to al-Qaida in Iraq's leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in an Internet posting.
Operation Dagger took place north of Baghdad and was aimed, according to US and Iraqi officials, at uprooting foreign fighter networks.

Izzat Ibrahim Al-Douri, King Of Clubs, Aide To Saddam Hussein, Killed In A Security Operation
A former top deputy to Saddam Hussein, and leader of Iraq's insurgency is reportedly dead. CNN's Hala Gorani has more on Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri.

Hussein deputy, insurgent leader al-Douri killed, Iraqi TV reports (CNN, Apr 17, 2015)
http://cnn.it/1DgUmtr
"Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, a former top deputy to Saddam Hussein and more recently a key figure in Sunni extremist groups battling the Iraqi government, has been killed in a security operation in that country, Iraqi state-run television reported Friday. Al-Douri was the highest-ranking member of Hussein's regime to evade capture -- the "King of Clubs" in a deck of playing cards used by American troops to identify the most-wanted regime officials.
He also was a man thought to have led the post-Hussein Sunni extremist group Naqshbandi Army. Military analysis website Globalsecurity.org says the Naqshbandi Army supports ISIS, which has taken over parts of Iraq and Syria. Al-Douri was killed in an operation by Iraqi security forces and Shia militia members in the Hamrin Mountains between Tikrit and Kirkuk, Iraq, Shia militia commander Hadi al-Ameri said.
That militia is a predominantly Shiite fighting group that worked with Iraqi troops earlier this month to liberate the Iraqi city of Tikrit from ISIS. The death of al-Douri was also reported by the governor of Salahuddin province, Raid al-Jubouri, who spoke by phone on Iraqi television. Al-Douri's body arrived Friday in Baghdad, where DNA samples were taken to confirm the identity, said the spokesman of another Shiite militia called Hashd Shaabi in an interview with state-run Iraqiya TV...."
Saddam aide Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri 'killed' in Iraq (BBC, Apr 17, 2015)
http://bbc.in/1ONFuuX
"Fugitive Iraqi militant leader Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, who was right-hand man to Iraq's ex-leader Saddam Hussein, has been killed, Iraqi officials say. They say he died in fighting in Salahuddin province, north of Baghdad. His supporters have denied the claim. Douri, 72, led the Naqshbandi Order insurgent group, a key force behind the recent rise of Islamic State (IS). He was deputy to Saddam Hussein, who was ousted when US-led forces invaded Iraq in 2003 and executed in 2006.
Douri was regarded as the most high-profile official of Saddam Hussein's Baath party to successfully evade capture after the invasion, and had a large bounty on his head for years. He was the King of Clubs in the famous pack of cards the US issued of wanted members of Saddam Hussein's regime after its defeat. There have been reports of Douri's death or capture before and the now-dissolved Baath party denied the latest claim. However, al-Arabiya TV showed a picture of what it said was Douri's body.
The remains have now been transferred to Baghdad for DNA testing, according to the Popular Mobilisation Forces - an umbrella group of Shia militia fighting IS...."

According to the Iraq Body Count project, a sample of the deaths found in about 800 logs, extrapolated to the full set of records, shows an estimated 15,000 civilian deaths that had not been previously admitted by the US government. 66,000 civilians were reported dead in the logs, out of 109,000 deaths in total.[8][10] The IBC has so far added a total of 3,334 of these previously unrecorded civilian deaths to its database from their ongoing analysis of the war logs. A list of these incidents, added as of 2 January 2013, has been published on the IBC website.[11][12]
The Guardian stated that the logs show "US authorities failed to investigate hundreds of reports of abuse, torture, rape and even murder by Iraqi police and soldiers"; the coalition, according to The Guardian, has "a formal policy of ignoring such allegations", unless the allegations involve coalition forces.[2]
Sometimes US troops classified civilian deaths as enemy casualties. For example, the July 12, 2007, Baghdad airstrike by US helicopter gunships which killed two Reuters journalists along with several men thought to be armed suspected to be insurgents. They, including the journalists, were all listed as "enemy killed in action".[2]
Wired Magazine said that even after the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse incident came to light in 2004, abuse of prisoners or detainees by Iraqi security forces continued; in one recorded case, US troops confiscated a "hand cranked generator with wire clamps" from a Baghdad police station, after a detainee claimed to have been brutalized there.[8]
One report analyzed by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism seems to show that "the US military cleared an Apache helicopter gunship to open fire on Iraqi insurgents who were trying to surrender".[13]
According to Wired Magazine, "WikiLeaks may have just bolstered one of the Bush administration's most controversial claims about the Iraq war: that Iran supplied many of the Iraq insurgency's deadliest weapons and worked hand-in-glove with some of its most lethal militias. The documents indicate that Iran was a major combatant in the Iraq war, as its elite Quds Force trained Iraqi Shiite insurgents and imported deadly weapons like the shape-charged explosively formed penetrator bombs into Iraq for use against civilians, Sunni militants and U.S. troops."[8]
It was reported in the Boston Globe that the documents show Iraqi operatives being trained by Hezbollah in precision military-style kidnappings. Reports also include incidents of US surveillance aircraft lost deep in Iranian territory.[14][15]
A number of the documents, as defined by Al Jazeera English, describe how US troops killed almost 700 civilians for coming too close to checkpoints, including pregnant women and the mentally ill. At least a half-dozen incidents involved Iraqi men transporting pregnant family members to hospitals.[16]
The New York Times said the reports contain evidence of many abuses, including civilian deaths, committed by contractors. The New York Times points out some specific reports, such as one which says "after the IED strike a witness reports the Blackwater employees fired indiscriminately at the scene."[17] In another event on 14 May 2005, an American unit "observed a Blackwater PSD shoot up a civ vehicle" killing a father and wounding his wife and daughter.[17]
A document from December 2006, as defined by The Australian, describes a plan by a Shia militia commander to kidnap US soldiers in Baghdad in late 2006 or early 2007." Also, The Australian reports that "detainee testimony" and "a captured militant's diary" are cited among the documents, in order to demonstrate "how Iran provided Iraqi militias with weapons such as rockets and lethal roadside bombs."

The Iraq War documents leak is the WikiLeaks disclosure of a collection of 391,832 United States Army field reports, also called the Iraq War Logs, of the Iraq War from 2004 to 2009 to several international media organizations and published on the Internet by WikiLeaks on 22 October 2010. The files record 66,081 civilian deaths out of 109,000 recorded deaths. The leak resulted in the Iraq Body Count project adding 15,000 civilian deaths to their count, bringing their total to over 150,000, with roughly 80% of those civilians. It is the biggest leak in the military history of the United States, surpassing the Afghan War documents leak of 25 July 2010.

Chris Hedges on the Future of Iraq (2007)
Muqtada al-Sadr returned to Iraq in the holy city of Najaf to lead the Sadrist movement after being in exile since 2007.[311]
On 15 January 2011, three U.S. troops were killed in Iraq. One of the troops was killed on a military operation in central Iraq, while the other two troops were deliberately shot by one or two Iraqi soldiers during a training exercise.[312]
On 6 June, five U.S. troops were killed in an apparent rocket attack on Camp Victory, located near Baghdad International Airport.[313] A sixth soldier, who was wounded in the attack, died 10 days later of his wounds.[314]
On 29 June, three U.S. troops were killed in a rocket attack on a U.S. base located near the border with Iran. It was speculated that the militant group responsible for the attack was the same one which attacked Camp Victory just over three weeks before.[315] With the three deaths, June 2011, became the bloodiest month in Iraq for the U.S. military since June 2009, with 15 U.S. soldiers killed, only one of them outside combat.[316]
In September, Iraq signed a contract to buy 18 Lockheed Martin F‑16 warplanes, becoming the 26th nation to operate the F‑16. Because of windfall profits from oil, the Iraqi government is planning to double this originally planned 18, to 36 F-16s. Iraq is relying on the U.S. military for air support as it rebuilds its forces and battles a stubborn Islamist insurgency.[317]
With the collapse of the discussions about extending the stay of any U.S. troops beyond 2011, where they would not be granted any immunity from the Iraqi government, on 21 October 2011, President Obama announced at a White House press conference that all remaining U.S. troops and trainers would leave Iraq by the end of the year as previously scheduled, bringing the U.S. mission in Iraq to an end.[92] The last American soldier to die in Iraq before the withdrawal was killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad on 14 November.[318]
In November 2011, the U.S. Senate voted down a resolution to formally end the war by bringing its authorization by Congress to an end.[319]
The last U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq on 18 December.[320] The next day, Iraqi officials issued an arrest warrant for the Sunni Vice-President Tareq Al-Hashemi. He has been accused of involvement in assassinations and fled to the Kurdish part of Iraq.[321]
Iraqi insurgency surged in the aftermath of the U.S. withdrawal. The terror campaigns have since been engaged by Iraqi, primarily radical Sunni, insurgent groups against the central government and the warfare between various factions within Iraq. The events of post U.S. withdrawal violence succeeded the previous insurgency in Iraq (prior to 18 December 2011), but have showed different patterns, raising concerns that the surging violence might slide into another civil war. Some 1,000 people were killed across Iraq within the first two months since U.S. withdrawal.
Sectarian violence continued in the first half of 2013— at least 56 people died in April when a Sunni protest in Hawija was interrupted by a government-supported helicopter raid and a series of violent incidents occurred in May. On May 20 , 2013, at least 95 people died in a wave of car bomb attacks that was preceded by a car bombing on May 15 that led to 33 deaths; also, on May 18, 76 people were killed in the Sunni areas of Baghdad. Some experts have stated that Iraq could return to the brutal sectarian conflict of 2006.
