The Tate is an institution that houses the United Kingdom's national collection of British Art, and International Modern and Contemporary Art. It is a network of four art museums: Tate Britain, London (previously known as the Tate Gallery, founded 1897), Tate Liverpool (founded 1988), Tate St Ives, Cornwall (founded 1993) and Tate Modern, London (founded 2000), with a complementary website, Tate Online (created 1998). There are plans to open a TATE in Southampton in 2020. It is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
Tate is used as the operating name for the corporate body which was established by the Museums and Galleries Act 1992 as The Board of Trustees of the Tate Gallery.
The gallery was founded in 1897, as the National Gallery of British Art. When its role was changed to include the national collection of Modern Art as well as the national collection of British art, in 1932, it was renamed the Tate Gallery after sugar magnate Henry Tate of Tate & Lyle, who had laid the foundations for the collection. The Tate Gallery was housed in the current building occupied by Tate Britain which is situated in Millbank, London. In 2000, the Tate Gallery transformed itself into the current-day Tate, or the Tate Modern, which consists of a federation of four museums: Tate Britain which displays the collection of British art from 1500 to the present day; Tate Modern which is also in London, houses the Tate's collection of British and International Modern and Contemporary Art from 1900 to the present day. Tate Liverpool, in Liverpool has the same purpose as Tate Modern but on a smaller scale, and Tate St Ives displays Modern and Contemporary Art by artists who have connections with the area. All four museums share the Tate Collection. One of the Tate's most publicised art events is the awarding of the annual Turner Prize, which takes place at Tate Britain.

Tate Britain is an art gallery situated on Millbank in London, and part of the Tate gallery network in Britain, with Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. It is the oldest gallery in the network, opening in 1897. It houses a substantial collection of the works of J. M. W. Turner.
It is housed in the Tate's original premises on Millbank on the site of Millbank Prison. The front part of the building was designed by Sidney R. J. Smith with a classical portico and dome behind. Construction, undertaken by Higgs and Hill, commenced in 1893. The gallery opened on 21 July 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art, but became commonly known as the Tate Gallery, after its founder Sir Henry Tate. There have been several extensions over the years. The central sculpture gallery was designed by John Russell Pope.
Crises during its existence include flood damage to work from the River Thames and bomb damage during World War II, though most of the collection was in safe storage elsewhere, and a large Stanley Spencer painting, deemed too big to move, had a protective brick wall built in front of it.

Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Alban(s),KC (22 January 1561 – 9 April 1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist and author. He served both as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. Although his political career ended in disgrace, he remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution.
Bacon has been called the creator of empiricism. His works established and popularised inductive methodologies for scientific inquiry, often called the Baconian method, or simply the scientific method. His demand for a planned procedure of investigating all things natural marked a new turn in the rhetorical and theoretical framework for science, much of which still surrounds conceptions of proper methodology today.
Bacon was knighted in 1603, and created both the Baron Verulam in 1618, and the Viscount St Alban in 1621; as he died without heirs both peerages became extinct upon his death. He famously died by contracting pneumonia while studying the effects of freezing on the preservation of meat.

The Tate Britain opens the Tate Sensorium, an immersive display, combining hearing, smell, feel and taste with the traditional sense of sight to enhance the experience of four paintings from the Tate collection. Creative studio Flying Object produced the experience with the help from a master chocolatier, a scent expert, and the Sussex Computer Human Interaction Lab team lead by Dr Marianna Obrist at the University of Sussex.

A visit to London isn't complete without a trip to Tate Modern.
The collection at Tate Modern includes all the major modern art movements from Fauvism onwards. It features Picasso and Matisse, Dali, Ernst and Mirò. There are works by Pollock, Naum Gabo and Giacometti and the Seagram Murals of Rothko are displayed in the famous Tate Rothko Room. Pop art has its place, including works of Lichtenstein and Warhol, as does Minimal art and Conceptual art.
Britain's national museum of modern and contemporary art from around the world is housed in the former Bankside Power Station on the banks of the Thames. The awe-inspiring Turbine Hall runs the length of the entire building and you can see amazing work for free by artists such as Cézanne, Bonnard, Matisse, Picasso, Rothko, Dalí, Pollock, Warhol and Bourgeois. Tate Modern London is the national gallery of international modern art for Britain. Based in a spectacular disused power station in the heart of London, Tate Modern was created in 2000 and has since become world renowned as a centre for modern art from around the world.

The Sutton Hoo Burial exhibit is still very ornate and it is a wonderful piece to check out. The helmet has several hidden images on it like in one of those children's books. There are over five thousand unique pieces that are displayed that can make the viewer truly grasp what life was like in the middle of the 18th century all the way up to the beginning of the 19th century. The British Museum was founded by an Act of Parliament and the piece of paper that the Act was transcribed on can be seen in George the III's library that was restored. It dates back all the way to the early 7th century. Make sure to find the best time that different collections are on display, because not all of them will be displayed every single day. You can find out more about exhibit schedules on the British Museum's website. The museum tries to mix it up a little because they have to many artifacts and not enough display space.

This Christmas Market used to be at Southbank but has moved this year to Tate Modern and brings a traditional German Christmas experience to Bankside from 22nd November until Christmas Eve, transforming the riverside stretch of the Thames outside the gallery into a festive attraction for the whole family.

In the heart of the city, on the South Bank of the Thames, between Hungerford Bridge and Westminster Bridge, this is one of the major landmarks which attract tourists.
It is also the tallest Ferris wheel in the whole of Europe and the most paid tourist site in the UK. This enormous wheel has 32 air-conditioned and sealed ovoidal passenger capsules making this whole magnificent experience a comfortable one. The capsules have been made out of glass and allow the passenger to have a great 360 degree view over the city.

Unsurprisingly, post-tour, my mind wandered to cinema. In 2002, I had occasion to watch an astonishing piece of cinema ... But at least, it has Sophie Marceau in it....
