The Televixen caught up with Arrow’s lovely Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak) at this summer’s San Diego Comic Con, and had the chance to find out more about what will be happening with her fan favorite character in the upcoming season of the comic book television series. Here’s what Rickards had to tease about Felicity’s Season 4 arc …

On Oliver and Felicity in S4:

Last time we checked in with Oliver and Felicity, they were riding off into the sunset together, leaving the angst and drama of Starling City and the Arrow lifestyle behind. Alas, there would be no show without the Green Arrow and his superhero partners trying to save Star City. But what does this mean for Olicity? Here’s what Rickards had to tease about the Olicity dynamic heading into the show’s fourth season …

“I feel like since we sort of gave their relationship a fair shot, we’re going to give it a fair shot. Therefore, there’s gonna be a lot of turmoil in a relationship sense and possibly the weight of having this void of not having to protect a city anymore … But, with that being said, we do get to see them as a couple. I don’t know for how long. Maybe it lasts forever. Maybe it lasts a couple of episodes. But hopefully the love is stronger than whatever gets thrown at them.”

On Felicity’s tears last season:

The character of Felicity came under some criticism last season for the way she was often brought to tears. (Personally, I thought the tears were entirely warranted given the angsty situations, but I can see why fans are eager to see the return of the much-needed light-hearted dynamic that seasons 1 and 2 Felicity brought to the show.) Here’s what Rickards had to say about Felicity’s season 3 tears …

“She felt like she was crying a lot. I feel like she went through a year that wasn’t necessarily her favorite. I agree. I feel like she lost a little bit of her strength, to a certain extent. I think she got burned a couple too many times, and then found herself in situations she wasn’t exactly sure she wanted to be in or if she was being true to herself between Ray and between Oliver, and if she was giving enough time to what she truly wanted. And then we throw her mom in there. And we get mom to really tell the truth. And that’s kind of what happens, and you end up sobbing.”

On the return of a happier Felicity:

Rickards hopes that Season 4 will see a return to a happier Felicity, something that seems to be in theme with the more light-hearted tone the show is going for in the upcoming season. Here’s what Rickards had to say about her hopes for Felicity’s arc in particular …

“That’s my hope and the plan and, hopefully, she gets funnier again because I don’t want to see her crying all of the time. It was a big disappointment for me to have her crying a lot because one thing I love about Felicity so much is that she’s so strong and independent and sticks to her guns and is true to herself. And that’s something I admire about her. I think she was true to herself last year, but I just don’t know if she necessarily knew what she was doing was authentic and she was trying to find it … I think the Arrow life took up a lot more of her space emotionally and physically. I’m sure she was exhausted and having nightmares and I’m not sure when she goes to therapy.”

On Felicity having dated three Justice League members:

When asked about Felicity’s history of dating not one, not two, but three Justice League members, Rickards spoke about Felicity’s ability to bring out the best in people …

“Given that two of them weren’t really heroes when she was interested in them romantically or creating a friendship, which is to say: Does she make them super? I don’t know. But I do believe that she brings out the best in people. It goes back to saying maybe she exhausted herself a little too much and didn’t take good care of herself. Just saying. But that’s an interesting fact. Maybe she has a type?”
