"Highway of Death" Iraqi Army Armed Retreat from Kuwait 1991

The Highway of Death refers to a road between Kuwait and Basra on which retreating units of the Iraqi army as well as Iraqi civilians were attacked and destroyed by American aircraft and ground forces during the United Nations Coalition offensive in the Gulf War, on the night of February 26-February 27, 1991, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of vehicles and the deaths of an unknown and disputed number of Iraqi soldiers and civilians. The scenes of carnage on the road are some of the most recognizable images of the war. According to Elaine Sciolino of the New York Times, the images suggested a turkey shoot and contributed to the war's resolution soon afterwards. American attacks were conducted on two different roads: some 1,400-2,000 vehicles hit on the main Highway 80 north of Al Jahra (the "actual" Highway of Death) and, few days later, another 400-700 or so on the much-less known coastal road to Basra. On the main highway, aircraft bombed the front and rear of the massive vehicle column of Iraqi Regular Army, trapping the convoy, and leaving sitting targets for later airstrikes. When visited by journalists the main highway had been reduced to a long uninterrupted line of destroyed, damaged, and abandoned vehicles, sometimes called the Mile of Death. The wreckage predominantly consisted of stolen civilian vehicles (such as cars, trucks, and buses) which were manned by Iraqi conscripts and the Palestinian fighters, accompanied by their family members fleeing the advancing Coalition forces.

Iraqi army & volunteer forces recapture nearly 70% of Tikrit

Iraqi forces are still engaging the ISIL terrorists in a battle to recapture the strategic city of Tikrit. According to security sources, the army and volunteer forces have so far retaken about seventy percent of the city and are pushing to regain the remaining areas. They've surrounded many terrorist hideouts in the city center but the large number of bombs planted by the ISIL members is hampering the operation. A top leader of the Badr Organization and the spokesman for the volunteer Popular Mobilization units, has said that Tikrit will be liberated within three days. Meanwhile, a senior commander of the Iraqi volunteer forces Hadi al-Ameri has praised Iran’s QUOTE unconditional support for Baghdad in its ongoing fight against the ISIL terrorists. Iraq - Iraqi Armed Forces clash with Militants in Anbar Province

In Anbar Province, Islamic extremists in league with al Qaeda have taken the city of Fallujah -- where U.S. forces fought a ferocious battle in 2004. The fight today is between the two main branches of the Islamic faith -- the Sunni and the Shia -- which are now at war with eachother. Last week, the Iraqi military went on the attack, firing at extremists who had overrun Mosques, jails and police stations in the main towns of Anbar, Fallujah and Ramadi. The insurgents are reported to still be in control of Fallujah. Armed with guns and rocket-propelled grenades, they're battling local tribesmen, and the largely U.S. trained and equipped Iraqi army. The violence is a spillover from the savage civil war next door in Syria, where al Qaeda-linked militants have exported their cause and their men across the border. They're mostly Sunni Muslims who want to rule this part of the world, and impose hardline Shariah law. These days though, their main enemy is no longer the U.S. military- it's the millions of Shiite Muslims who live there, and the Shiite controlled government that rules Iraq. Over the past year, this religious conflict has grown. In the country America believed was headed for stable democracy, nearly 8,000 civilians were killed in 2013- a return to the kind of violence Iraqis haven't seen since the worst years of the war.
