Tadmur, English pronunciation: /ˌpælˈmaɪrə/) was an ancient city in central Syria. In antiquity, it was an important city located in an oasis 215 km northeast of Damascus and 180 km southwest of the Euphrates at Deir ez-Zor. It had long been a vital caravan stop for travellers crossing the Syrian desert and was known as the Bride of the Desert. The earliest documented reference to the city by its Semitic name Tadmor, Tadmur or Tudmur (which means "the town that repels" in Amorite and "the indomitable town" in Aramaic) is recorded in Babylonian tablets found in Mari.
Though the ancient site fell into disuse after the 16th century, it is still known as Tadmor in Arabic (aka Tedmor), and there is a newer town of the same name next to the ruins. The Palmyrenes constructed a series of large-scale monuments containing funerary art such as limestone slabs with human busts representing the deceased.
Palmyrans bore Aramaic names, and worshipped a variety of deities from Mesopotamia (Marduk and Ruda), Syria (Hadad, Baʿal, Astarte), Arabia (Allāt) and Greece (Athena). Palmyrans were originally speakers of Aramaic but later shifted to the Greek language. At the time of the Islamic conquests Palmyra was inhabited by several Arab tribes, primarily the Qada'ah and Kalb.

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria.
The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon ha

(CNN)The already burgeoning list of appalling acts by ISIS appears to have grown even longer: the Islamic extremist group has reportedly blown up a nearly 2,000-year-old temple in the historic ruins of Palmyra in Syria.
Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria's director-general of antiquities and museums, told the Syrian state news agency SANA that local sources in Palmyra informed him that ISIS members rigged the Temple of Baalshamin with large quantities of explosives and detonated them.
There was uncertainty -- not unusual amid the chaos of the Syrian conflict -- over when exactly the damage was done to the temple, which dates from the first century AD

A Closer Look To The City Of Palmyra
Palmyra /ˌpælˈmaɪərə/, (Aramaic: ܬܕܡܘܪܬܐ; Arabic: تدمر; Hebrew: תַּדְמוֹר; Ancient Greek: Παλμύρα), was an ancient Semitic city, located in Homs Governorate, Syria. Dating back to the Neolithic, Palmyra was first attested in the early second millennium BC, as a caravan stop for travelers crossing the Syrian Desert. The city is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and in the annals of the Assyrian kings, then it was incorporated into the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire, followed by the Roman Empire which brought great prosperity. Palmyra's wealth allowed the construction of many monumental projects. By the third century, Palmyra was turned into a pros

ISIL destroys famous lion statue outside a museum in Palmyra
The country's antiquities director says the statue, known as the Lion of Al-Lat, was an irreplaceable piece that was destroyed last week. He said this was the most serious crime the terrorist group has committed against Palmyra's heritage. Palmyra is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site which was captured by ISIL on May 21. The limestone statue dated back to the 1st century BC and was discovered in 1977. So far, Palmyra’s most famous sites have been left intact, but there have been reports that some of them were destroyed or smuggled out of the city by ISIL militants.

Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

ISIS reported to have blown up ancient temple in Palmyra
(CNN)The already burgeoning list of appalling acts by ISIS appears to have grown even longer: the Islamic extremist group has reportedly blown up a nearly 2,000-year-old temple in the historic ruins of Palmyra in Syria.
Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria's director-general of antiquities and museums, told the Syrian state news agency SANA that local sources in Palmyra informed him that ISIS members rigged the Temple of Baalshamin with large quantities of explosives and detonated them.
There was uncertainty -- not unusual amid the chaos of the Syrian conflict -- over when exactly the damage was done to the temple, which dates from the first century AD.
The SANA report Sunday didn't specify when the explosion took place. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict, reported on the same day that its sources said ISIS blew up the temple about a month ago.
The Syrian government's Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums is trying to find out more from people in Palmyra about the extent of the damage, SANA reported.
The reports come less than a week after the observatory said ISIS militants had publicly beheaded Khaled al-As'ad, the former general manager for antiquities and museums in Palmyra.
ISIS fighters seized control of Palmyra and the nearby modern town of Tadmur in May, prompting fears over what the militants would do to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Track record of trashing heritage sites
On top of its atrocities of rape, enslavement and bloodthirsty killing, ISIS has also blown up other historical sites and destroyed or sold antiquities in the parts of Syria and Iraq that it controls. The group says it considers religious shrines idolatrous.
Dedicated to the Phoenician god of rain and fertility, the Temple of Baalshamin was a small shrine, the only part of a larger compound that survived the centuries somewhat intact, according to the Lonely Planet travel guide.
Syria's Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums had previously said that ISIS had destroyed two ancient Muslim shrines, one in Palmyra and another a few kilometers away.
Other monuments, temples and historic buildings have been mined, and a statue of a lion at the entrance to Palmyra's museum has been destroyed.
Elsewhere, ISIS has released footage of its fighters smashing artifacts in the museum of the Iraqi city of Mosul and using sledgehammers, power tools and explosives to destroy the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud.
CNN's Brian Walker contributed to this report.

Travel video about destination Syria.
Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Top Syrian commander visits military posts around Palmyra
The chief of the general staff of Syrian Arab army has visited military posts around the ancient city of Palmyra which has been under ISIL control since late May. General Ali Abdullah Ayoub visited a military airbase near the city and was briefed on the military operations there. The top Syrian officer said that the fight against ISIL terrorists will continue until their full elimination. Over the past several days, Syrian troops have pushed the terrorists out of several regions near the city in the central Homs province. Meanwhile, Syrian army backed by Hezbollah fighters has made advances in the fight against terrorists near the town of Zabadani on the Syrian-Lebanese border. They managed to retake control of the Zallah region south of the town which has been under ISIL’s control since 2011.

By the third century, Palmyra was turned into a prosperous metropolis, with a strong army capable of defeating the Sassanid empire in 260. Following the victory, Palmyra's chief Odaenathus was proclaimed king but was assassinated in 267. He was succeeded by his minor sons, under the regency of queen Zenobia, who started invading the Roman eastern provinces in 270. The rebellion was masked by a nominal subordination to Rome. However, the situation escalated and the Palmyrene rulers adopted the imperial titles in 271. Roman emperor Aurelian defeated Palmyra in 272, and destroyed it in 273 after a failed second rebellion. Palmyra became a minor city under the rule of the Byzantines, Rashiduns, Ummayads, Abbassids, Mamluks, and their vassals. After being destroyed by the Timurids in 1400, Palmyra remained a small village under the rule of the Ottomans until 1918, then the Syrian kingdom, followed by the French mandate. In 1929 the French started evacuating the villagers into the newly built village of Tadmur. The evacuation was completed in 1932 and the site became abandoned and available for excavations.
The Palmyrenes were mainly a mix of Arameans, Amorites and Arabs, in addition to Jewish and Greek minorities. The society was tribal and the inhabitants spoke their own dialect of Aramaic, in addition to Greek. Both of the languages were replaced by Arabic following the Arab conquest in 634. Palmyra's local culture was influenced by the Greco-Roman and Persian cultures, which produced a distinctive art and architecture. The city's inhabitants worshiped local deities, in addition to Mesopotamian and Arab gods. They later converted to Christianity in the fourth century, followed by Islam in the second half of the first millennium.
The Palmyrene political organization was based on the Greek city-state model. It was governed by a senate responsible for both the public works and the military. After gaining the status of a Colonia in the third century, Palmyra incorporated Roman institutions to its system before adopting a monarchical system in 260. Palmyra gained its wealth from caravan trade. The Palmyrenes were renowned merchants who established colonies along the Silk Road, and conducted their operations all around the Roman empire.
Palmyra is located 215 km (134 mi) to the northeast of the Syrian capital Damascus, in an oasis, surrounded by palms of which twenty varieties were reported. A small Wadi named al-Qubur, crosses the area, it flows from the hills in the west and passes the city, before disappearing in the eastern gardens of the oasis. To the south of the Wadi, a spring named Efqa is located. Pliny the Elder described the town in the 70s AD, as famous for its location, the richness of its soil, and the water springs that surrounded it, making the agricultural and herding activities possible. "Tadmor" is the Semitic and earliest attested native name of the city, it appeared in the first half of the second millennium BC. The etymology of "Tadmor" is vague, Albert Schultens considered it to be derived from the Semitic word for dates ("Tamar"), in reference to the Palm trees that surround the city. The name "Palmyra" appeared during the early first century AD, in the works of Pliny the Elder, and was used throughout the Greco-Roman world. The general view holds that "Palmyra" is derived from "Tadmor" either as an alteration, which was supported by Schultens, or as a translation using the Greek word for palm ("Palame"), which is supported by Jean Starcky. Michael Patrick O'Connor argued for a Hurrian origin of both "Palmyra" and "Tadmor", citing the incapability of explaining the alterations to the theorized roots of both names, which are represented in the adding of a -d- to "Tamar" and a -ra- to "palame". According to this theory, "Tadmor" is derived from the Hurrian word "Tad", meaning "to love", + a typical Hurrian mid vowel rising (mVr) formant "Mar". "Palmyra" is derived from the word "Pal", meaning "to know", + the same mVr formant "Mar".

Severe Storm Moving Into Palmyra, NJ (60-80mph winds)
Video of the storm moving in across the river into Palmyra, NJ, with plenty of lightning and 60-80mph winds (especially as they hit at around the 45 second mark). You can see tons of dust kicked up and even begins to obscure the bridge.

Palmyra Atoll, Line Isl., provides a unique opportunity to assess how a natural coral reef ecosystem functions in the absence of major anthropogenic impact. This is what it looks like...
For the research check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_1iXEcMxwg
While current estimates place shark biomass at 60% of total fish biomass at Palmyra, these estimates have relied on visual surveys that are plagued by a lack of comparability and reproducibility. Previous abundance estimates are therefore useful to qualitatively describe the relative population size on this pristine reef, but they lack the precision necessary for a quantitative understanding of trophic structure and function.
To address this knowledge gap, the Nature Conservancy and the Palmyra Atoll Research Consortium are collaborating to complete a mark-recapture reef shark population study. The goal of the study is to establish a baseline measure of mature and sub-adult grey and blacktip reef shark abundance absent human impacts. Palmyra Atoll; Ono Monitoring and Tagging Research HD
Watch in HD!! (gear icon)
Palmyra Atoll, Line Isl., provides a unique opportunity to assess how a natural coral reef ecosystem functions in the absence of major anthropogenic impacts.
The Nature Conservancy and the Palmyra Atoll Research Consortium are collaborating on a research program based on monitoring and tagging the pelagic predator and common game fish, the Ono or Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri).
The goal of the study is to see where these fishes go, what they do, and if caught again, their growth rates and other biological factors. By placing an internal acoustic tag, which pings at a known frequency, scientists can trace where the fish swims via acoustic receivers placed in the water. Researchers log these receivers and can pick up the fishes unique signal. A series of these pings can give researchers a map of where the fish is and where it is going. External dart tags (seen as green in the video) tell fishermen and scientists that this is a special fish if caught again.
By knowing more information about these fishes lifecycle and biology managers and scientists can better manage these important and beautiful fishes to ensure a healthy an abundant population.
All footage shot with a GoPro and edited through iMovie. Music by Emancipator - First Snow (I do not own any rights to this music). Additional footage from K. Pollack. Thank you to my sponsorships; Spy Optics and Lifeproof Cases.

A brief preview of life on one of the most remote nature preserves on the planet. Normally Palmyra Atolls population hovers around 6 or 7 researchers, but during the few days the Stanford at Sea crew was parked in the atolls lagoon, that number was momentarily boosted to closer to 50. While working and exploring the once military base of WWII, we tried our best to make our presence unknown.
