Its area of responsibility includes countries in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, most notably Afghanistan and Iraq. CENTCOM has been the main American presence in many military operations, including the Persian Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan (2001–present), and the Iraq War. Forces from CENTCOM currently are deployed primarily in Iraq and Afghanistan in combat roles and have bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Pakistan, and central Asia in support roles. CENTCOM forces have also been deployed in Jordan, and Saudi Arabia in the past, although no substantial forces are based in those countries as of 2009[update].
Kevin David Mitnick (born on August 6, 1963) is an American computer security consultant, author, and hacker. In the late 20th century, he was convicted of various computer and communications-related crimes. At the time of his arrest, he was the most-wanted computer criminal in the United States.
At age 12, Mitnick used social engineering to bypass the punchcard system used in the Los Angeles bus system. After a friendly bus driver told him where he could buy his own ticket punch, he could ride any bus in the greater LA area using unused transfer slips he found in the trash. Social engineering became his primary method of obtaining information, including user names and passwords and modem phone numbers.
Mitnick first gained unauthorized access to a computer network in 1979, at 16, when a friend gave him the phone number for the Ark, the computer system Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) used for developing their RSTS/E operating system software. He broke into DEC's computer network and copied their software, a crime he was charged with and convicted of in 1988. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Near the end of his supervised release, Mitnick hacked into Pacific Bell voice mail computers. After a warrant was issued for his arrest, Mitnick fled, becoming a fugitive for two and a half years.

How easy would it be to have an inside hack of its own social media accounts, release information that, according to the Washington Post, was already publicly available, and use the incident to spread fear and bolster calls for increased control of the internet?

Feds propose crackdown on internet freedoms following Sony, CENTCOM hacks
President Barack Obama and other lawmakers are calling for stricter cyber security measures following the recent hacking of Sony, which the government claims was carried out by North Korea. Activists are seeing the incident as nothing more than an excuse to launch a crackdown on internet and other freedoms, however, saying that the proposed rules wouldn’t even have prevented the recent attacks. Eric B. Delisle, security expert and CEO of iCloak.org, explains to RT’s Ben Swann how the government is ignoring the privacy rights of citizens.

US CENTCOM Twitter Hack: ISIS or NSA?
Who done it?
At the same time President Obama delivered a speech on cyber security and consumer cyber protection, the Twitter and YouTube accounts of US Central Command were compromised.
The media reported that the culprit was ISIS or ISIS sympathizers. For about 40 minutes, the US CENTCOM social media pages were littered with ISIS propaganda that included threats to soldiers and their families.
Following the Sony data hack, certain legislators have pushed to renew CISPA, or similar "cyber security" legislation.
Is the timing of this most recent incident purely coincidental?

Obama is expected to address cyber security again at the State of the Union where he is set to continue drumming up support for two new pieces of legislation on cyber security he is about to propose.

On the very day and hour that President Obama was delivering a cybersecurity speech, hackers claiming to be affiliated with ISIS took over the social media accounts of the U.S. Central Command. Just one more "hack" to add to the growing list of cyber security intrusions that will be exploited to push for CISPA-style legislation and an internet kill switch.

The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group and the threat they pose to Iraq, Syria, the region, and the wider international community. The destruction of ISIL targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the terrorist group's ability to project terror and conduct operations.

CENTCOM Just So Happens to Get Hacked As Obama Pushes Cyber Security Legislation?
http://www.undergroundworldnews.com
Dahboo7 On Zeekly: http://zeeklytv.com/user/Dahboo77
So the hack attack just so happened to come JUST as President Obama was addressing the nation on, what else? Cyber security.
Really? How serendipitous. In fact, if you look serendipitous in the dictionary, this situation might be in there as a textbook example.
Obama is expected to address cyber security again at the State of the Union where he is set to continue drumming up support for two new pieces of legislation on cyber security he is about to propose.
And now he’s telling Americans that these attacks pose a “direct threat to the economic security of American families.”
Wired reported, “The president cited the recent hacks at Target, Home Depot and Sony as primary reasons why Congress should pass the Personal Data Notification and Protection Act. The bill would help unify a multitude of state breach laws that currently exist. Lawmakers have tried for nearly a decade to pass a federal bill to replace the patchwork of state laws, but have repeatedly failed, in part because either the laws didn’t go far enough or went too far.”
So for ten years they’ve wanted to pass more federal laws to replace state laws, but they haven’t been able to — now the Sony hack (which looks like a psyop) and the oh-so-timely CENTCOM hack — and bam — more laws?

President Barack Obama says U.S. forces in Iraq "do not and will not" have a combat mission as part of the effort against Islamic State militants.
Obama received a briefing Wednesday from officers at U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida. That command oversees military efforts in the Mideast.
The president says the fight against the Islamic State group cannot be America's alone and will require a broad coalition.
He says some nations will assist the U.S. with airstrikes and others will help train forces.
On Tuesday, the top U.S. military officer said American ground troops may be needed to battle the militants if Obama's current stra

Coalition forces took control of Baghdad's airport early on Friday, and have renamed it, said Brigadier General Vincent Brooks, CENTCOM deputy director of operations.
In a briefing to journalists in Qatar, Brooks said the airport had been renamed from Saddam International Airport to Baghdad International Airport.
Brooks said that the first marine expeditionary force continued the attack towards Baghdad and destroying remnants of the Baghdad republican guard unit near al-Kut.
"In the south, UK forces continued to expand the area influenced by the coalition. Their efforts to rid Basra of regime death squads are effective and they are ongoing," said brooks.
Brooks also showed aerial video of an attack on an Iraqi military complex with command and control facilities in western Iraq.
He also released stills of weapons and ammunition found inside an agricultural building in a neighbourhood of al-Najaf.
The briefing was also shown stills of bottles on shelves in a suspected nuclear biological and chemical training school which was found by the US Coastguard yesterday (Thursday).
The US Coastguard is deployed to the Gulf as part of the maritime force.

President Barak Obama addressed soldiers at CentCom repeating that there will be no American troops
On Tuesday, the top U.S. military officer said American ground troops may be needed to battle the militants if Obama's current strategy fails.

The floods that began nearly a month ago with hammering monsoon rains in the northwest have affected more than 17 (m) million people, the UN estimates.
Most of the 1,500 deaths occurred early in the flooding, but the crisis still is growing.
The widespread misery caused by the floods has triggered worries about social unrest, food riots or even a challenge to the government's rule before its term ends in 2013.
The Pakistani army on Tuesday continued to deliver relief packages by helicopter to the flood-ravaged areas of Punjab province.
Pakistan's national health coordinator said the medical situation in the wake of the devastating floods was under control as medical staff worked to treat the thousands of victims.
In the Sukkur region of Sindh province, one of the worst hit flood areas, hundreds of children, mostly suffering from gastrological problems, were being treated in the civil hospital.
Hazoor Bux, Chief Medical Officer for the area, said the hospital had treated around five or six hundred children in the past three days.
"We are providing clean water, ORT (oral rehydration therapy) and all necessary medicines," Bux said.
Local charities and international agencies are providing food, water, medicine and shelter to the displaced.
In Sukkur, international charity Save the Children were providing basic healthcare to families at a camp for displaced people.
But (m) millions have received little or no help, and aid officials have warned that widespread outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera now pose a threat.

About 800-thousand people have been cut off by floods in Pakistan and are only reachable by air, the United Nations said on Tuesday, adding it needs at least 40 more helicopters to ferry lifesaving aid to increasingly desperate people.
The appeal was an indication of the massive problems facing the relief effort in Pakistan more than three weeks after the floods hit the country, affecting more than 17 (m) million people and raising concerns about possible social unrest and political instability.
Earlier, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said hundreds of health facilities had been damaged and tens of thousands of medical workers displaced and the country's chief meteorologist warned that it would be two weeks until the Indus River - the focus of the flooding still sweeping through the country - returns to normal levels.
The floods began with hammering monsoon rains in the northwest and have swept southwards.
Many of those cut off are in the mountainous northwest, where roads and bridges have been swept away.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that about 700-thousand Pakistanis have been forced into makeshift settlements just in the southern province of Sindh.
On Tuesday Pakistan navy boats rescued people stranded by flood waters in the Shadadkot region of Sindh.
One elderly man could not stop from crying as he explained that he had lost everything.
"My goat, my chickens my dog, all of these left in my house. I could not do anything; they will all die," he said through his tears.
Meanwhile on Tuesday the Pakistani army continued to deliver relief packages by helicopter to the flood-ravaged areas of Punjab province.
Elsewhere in the Thatta region of Sindh province, labourers and local residents piled up rocks to try and prevent further flooding at the Sohna Hilaya Dam.
In Islamabad on Tuesday, Gilani met with US officials to discuss health issues in the flood zone.

A convoy of Russian diplomats, including the ambassador to Iraq, came under fire on Sunday as they were evacuating from Baghdad, the Kremlin said.
The vehicles came under fire as they were moving towards the Syrian border and several people were wounded, said the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Russian officials had long ago evacuated most of the embassy's staff, but a core team had remained until Sunday, including the ambassador.
President Vladimir Putin has been informed about the incident, the Kremlin press service said.
The Foreign Ministry said it urgently called in the U.S. and Iraqi ambassadors and asked them to take all measures necessary to guarantee Russian citizens' safety in Iraq, to investigate the circumstances of the attack and punish those responsible.
The ministry said there were wounded but had no information on how many.
As he left the Foreign Ministry building, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow said the U.S. government was investigating the incident and trying to gather information from allied commanders in the area. He said the U.S. side would do its best to expedite the diplomats' evacuation.
Vershbow confirmed that the United States had been aware of the planned evacuation ahead of time.
At Central Command, Vincent Brooks, deputy director of operations, said details were unclear but they wanted to, "absolutely get to the bottom" of the reports.
On Wednesday, Russia protested against American airstrikes that allegedly targeted a Baghdad neighbourhood where the Russian Embassy was located. Russia did not report any casualties in connection with the strikes.

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Major General Gene Renuart, US Cencom Director of Operations:
"It was, I think, a clear statement of the ability of the coalition forces to move into Baghdad at times and places of their choosing, and to establish their presence really wherever they need to in the city. And those kinds of operations I believe will continue."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Major General Gene Renuart, US Cencom Director of Operations:
"The airport gives us a fairly substantial area to operate from, and I believe we will continue to operate from that field whether we make it a main base of operations or not, time will tell. With respect to security on the on airfield, the Third ID (Infantry Division) folks, elements of the 101st (Airborne Division), have I think secured the airfield to a fairly good degree, that does not mean there is not a threat from artillery, from enemy forces who have continued to attack through the course of today to varying degrees in varying sizes, but with no success. There are a number of sites on the airfield that we want to make sure we spend extra time to ensure there's not booby-traps and those kinds of things, but we feel like we can operate on the airfield with ease."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Major General Gene Renuart, US Cencom Director of Operations:
"We were able to take advantage of superiority in the skies to prepare the battlefield and as the land forces moved through they still found substantial Republican Guard capability, and in many cases those forces fought hard. But they were more isolated, they were not well-organised, and I think that.. that is a direct result of the combined arms team that prepared that battlefield before the forces actually moved into the area."
10. Wide shot of Renuart speaking at briefing
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Major General Gene Renuart, US Cencom Director of Operations:
"The challenge with that were pockets of very intense fighting, as I've mentioned we had a task force that moved through the city, made up of both Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Abrams tanks. The fight through there was characterised by a number irregular forces mixed with Republican Guard or Special Republican Guard infantry fighting positions, rocket-propelled grenades, nests of irregular forces and technical vehicles that I described earlier, and anti-aircraft artillery weapons that were used in a direct-fire mode against our forces, so 23-millimetre, 57-millimetre anti-aircraft cannons that were used in a direct fire mode against our forces. It was, as was reported, intense fighting in areas, on the other hand in some areas people were standing on the sidewalk waving to us. So clearly there is confusion in Baghdad, clearly there is some chaos in terms of the command and control and ability of the military defending Baghdad. On the other hand there are people who appear to acknowledge the presence of coalition forces favorably."

GWT: Five soldiers killed in suicide attack, Centcom reax
VIDEOPHONE QUALITY
1. Various of 1st Brigade, American 3rd Infantry Division vehicles encamped in the desert north of Najaf
2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Colonel Will Grimsley, Commander of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division:
"Earlier this morning, of course it's mid afternoon here, soldiers at a routine checkpoint stopped a civilian car as we've been doing - working hard to separate the difference between these combatants if you like in civilians clothes and other things who have been using a variety of vehicles - trying to separate them from the local civilian population here. They stopped the vehicle at the roadblock, that has it clearly marked in Arabic that it is a roadblock, the driver beckoned them a little bit closer and as the soldiers approached covered by fighting vehicles the driver detonated a bomb killing himself and the four soldiers."
3. General views of the 3rd Infantry Division camp
4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Colonel Will Grimsley, Commander of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division:
"Well, it's not going to change the tactics. We know how to do this and we've been doing it very well. What I think is important to remember is we continue to place force protection as our highest priority, but that doesn't mean we're going to back into little holes and hide because that's not why we're here. The local population that's here and happy that we're here - they tell us all the time, they've been feeling the same kind of terrorist repression for years and now unfortunately it's hit American soldiers. I think it only tightens the resolve of why we're here."
5. General views of 3rd Infantry Division camp
STORYLINE:
A suicide bomber killed four American soldiers in an attack Saturday north of the city of Najaf, a US military officer said.
The attack occurred at a US checkpoint on the highway north of Najaf.
A taxi stopped close to the checkpoint, and the driver waved for help. Five soldiers approached the car, and it exploded killing four of the servicemen.
Colonel Will Grimsley of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division said that force protection remained the highest priority but that his troops were going to get on with the job they'd been sent to do which was liberate Iraq.
US Central Command in Doha, Qatar, confirmed the incident but had no other details.
The suicide bombing was the first against coalition forces since the military campaign in Iraq began.

1. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld walks out of TV studio and walks up to microphones
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Rumsfeld, US Defence Secretary:
"In terms of the two questions you posed, each are false. The number of forces is a judgement that was made as a result of General Franks developing a plan, working it with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presenting it to me and the National Security Council and the President. It has been approved by everyone who has had a look at it. It's been described as an excellent plan. I'd be delighted to take credit for it but it wouldn't be fair because it is a product that is essentially General Franks', but certainly the result of a lot of thought from a lot of very fine military planners."
3. Cutaway of Rumsfeld speaking to reporters
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Rumsfeld, US Defence Secretary:
"Resistance that has been encountered has been in pockets quite stiff. It's going to get more difficult. As we move closer to Baghdad there is no question but that you are going to begin confronting the Republican Guard. And I would suspect that the most dangerous and difficult days are still ahead of us. You say: 'wouldn't you like more troops on the ground?' There are more troops on the ground, and they're coming in every day. This has been planned - that was what his plan was. I haven't signed a new deployment order in days. These are deployments - that people were alerted months ago, they were brought on active duty, they were trained, they have been loading their ships, they have been sending their ships over there, they have been loading themselves into airplanes and flying over there. And it's a steady stream of people. And there will be as many people brought into that country as is necessary. But the one thing you can be certain of - it's going to end, and its going to end with the Iraqi people liberated. And we will have done it - we hope and pray - in a way that we're proud of, with a minimum loss of human life on our side, the coalition side, as well as on the side of the innocent Iraqi people who in many respects are hostages to that vicious regime."
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Donald Rumsfeld, US Defence Secretary
"The British forces are doing a superb job. There is just no question of it. Basra, at the present time, is still not completely subdued. But the British forces are in there, they are getting increasing intelligence from local people in that city telling them where the death squads are, where they can find these people who are shooting people. I shouldn't predict a time, but I can just tell you that the - no I'm not going to mention how long it will take. But they are doing a great job, believe me."

01/12: U.S. military Twitter account hacked; Is "Selma's" portrayal of LBJ historically accurate?
JANUARY 12, 2015, 6:30 PM|A group calling itself the Cyber Caliphate took over CENTCOM's Twitter account and tweeted threats to American military. At the same time, CENTCOM's YouTube channel began showing ISIS propaganda videos. The attack only hit the Pentagon's social media channels, so some say it amounts to no more than a "gotcha" attack. David Martin reports; Six months after witnessing President Lyndon Johnson outlaw segregation in July 1964, Martin Luther King, Jr. was back at the White House seeking support for voting rights. In the movie "Selma," Johnson and King's relationship is confrontational. Michelle Miller investigates the historical accuracy of the film.

How easy would it be to have an inside hack of its own social media accounts, release information that, according to the Washington Post, was already publicly available, and use the incident to spread fear and bolster calls for increased control of the internet?

Moments after President Barack Obama on Monday announced a series of steps to protect private information from increasingly sophisticated online threats, pro-Islamic State hackers took over the US Central Command’s Twitter account, posting threats and the personal information for multiple military commanders. RT’s Gayane Chichakyan takes a look at whether or not military networks escaped damage.

"The land component (of coalition forces) attacked further into the defences of Baghdad seizing key objectives in the process. Concurrently operations continue to eliminate paramilitaries and regime elements remaining in urban areas within the zone of attack. In the south, UK forces continued to expand the area influenced by the coalition. Their efforts to rid Basra of regime death squads are effective and they are ongoing."
4. Cutaway media
5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Brigadier General Vincent Brooks, CENTCOM Deputy Director of Operations:
"The first marine expeditionary force continued its attack towards Baghdad destroying remnants of the Baghdad republican guard unit near al-Kut and elements of the al-Neida republican guard division between al-Kut and Baghdad. The attack continues. Fifth core attacked Iraqi forces on the approach to Baghdad and seized several key intersections on the south side of the city. The attack continued through the night and by dawn this morning the coalition had seized the international airport west of Baghdad formally known as Saddam International Airport. The airport now has a new name: Baghdad International Airport and it is a gateway to the future of Iraq."
6. Cutaway media
7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Brigadier General Vincent Brooks, CENTCOM Deputy Director of Operations:
"The airport gives us a number of things. First it prevents the departure of regime leaders, with it being in our possession. It is an airport, so in due time it is something that could be used for air operations when we decide to put it back into operation and certainly that is important, either for current military operations or for future operations after conflict is complete. Most importantly we have preserved it for the future of Iraq and that is the most significant part of what we will get out of having that terrain in our possession."

STORYLINE:

"The first video shows an anti-aircraft artillery system that is firing at a coalition aircraft, you'll actually see that in this film."
4. Aerial black-and-white video, shot from coalition aircraft, showing explosions and smoke as Brooks describes the coalition attacks
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy director of operations:
(Over aerial video shots)
"This target was west of Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, on the 2nd of April. What you just saw was two sets of black smoke, that was the firing of the anti-aircraft system at this aircraft that was conducting the attack. So just a reminder that these are not benign actions that occur, these are combat actions, and our pilot have done very very well, and been very effective. Lets continue with the tape please.. (tape shows explosions) -- He won the duel."
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy director of operations:
(Over aerial video shots)
"The second video shows a regime aircraft located near the al-Tukadam airfield, this was struck on April 4. As I mentioned, we're attacking all identified aircraft, to prevent them from flying for combat purposes, but also to prevent the potential delivery of weapons of mass destruction, chemicals particularly, from aircraft."
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy director of operations:
(Over aerial still shots)
"I also have to products to show you from recent precision attacks against assets of the regime. The first one is a regime command and control facility struck on April 3rd. What I'd highlight on this one is that there were 21 weapons that were used, each one represented by a blue arrow. This is the pre-strike.. and the post-strike please.. varying degrees of destruction because the weapons system chosen have varying degrees of explosive capabilities, and that's by deliberate design."
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy director of operations:
(Over aerial still shots)
"The second image I want to show you is a command and control facility near Salman Pak near the south of Baghdad. This was struck on the 3rd of April. Two weapons in this case.. post-strike.. and the split."
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy director of operations:
"As we are now able to operate around or within Baghdad, we see indications that the regime continues to put civilians and civilian areas at increasing risk. The following photo will show you Iraqi military equipment which the regime has intentionally placed next to the buildings of a residential area. (over aerial still shot) Although it's a little difficult to see, each blue arrow shows a piece of military equipment that's pushed right up against the side of the building. In some cases there are multiple pieces of equipment. This is a residential area, we don't know if these are houses per-se, but clearly is a residential area."
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy director of operations:
"We however will continue to discriminate in our targeting, we will continue to be selective and seek precision in all we do, but it is clear at this point that the risk is increasing to the civilian population because of decisions made by the regime leaders."
11. Wide shot of Brooks speaking at briefing

On Tuesday, the top U.S. military officer said American ground troops may be needed to battle the militants if Obama's current strategy fails.
