The World Food Programme (WFP) (Italian: Programma Alimentare Mondiale) is the food assistance branch of the United Nations, and the world's largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger worldwide. WFP provides food, on average, to 90 million people per year, 58 million of whom are children. From its headquarters in Rome and more than 80 country offices around the world, WFP works to help people who are unable to produce or obtain enough food for themselves and their families. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group and part of its Executive Committee.
The WFP was first established in 1961 after the 1960 Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Conference, when George McGovern, director of the US Food for Peace Programmes, proposed establishing a multilateral food aid programme. WFP was formally established in 1963 by the FAO and the United Nations General Assembly on a three-year experimental basis. In 1965, the programme was extended to a continuing basis.
The WFP is governed by an Executive Board which consists of representatives from 36 member states. Ertharin Cousin is the current Executive Director, appointed jointly by the UN Secretary General and the Director-General of the FAO for a five-year term. She heads the Secretariat of WFP.
Global cuisines can be defined as cuisine based upon global, continental, national, state or local regions; essentially as cuisines of the world. Cuisine is a characteristic style of cooking practices and traditions, often associated with a specific culture. Global cuisines may vary based upon food availability and trade, various climates and ecosystems, cooking traditions and practices, and cultural differences. Regional food preparation traditions, customs and ingredients often coalesce to create dishes unique to a particular region, and regional cuisines are often named after the geographic areas or regions they originate from. There have been significant improvements during the last century in food preservation, storage, shipping and production, and today most countries, cities and regions have access to their traditional cuisines and many other global cuisines. New cuisines continue to evolve in contemporary times. For example, fusion cuisine combines elements of various culinary traditions while not being categorized per any one cuisine style, and can pertain to innovations in many contemporary cuisines.

This is a campaign from the World Food Programme, the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. In emergencies, they get food to where it is needed, saving the lives of victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. WFP is part of the United Nations system and is voluntarily funded.
On average, WFP reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance in 75 countries each year. About 11,500 people work for the organisation, most of them in remote areas, serving the hungry.

#WF14 - Exclusive interview of Ertharin Cousin, World Food Programme
This year is the 10th edition of the Women’s Forum Global Meeting. We are celebrating by bringing together a truly outstanding group of speakers — trailblazers for human rights and women’s empowerment and pioneers and new innovators in business, education, and science and technology. Our aim? For participants be inspired by and discuss with these leaders about how we can contribute to more equitable economies and societies. Ours is a complicated and sometimes overwhelming, unjust, and violent world. It’s also a world where more women, in more contexts, have agency and can make a difference.
Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director, WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME
Ertharin Cousin began her tenure as the twelfth Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme on 5 April 2012.
Cousin brings more than twenty-five years of national and international non-profit, government, and corporate leadership experience focusing on hunger, food, and resilience strategies. Cousin guides the World Food Programme in meeting urgent food needs while championing longer-term solutions to food insecurity and hunger. She is an exceptional advocate for improving the lives of hungry people worldwide, and travels extensively to raise awareness of food insecurity and chronic malnutrition.

CloseUP on Zero Hunger: Episode 1 feat. Iraq
Welcome to WFP's new series, "CloseUP on Zero Hunger." This first episode features Iraq, where 3 million people have fled their homes to escape ISIS. The small camp of Debaga, which is home to around 400 Iraqis, is just one example of this large-scale displacement. Every month, WFP was providing full food rations to the families in Debaga, but this is no longer the case. Due to lack of funds, WFP has been forced to reduce this crucial food assistance.

A WFP team has trekked into the Himalayas to unfurl a flag representing the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger, as part of an international effort to bring the global goals to the world’s attention. WFP’s flag-bearer Nimdoma Sherpa climbed 2,000 metres and overcame rain, fog, rough trails and steep ascents to reach the village of Kerauja, in Gorkha district. As a child, Nimdoma received WFP school meals and at the age of 17, in 2008, she became the then-youngest woman to summit Mount Everest. Now, Nimdoma is using her climbing expertise to help WFP reach villages affected by the April earthquake. She was accompanied on this trip by a train of mules bringing rice as part of the recovery effort.

McDonald's Launches Anti-Hunger Ad for the UN's World Food Programme on Peace Day
Mcdonald's apparently had its own plans for Peace Day.
After turning down Burger King's elaborate offer to collaborate on a McWhopper, McDonald's created a 30-second spot—which carries no McDonald's branding—to drive support to the United Nations' World Food Programme.
The spot, "Symbols," created by TBWA\Chiat\Day in New York, is part of the one-day campaign, which is meant to showcase how consumers can make a difference and support refugees and displaced people who are struggling to feed their families.
The campaign is a combined effort "championed first by McDonald's," says a press release, and supported by companies include Burger King, Cargill, DreamWorks Animation, Facebook, Google, MasterCard, McCain Foods, McDonald's, OMD, Twitter, TBWA and United Airlines.
"If anyone can help an international effort to help feed refugees and the fight against hunger, it's us," Steve Easterbrook said in a statement to USA Today.
The commercial, with a voiceover by Liam Neeson and visuals by graphic artist Noma Bar, is meant to highlight how war and hunger are connected as well as "the magnitude of current needs and how a donation to WFP can make a difference."
McDonald's is donating media in 38 countries for the spot and putting it on all of its social channels. Many of the companies involved have also uploaded the artwork associated with the campaign to their social media pages to boost awareness of the campaign that way.
"The private sector has a significant role to play in ending hunger and promoting peace," Jay Aldous, WFP director of private sector partnerships, said in a statement. "This global effort is a powerful example of brands coming together with one voice to make a tangible impact in the lives of vulnerable people."
The WFP's emergency response fund will use the money raised by this effort to help its most critical operations, like those in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan and Yemen.
Further information was not immediately available, reps for McDonald's and WFP did not immediately respond to Adweek's requests for comment.

George H. Nash, a historian of the modern American Conservative movement, states that Buckley was "arguably the most important public intellectual in the United States in the past half century... For an entire generation, he was the preeminent voice of American conservatism and its first great ecumenical figure."[7] Buckley's primary contribution to politics was a fusion of traditional American political conservatism with laissez-faire economic theory and anti-communism, laying groundwork for the new American conservatism of U.S. presidential candidate Barry Goldwater and President Ronald Reagan.
Buckley wrote God and Man at Yale (1951) and over 50 other books on writing, speaking, history, politics and sailing, including a series of novels featuring CIA agent Blackford Oakes. Buckley referred to himself as either a libertarian or conservative.[8][9] He resided in New York City and Stamford, Connecticut. He was a practicing Roman Catholic, regularly attending the traditional Latin Mass in Connecticut.

George Stanley McGovern (July 19, 1922 -- October 21, 2012) was an American historian, author and U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and the Democratic Party presidential nominee in the 1972 presidential election.
McGovern grew up in Mitchell, South Dakota, where he was a renowned debater. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Forces upon the country's entry into World War II and as a B-24 Liberator pilot flew 35 missions over German-occupied Europe. Among the medals bestowed upon him was a Distinguished Flying Cross for making a hazardous emergency landing of his damaged plane and saving his crew. After the war he gained degrees from Dakota Wesleyan University and Northwestern University, culminating in a PhD, and was a history professor. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1956 and re-elected in 1958. After a failed bid for the U.S. Senate in 1960, he was elected there in 1962.
As a senator, McGovern was an exemplar of modern American liberalism. He became most known for his outspoken opposition to the growing U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. He staged a brief nomination run in the 1968 presidential election as a stand-in for the assassinated Robert F. Kennedy. The subsequent McGovern--Fraser Commission fundamentally altered the presidential nominating process, by greatly increasing the number of caucuses and primaries and reducing the influence of party insiders. The McGovern--Hatfield Amendment sought to end the Vietnam War by legislative means but was defeated in 1970 and 1971. McGovern's long-shot, grassroots-based 1972 presidential campaign found triumph in gaining the Democratic nomination but left the party badly split ideologically, and the failed vice-presidential pick of Thomas Eagleton undermined McGovern's credibility. In the general election McGovern lost to incumbent Richard Nixon in one of the biggest landslides in American electoral history. Re-elected Senator in 1968 and 1974, McGovern was defeated in a bid for a fourth term in 1980.
Throughout his career, McGovern was involved in issues related to agriculture, food, nutrition, and hunger. As the first director of the Food for Peace program in 1961, McGovern oversaw the distribution of U.S. surpluses to the needy abroad and was instrumental in the creation of the United Nations-based World Food Programme. As sole chair of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs from 1968 to 1977, McGovern publicized the problem of hunger within the United States and issued the "McGovern Report" that led to a new set of nutritional guidelines for Americans. McGovern later served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture from 1998 to 2001 and was appointed the first UN Global Ambassador on World Hunger by the World Food Programme in 2001. The McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program has provided school meals for millions of children in dozens of countries since 2000 and resulted in McGovern's being named World Food Prize co‑laureate in 2008.

On 14 February 2015, Paris Saint-German played against Caen at Parc des Princes. For most players this game was just another day on the job. For Zlatan Ibrahimović this was his most important game to date.
Underneath his sweater he had 50 new names tattooed. Names of people he’d never met, but still wanted to keep close. Names of some of the 805 million people suffering from hunger today.
These people don’t often make the front page, yet hunger and malnutrition are the number one risk to health worldwide — greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

We have a problem.
870 million people go to bed hungry each night.
One in Eight
That's reason enough to start solving hunger.
But there's more.
Nourished women have healthier, heavier babies whose immune systems are stronger for life.
Studies show that by addressing child undernutrition, countries can significantly increase their GDP.
Now Listen up!
We know how to solve hunger
Provide food in emergencies
Support smallholder farmers
Give children vital nutrition
Empower women and girls
Build food safety nets
Support local food markets
Working together -- citizens, companies, and governments
WE can make it happen.
Hunger | The world's greatest solvable problem.

William Frank Buckley, Jr. (November 24, 1925 -- February 27, 2008) was a conservative American author[3] and commentator. He founded the political magazine National Review in 1955, which had a major impact in stimulating the conservative movement. He hosted 1,429 episodes of the television show Firing Line from 1966 until 1999, where his public persona was famous for a wide vocabulary. He also wrote a nationally syndicated newspaper column, and wrote numerous spy novels.

Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the World Food Programme, speaks about how she came to be a global leader in efforts to overcome hunger, and how we can also contribute to promoting food security.
Moderator:
Ann Walker Marchant, CEO, the Walker Marchant Group, and Member of the Women’s Forum Program Committee
