Nanotechnology (sometimes shortened to "nanotech") is the study of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally, nanotechnology deals with developing materials, devices, or other structures with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometres. Quantum mechanical effects are important at this quantum-realm scale. Nanotechnology is considered a key technology for the future. Consequently, various governments have invested billions of dollars in its future. The USA has invested 3.7 billion dollars through its National Nanotechnology Initiative followed by Japan with 750 million and the European Union 1.2 billion.
Michio Kaku(加来 道雄,Kaku Michio?, born January 24, 1947) is an American theoretical physicist, the Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics in the City College of New York of City University of New York, a co-founder of string field theory, a futurist, and a "communicator" and "popularizer" of science. He has written several books about physics and related topics; he has made frequent appearances on radio, television, and film; and he writes extensive online blogs and articles. He has written two New York Times best sellers, Physics of the Impossible (2008) and Physics of the Future (2011). He has hosted several TV specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery Channel, and the Science Channel.
Ray Kurzweil grew up in the New York City borough of Queens. He was born to secular Jewish parents who had escaped Austria just before the onset of World War II, and he was exposed via Unitarian Universalism to a diversity of religious faiths during his upbringing. His father was a musician and composer and his mother was a visual artist. His uncle, an engineer at Bell Labs, taught young Ray the basics of computer science. In his youth, he was an avid reader of science fiction literature. In 1963, at age fifteen, he wrote his first computer program. Later in high school he created a pattern-recognition software program that analyzed the works of classical composers, and then synthesized its own songs in similar styles. In 1965, he was invited to appear on the CBS television program I've Got a Secret, where he performed a piano piece that was composed by a computer he also had built. Later that year, he won first prize in the International Science Fair for the invention; he was also recognized by the Westinghouse Talent Search and was personally congratulated by President Lyndon B. Johnson during a White House ceremony.

Graphene is a nanomaterial that comes from the oldest and cheapest material, called graphite. Graphene is a none atom thick layer of carbon. To put it in perspective, graphite is made of billions of layers of carbon, if you take one layer of that graphite, you have graphene. Graphene is very flexible, light and transparent; and it is 300 times stronger than steel, which makes graphene the strongest material

The earliest, widespread description of nanotechnology[1][2] referred to the particular technological goal of precisely manipulating atoms and molecules for fabrication of macroscale products, also now referred to as molecular nanotechnology. A more generalized description of nanotechnology was subsequently established by the National Nanotechnology Initiative, which defines nanotechnology as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. What is Nanotechnology? What applications can it be used for?
Nanotechnology (sometimes shortened to "nanotech") is the manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. The earliest, widespread description of nanotechnology referred to the particular technological goal of precisely manipulating atoms and molecules for fabrication of macroscale products, also now referred to as molecular nanotechnology.

Science Documentary: Graphene, Nanomaterials, a Documentary on Nanotechnology
Science Documentary: Graphene, Nanomaterials, a Documentary on Nanotechnology
We use nanotechnology and nanomaterials every day or our lives. They are in sporting goods, microelectronics, automotive goods, biomedical devices, etc.
Graphene is a nanomaterial that comes from the oldest and cheapest material, called graphite. Graphene is a none atom thick layer of carbon. To put it in perspective, graphite is made of billions of layers of carbon, if you take one layer of that graphite, you have graphene. Graphene is very flexible, light and transparent; and it is 300 times stronger than steel, which makes graphene the strongest material known to man. The biggest problem with graphene, is that it is difficult to make.
Graphene was first discovered by taking scotch tape and a pencil with graphite, then scribbling on the piece of scotch tape, then by continuously separating the scotch tape over and over, you get a thinner piece of graphite. until eventually you reach about an atom thickness and you then have graphene. But this process, would be very difficult to produce graphene commercially. By using "magic" solvents, we can produce billions of graphene sheets in a half hour. Now scientists have improved that figure to one kilogram of graphene an hour. Graphene is not the only layered material in nature, so by exploring these different materials, we can produce totally different nanomaterials with completely different properties, because they would be made by different atoms.
There are several useful products that can be produced from nanomaterials, including printable and flexible electronics. Nanotechnology can also be used to make solar panels more affordable. Although, at the present time, solar panels are being produced, at a price that many people are happy to pay , for the output they produce. The problem is that when they are placed outside they become damaged from the sunlight. What happens is that the solar panels power output begins to slowly degrade up to 30% from its initial value, which is a very significant loss, and greatly affects the cost of the solar panel.
In microelectronics, a problem was discovered that was traced to ionized copper being affected by a light source. Since copper is positively charged, and positive and negative charges attract each other, if we put a material with a negative charge on the surface of the solar cell we can remove the effects caused by the harmful copper.
In the study of advanced nanotechnology, there are two engineering methods. The standard method and the exploratory method. Products engineered using the standard methodology must be able to be described and modeled, and must be able to be manufactured. In the standard model, ideas must be concrete, whereas in the exploratory method, parametric designs are more acceptable and are open to designs that are not yet understood.
We have seen winged flight and optical imaging, for example, and we have artificial systems that mimic them. The materials may be different but the systems are the same. In the molecular world, there are also several biological systems with there artificial counterpart. The biological systems use enzymes, whereas the artificial system uses digital information to create several new materials which can be used for making bulletproof vests with silk fiber.

("nanotech") is the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale. This definition reflects the fact that quantum mechanical effects are important at this quantum-realm scale, and so the definition shifted from a particular technological goal to a research category inclusive of all types of research and technologies that deal with the special properties of matter that occur below the given size threshold. It is therefore common to see the plural form "nanotechnologies" as well as "nanoscale technologies" to refer to the broad range of research and applications whose common trait is size. Because of the variety of potential applications (including industrial and military), governments have invested billions of dollars in nanotechnology research. Through its National Nanotechnology Initiative, the USA has invested 3.7 billion dollars. The European Union has invested[when?] 1.2 billion and Japan 750 million dollars.[3]

About this course
The transistor has been called the greatest invention of the 20th century – it enables the electronics systems that have shaped the world we live in. Today’s nanotransistors are a high volume, high impact success of the nanotechnology revolution. If you are interested in understanding how this scientifically interesting and technologically important nano-device operates, this course is for you!
This nanotechnology course provides a simple, conceptual framework for understanding the essential physics of nanoscale transistors. It assumes only a basic background in semiconductor physics and provides an opportunity to learn how some of the fascinating new discoveries about the flow of electrons at the nanoscale plays out in the context of a practical device.
The course is divided into four units:
Transistors fundamentals
Transistor electrostatics
Ballistic MOSFETs
Transmission theory of the MOSFET
The first two units provide an introduction for students with no background in transistors or a quick review for those familiar with transistors. The third unit treats the ballistic transistor in which electrons move without resistance (in the traditional sense). The last unit uses that Landauer Approach to electron transport, which was developed to understand some striking experiments in nanophysics, to develop an understanding of how electrons flow in modern nanotransistors. This short course describes a way of understanding MOSFETs that is much more suitable than traditional approaches when the channel lengths are of nanoscale dimensions. Surprisingly, the final result looks much like the traditional, textbook, MOSFET model, but the parameters in the equations have simple, clear interpretations at the nanoscale.
My objective for this course is to provide students with an understanding of the essential physics of nanoscale transistors as well as some of the practical technological considerations and fundamental limits. The goal is to do this in a way that is broadly accessible to students with only a very basic knowledge of semiconductor physics and electronic circuits. The course is designed for anyone seeking a sound, physical, but simple understanding of how nanoscale transistors operate. The course should be useful for advanced undergraduates, beginning graduate students, as well as researchers and practicing engineers and scientists.
This course is the latest in a series offered by the nanoHUB-U project which is jointly funded by Purdue and NSF with the goal of transcending disciplines through short courses accessible to students in any branch of science or engineering. These courses focus on cutting-edge topics distilled into short lectures with quizzes and practice exams

As technology progresses into the future, it can bear several very different scenarios. The first part of this video talks about three possible outcomes. The first of these scenarios involves a positive outlook on aging.
Our perspective on aging has changed over time. As technology advances, we will inevitably see people living much longer and healthier.
The second prediction for the future, involves a much less optimistic scenario. As much as there are scientists who are on the side of our first future scenario, there are many scientists who beli

In the twenty years since this seminal work was published, its premises and analyses have been confirmed and we are starting to apply precise molecular assembly to a wide variety of early applications from blood cell sized devices that can target cancer cells to a new generation of efficient solar panels. We can now see clearly the roadmap over the next couple of decades to the full realization of Drexler’s concept of the inexpensive assembly of macroobjects constructed at the nanoscale controlled by massively parallel information processes, the fulfillment of which will enable us to solve problems — energy, environmental degradation, poverty, and disease to name a few — that have plagued humankind for eons.”
— Ray Kurzweil
Eric Drexler (born April 25, 1955) is an American engineer best known for popularizing the potential of molecular nanotechnology (MNT), from the 1970s and 1980s. His 1991 doctoral thesis at Massachusetts Institute of Technology was revised and published as the book Nanosystems: Molecular Machinery Manufacturing and Computation (1992), which received the Association of American Publishers award for Best Computer Science Book of 1992.
“Some seminal works stand out like beacons in the history of science. Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica and Watson and Crick’s A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid come quickly to mind. In recent decades we can add Eric Drexler’s Engines of Creation, which established the revolutionary new field of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology, Creation and God. | Prof Russell Cowburn | TEDxStHelier
Russell Cowburn is Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Cambridge where he leads a large research team studying the physics and applications of nanotechnology. He is also a Christian. In this talk he describes what nanotechnology is, how it might be used to help solve global problems such as climate change and how we might begin to answer questions such as ‘what does God think about nanotechnology?
A new industrial revolution is underway in which nanotechnology is being deployed in real products and offering possible solutions to climate change, water scarcity and growing healthcare needs as well as providing further answers to questions of origins of life. Is nanotechnology therefore a force for good, bringing relief to people in need and shedding further light on what it means to be human? Should faith communities embrace it positively? Or is it a threat, offering rival explanations for the origins of life and risking enormous environmental damage should it ever escape from our control? Professor Cowburn, who is both a nanotechnologist and a Christian, will give an overview of nanotechnology and discuss the ethics and theology of this new technology
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Science Documentary: Nanotechnology,Quantum Computers, Cyborg Anthropology a future tech documentaryAll things we see are made up of atoms. The study of, and the ability to control, those atoms and molecules is through the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The scale of things on the nano scale are smaller than the width of a human hair.Nanotechnology has been used in various fields such as computer science and engineering, physics, chemistry and biology.Flexible electronics and wearable electronics are among the many growing fields that owe their existence to nanotechnology. Graphene is a nano material that is a conductive sheet of very thin, but very strong carbon. It is transparent, but is also very lightweight. Graphene is one of the most promising nano materials available to scientists today. The second portion of this video covers Quantum Computing. A quantum computer is an extremely fast computer. The processing power of a quantum computer is far greater than that of classical computers. Computers read information that are coded in bits, which are represented by 0's and 1's. A classical computer can process only one bit at a time, either a 0 or a 1. A Quantum computer, has quantum bits, or qbits, and a qbit can be a 0 and 1 at the same time. The next portion of the video covers cyborg anthropology and the evaporation of the interface. If you use a cell phone or manipulate a computer or tablet, you would be considered a low tech cyborg. A cyborg is an organism that has had certain outside components added to it in order for that organism to be able to fit in to its environment. The next step in the evolution of humans as cyborgs would be the evaporation of the interface. Soon it will be possible to do away with our need to interface with technology, because the technology will be able to sense our needs and react accordingly, without the need to push a button, or manipulate the device in any way. Similarly to the way that primitive tools enhanced humans ability to hunt, and an automobile enhanced our ability to move and travel faster without wasting our energy, the microprocessor is enhancing human cognitive capacity.Science Documentary: Cognitive Sciencehttp://youtu.be/0T_nOzpBYxUScience Documentary: Planet Formationhttp://youtu.be/yQexV341t-EScience Documentary: Expansion of the Universehttp://youtu.be/nxsOVYmwSOkScience Documentary: Star Formationhttp://youtu.be/VJ9fmAGShvsScience Documentary: Cosmic Microwave Backgroundhttp://youtu.be/fSPQbrxD75wScience Documentary: Electromagnetic Spectrumhttp://youtu.be/41Q6FeO-_8IGoogle+https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/1023842... Science Documentary:Future Scenarios, Nanotechnology, Carbon Nanotubes, Nanomagnetism
As much as there are scientists who are on the side of our first future scenario, there are many scientists who believe that the future is much more grim due to our technological advances. So much so that they predict the extinction of life as we know it on the planet.
The third is referred to as the prevail scenario. The idea of this prediction is that unlike the extremes of the other two predictions, in the prevail scenario, humans will be able to observe changes and adapt or adjust before those changes become unable to be reversed.
For some time now, scientists have used cochlear implants for totally deaf patients. A cochlear implant takes a sound and converts it into a digital signal and then sends it to the brain.
In 2004, the FDA approved similar technology for ocular implants to treat and cure blindness in the future.
Much in the way that we see our music players going from a big bulky boom box to a tiny mp3 player, we will see a similar path for other technology. There is military technology that allows a soldier to use a universal translator to communicate in other languages. At the present time it is large and expensive, but in the future we could see this technology shrink down to a chip for implanting directly into your brain. So you could buy an implant that could make you fluent in the language of your choice.
Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter at the atomic level in order to create anything you desire. Nanotechnology will change the future of energy. There is now available, plastic sheets with printed nanocircuits that use solar energy and convert it to electricity. These big plastic sheets will soon be very affordable and you can place these sheets anywhere you like. You can make anything you like that requires electricity to utilize solar power.
Nanobots are another promise of nanotechnology. Nanobots are smaller that a human blood cell. It is possible to place millions of these nanobots in your blood stream to monitor for diseased cells well in advance of experiencing any symptoms. Nanobots could also be sent into the body to destroy cancer cells, or fat cells, etc.
The merging of nanotechnology and biotechnology.
Since we humans have a 0.1 difference in DNA sequence, we all look and behave very different, and are susceptible to different diseases. Corneal dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes blindness. If your mother or father has this type of genetic mutation, you will not become blind unless you had lasik surgery, then you would be blind in two or three years. So by diagnosing very early on to determine the presence of such a genetic mutation, we can prevent these people from receiving lasik surgery.
This diagnostic technique can be used to detect an exact pathogenic microorganism so you can prescribe the right antibiotics without encountering any problems with resistance to antibiotics, by making a nano chip , to identify the exact microorganism.
Nanotechnology can be used to test the presence of toxic chemicals on your fruits and vegetables. You can make an inexpensive chip with an immobilized enzyme that can detect such toxic chemicals.
Aside from diagnostic uses of the merging of nanotechnology with biotechnology; there are also production capabilities. You can make quantum dots, magnets and many other things that you would other wise not be able to make without synthesizing microorganisms. There is the potential to produce items using spider silk, which is the strongest natural fiber in the world. And with such a useful and strong fiber, you can make a better bullet proof vest, types of rope, and other useful materials.
Carbon nanotubes are small, very light but highly conductive and have unlimited applications from batteries to touchscreens. But not all carbon nanotubes are the same, there are right nanotubes and wrong nanotubes and we need to know the difference.
Silver nanoparticles are released from silverware but whether or not silver nanoparticles are good or bad for you is still up for debate.
Nanomagetism is another interesting field of study within nanotechnology, and has applications in computer science, art and electronics.

[BBC Documentary 2015] Nanotechnology: Part 2 - New update documentary HD
Science Documentary: Graphene , a documentary on nanotechnology and nanomaterials
Graphene is a nanomaterial that is made out of pure carbon. Nanotechnology has been used in various fields such as computer science and engineering, physics, chemistry and biology.
These single layer sheets of graphite are as thick as just one atom, which means the scale of things on the nano scale are smaller than the width of a human hair, but are much stronger than steel yet much lighter in weight. Graphene is an excellent conductor of electricity, In the field of flexible electronics and wearable electronics the potential uses for graphene are immeasurable. Scientist have also experimented with the use of graphene in the desalination of salt water.
It is possible for anyone to make there own graphene right in there own home with the use of basic household materials. The scotch tape method incorporates the use of scotch tape and a pencil. By simply shading over the scotch tape with the pencil, and then continuing to pull away the sticky sides of the tape until the graphite is so thin that the graphite is eventually the size of a single atom, you have made a two dimensional graphene sheet.
Although, Scientists have come a long way in the research and development of graphene, The use of graphene in commercial applications may be several years away.
