Before his ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, his personal name (imina) is not clearly known, but he was known as Oshi-hiraki Toyosakura-hiko-no-mikoto.
Shōmu had four Empresses and six Imperial sons and daughters.
Shōmu was still a child at the time of his father's death; thus, Empresses Gemmei and Gensho occupied the throne before he acceded.
Shōmu continued to reside in the Hezei Palace.
Shōmu is known as the first emperor whose consort was not born into the imperial household. His consort Kōmyō was a non-royal Fujiwara commoner. A ritsuryo office was created for the queen-consort, the Kogogushiki; and this bureaucratic innovation continued into the Heian period.
Shōmu, a devout Buddhist, is best remembered for commissioning, in 743, the sixteen-meter high statue of the Vairocana Buddha (the Daibutsu) in Tōdai-ji of Nara. At the time, this was such a massive undertaking that later chroniclers accuse him of having completely exhausted the country's reserves of bronze and precious metals. In 752, the Shōmu held the Eye-opening Ceremony of the Great Buddha.
During the Nara Period Emperor Shomu went hunting on Mt. Kasagi. He chased a deer and found himself in a dangerous situation, which he eventually escaped by ...

Nara's premier attraction is Todaiji Temple and its Daibutsu (Great Buddha). When Emperor Shomu ordered construction of both the temple and Diabutsu back in the mid-700s, he intended to make Todaiji the headquarters of all Buddhist temples in the land. As part of his lanes for a Buddhist utopia, he commissioned work for this huge bronze statue of Buddha; it took eight casting to compete this remarkable work of art, which remains the largest bronze statue of Buddha in Japan. At a height of more than feet, the Daibutsu is made 427 tons of bronze. However, thanks t o Japan's frequent natural calamities, the Buddha of today isn't quite what it used to be.
The wooden structure housing the Great Buddha, called Daibutsuden, was destroyed several times through the centuries; the present structure dates from 1709. It's the largest wooden structure in the world but is only two-thirds its original size.
Behind the statue, is a huge wooden column with a small hole as the same size as Buddha's nostrils. in it near the ground. According to popular belief, if you can manage to crawl through this opening, you'll be sure to reach enlightenment.

東大寺盧舎那仏像(とうだいじるしゃなぶつぞう)は、東大寺大仏殿(金堂)の本尊である仏像(大仏)。一般に奈良の大仏(ならのだいぶつ)として知られる。

Get on the train and discover some of Japan's most charming cities. We are visiting the former imperial capital Kyoto and Nara, famous for the world's largest wooden statue of the Buddha - both located in the Kansai region about 400 kilometers in the west of Tokyo.
0:00
The Nozomi service on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen is the fastest way to get from Tokyo to Kyoto in just two hours. Although we already boarded a cheaper night bus service the evening before :). Our day is rainy and even a little bit foggy - it creates an interesting atmosphere while we get to see the most important historical sites.
Kyoto has a population close to 1.5 million and contains roughly 2,000 temples and shrines. One of them beeing the Kinkaku-ji "the Temple of the Golden Pavillion" is a Zen Buddhist temple founded during the Muromachi period in 1397. Worth a look is also the Ryōan-ji Zen temple which is famous for its distinctive rock formations. The entire composition can never be seen at once from the veranda. After a short walk through the streets of Gion and Higashiyama we reach the Ho-kanji Temple and the Yasaka pagoda.
We are going on with the nearby Kiyomizu-dera temple founded in 778, which features a large veranda, that juts out over the hillside and offers impressive views of the city.
It was a really enjoyable day and we had a lot of fun - even if the wheater prevented us to see a little bit more of Kyoto than just the main tourist attractions. We stayed one night at the excellent Utano Youth Hostel in the north of Kyoto.
4:32
The next day it still doesn't want to stop raining. Today's program is a day trip to Nara, about 35 kilometers south of Kyoto. The Nara line of JR West competes with the private Kintetsu Kyoto and Nara Lines. Because of the missed JR connection (only about every 30 minutes on sundays) and the fact that Kintetsu's Nara station is much better located in the city center we decide for the Kintetsu railway. We take an express service bound for Tenri to Yamato-Saidaiji, a major hub of three Kintetsu lines which offers services in all directions: Kyoto, Osaka Namba, Kashihara and - of course - to Nara.
Nara has about 370.000 inhabitants and was the capital of Japan during the Nara period from 710 to 784 known as "Heijō-kyō". Most of the temples and shrines were founded during this period. A popular "feature" of Nara are the roaming deers around the Nara Park. They are well-behaved, respectful and even mind traffic lights. But watch out if you have something to eat - you might get encircled by them in an instant ;)
We are also visiting the famous Todai-ji Temple and Nigatsu-dō. Its Daibutsuden Hall is the the world's largest wooden building and it also houses the largest wooden statue of the Buddha Vairocana (Daibutsu). It was established in the early 8th century by Emperor Shōmu.
On the way back to the station we pass the Kōfuku-ji Temple and get directly into something that looks like a traditional street festival - and even the sun is comming out.
At the end of this exciting weekend we are heading back to Kyoto station and take a Nozomi Shinkansen service to Shin-Yokohama to get home. Special thanks to Youhei, without him we wouldn't never have experienced that much impressions of Japan's history and so much fun getting around Kyoto and Nara.
______________
This will be probably the last video of Japan for a while. I need to go there again. ^_^
I hope that everyone will have a happy and succesfull year 2015! :)

This temple, believed to have been built in 744 by Gyoki Bosatsu under decree from Emperor Shomu, is dedicated to the Medicine Bhudda, Yakushi Nyorai. This era, the Nara Period, was the most magnificent in ancient Japanese history. 1. Haeinsa Temple
Haeinsa (Temple of Reflection on a Smooth Sea) is one of the most important Buddhist temples in South Korea. The temple was first built in 802 and rebuilt in the 19th century after Haiensa was burned down in a fire in 1817. The temple’s greatest treasure however, a complete copy of the Buddhist scriptures (he Tripitaka Koreana) written on 81,258 woodblocks, survived the fire.
2. Wat Arun
Situated on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River , Wat Arun (“Temple of Dawn”) is one of the oldest and best known landmarks in Bangkok, Thailand. The temple is an architectural representation of Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology. Despite it’s name, the best views of Wat Arun are in the evening with the sun setting behind it.
3. Pha That Luang
Located in Vientiane, Pha That Luang (“Great Stupa in Lao”) is one of the most important monument in Laos. The stupa has several terraces with each level representing a different stage of Buddhist enlightenment. The lowest level represents the material world; the highest level represents the world of nothingness. Pha That Luang was built in the 16th century on the ruins of an earlier Khmer temple. The temple was destroyed by a Siamese invasion in 1828, then later reconstructed by the French in 1931.
4. Jokhang
The Jokhang Temple in Lhasa is the most important sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism attracting thousands of pilgrims each year. The temple was constructed by King Songtsän Gampo in the 7th century. The Mongols sacked the Jokhang temple several times but the building survived. Today the temple complex covers an area of about 25,000 square meters.
5. Todaiji Temple
Todaiji (“Great Eastern Temple”) in Nara is one of the most historically significant and famous Buddhist temples in Japan. The temple was built in the 8th century by Emperor Shomu as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan. Today little remains of the original buildings of Todaiji. The Daibutsuden (“Great Buddha Hall”), dates for the most part from 1709. It houses one of the largest Budha statues in Japan and is the worlds largest wooden building, even though it is only two-thirds the size of the original structure.
6. Boudhanath
Located in a suburb of Kathmandu, Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world. It is the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal and many refugees from Tibet have settled here in the last few decades. It is probably best known for the Buddha eyes that are featured on all four sides of the tower. The present stupa is said to date from the 14th century, after the previous one was destroyed by Mughal invaders.
7. Mahabodhi Temple
The Mahabodhi (Great Enlightenment) Temple is a Buddhist stupa located in Bodh Gaya, India. The main complex contains a descendant of the original Bodhi Tree under which Gautama Buddha gained enlightenment and is the most sacred place in Buddhism. About 250 years after the Buddha attained Enlightenment, Emperor Asoka built a temple at the spot. The present temple dates from the 5th-6th century.
8. Shwedagon Pagoda
The Shwedagon Pagoda (or Golden Pagoda) in Yangon, is the holiest Buddhist shrine in Burma. The origins of Shwedagon are lost in antiquity but it is estimated that the Pagoda was first built by the Mon during the Bagan period, sometime between the 6th and 10th century AD. The temple complex is full of glittering, colorful stupas but the center of attention is the 99 meter high (326 feet) high main stupa that is completely covered in gold.
9. Bagan
Bagan, also spelled Pagan, on the banks of the Ayerwaddy River, is home to the largest area of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world. It was the capital of several ancient kings of Burma who built perhaps as many as 4,400 temples during the height of the kingdom (between 1000 and 1200 AD). In 1287, the kingdom fell to the Mongols, after refusing to pay tribute to Kublai Khan and Bagan quickly declined as a political center, but continued to flourish as a place of Buddhist scholarship.
10. Borobudur
Located on the Indonesian island of Java, 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Yogyakarta, the Borobudur is the largest and most famous Buddhist temple in the world. The Borobudur was built over a period of some 75 years in the 8th and 9th centuries by the kingdom of Sailendra, out of an estimated 2 million blocks of stone. It was abandoned in the 14th century for reasons that still remain a mystery and for centuries lay hidden in the jungle under layers of volcanic ash.

Todai-ji is a Buddhist temple complex, that was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, located in the city of Nara, Japan. Its Great Buddha Hall houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha. In 743, Emperor Shomu issued a law in which he stated that the people should become directly involved with the establishment of new Buddha temples throughout Japan. His personal belief was that such piety would inspire Buddha to protect his country from further disaster. Gyoki, with his pupils, traveled the provinces asking for donations. According to records kept by Tōdai-ji, more than 2,600,000 people in total helped construct the Great Buddha and its Hall. The 16 m (52 ft) high statue was built through eight castings over three years, the head and neck being cast together as a separate element. After enduring multiple fires and earthquakes, the construction was eventually resumed in Nara in 745 and the Buddha was finally completed in 751.
