Xinhua employs more than 10,000 people, operates 107 foreign bureaus worldwide, and maintains 31 bureaus in China—one for each province, plus a military bureau. As most of the newspapers in China cannot afford to station correspondents abroad, or even in every Chinese province, they rely on Xinhua feeds to fill their pages. People's Daily, for example, uses Xinhua material for approximately 25 percent of its stories. Xinhua is a publisher as well as a news agency—it owns more than 20 newspapers and a dozen magazines, and it prints in eight languages: Chinese, English, Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese, Arabic and Japanese.
Xinhua News Agency has officially unveiled its global social media presence.

China's Xinhua News Agency launched a new line of information products on Thursday to help global investors form better partnerships under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Xinhua President Cai Mingzhao says, the new "Xinhua Silk Road" products, designed and managed by Xinhua, aim to provide a platform for commodity trade and investment cooperation among governments and companies in countries along the Belt and Road.
The Internet-based package is currently available in both Chinese and English, including four major products and services -- the Silk Road Database, Xinhua Credit Reports, Consulting and Thinktank Services and a "business match-making" instant messaging system.
The Belt and Road Initiative, proposed by China in 2013, is a trade and infrastructure network that includes the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
The network connects Asia, Europe and Africa and passes through more than 60 countries and regions with a population of about 4.4 billion.

China Blacklists 4 Citizens for 'Uncivilised Tourist Behaviour'
Four Chinese have been punished and blacklisted for their "uncivilised tourist behaviour" at a Bangkok airport, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) said.
According to the administration, a flight delay at the Bangkok airport earlier this month led to dissatisfaction and uproar among Chinese tourists, Xinhua news agency reported.
The four blacklisted tourists behaved badly, inciting other tourists to disobey public order at the airport, which severely tarnished the image of China.
The four will stay on the "bad behaviour record" blacklist for two to three years, the CNTA said.
The "bad behaviour record" was first introduced by the CNTA in March this year amid growing concerns about the bad manners of some Chinese tourists both at home and abroad.
It remains unclear how the "blacklist" status will affect the offenders, but experts say the rule functions more as a warning.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has made an important instruction, ordering all-out rescue efforts following the accident in which a passenger ship carrying 458 people sank Monday night in the Hubei section of China's Yangtze River.
Premier Li Keqiang is heading to Hubei Province to direct the rescue work.
The Xinhua news agency reports that Chinese president Xi Jinping has issued an order for “all-out rescue efforts” while Premier Li Keqiang ordered a work team from the state council, China’s cabinet, to direct search-and-rescue work.
Efforts have faced difficulty due to bad weather, Xinhua said.
Li, along with vice-premier Ma Kai and state councilor Yang Jing are on their way to the site of the sinking.
Xi has ordered the provinces of Hubei and Chongqing to join in the rescue efforts and, Xinhua reports, “properly handle the aftermath”.
China’s transport ministry and other government departments were also told to throw all available resources into the rescue effort and for the treatment of those saved, Xinhua said.
Xi has also called for officials to heed lessons and take more effective measures to protect people’s lives, Xinhua said.
BEIJING – A small cruise ship carrying more than 450 people, many of them elderly, sank overnight in the Yangtze River during a storm in southern China, and eight people have been rescued, the state broadcaster CCTV reported Tuesday.
Rescue work was underway but low visibility due to fog was hampering the search, CCTV said. The boat was traveling from Nanjing upstream to the southwestern city of Chongqing when it sank Monday night in Hubei province, the report said.
The official Xinhua News Agency quoted the captain and chief engineer, who were both rescued, as saying the ship sank quickly after being caught in a cyclone. The Communist Party-run People's Daily said the ship sank within two minutes.
CCTV said the four-level ship was carrying 406 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and 47 crew members. It sank in the Damazhou waterway section, where the river is 15 meters (about 50 feet) deep.
The broadcaster said most of the passengers were 50 to 80 years of age.
CCTV video footage of the river showed calm waters Tuesday morning, with dozens of rescue personnel in bright orange vests gathered on the shore. Several rescue ships were searching the waters, and submersible craft had been deployed.
The channel said seven of the survivors swam to shore and alerted authorities of the sinking.

State news agency Xinhua said on Friday that China is planning an international tourism zone in its northeastern border area with Russia and North Korea, in Pyongyang's latest push for new investment.
According to Xinhua, Jiang Chaoliang, governor of China's northeastern Jilin province, said the province would draw up a blueprint for the Tumen River Delta international tourism area this year.
The Tumen River divides China and North Korea.
Xinhua said officials are exploring a management model of the tourism zone that would involve China, Russia and North Korea. Xinhua said, citing officials, that visitors shall enter the tourism zone without visas and shopping shall be duty-free.
Xinhua said, citing Zhao Xiaojun, director of Jilin Provincial Tourism Administration, that in the long run, South Korea, Japan and Mongolia will join the tourism area via highways, railways and air routes.

Yangtze ship disaster: Chinese salvagers right Eastern Star
Chinese salvagers have fully righted the ship which capsized on the Yangtze River, on which more than 400 people are thought to have died.
The Eastern Star overturned late on Monday after being caught in a storm.
Just 14 of the 456 passengers and crew are known to have survived what looks set to be China's worst shipping disaster in more than 60 years of Communist rule.
Authorities say the chances of finding anyone still alive were "slim".
"In a situation in which the overall judgment is that there is no chance of people being alive, we could start the work of righting the boat," Transport Ministry Spokesperson Xu Chengguang had told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.
Rescue workers on the upturned hull, which was just barely visible over the brown waters of the Yangtze, were towered over by two cranes.
Hooks were welded onto the ship and a net stretched around the entire structure in preparation for lifting it.
By first light on Friday, the ship could be seen lying on its side with its name visible just above the water. Xinhua state news agency later tweeted a picture of the righted vessel, its roof apparently crushed.
As the ship is righted, the focus of emergency workers at the site in Jianli, Hubei province will switch from attempting to find survivors to searching the ship's 150 cabins for bodies.
Mr Xu said on Friday that the next step was to raise the ship entirely above the water to conduct the search.
So far 97 bodies have been recovered, some after three holes were cut into the vessel's upturned hull. The holes were later welded closed in order to preserve the ship's buoyancy.
Chinese President Xi Jinping promised a thorough investigation into the cause of the disaster, after angry relatives protested at the scene.
Authorities tightly controlled access to the site, leading family members and journalists to complain about a lack of information.
The Eastern Star
The 76m-long, 2,200-tonne ship was named Dongfangzhixing in Chinese
It was carrying 405 passengers - mostly elderly tourists but also one three-year-old - as well as five travel agency employees and 46 crew members.
The ship is owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corporation, and passengers had booked their trip through a travel agency in Shanghai.
The cruise left the eastern city of Nanjing in April and was travelling to Chongqing in the south-west via the Three Gorges - a journey of at least 1,500km (930 miles).

Residents from Shenzhen city would be allowed one trip per week to neighboring Hong Kong as of Monday, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing China’s Ministry of Public Security. Visitors from the city didn’t previously face limits.
The change in policy will help ease tensions in Hong Kong, where scuffles have broken out between protesters and parallel traders, who buy daily necessities in the former British colony to resell them on the mainland. The city, which has come to rely on Chinese visitors, may see a 5 percent reduction in tourist spending, Goldman Sachs analysts wrote in a report.
“This policy targets the career parallel traders,” Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying told reporters Monday. “Hong Kong is still a city for tourists from all around the world including those from the mainland.”
The policy change won’t affect Shenzhen residents who have already been granted multiple-entry visas into Hong Kong, and will take some time to take effect, Leung said. Hong Kong plans to run campaigns to lure tourists, he said.
‘Downside Risk’
Shares of Sa Sa International Holdings Ltd., a cosmetics retailer, plunged as much as 9.7 percent to HK$3.91 in Hong Kong trading, the stock’s biggest intraday decline since May. Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd. fell as much as 5.6 percent to HK$8.70.
The restrictions pose a “downside risk” to Hong Kong growth, said Raymond Yeung, a Hong Kong-based economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. who forecasts the city’s gross domestic product to rise 2.9 percent this year. Chinese day-trippers account for about 15 percent of retail spending in the city, and malls and restaurants would be affected, he said.

“The way they handled the policy is too regressive,” said Yeung, who expects total retail sales to stagnate this year. “It would be better if the government addressed the needs of these tourists instead by improving tourism infrastucture such as by building a cross-border shopping area.”
Instead of rich Chinese flying in to purchase luxury items, Hong Kong is seeing more visitors buying shampoo, milk powder and other necessities. The demand has been fueled by concerns about the safety of products sold on the mainland.
Day Trips
Spending on luxury items plunged 14 percent last year, while the sales of medicine, cosmetics and groceries saw as much as a 9.3 percent gain, government data shows.
The trend has led to clashes between protesters and traders in border areas, spurring arrests and demands from lawmakers to curb visits. The incidents have stoked tension with the mainland, after Hong Kong students led months-long street protests demanding more autonomy in local elections.
Leung said that the city government put forth its proposals to limit Chinese visitors in June.
The change in policy would reduce the number of Chinese arrivals by 4.6 million visits, a Hong Kong official said Sunday. Tourists from China jumped 16 percent to 47 million last year, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
Day trips accounted for a record 60 percent of these, compared with 38 percent in 2006.
Cosmetics Affected
The Hong Kong Retail Management Association said in a statement it was worried that the limits sent a message that mainland tourists weren’t welcome in the city. This might lead to a chain reaction and discourage visitors from other Chinese cities as well, the association said.
The restrictions would hurt cosmetics, food and alcohol sales, Goldman Sachs wrote in its report Sunday. Those of jewelry and leather goods would be less affected because they were mostly purchased by overnight tourists, it said.
Sa Sa said the company has no plans to change its expansion strategy and would continue to balance demand from locals and tourists. “We hope the government would consider measures to support healthy and sustainable growth in the retail industry,” it said in a statement.
Chinese visitors to Hong Kong have already been dropping. Arrivals from China fell 14 percent during the recent Ching Ming holiday, the city government said last week.
Two-thirds of the 743 people surveyed in February by the Chinese University of Hong Kong wanted the government to reduce the number of individual Chinese visitors. More than three-fifths of those polled said the tourists have brought inconvenience to their lives, the university said.

The death toll from a typhoon that struck China on the weekend has risen to 19, with four people missing, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.
Seven people were killed in typhoon-triggered tornados in the southern province of Guangdong while seven died in landslides, Xinhua said citing the provincial civil affairs department.
Three fishermen died in boat accidents at sea while one person was found dead in the debris of a house that collapsed during the storm. Four fishermen were missing, Xinhua said.
The storm made landfall in the southern province of Guangdong on Sunday, triggering widespread blackouts, state media said. Winds knocked out power grids along the coast and authorities canceled dozens of flights and suspended high-speed trains.
Guangdong's civil affairs department said the province suffered 23.24 billion yuan ($3.66 billion) in losses from the storm, which affected 3.5 million people and damaged 282,700 hectares of cropland.
One person was also killed by a falling tree in the neighboring province of Guangxi, Xinhua reported. Nearly 1.9 million people in Guangxi suffered losses and 417 homes were destroyed, it said.

The storm made landfall in the southern province of Guangdong on Sunday, triggering widespread blackouts, state media said. Winds knocked out power grids along the coast and authorities cancelled dozens of flights and suspended high-speed trains.
Guangdong's civil affairs department said the province suffered 23.24 billion yuan ($3.66 billion) in losses from the storm, which affected 3.5 million people and damaged 282,700 hectares of cropland.
One person was also killed by a falling tree in the neighbouring province of Guangxi, Xinhua reported. Nearly 1.9 million people in Guangxi suffered losses and 417 homes were destroyed, it said.

Oops! NSFW flick mistaken for real execution by Xinhua News
President Xi is due to visit Boeing's main plane factory in his first state visit to the US, as he looks to highlight the economic importance of China to US firms.
SHANGHAI: US aerospace giant Boeing has reached deals with Chinese firms to sell 300 aircraft and set up a completion centre in China, state media and its local partner said on Wednesday (, as President Xi Jinping began a visit to the United States.
The massive order, which was not immediately confirmed by Boeing, demonstrates the vital importance of the Chinese market despite a growth slowdown that threatens to slow the expansion of air travel.
The state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) also reached an agreement with Boeing to set up a "completion centre" in China for its narrow-body 737 airliners, Xinhua said.
It represents a step-up in Boeing's competition in China with European rival Airbus, which already has a manufacturing presence there.
The Xinhua report, datelined from Seattle where Xi on Tuesday started his first US state visit, gave no details of the models bought by a group of Chinese companies or the value of the sale.
Aviation analyst Shukor Yusof described it as the biggest ever order by a country.
Xi is due to visit Boeing's main aeroplane factory in Washington state on Wednesday.
"China's rapidly growing aviation market plays a crucial role in our current and future success," Boeing chairman Jim McNerney said in a statement last week.
COMAC confirmed to AFP that it will set up a joint venture with Boeing for interior completion, painting and other delivery support services for Chinese customers. "This shows cooperation between Boeing and a Chinese enterprise has been lifted to a major-manufacturer level," it said in a statement.
The wording echoes the "new model of major country relations" phrase that Chinese officials use to describe ties with the US, suggesting parity between the powers.
China is expected to add 6,330 new aircraft worth $950 billion to its commercial fleet by 2034, Boeing said last month in its annual China Current Market Outlook.
"The emerging middle class in China is helping to boost demand," Mohshin Aziz, an analyst at Malayan Banking Bhd., told Bloomberg News. "Most of the planes ordered will be for growth and very few will be for replacement."

Chinese firms sign deal to buy 300 Boeing planes: Xinhua
US giant Boeing has signed deals with Chinese firms to sell 300 aircraft and open a completion centre in the Asian giant, China's official Xinhua news agency reported, as President Xi Jinping began his first state visit to the United States.
The Xinhua report, which was datelined from Seattle, where Xi's trip started on Tuesday, gave no immediate details of the models of the planes bought by a group of Chinese companies or the value of the sale.
But it is likely to be one of the biggest of recent times.
State-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) also signed an agreement with Boeing Tuesday to set up a "completion centre" in China for its 737 airliners, Xinhua said.
Xi is due to visit Boeing's main plane factory in Washington state on Wednesday, as he looks to highlight the importance of China to US firms.
Later in his trip he will travel to Washington DC to meet US President Barack Obama at the White House.
China is expected to add 6,330 new aircraft worth $950 billion to its commercial fleet by 2034, Boeing said last month in its annual China Current Market Outlook.
A report by the Shanghai Securities News on Tuesday said plans for a Boeing factory in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang have been submitted to the central government in Beijing for approval.
A Boeing factory in China would represent a shift in the US giant's strategy in the crucial market, where European rival Airbus has a final assembly operation for medium-range Airbus 320 aircraft in the northern port of Tianjin and plans to open a new completion and delivery centre for long-haul A-330s.
Boeing declined to comment on the Shanghai newspaper report.

Xin Hua Market
98 Anshun Lu, Shanghai, 2013
approx. 45 min, video, Camera: Xu Meng, Starring Xin Hua Market sales personal and Rainer Ganahl. Subtitles Liu Ya-Nan and Rainer Ganahl
This video was specifically made for this occasion, i.e. at Xin Hua Market where the gallery is located as if it were a regular market booth. The film consists of a series of short interviews with vendors from Xin Hua market. This market is a classical quasi-traditional Shanghai Market where things are cheap, hygienic standards low and many clients poor. It is not a market place which is frequented by the new German car driving well off Shanghai middle class. This not so busy market place looks doomed to disappear sooner than later for some new sky high developments like anything else in Shanghai with clean, proper sanitized market halls, not necessarily catering to the remaining poor people of the neighborhood..
The interviews are short and are all based around the question "How is business today?" as if a lesson taken from Ganahl's study material. Like a reporter, the artist asks people about their business, their business history and their opinion about the market. In certain instances depending on the situation personal questions about kids and so on were asked spontaneously. Surprisingly enough, one lady selling raw meet has her daughters study in US colleges something one wouldn't expect given the economics involved in such an operation that seemed not to be supported by her business model and the general impression of that low income market.
Ganahl, who is an autodidact and has been mostly learning Chinese on his own as part of his fine art practice conducted all interviews in his limited Chinese and was aided by his camera man Xu Meng who helped out when necessary.

BEIJING (AP) -- A small cruise ship sank overnight in China's Yangtze River during a storm, leaving at least one person dead and nearly 450 people missing, most of them elderly, state media said Tuesday. Ten people were rescued, the state media reports said.Search teams heard sounds coming from within the partially submerged ship about 12 hours after it went down, state broadcaster CCTV said, but it was not immediately clear whether they amounted to signs of life among the missing. The Communist Party-run People's Daily said the ship sank within two minutes.CCTV said the four-level ship had been carrying 406 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and 47 crew members. Ten people were rescued and one person was confirmed dead, CCTV said. The broadcaster said most of the passengers were 50 to 80 years of age.The ship sank in the Damazhou waterway section, where the river is 15 meters (about 50 feet) deep. The Yangtze is the world's third-longest river.CCTV video footage of the river showed calm waters Tuesday morning, with dozens of rescue personnel in bright orange vests gathered on the shore. Several rescue ships were searching the waters, and submersible craft had been deployed. The channel said seven of the survivors swam to shore and alerted authorities to the sinking.More than 50 boats and 3,000 people were involved in search efforts. The Eastern Star measured 251 feet long (76.5 meters) and 36 feet wide (11 meters) and was capable of carrying a maximum of 534 people, CCTV reported. It is owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp., which focuses on tourism routes in the popular Three Gorges river canyon region.CCTV reported that 6 inches (150 millimeters) of rain had fallen in the region over the past 24 hours.Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is reported to be traveling to the accident site. Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping had ordered a work team of the State Council, the country's Cabinet, to rush to the site to guide the rescue work. 2015 The Associated Press. Chinese ferry sinks in Yangtze river with 458 people aboard – latest updates. President Xi urges all-out rescue efforts following ship-capsizing accident. 长江客轮倾覆现场有大风暴雨 搜救困难
More than 400 people are missing after a Chinese passenger boat sank on the Yangtze river as it was hit by what the captain described as a cyclone
The Eastern Star measured 251 feet long (76.5 meters) and 36 feet wide (11 meters) and was capable of carrying a maximum of 534 people, CCTV reported. It is owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp., which focuses on tourism routes in the popular Three Gorges river canyon region.
CCTV reported that 6 inches (150 millimeters) of rain had fallen in the region over the past 24 hours.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is reported to be traveling to the accident site. Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping had ordered a work team of the State Council, the country's Cabinet, to rush to the site to guide the rescue work.

Seven people were killed and 19 others, including eight Taiwanese, were injured when a huge boulder rolled down a mountainside in south China's Guangxi Zhuang region on Thursday morning. Four people were confirmed dead at the scene, and three others were declared dead after being rushed to hospital after the incident occurred at around 9 a.m in Guilin city, Xinhua news agency reported. A tourist group was visiting the site at the time. The eight Taiwanese, all slightly injured, were being treated at a local hospital. Guilin is famous for its mountainous landscape, with soluble rocks on the mountains prone to landslips, residents said. Visitors are cautioned against landslips at the site where the incident occurred.

More from Bloomberg.com: Russia Stock Analysts Turn Bullish as Earnings Slump to 2009 Low

How is business today ?
