Kurdistan ((listen) (help·info) "Land of the Kurds"; also formerly spelled Curdistan; ancient name: Corduene) is a roughly defined geo-cultural region wherein the Kurds form a prominent majority population, and Kurdish culture, language, and national identity have historically been based.
Contemporary use of Kurdistan refers to parts of eastern Turkey (Turkish Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan), northwestern Iran (Iranian Kurdistan) and northern Syria inhabited mainly by Kurds. Kurdistan roughly encompasses the northwestern Zagros and the eastern Taurus mountain ranges, and covers small portions of Armenia.
Iraqi Kurdistan first gained autonomous status in 1970 agreement with the Iraqi government and its status was re-confirmed as an autonomous entity within the federal Iraqi republic in 2005. There is also a province by the name Kurdistan in Iran, although it does not enjoy self-rule.
Some Kurdish nationalist organizations seek to create an independent nation state of Kurdistan, consisting of some or all of the areas with Kurdish majority, while others campaign for greater Kurdish autonomy within the existing national boundaries.

The Iraqi Kurds have been fighting for independence for a long time and are part of a very modern struggle in the Middle East.
"There are close to 30 million Kurds spread across northern Syria, northern Iraq, southern Turkey, and western Iran. They are the largest ethnic group without a homeland in the world. In the 1990s, the Kurds in northern Iraq, with the aid of the Coalition no-fly zone, began to develop their own autonomy, in what is now known as Iraqi Kurdistan. The Kurdistan Regional Government is functionally now its own country, although it is still officially recognized as part of Iraq." (sofrep.com)

Daily life in Iraq's Kurdish city of Erbil
Daily life in Iraq's Kurdish city of Erbil
Daily life in Iraq's Kurdish city of Erbil
In Iraq, some of the heaviest fighting between ISIL fighters and Kurdish Peshmerga forces is taking place outside Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region. But people in the city itself enjoy a high degree of comfort and security, thanks to its own Peshmerga army. Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from Erbil.
I fly into Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq. But this is nothing like Baghdad; it's peaceful and full of culture. I wander around a bazaar, see a bit of the citadel, and then do a rip around the city in a taxi.

Getting There: Iraqi Kurdistan has two international airports, Erbil and Sulaimany. Currently there are direct international flights from Kurdistan to Dubai, Amman, Beirut and Frankfort.
There is the option to reach to Kurdistan by flying to Turkey: - Purchase a ticket to Diyarbakir (the nearest large city to the Turkish / Iraqi Kurdistan border). Once you have crossed the Turkish border into Iraqi Kurdistan (Ibrahim Khalil/Habur), you will be greeted by the Kurdish customs officials who will issue you a visa and further information on your destination.
Getting Around Iraqi Kurdistan: Taxi, Bus, and Private Car Hire. If you are mainly interested in staying in a city, taxi is reliable and good value for money. An average charge within a city drive is 2 dollers, as for the Bus it is definitely cheaper. To hire a car with or without driver could be the option for you. You can have your own chauffeur at your disposal throughout your stay. This will offer you the choice to travel short or long distances. Erbil International Airport (IATA: EBL, ICAO: ORER), is the main airport of Erbil city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Erbil International Airport is centrally located on the Silk Road of the Airways. Following the liberation of Iraq in 2003, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to transform Erbil's former military base into a modern civil aviation airport to serve as a major gateway to the world. Erbil International Airport (EIA) officially opened on July 7, 2005, and it welcomed its first IATA carrier on 11th December 2006. The KRG has enacted favorable rules to attract foreign investors and to help citizens of the Kurdistan Region in exile return home. Domestic traffic, as well as regional traffic throughout the expansive Middle East, is growing. Kurdistan's great natural resources of oil, natural gas and other minerals are creating a flourishing and rapidly growing business environment. Kurdistan is previously in exile are returning, bringing with them connections to other lands. There is an ever stronger need for efficient air transport, for passengers as well as cargo. The Erbil area has a stable water supply, and is surrounded by scenic and accessible wilderness lands, with greenery, clean streams, waterfalls and caves. This stands in stark contrast to other Middle Eastern destinations, and visitors will fuel an important tourism industry in Kurdistan. These are some of the reasons that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and EIA have constructed and equipped an airport for the future, with capacity for three million passengers, and one of the world's longest runways, designed to accommodate the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft of that class. The airport is the culmination of the vision and strategy put in place in 2003.

With a population of 5.2 million and increasing, the three governorates of Erbil, Slemani, and Duhok cover approximately 40.000 square kilometers - larger than the Netherlands and four times the area of Lebanon. This includes the governorates administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government but does not include the disputed areas of Kurdistan outside of KRG administration, such as Kirkuk.
• The Region is geographically diverse, from hot and dry plains to cooler mountainous areas with natural springs and snowfall in the winter.
• Foreign visitors are warmly welcomed. Among the growing number of visitors are international media and business people as well as those returning from the Kurdish diaspora.
• The capital and the seat of the Kurdistan Regional Government is Erbil, a city known in Kurdish as Hawler. The Citadel in Erbil is considered the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement. The next largest cities are Slemani and Duhok. Please note that Slemani is the KRG’s official English spelling, but it can also be found with other spellings such as Sulaimani, Suleimani, Sulaimaniyah, and Suleimaniah.
• The Kurdistan Regional Government exercises executive power according to the Kurdistan Region’s laws as enacted by the democratically elected Kurdistan Parliament. Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani leads the current government.
• Iraq’s Constitution recognizes the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Kurdistan Parliament as the region’s formal institutions and the Peshmerga forces as the Region’s legitimate security guard.
• The current coalition government consists of several political parties that reflect the diversity of the Region’s population, which includes Chaldeans, Assyrians, Syriacs, Turkmen, Yazidis, Arabs and Kurds living together in harmony.
• More than 65% of destroyed villages have been rebuilt since being razed during the Anfal campaign perpetrated by Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1980s.
• The Kurdish language is of Indo-European origin and is among the family of Iranian languages, such as Persian and Pashto, and is distinct from Arabic. The two main dialects are Sorani and Kurmanji.
• The Kurdistan Region has eleven public universities and several licensed private universities. Some of them use English as the main language of teaching and examination, most notably the University of Kurdistan Hawler (UKH) and the American University of Iraq – Sulaimani (AUIS).
• A new, liberal foreign investment law was ratified in June 2006, providing incentives for foreign investors such as the possibility of owning land, up to ten-year tax holidays, and easy repatriation of profits.
• To rapidly benefit from its oil and gas resources, the KRG has signed dozens of production sharing contracts with companies from several countries.
• The Kurdistan Region has international airports in Erbil and Slemani, with direct flights to and from Europe and the Middle East. A new international airport is under construction in Duhok.

Upon his arrival in Tehran, Barzani met with Admiral Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
Barzani's visit comes after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani pledged on Saturday to provide Iraq's central government with assistance against militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
ISIL insurgents took control of Mosul and former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit in a lightening offensive last week.
Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes since the insurgencies broke out.

The Republic of Mahabad (Kurdish: Komarî Mehabad), officially known as Republic of Kurdistan and established in Eastern Kurdistan ( Persian occupied Kurdistan ), was a short-lived, Kurdish state of the 20th century after the Republic of Ararat in Turkey. The capital was the city of Mahabad in northwestern of present Iran.
In August 1941, a general uprising wrested control of the Kurdish region from the central Iranian government. In the town of Mahabad, inhabited mostly by Kurds, a committee of middle-class people supported by tribal chiefs, took over the local administration. A political party called the Society for the Revival of Kurdistan (Komeley Jiyanewey Kurdistan or JK) was formed. Qazi Muhammad, head of a family of religious jurists, was elected as chairman of the party. Although the republic was not formally declared until December 1945, the committee headed by Qazi, administered the area with commendable efficiency and success for over five years until the fall of the republic.
Soviet and British forces occupied Iran in late August 1941, with the Soviets controlling the north. The Soviets were mainly ambivalent towards the Kurdish administration. They did not maintain a garrison near Mahabad and also did not have any civil agent of sufficient standing to exercise any great influence. They encouraged Qazi's administration by practical benevolent operations such as providing motor transport, keeping out the Iranian army, and buying the whole of the tobacco crop. They opposed the declaration of a separate independent Kurdish republic.
In September 1945, Qazi Muhammad and other Kurdish leaders visited Tabriz to see a Soviet consul on the backing of a new republic, and were then redirected to Baku, Azerbaijan SSR. There, they learned that the Azerbaijan Democrat Party was planning to take control of Iranian Azerbaijan. On December 10, the Azerbaijan Democrat Party took control of East Azerbaijan province from Iranian government forces. Qazi Muhammad decided to do the same, and on December 15, the Kurdish People's Government was founded in Mahabad. On January 22, 1946, Qazi Muhammad announced the formation of the Republic of Mahabad.
On June 1946, Iran reasserted its control over Iranian Azerbaijan. This move isolated the Republic of Mahabad, eventually leading to its destruction. They closed down the Kurdish printing press, banned the teaching of Kurdish language, and burned all Kurdish books that they could find. Finally, on March 31, 1947, Qazi Muhammad was hanged in Mahabad on counts of treason
In October 1958, Mustafa Barzani returned to Northern Iraq, beginning a series of struggles to fight for an independent Kurdish state under the KDP party, carrying the same flag that was used in Mahabad.
Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt, Jr., grandson of the former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, wrote in "The Kurdish Republic of Mahabad" that a main problem of the People's Republic of Mahabad was that the Kurds needed the assistance of the USSR; only with the Red Army did they have a chance. But this close relationship to Stalin and the USSR caused most of the Western powers to side with Iran. Qazi Muhammad, though not denying the fact that they were funded and supplied by the Soviets, denied that the KDP was a Communist party, stating this was a lie fabricated by the Iranian military authorities, and adding that his ideals were very different from the Soviets.

Saddam Hussein has ordered his troops into Kurdistan to crush Iranian-backed
separatists in the mountainous enclave protected by US-led forces.
U-S warplanes have already stepped up flight activity in the Persian Gulf.
But the Pentagon is considering other precautionary moves in response to the Iraqi troop movements in northern Iraq.
There is concern Saddam Hussein plans to take advantage of recent fighting between Kurdish separatist factions and try again to occupy their homeland in northern Iraq.
APTV has file of the Kurdistan village gassed by President Saddam in 1988 and military parades in Baghdad.
The scars of Iraq's previous attacks on Kurds in the north of the country remain.
Almost 200-thousand Kurdish men were rounded up by Iraqi troops in 1988 as part of Saddam Hussein's campaign to smash Iraqi Kurdish separatists.
And it was here in this town of Halabja that Saddam's troops launched a devastating position gas attack on the Kurds in 1988.
While a memorial was built to the victims, the town remains a virtual ghost town.
Now there is concern that history could repeat itself.
The Pentagon has said Iraq has moved forces north toward the region occupied by Kurdish separatist factions that have been fighting each other.
According to the official Iraqi news agency, the move followed an appeal by one of two Kurdish factions - the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - vying for supremacy in the safe haven.
The faction under attack from the Iraqi forces - the Iran-backed Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - said a huge tank-led offensive had been launched on Irbil.
It added guerrillas were resisting, but the advancing Iraqi troops had reached the outskirts of the city.
Although Baghdad's intentions were unclear, Washington is reportedly considering a number of precautionary steps, including moving U-S Air Force fighters into Jordan or somewhere else nearby.
And Robert Deutsch, the State Department's specialist on Iraqi Kurds, is sounding out faction leaders to see whether they are willing to negotiate an end to their in-fighting.
Sporadic battles have broken out since the 17th of August, that interrupted a two year- old truce negotiated by the United States.
U-S Air Force planes based at bases in southern Turkey have been used since the Gulf War to enforce a no-fly zone over northern Iraq to protect the Kurds from Saddam's forces.
Iraq's intervention could ignite a new confrontation between Baghdad and the allied forces that have policed the region since the end of the Gulf War in 1991.
It also heightens tension between Iraq and Iran, who fought a war from 1980 to 1988.

Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) militants clashed with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Iraqi-Iranian border town of Kelashin on May 24, as the KDPI attempted to set a PKK foothold as their base.
Two KDPI militants were reportedly killed in the exchange of fire between the KDPI and PKK militants, after the KDPI, the Iranian offshoot of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of Masoud Barzani in northern Iraq, attempted to gain power in an area called Kelashin.
The dispute was believed to have started when a KDPI force was deployed to the border on May 10 with the intention of establishing a base in the area, Rudaw reported on May 24.
“Early this morning, the PKK attacked our Peshmerga and unfortunately what we were afraid of, just happened,” said Mohammad Saleh Qadri, the KDPI’s spokesperson.
The PKK has yet to comment on the matter.
The clash occurred in the mountainous border area, including the villages of Kelashin, Khenela, and Saqar, which are located near the border of Iran and Iraq.
Kelashin, where yesterday’s clashes took place, is a mountainous area in Iraq’s Kurdistan region that borders Iran to the east and Turkey to the west.
Kurdish militants have often used the strategic region as a midpoint for their guerrilla warfare due to its location, where air strikes are difficult.
With more than 5,000 militants spread across the area, the PKK is in virtual control of the no-man’s land located between Iran, Iraq and Turkey.

Breaking news Video:Kurds burn hotel in Iran, after Iranian intelligence officer tried to rape Kurdish woman leading to suicide
Kurds in Mahabad angered following allegation that 23-year-old woman jumped to her death due to sexual assault
Thousands of Kurds protested in front of a hotel and burned it in the Iranian city of Mahabad on Thursday, following the suicide of a female employee of the hotel who was jumped to her death in order to escape the rape attempts of an Iranian intelligence.
Mahabad is a predominantly Kurdish town in the north west corner of Iran.
She threw herself from the hotel’s balcony on the fourth floor, for fear of being captured by the Iranian officer.
security forces fired live bullets at the protesters and blocked off roads in the city leading to the protest site.
The Kurdish people in Iran have be subject to persecution and suppression by the authorities. This incident, although it seems individual, reflects the degree of brutality of security officers in Mahabad,” he said.
The Kurdish residents of Mahabad won’t stop protesting until making sure that the perpetrators are prosecuted
over the past few months, the Iranian authorities have executed several Kurdish activists

The Kurdish border city of Kobane in Northern Syria has been under siege by Islamic State fighters for more than three months. But Kurdish forces are managing to retain hold of most of the city. As well as keeping IS at bay – they see getting their story out to the rest of the world as a vital part of their mission. An Iranian Kurdish film-maker spent two weeks inside Kobane following the men and women risking their lives to publicise the ongoing battle.

History of the Kurdish people

Description
Iranian Kurdish Refugee Campaign UNHCR in Iraqi Kurdistan ERBIL
Kurds are a group related to Europeans in Linguistics and DNA. During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Treaty of Sevres outlined the creation of a Kurdish Nation in present day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. ( Due to Kemal Ataturk's military revival and formation of modern Turkey, Treaty of Lausanne supersedes Sevres and failed to mention Kurdistan. While today's Kurdish parties formed post-WWII, the Kurdish struggle for Independence began long before. Kurdistan Region has historically hosted wars between the Iranian Empires and Roman Empires, and the Ottoman Empire. During Ottoman Empire and Safavid Empire, The Kizilbash (occupying borders between Iran and Turkey) and of probably Kurdish origin, identified with the Safavid Empire and rebelled against the Ottomans.
This video covers the identity and origin of the Kurdish people, and their struggle for independence in Iraq dating back to Mustafa Barzani and the Pahlavi Dynasty. Including during the Iran-Iraq war, and Chemical Weapons attack on Halabja.
Ethnically:
"Discoveries from Kurdish Looms" by Robert D. Biggs, Mary & Leigh Block Gallery: "Ethnically the Kurds are an Iranian people
Iraq After the Muslim Conquest p.265: '...Kurdish presence in Iraq was merely an extension of their presence in Western Iran'
Iraq After the Muslim Conquest p.265: 'Iranian groups in foothills/mountains of Zagros were called Kurds at that time'
E. J. van Donzel: "Kurds are Iranian people who live mainly at the junction of Turkey, Iran Iraq, Syria & Transcaucasia".
John Limbert: "..The historic road from Baghdad to Hamadan and beyond divides the Kurds from their Iranian cousins, the Lurs"
Case of the Bronze Age by Carl C. Lamberg-Karlovsky:
Iranian people belong to the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) community which is ancestral to the Celtic, Italic (including Romance), Germanic, Baltic, Slavic, Indo-Iranian, Albanian, Armenian, Greek, and Tocharian languages.
There is an agreement that the PIE community split into 2 major groups. One headed west for Europe and became speakers of Indo-European (all the languages of modern Europe save for Basque, Hungarian, and Finnish) while others headed east for Eurasia to become Indo-Iranians.
The Indo-Iranians were a community that spoke a common language prior to their branching off into the Iranian and Indo-Aryan languages.
Iranian refers to various Iranian people such as Persian, Laki, Luri, Baluchi, and Dari speakers.
Indo-Aryan: Sanskrit, Hindi and its many related languages.

The Battle of Chaldiran of 1514 is an important turning point in Kurdish history, marking the alliance of Kurds with the Ottomans. The Sharafnameh of 1597 is the first account of Kurdish history. Kurdish history in the 20th century is marked by a rising sense of Kurdish nationhood focused on the goal of an independent Kurdistan as scheduled by the Treaty of Sèvres in 1920. Partial autonomy was reached by Kurdistan Uyezd (1923–1926) and by Iraqi Kurdistan (since 1991), while notably in Turkish Kurdistan, an armed conflict between the PKK and Turkish Armed Forces was ongoing from 1984 to 1999, and the region continues to be unstable with renewed violence flaring up in the 2000s.

Kurdistan is blossoming - but it depends on protection from the US and UK. The new found security is fragile, and the second Gulf War could undermine everything.
A deformed baby screams for its mother in the hospital in Halabja – a living legacy of the long term effects of Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction. Today, congenital abnormality rates are 4-5 times higher than post atomic populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 5000 Kurds were killed by chemical weapons in 1988, as Saddam bombed, burned and bulldozed in his attempts to exterminate the Kurds. Now they have rebuilt 80% of their villages, and Iraqi Kurdistan is undergoing a mini boom. Western style shopping malls are springing up, university students have 50 independent newspapers and internet access. ”It really is a tremendous change. We have suffered a lot. We are very happy,” comments one shopper. The Kurds see themselves as a model for a democratic Iraq. In 1992, they held elections, formed a parliament and have embraced the ballot box. ”To see what we have achieved in a situation where we had no culture of democracy and civil institutions is a great success story,” comments Salah Barham of the Kurdish regional government. But the society they have built is incredibly fragile. Saddam has 200.000 troops stationed only 30km away and security depends on the US and UK maintaining no fly zones. Gruesome pictures of 20 decapitated Kurdish fighters near the Iranian border reveals a new immediate threat ; Jund al-Islam – part of the Al Qaeda network. If President Bush is looking for evidence to link Saddam to Bin Laden, then he might find some here.

30 September 2014 – Justice for Iran’s Kurds was the title and overarching theme of a conference jointly organised by the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) and the International Network of Iranian Kurdistan Human Rights (INIKHR), which was held yesterday [29 September 2014] at Nieuwspoort in the Hague. In response to the notable absence of coverage on Iranian Kurdistan in Western media and political debates, this conference hoped to bring attention to the human rights abuses and systematic discrimination Iran’s Kurds suffer at the hands of the Tehran government, looking at it both from a historical and a more current political perspective.
Mr Keywan Faramarzi, from the International Network of Iranian Kurdistan Human Rights (INIKHR), opened the conference, and was followed by UNPO Program Manager Johanna Green, who underlined the importance of having an open discussion on the situation with both Kurdish political actors and international experts in order to raise large-scale awareness of the current difficulties faced by Iran’s Kurds and other minorities at the international level.

Upon arrival to the Diyarbakir airport, you will need to take a taxi to the border (Ibrahim Khalil / Habur). Once you have crossed the Turkish border into Iraqi Kurdistan (Ibrahim Khalil/Habur), you will be greeted by the Kurdish customs officials who will issue you a visa and further information on your destination.

Kurdistan's Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Iran on Monday to hold talks with Iranian officials over the latest developments in Iraq.

The text of Bahram Rahmani's speech! On June 4th, the European Parliament (EP) hosted a conference entitled “The Crisis in Middle East, Iran, and the Kurds”. The conference was organized by the Kurdish Friendship Group within the EP, endorsed by the Eastern Kurdistan Committee and Kurdistan National Congress (KNK). The conference convened at a time, where a war – no less than World War III- is being waged in Middle East, when there are ongoing bilateral nuclear consultations, and where Kurds and other minorities are under heavy suppression.

The Kurds are an ethnic Iranian group who have historically inhabited the mountainous areas to the south of Caucasus (Northern Zagros and Eastern Taurus mountain ranges), a geographical area collectively referred to as Kurdistan. Most Kurds speak an Indo-European language belonging to the Northwestern Iranian branch.
There are various hypotheses as to predecessor populations of the Kurds, such as the Carduchoi of Classical Antiquity. The earliest known Kurdish dynasties under Islamic rule (10th to 12th centuries) are the Hasanwayhids, the Marwanids, the Shaddadids, followed by the Ayyubid dynasty founded by Saladin.
