Driving Through Addis Ababa
Driving around Addis with a GoPro. You don't see that much traffic because it was shot on a Sunday. Most people don't work on this day, could be for religious reasons or simply to spend time with family. As you can see Addis has grown exponentially, it takes forever to get to places. If you recognize some of the areas or places, let me know. I will edit it in. Great, enjoy the video.

But now, a newly opened urban metro service is set to transform the way people in Ethiopia's capital get to work." CNN

Addis Ababa:
Addis Ababa sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. Founded in 1886, it is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. This number has been increased from the originally published 2,738,248 figure and appears to be still largely underestimated. As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as "the political capital of Africa" due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent.
The city is populated by people from different regions of Ethiopia – the country has as many as 80 nationalities speaking 80 languages and belonging to a wide variety of religious communities. It is home to Addis Ababa University. The Federation of African Societies of Chemistry (FASC) and Horn of Africa Press Institute (HAPI) are also headquartered in Addis Ababa.
Overview:Addis Ababa lies at an altitude of 7,546 feet (2,300 metres) and is a grassland biome, located at 9°1′48″N 38°44′24″ECoordinates: 9°1′48″N 38°44′24″E. The city lies at the foot of Mount Entoto and forms part of the watershed for the Awash. From its lowest point, around Bole International Airport, at 2,326 metres (7,631 ft) above sea level in the southern periphery, the city rises to over 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) in the Entoto Mountains to the north.
Based on the 2007 census conducted by the Ethiopian national statistics authorities the population of Addis Ababa is 3,384,569 million; all of the population are urban inhabitants. For the capital city 662,728 households were counted living in 628,984 housing units, which results in an average of 5.3 persons to a household. Although all Ethiopian ethnic groups are represented in Addis Ababa due to its position as capital of the country, the largest groups include the Amhara (47.04%), Oromo (19.51%), Gurage (16.34%), Tigray (6.18%), Silt'e (2.94%), and Gamo (1.68%). Languages spoken include Amharic (71.0%), Oromiffa (10.7%), Gurage (8.37%), Tigrinya (3.60%), Silt'e (1.82%) and Gamo (1.03%). The religion with the most believers in Addis Ababa is Ethiopian Orthodox with 74.7% of the population, while 16.2% are Muslim, 7.77% Protestant, and 0.48% Catholic.
In the previous census, conducted in 1994, the city's population was reported to be 2,112,737, of whom 1,023,452 were men and 1,089,285 were women. At that time not all of the population were urban inhabitants; only 2,084,588 or 98.7% were. For the entire administrative council there were 404,783 households in 376,568 housing units with an average of 5.2 persons per household. The major ethnic groups included the Amhara (48.3%), Oromo (19.2%), Gurage (13.5%; 2.3% Sebat Bet, and 0.8% Sodo), Tigray 7.64%, Silt'e 3.98%, and foreigners from Eritrea 1.33%. Languages spoken included Amharic (72.6%), Oromiffa (10.0%), Gurage (6.54%), Tigrinya (5.41%), and Silt'e 2.29%. In 1994 the predominant religion was also Ethiopian Orthodox with 82.0% of the population, while 12.7% were Muslim, 3.87% Protestant, and 0.78% Catholic.
According to the 2007 national census, 98.64% of the housing units of Addis Ababa had access to safe drinking water, while 14.9% had flush toilets, 70.7% pit toilets (both ventilated and unventilated), and 14.3% had no toilet facilities. Values for other reported common indicators of the standard of living for Addis Ababa as of 2005 include the following: 0.1% of the inhabitants fall into the lowest wealth quintile; adult literacy for men is 93.6% and for women 79.95%, the highest in the nation for both sexes; and the civic infant mortality rate is 45 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, which is less than the nationwide average of 77; at least half of these deaths occurred in the infants’ first month of life.Wikipedia

Travel video about destination Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monasteries. Dega Stefanos is located in the centre of the lake and contains one of the country’s most important monasteries. On the summit, framed by walls and hidden under great trees, is the Holy Stefanos Monastery and within a small sanctuary various mummies are preserved within glazed wooden coffins and the remains of five emperors of various dynasties lie at rest. Awash is a settlement on the edge of the nature park of the same name, inhabited by the Afar, a proud and independent tribe. On market day, people from the surrounding area meet here. For the Afar, life is hard and only the strong survive. Corn, tobacco, dates and cotton are the main trading products of this region. Dromedaries, sheep and goats are bred, and pastureland is often the subject of heated disputes. A journey through Ethiopia is also a journey through time itself. A land of rich traditions, religions and myths. A country of legends and contrast that possesses one of the most colourful histories on the African continent.

Hundreds of choir members gather in the streets of Addis Ababa, singing and dancing. They are here to celebrate to the annual Meskel festival, held every year in September.
Meskel, which means cross in the ancient language Ge'ez, commemorates the ancient discovery of a cross -- believed to be the one which Jesus was crucified.
In Ethiopia, it's believed a part of the cross was brought from Jerusalem to Ethiopia via Egypt, giving the event a special significance in the country.
This year, tourists from across the world thronged to the festival to join in the festivities.
With its rich and ancient Orthodox Christian tradition, Kibrom Tesfay, a tourist guide believes festivals like Meskel should be promoted as one of Ethiopia's main tourist attractions.
One of Africa's fastest growing economies, the Ethiopian government is planning to develop the tourism industry as part of its growth agenda.
"The importance of the Meskel Festival is not only for Ethiopian Christians. For example, I have eighteen tourists and they use many services starting from the Ethiopian Airlines, Hotels, Car Rentals, Tourist Guides and the destinations. So, the economical benefit are for all Ethiopians. It also give the country a good image. So, I think we need to do more in order to promote and earn more income from Meskel," said Tesfay.
Legend has it that the 'true cross' on which Jesus was killed was found by Queen Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I, in the fourth century.
"In order to find the cross that had been buried for a long time, Constantine's mother, Queen Helena travelled from Rome to Jerusalem and made a bonfire. The smoke from the bonfire lit up the sky showing where the cross was hidden. So the Queen started digging at that place and this what we commemorate in September," explained Memihir Menkir Haile, a religious teacher in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
The Meskel celebration includes a bonfire known as Demera, which acts as a symbol of the vision that showed Queen Helena the location of the cross.
The fire, built several stories high is lit by priests carrying effigies of Christ and crosses on sticks. Its flames send sparks high into the night sky as the crowd sing and dance to the sound of traditional drums below.
Emebet Hadgu came to Addis Ababa for the festival after living abroad for eight years. She says the festival holds a special place for many Orthodox Christians.
"I grew up in church singing in the choir therefore I have a deep love for this ceremony and I
came from abroad at this time mainly to attend this event and I can't tell you how happy I feel. The ceremony is just amazing, said Hadgu.
Apart from its symbolism, Orthodox Ethiopians believe Meskel is a time of great sacrifice and the celebration of the cross brings enlightenment and hope.

A trip to London might as well be a trip through history. This city has long been a hub for finance, education, and culture, and is full of modern construction mixed with ancient buildings.
Your London tour must include St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of its most well-known churches. You’ll also want to see the Tower of London, the Palace of Westminster, and Westminster Abbey for exquisite examples of the city’s famous architectural landmarks. Walk or jog through numerous green spaces, among them Hyde Park and Green Park, in the center of London.
Continue your London sightseeing in the West End, where you’ll find ancient buildings converted into modern shops, restaurants, bars, and shows. You’ll find one of the largest theatre districts in the world here, and can take in a different play almost every night of the week.
For a real treat, climb aboard the London Eye, a giant, rotating Ferris wheel, and see the old and new parts of the city all at once.

The destabilisation of Iraq in the past decade has contributed to the state of anarchy in the Middle East, the rise of extremism and the mushrooming of terrorism. To achieve stability, Iraq must be supported to achieve meaningful reforms and strong central government. Corruption, quota system and foreign intervention are among the illnesses of the country. What are the prospects of Iraq’s transformation into a sovereign, democratic and stable power? These challenges will be debated at this seminar.

Debre Libanos:
Debre Libanos (ደብረ፡ሊባኖስ, Däbrä Libanos) is a monastery in Ethiopia, lying northwest of Addis Ababa in the Semien Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region. Founded in the thirteenth century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, according to the belief, he meditated in a cave for 29 years. The monastery's chief abbot, called the Ichege, was the second most powerful official in the Ethiopian Church after the Abuna. The monastery complex sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of one of the tributaries of the Abbay River. None of the original buildings of Debre Libanos survive, although David Buxton suspected "there are interesting things still to be found among the neighbouring cliffs." Current buildings include the church over Tekle Haymanot's tomb, which Emperor Haile Selassie ordered constructed in 1961; a slightly older Church of the Cross, where Buxton was told a fragment of the True Cross is preserved; and five religious schools. The cave where the saint lived is in the nearby cliffs, which one travel guide describes as a five-minute walk away. This cave contains a spring, whose water is considered holy and is the object of pilgrimages.
According to David Buxton, the original route to Debre Libanos was through a cleft in the cliffs that line the eastern side of the Abay. In the later 20th century a road was laid from the main Addis Ababa – Debre Marqos highway to the monastery; it is a little more than four kilometers long.
