The Great Show at ancient Bagan
Bagan in central Burma is one of the world’s greatest archeological sites, a sight to rival Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat but – for the time being at least – without the visitors. The setting is sublime – a verdant 26 square-mile plain, part-covered in stands of palm and tamarind caught in a bend of the lazy-flowing Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) river and framed by the hazy silver-grey of distant mountains.

Pagodas in Burma (or Myanmar) are tiered structures for Buddhist religious purposes; Theravada Buddhism is the religion of the majority of Burma's population (90%). In all parts of the country where the Burmese people live there are pagodas and Buddhist monasteries. The graceful tapering shape of a pagoda painted white or gilded to a shining gold, is a basic part of any Burmese landscape. Burma is often called the "Land of Pagodas".
Stupas
A stupa, also called a pagoda, is a massive structure, typically with a relic chamber inside. The Bagan stupas or pagodas evolved from earlier Pyu designs, which in turn were based on the stupa designs of the Andhra region, particularly Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda in present-day southeastern India, and to a smaller extent to Ceylon. The Bagan-era stupas in turn were the prototypes for later Burmese stupas in terms of symbolism, form and design, building techniques and even materials.
Originally, an Indian/Ceylonese stupa had a hemispheric body (Pali: anda, "the egg") on which a rectangular box surrounded by a stone balustrade (harmika) was set. Extending up from the top of the stupa was a shaft supporting several ceremonial umbrellas. The stupa is a representation of the Buddhist cosmos: its shape symbolizes Mount Meru while the umbrella mounted on the brickwork represents the world's axis. The brickwork pediment was often covered in stucco and decorated in relief. Pairs or series of ogres as guardian figures ('bilu') were a favourite theme in the Bagan period.
The original Indic design was gradually modified first by the Pyu, and then by Burmans at Bagan where the stupa gradually developed a longer, cylindrical form. The earliest Bagan stupas such as the Bupaya (c. 9th century) were the direct descendants of the Pyu style at Sri Ksetra. By the 11th century, the stupa had developed into a more bell-shaped form in which the parasols morphed into a series of increasingly smaller rings placed on one top of the other, rising to a point. On top the rings, the new design replaced the harmika with a lotus bud. The lotus bud design then evolved into the "banana bud", which forms the extended apex of most Burmese pagodas. Three or four rectangular terraces served as the base for a pagoda, often with a gallery of terra-cotta tiles depicting Buddhist jataka stories. The Shwezigon Pagoda and the Shwesandaw Pagoda are the earliest examples of this type. Examples of the trend toward a more bell-shaped design gradually gained primacy as seen in the Dhammayazika Pagoda (late 12th century) and the Mingalazedi Pagoda (late 13th century)

Yangon which is formerly known as Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar (Burma)) with a population of 4,082,000 (in 2005). The city located at the confluence of Yangon and Bago River, away 30 km from the Gulf of Martaban.
In November 2005, the capital city moved from Yangon to Naypyidaw in Mandalay province. Naypyidaw officially became the new capital of Myanmar since March 26th, 2006.
Compared to other major cities in Southeast Asia, Yangon is relatively underdeveloped. The construction is largely developing due to foreign investment from China and Singapore. Many commercial buildings and houses have been built in the city center. Yangon is the place which has the most colonial buildings in East Asia today. The government office in the building was built in colonial time (such as Myanmar Supreme Court, City Hall, Bogyoke Market and the General Hospital are being planned reinforcement upgrade.

When you're in Yangon, try to get around on foot as much as you can. As long as you don't need to go far, walking is the best way to enjoy the city and its friendly people. The streets are safe for pedestrians, and you'll have lots of locals walking with you. But for longer trips, you'll want to avoid the heat and save your feet. Visitors are not allowed to drive in Yangon, so renting a car isn't an option, but don't let that discourage you--there are still tourist-friendly ways to get around. Taxis are your best bet; price is mostly negotiable, but standing taxis are always more expensive, so hail them on the street if you can. You can tell taxis from the other cars by their red license plates. Buses are another option; they're usually crowded and you'll have trouble if there's a language barrier, but they're safe, reliable, and cheap. The circular train is inexpensive as well, but it doesn't stop near many tourist destinations, so it may not be your first choice. However you get around Yangon, be sure to wear light clothing and keep a leisurely pace so the heat won't get the better of you while you're out and about.

Yangon was our first stop in our 3week trip to Myanmar.
Watching Yangon come to life in the morning was absolutely captivating.
It wasn't just a big city; it was a cultural explosion.
This city was hot, noisy and busy with plenty of unfamiliar smells, and it completely amazed us!
Meaningful travel for us is getting out of your comfort zone and stepping into a strange place to learn something new, and in turn, learn something about ourselves. This city definitely offers that!
Food plays a big role in the street life. There is an active community in the morning with coffee and food stalls everywhere on the streets.
19th street lights up at night into THE eating and drinking gathering place. We had such great conversations with travelers and locals here, discussing our discoveries and the enormous change in this country.
The Schwedagon Pagoda is the most spiritual place in Yangon. Locals and monks from all over Myanmar come here to worship their Buddha and sometimes play tourist too. If you travel here on your own, it's worthwhile to get a guide to teach you the meaning and significance of this vast site.
When the light turns to dusk, it casts a magical scene. The Pagoda is in all its glory of glistening gold, for many cameras to observe, not to mention a perfect break from the heat to gaze at this enormous place.
Our favorite moment was the Circle Train around the city -- All we did was watch and listen.
We love wandering through markets and sometimes the market even spills onto the train tracks.
Myanmar tested us. To listen, observe and not pose judgment.
We looked past the big, noisy metropolis and found such a warm, inviting culture.
Sometimes those places that challenge us the most gives us the greatest reward.
Give it a try, it's surprisingly more welcoming than you may have initially thought.
We even came back for another few days to explore some more.
Places we enjoyed:
Yangon Chinatown
19th Street Chinatown Yangon
Schwedagon Pagoda
Sule Pagoda
Free Yangon Walking Tours
The Yangon Circle Train

Bagan in central Burma is one of the world’s greatest archeological sites, a sight to rival Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat but – for the time being at least – without the visitors. The setting is sublime – a verdant 26 square-mile plain, part-covered in stands of palm and tamarind caught in a bend of the lazy-flowing Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) river and framed by the hazy silver-grey of distant mountains. Rising from the plain’s canopy of green are temples, dozens of them, hundreds of them, beautiful, other-worldly silhouettes that were built by the kings of Bagan between 1057 and 1287, when their kingdom was swept away by earthquakes and Kublai Khan and his invading Mongols. Some 2,230 of an original 4,450 temples survive, a legacy of the Buddhist belief that to build a temple was to earn merit. Most are superbly preserved or have been restored by UNESCO, among others, and many contain frescoes and carvings and statues of Buddha, big and small. Only a handful are regularly visited, and though tourist numbers are increasing and the hawkers are beginning to appear, this is still, by the standards of sites of a similar beauty and stature, a gloriously unsullied destination. This palace is one of the most awe-inspiring locations in all of Myanmar. It is one of the most magnificent palaces in world yet also retains a sense of mystery and intrigue. It was only reopened to public in 2008. The restoration and reconstruction of the Bagan Golden Palace was done in way to maintain the buildings heritage and architecture. Bagan Golden Palace of Myanmar's first ancient empire King Anawratha is among the four ancient palaces rebuilt after 1988, based on its original architectural style and is claimed as the most glorious one. The other three are Kambawzathadi Palace in Bago, Shwebon Yadana Mingalar Palace in Shwebo and Mya Nann San Kyaw Palace in Mandalay. King Anawrahta reunified Myanmar in 1044, establishing the Bagan empire historically and starting to extensively build Buddhist pagodas and temples to promote and propagate Theravada Buddhism (Little Vehicle). In a bid to preserve cultural heritage for posterity and attract tourists, the Myanmar Ministry of Culture started the reconstruction of the Thiri Zeya Bumi Bagan golden palace a few years ago. In conjunction with the palace project in the Bagan archaeological region, tourism infrastructures such as a 13-story Nan Myint viewing tower of 60 meters high and 16 meters wide and attached with a hotel, was also rebuilt and opened in April 2005 Uncover the traditions, arts, and culture that have been passed from generation to generation for over 1,0000 years. Unmatched production techniques with Myanmar's best dancers, musicians and actors come together to tell their story of this land's proud history. The show is produced by world class producer with experience running stage shows around the world.
The great Show will Starts Nov 2014, 7 PM Daily.
