Transcript - The world is becoming more and more an urban place. Today there’s 50 percent of the world’s population living in urban areas. In the next 30 years we’ll add two-and-a-half billion people to that. So by 2050 our expectation is that 70 percent of the world’s population will be living in urban areas. And I think the challenge for all of us is to use this urbanization as an opportunity to address some of the real challenges that the world faces. Economic challenges, social challenges, environmental challenges. Because they will exist in some ways they have the potential to expand if we don’t get ahead of them. And I think historically we have assumed that we can leave this, all these challenges to the government to solve these problems or the nonprofit community to solve the problems and the business doesn’t need to get involved. And I think that’s just no longer the case. I think business has to step up, has to play a much more active role not to replace the government, not to replace the nonprofit sector but to bring its talents and its expertise and its resources to be part of the solution.
I mean the reality now is government is able to do a lot less. They don’t have the resources. In many ways they don’t have the collaboration. And what’s interesting right now is you’re seeing in cities, in urban areas not just all these people we talked about but you’re actually seeing the kind of collaboration between the public and the private sector, the nonprofit community in a way that’s addressing these challenges that you don’t always see at the federal level. And I think the private sector has a genuine responsibility to step up and to use in whatever case they may have their unique set of capabilities and the resources and their expertise to try to address some of these challenges. We can’t thrive if the communities where we operate don’t thrive. If the communities are failing it’s not good for business. And I think that’s the mindset that more the private sector needs to get into that this is not something that can simply be a little sideshow or just contribute to some charities and that absolves you of any more responsibility. We all have a vested interest in the success of our communities and in the success of our cities and we’ve got to step up and make sure that we’re doing what we can to help them grow and to help them thrive and prosper.

As the world population rises exponentially toward 8 billion, much of it's people live densely packed into it's largest cities. From the home of the Pyramids to the New York of Asia we countdown the 11 largest cities in the world based on population.
11. Cairo, Egypt
With the Pyramids lying close by, this incredible city has a population of close to 18 million people and a land area of 1,658 square kilometers. Cairo is the capital of Egypt and it’s the largest city in the Middle East.
10. Osaka, Japan
There are over 19.8 million people in Osaka and the land area is of 11,170 square kilometers. Osaka is famous for the 16th-century shogunate Osaka Castle and the Shinto Sumiyoshi-taisha Shrine, which is among Japan’s oldest.
9. Beijing, China
With a population of over 18.3 million people, Beijing was founded over 3000 years ago, it boasts amazing ancient sites such as the grand Forbidden City complex, the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties and Tiananmen Square pedestrian plaza, the site of Mao Zedong’s mausoleum and the infamous human rights protest and massacre of 1989.
8. Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico is home to much more than tacos, tequila and Nacho Libre. Mexico City stands on the ruins of the ancient Aztec, Tenonchitilan and has 20.5 million inhabitants. People describe it as an amazing mix of contemporary city life and historic preservation. There world-class museums, new buildings and parks within the remains of several cultures. Once plagued by pollution, it is now cleaning up its act.
7. Sao Paolo, Brazil
While maybe not Brazils most well known city, it's certainly the largest and with 20 million people comes in at 7 amongst the largest cities in the world. It is known as one of the most powerful cities in South America in business, entertainment and the economy.
6. New York City, USA
The Big Apple is an icon for many reasons including, capitalism and liberty. Its most famous buildings and monuments include the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building and Central Park. New York has over 20 million citizens and a land area of 30,671 square miles.
5. Delhi, India
With 22 million people and a land area of only 1,590 square miles, Delhi is the capital of India. 4. Shanghai, China
The second from China in our countdown, this Shanghai is the main trading and finance area in the country with some of the busiest ports in the world. It's 23 million people squeeze into an area of 6,340 square miles and this density had led to problems with traffic and pollution.
3. Seoul, South Korea.
Seoul has 23.6 million and is the home of huge technology companies such as Samsung. South Korea is totally different to it's neighbour North Korea. Many Koreans hope some day to unify both nations but right now automated machine guns guard the border.
2. Jakarta, Indonesia
The rapidly growing capital of Indonesia is home to 28 million people. Home to Beef Rendang and the languages spoken are Bahasa Indonesia and English. Jakarta has the most museums of any city in South East Asia and has 13 rivers running through the city.
1. Tokyo, Japan
Coming in at the top of our countdown with 35.7 million people is the capital of Japan, Tokyo. It is a world commerce hub and that some consider the New York of Asia. Its population is so dense that many people live in apartments 15 square metres (170 square feet). Many hotels in Tokyo have tiny 'capsule rooms'. The subway is so busy that officials have to physically push commuters into trains, called train stuffing. Living in Tokyo is expensive and the city is also reknowned for it's cleanliness and as a fashion capital.

I reached 1 million people in Cities Skylines. Cities: Skylines is a city-building game currently in development by the Finnish game developer Colossal Order and to be published and released by Paradox Interactive on March 10, 2015 for Windows, OS X and Linux.
Check out the written guide here:
http://sergiuhelldragoon.com/strategy-games/cities-skylines/guides/get-1-million-population
Cities: Skylines focuses on city-building simulation through urban planning. Players control zoning, road placement, taxation, public services, and public transportation of an area. Gameplay is open-ended, touted as "endless sandbox gameplay across massive maps.” Player-determined civic policies can affect the development of the entire city or individual districts thereof.
Roads can be built straight or free-form and the grid used for zoning adapts to road shape; cities need not follow a grid plan. Roads of varying widths (up to major freeways) accommodate different traffic volumes, and variant road types (for example roads lined with trees) offer reduced noise pollution or increased property values in the surrounding area at an increased cost to the player.
Modding, via the addition of user-generated content such as buildings or vehicles, is to be supported in Skylines; the creation of an active content-generating community is an explicit design goal. This content will be available for download from the Steam Workshop.

wn.com/Cities Skylines 1 Million Population ( Limit ) | Super Massive City

Government announced the names of 98 urban centres and cities that have been nominated by the state governments for the "Smart City" scheme. Two dozen state capitals, another 24 economic and business hubs, 18 urban areas of cultural and tourism importance have found place in the list.
Announcing the nominations, urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu said it was a good signal that 65 small and medium towns and cities have made it to the list of smart city aspirants. Several big cities including state capitals such as Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram and Shimla have failed to make the cut. The identified 98 urban areas, which fall under municipal jurisdictions, will cover about 13 crore people accounting for over 35% of the country's total urban population.
The big metros that have made to the list include Ahmedabad, Greater Mumbai, Chennai and Greater Hyderabad. Number of urban local bodies such as New Delhi Municipal Council, Lucknow, Jaipur, Allahabad, Vishakhapatnam, Gandhinagar, Surat, Kochi, Bhopal and Navi Mumbai have also found place.
"Making them (cities) smart will make them engines of economic growth besides giving decent life to the citizens," Naidu said adding that Smart City and AMRUT (scheme to rejuvenate 500 towns) schemes are the "safest" for investors to put in their money.

Mumbai: Traffic - Cities on Speed - congestion, over-population, and bureaucracy. India.

Mumbai , also known as Bombay, is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the fourth most populous city in the world, with a total metropolitan area population of approximately 20.5 million. Along with the neighbouring urban areas, including the cities of Navi Mumbai and Thane, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an Alpha world city. It is also the wealthiest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West or Central Asia.
The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai were home to communities of fishing colonies. For centuries, the islands were under the control of successive indigenous empires before being ceded to the Portuguese and subsequently to the British East India Company. During the mid-18th century, Mumbai was reshaped by the Hornby Vellard project, which undertook the reclamation of the area between the seven constituent islands from the sea. Completed by 1845, the project along with construction of major roads and railways transformed Bombay into a major seaport on the Arabian Sea. Economic and educational development characterised the city during the 19th century. It became a strong base for the Indian independence movement during the early 20th century. When India became independent in 1947, the city was incorporated into Bombay State. In 1960, following the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a new state of Maharashtra was created with Bombay as capital. The city was renamed Mumbai in 1996, the name being derived from the Koli goddess—Mumbadevi.
Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment capital of India, it is also one of the world's top 10 centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow, generating 5% of India's GDP, and accounting for 25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India (Mumbai Port Trust & JNPT), and 70% of capital transactions to India's economy. The city houses important financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, the National Stock Exchange of India, the SEBI and the corporate headquarters of numerous Indian companies and multinational corporations. It is also home to some of India's premier scientific and nuclear institutes like BARC, NPCL, IREL, TIFR, AERB, AECI, and the Department of Atomic Energy. The city also houses India's Hindi (Bollywood) and Marathi film and television industry. Mumbai's business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a higher standard of living, attract migrants from all over India and, in turn, make the city a melting pot of many communities and cultures.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Much of the world's population will soon live in mega-cities. These are often seen as a problem, when in fact they hold the key to a sustainable future, if their resources are adequately managed and their energy harnessed for the common good.
Aromar Revi is Director of the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) India’s prospective independent national University for Research & Innovation addressing its challenges of urbanisation. He is a member of the Leadership Council of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), co-chair of its Urban thematic group, where he leads a global campaign for an urban Sustainable Development Goal; and a Fellow of the India China Institute at the New School University. Aromar is a global expert on Sustainable Urban development, and has helped mobilise a successful international campaign for an urban Sustainable Development Goal as part of the UN’s post-2015 development agenda, which brought major global urban institutions (UN Habitat, UCLG, C-40, ICLEI, Metropolis, WUC, SDI and WEIGO) and over 200 cities and organisations together. He is one of South Asia’s leading experts on global environmental change & Climate adaptation and mitigation; a Coordinating Lead Author of the IPCC Assessment Report 5 on Urban Areas and co-PI of a 5-year international multi-million dollar Climate Adaptation research programme that spans India and Africa. He is one of South Asia’s most experienced risk and disaster management professionals having led teams to plan & execute rehabilitation programmes for 10 major earthquake, cyclone and flood events affecting over 5 million people and is on the Advisory Board of UNISDR (the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction)'s Scientific & Technical Advisory Group & its biennial Global Assessment of Risk.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Metros and MRTS (Mass Rapid Transport System) are emerging as a major area for infrastructure development in major cities with high population (around 8 Million). The Metro Rail Project, once completed will transform Hyderabad as the preferred city in India; with integrated urban transport planning using inter modal connectivity and convenient sky-walks, which will mark the beginning of an era of seamless commuting in India.
The Hyderabad Metro Rail Network will cover a total distance of around 72 Km across three corridors:
Corridor I : Miyapur to LB Nagar
Corridor II : JBS to Falaknuma
Corridor III : Nagole to Shilparamam
The Project will be integrated with existing railway stations, suburban railway network (MMTS) and bus stations to ensure seamless and comfortable travel.
Project Highlights
• An elevated Metro Rail, with 2 tracks (up and down lines) on a deck erected on pillars in the central median of the road, without obstructing the road traffic.
• Adequate parking space and circulating areas to be provided for multi modal commute
• The proposed rail will have a maximum speed of 80 kmph, the average speed of the trains will be around 34 kmph- an international standard for MRT systems.
• The travel time by Metro Rail from one end to another will be as such:
• 45 minutes for Corridor 1 (Miyapur-L.B. Nagar- 28.87 KM) as against 1 hr 44 minutes by road.
• 22 minutes for Corridor 2 (Jubilee Bus Station- Falaknuma-14.78 Km) as against 1 hr 10 minutes by road
• 39 minutes for Corridor 3 (Nagole-Shilparamam-27.51 KM) as against 1 hr 26 minutes by road.
• Rails will of course be continuously welded in order to lessen the noise levels.
• Different categories of aesthetic stations are being designed to reflect the local architecture. As far as possible, parking and circulation areas will be developed on nearby government lands.
• Coaches will be air-conditioned with automatic door closures and many other safety features.
• Eco-friendly travel mode that will reduce air as well as noise pollution in the city terminals. Also station based junctions will be conducted with bus transport (bus rapid transit system) routes & smart card-based automatic ticketing systems.overall economy in the region.

The urban area of Porto, which extends beyond the administrative limits of the city, has a population of 1.4 million (2011) in an area of 389 km2 (150 sq mi), making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal. Porto Metropolitan Area, on the other hand, includes an estimated 1.8 million people. It is recognized as a Gamma-level global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group, the only Portuguese city besides Lisbon with such recognition.
Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to as the origin of the name "Portugal", based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin. In Portuguese the name of the city is spelled with a definite article ("o Porto"; English: the port). Consequently, its English name evolved from a misinterpretation of the oral pronunciation and referred to as Oporto in modern literature and by many speakers.
One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.In 2014, Porto was elected The Best European Destination by the Best European Destinations Agency.

Tokyo
Tokyo, Japan is the original mega-city, a throbbing, dynamic metropolis of 32.5 million people, well over 50 percent more massive than the world's next largest metropolitan areas. With populations clustering around 20 million people, the metro regions of Seoul, Mexico City, New York and Mumbai are all less than two-thirds the magnitude of the Tokyo metro area.
Tokyo's ranking as the world's number one city goes well beyond the sheer scale of its population. Its lively Shibuya district is home to the world's busiest intersection, a vibrant pedestrian scramble which people traverse from every direction at the same time. Tokyo's famously bustling Tsukiji Market plays fishmonger to the world as the largest wholesale fish and seafood market on the planet.
Yet, despite its immense proportions, many worldly, well-traveled observers marvel at how well Tokyo functions. Tokyo's subway trains, packed to the gills during peak rush hour travel times, are known for arriving and departing with impressive precision. Moreover, the city manages to keep a comfortable handle on pollution, crime and other challenges that often accompany such immense urban environments.Tokyo officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都 Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, and the largest metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府 Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市 Tōkyō-shi).
The Tokyo Metropolitan government administers the 23 special wards of Tokyo (each governed as a city), which cover the area that was the city of Tokyo, as well as 39 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture and the two outlying island chains. The population of the special wards is over 8 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 13 million. The prefecture is part of the world's most populous metropolitan area with upwards of 35 million people and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity in 2008, ahead of New York City metropolitan area, which ranks second on the list. The city hosts 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city.
Tokyo has been described as one of the three "command centers" for the world economy, along with New York City and London. The city is considered an alpha+ world city, listed by the GaWC's 2008 inventory[ and ranked fourth among global cities by A.T. Kearney's 2012 Global Cities Index. In 2012, Tokyo was named the most expensive city for expatriates, according to the Mercer and Economist Intelligence Unit cost-of-living surveys, and in 2009 named the third Most Liveable City and the World's Most Livable Megalopolis by the magazine Monocle. The Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo by far the most Michelin stars of any city in the world. Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics and is currently a candidate city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
