Every year, the entire Malayalam month of Vrischikam and part of Dhanu that make up the 41 days of Mandalam season, Ayyappan Vilakku pujas are organised, especially at Ayyappa temples, For the Ayyappan Vilakku, a prototype of the Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala is made with materials such as banana stumps, bamboo, and coconut fronds. The main part of the temple is made with banana stumps, bamboo is used to link the stumps, On the right side of the temple, Malikapuram is installed, on the left side it is Vavar Swamy, and in one corner, the kannimoola, a Ganapathy temple is built, Songs are sung on the legendary fight between Lord Ayyappa and Vavar. In tune with the various rhymes and rhythms of this devotional song, two dancers in the costume and make up of Ayyappan and Vavar, perform fight, striking with swords and defending with coconut fronds. Vigorous footwork characterise their movements. In the last stage, a huge fire called 'azhi' is lit and the dancers step on the burning embers, still continuing to dance. The Ayyappan Vilakku is conducted the whole night with various rituals and pujas in a specially constructed and decorated 'mandapam.' Special pujas Special pujas are conducted for Lord Ayyappa. The pujas are conducted in traditional style, without compromising on any aspect, Mr. Shoranur says. Traditional Ayyappan Pattu ('keertanams') is an integral part of the Vilakku.
