The Taliban in Pakistan
We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates.
In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants.

In Afghanistan, fierce fighting is raging over control of the northern key city of Kunduz as Afghan forces battle a Taliban takeover.
Around five-thousand troops, backed by US air cover, are defending the city’s airport from inside the premises. NATO forces have also arrived in the city to help combat the advances of the militants. Convoys of Afghan army reinforcements are on their way to Kunduz, but their movement has been slowed by militants’ landmines and roadblocks. The Taliban say they are still in control of the city they seized on Monday, and that they have gained some ground around the airport. Local officials say the forces have r

The most immediate test facing the government of Afghanistan is not so much whether it can quickly mount a counterattack and retake Kunduz, the northern city that fell to the Taliban on Monday, but whether it can prevent a nearby city from falling as well.
The government’s inaction in the face of the loss of Kunduz has prompted a crisis of confidence in the neighboring province of Baghlan, where wealthier citizens and those with government connections have begun to leave for the relative safety of their hometowns.
The American-backed government in Kabul is facing one of its gravest moments, amid concerns that government security forces in t

Afghans Fight Back Against Taliban In Kunduz
Afghan security forces have retaken the police station and other parts of Kunduz after they were captured by the Taliban.
Militants swept into the city of 300,000 people on Monday, taking scores of police and armed forces guarding it by surprise.
Kunduz's police chief said on Wednesday that pro-government forces were finally gaining ground.
The jail had also been retaken, he said.
Afghan reinforcements backed by US airstrikes began their attempt to retake the city on Tuesday, but faced fierce resistance.

Government fighters on the ground were hampered by a reluctance to use attack helicopters and heavy artillery in urban areas.
It was the first major urban area the Taliban had seized since the 2001 US-led invasion ousted the extremist regime.
Some Afghan officials told Reuters that Kunduz fell so quickly once insurgents were inside the city limits because their forces were not ready.
"This is the first experience for Afghan forces to battle insurgents inside a major city," said Abdul Wadud Paiman, a member of parliament from Kunduz.
"They might not have such training and that's why they were confused and did not know what to do."

Kunduz had about 2,000 national police and 3,000 soldiers protecting the city on Monday when the Taliban struck.
They were backed by about 1,000 militiamen linked to local power brokers, according to Kunduz police.
A Taliban spokesman said the assault on Kunduz was supposed to show that the Taliban's new leader, Mullah Akhtar Mansour, is able to win in battle.
"This is a message to those saying the Taliban had divided or weakened after Mullah Omar's death," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.
Defeat in Kunduz would be a major setback for the US-led coalition that invaded Afghanistan - including the UK - which spent many years and billions training Afghan forces to take on the Taliban.

Copy of Afghan forces push to retake Kunduz from Taliban
In Afghanistan, fierce fighting is raging over control of the northern key city of Kunduz as Afghan forces battle a Taliban takeover.
Around five-thousand troops, backed by US air cover, are defending the city’s airport from inside the premises. NATO forces have also arrived in the city to help combat the advances of the militants. Convoys of Afghan army reinforcements are on their way to Kunduz, but their movement has been slowed by militants’ landmines and roadblocks. The Taliban say they are still in control of the city they seized on Monday, and that they have gained some ground around the airport. Local officials say the forces have retaken police headquarters and the city prison from the militants, and that hundreds of Taliban militants have been killed.

Shaken by Taliban Victory in Kunduz, Afghans Flee Another Provincial Capital
The most immediate test facing the government of Afghanistan is not so much whether it can quickly mount a counterattack and retake Kunduz, the northern city that fell to the Taliban on Monday, but whether it can prevent a nearby city from falling as well.
The government’s inaction in the face of the loss of Kunduz has prompted a crisis of confidence in the neighboring province of Baghlan, where wealthier citizens and those with government connections have begun to leave for the relative safety of their hometowns.
The American-backed government in Kabul is facing one of its gravest moments, amid concerns that government security forces in the north are struggling to stand up to far less numerous Taliban forces.

Talk to Al Jazeera - Abdullah Abdullah: 'The Taliban are receiving support within Pakistan'
Afghanistan was supposed to get a new start one year ago. After 13 years in power, President Hamid Karzai, who had led the country since the Taliban government was defeated after the 9/11 attacks, finally stood down.
After a contentious election in 2014, with widespread claims of ballot rigging, the two main candidates were persuaded to share power. Dr Ashraf Ghani became president and his opponent, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the chief executive.
All this happened to coinicide with the departure of many of the international forces in the country, leaving the Afghan army and police in charge of security.

At the peak of the US-led Afghanistan combat mission there had been about 130,000 US and NATO troops in the country. Now there are about 16,000.
This has led to an increase in insecurity and a very negative effect on the country's economy. Corruption is rife and jobs are few and far between.
Civilian casualties have soared to a record high in the first half of 2015 according to a UN report, and many Afghans are leaving the country to escape increasing violence. Afghans are the second-largest group of refugees seeking asylum in Europe.
"The current security situation is challenging. Perhaps people don't have confidence in the future of security. That is the main issue [why people are leaving Afghanistan] and it is something we have to address.... It has turned into a crisis for Europe," says Abdullah Abdullah.
So how are the two rivals managing working together? How will they cope with the country's deteriorating security situation? How do they deal with the Taliban? And what is Pakistan's role in Afghanistan?
Abdullah Abdullah joins Talk to Al Jazeera to discuss the political and economic challenges facing Afghanistan; the threat of ISIL and the Taliban; and why so many Afghans are fleeing to Europe.
Editor's note: The conversation was conducted just before the recent Taliban takeover in the city of Kunduz.

Out of bounds for most Pakistanis, this report gains rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan. The army claims it has South Waziristan under control, but is it a ticking time bomb of extremism?
In a military hospital in Islamabad, hundreds of "profoundly damaged and disabled" soldiers are being treated. They've come from the western tribal belt, where for the last nine years Pakistan has been waging a largely hidden war against extremists. "There has been this double game that has gone on for many years, of Pakistan supporting the NATO presence in Afghanistan and at the same time allowing the Afghan Taliban to operate against the NATO forces", explains Pakistan's foremost expert on Islamists in the region, Ahmed Rashid. He claims the government's duplicity has radicalised a local variant of the Taliban. "There is now a full-scale extremist movement in Pakistan that is trying to overthrow the State." The agents of some of the worst acts of global terrorism inhabit this remote frontier. Yet many local villagers claim life under the Taliban "was normal" and "nobody was afraid". They argue the army intervention in the region has only been destructive. In an attempt to win hearts and minds, the army has opened a high school for girls, which aid workers argue is "critical for countering extremism". However Pakistan's Taliban vow they're determined "to escalate the war".

The Pakistani Army's Difficult Battle with the Taliban
Battle for Pakistan (2009): Despite its efforts to root out the Taliban, the Pakistani army is making little headway in the tribal regions. Its troops are also blamed for the deaths of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

'There was firing everywhere... Whatever it was, it was hell on earth'. This civilian had no time to hide when the army launched an attack against suspected targets. '200, 250 people were killed and houses destroyed, there was fighting and planes flying over, suddenly the planes started bombing the market'. Keen to clean up the area, the army has caused massive destruction. Its scorched earth policy is also leaving nearly half a million people homeless and angry. President Zadari's spokesman argues that this brutal approach is the only way to respond to the Taliban's guerrilla warfare: 'if we do not check them now, they might overrun the whole country...This is the price one really has to pay when you are fighting the militants and the extremists.' Despite the government's claims that the situation is improving, the enemy is gaining ground, even raiding NATO forces supply lines. Opposition leader Imran Khan believes the military campaign is counter-productive: 'This has actually been the greatest gift for the terrorists of 9/11' he warns, 'Pakistan is a country of 160 million people. A destabilised Pakistan, a radical, destabilised Pakistan is in no-one's interests'.
